Their office's base charges are much higher than other local dentists, for even standard procedures such as cleaning. This means that you will have to pay more because the difference between what your dental insurance company says the base price ought to be and what they charge is greater. They are "perfectionist" dentists and are into preventative dentistry, which means they will try to treat things that don't need to be treated. In my case this was three unnecessary fillings. Two friends of mine had the same experience at Dr. Bishop's office (and both changed dentists, as I did). Dr. Bishop's office uses procedures that may not be covered by your insurance, and they will not make any mention of this fact, but just dive in and do it. In my case, they used a laser to "detect cavities that may be forming." It cost me $65 for them to wave a laser over my teeth for 90 seconds, and find three "problem areas" that they said I should treat now (see above: unnecessary fillings). If cost is no option, this is your dentist. If you don't appreciate non-disclosure of costs and would like to avoid spending time and money on unnecessary treatments, look elsewhere.

Beware of incompetent, unprofessional staff and billing errors…read more I went to this office for a cleaning in October 2025 and scheduled a crown for November. Per their policy, I paid a $500 deposit upfront and the remaining balance on the day of the procedure. A few days before Christmas, they began repeatedly calling, emailing, and texting me about a supposed $584 "past due" balance, asking if I had other insurance. Before I even had a chance to respond, they sent a bill. I was then told by their office to call MetLife and ask them to reprocess the claim--something that should never be the patient's responsibility. I did anyway. MetLife confirmed the issue: the dental office had checked the wrong box on the claim, making it appear I had other coverage, which triggered a reversal. I had to explain their own error back to them after being harassed about a balance that was never mine. At no point did the practice acknowledge the mistake or apologize. Instead, the practice manager said she was "frustrated" that I had contacted MetLife--despite their staff directing me to do exactly that--and even claimed MetLife was being dishonest. The incorrect balance still sits on my account with a prompt to pay. They claim they are not actively collecting, but the system will gladly take my money if I choose to pay it. That is unacceptable. Even worse, if this is not resolved, MetLife may deduct this amount from my 2026 benefits--meaning I could lose coverage for care I actually need. I am now overdue for a cleaning and additional dental work, and I no longer feel comfortable returning. The office is aware of this, yet their response has been dismissive at best and hostile at worst. For a practice that advertises itself as the "number one" dentist in Chapel Hill, this experience has been the opposite. Competence, accountability, and basic professionalism matter far more than marketing claims.

I built a rapport with Dr. Barton way back during her Rocky Mount tenure at Harrold & Associates but she seemed too busy at this practice.
