So, so sad to see this place go -- one of the few true fine‑dining establishments in North Park. Of course we had to come back one last time to soak in the magic before it closed. The service here has always been excellent. I love that you can walk into the indoor bar area for drinks, enjoy their amazing oyster rooftop happy hour, or settle in for a full indoor dinner. We arrived right at opening at 5 pm, and there was already a line outside. Once the doors opened, we were seated quickly. Our server was attentive, warm, and knowledgeable about the drinks, giving us plenty of time to look over the menu. We ordered a salad, the bone marrow (my forever favorite), the hanger steak and the risotto. Every single dish was incredible -- no notes. I've always loved how they explain each dish, the thoughtful presentation, and the balance of flavor and portion. Being able to see into the kitchen adds to the experience; the whole style of the place just works. We've had some really special moments here, and we'll truly miss it. Even the smell -- like palo santo or something softly aromatic -- added to the ambiance. The attention to detail and passion showed in everything: the cocktails, the food, the atmosphere, the design. Food: I got the oysters & the scallop I'm telling you it was to die for. I loved the seasoning, sauce, and topping they give you for it. It was very clean, fresh, and super appetizing! Easy reservations on Open Table for dinner, found street parking after circling a bit. Interior was hip with an open kitchen, bar top seating, booths and a rooftop with happy hour. Service was really great ambiance inside (5/5), they also provided a starter bite and a sweet treat before the check which were nice touches. The chef had surf and turf concepts which we enjoyed. Favorite dish was the hangar steak with beef tallow fries and mindful mushrooms. The pasta was good but a little too oily for me and some of the noodles were clumped together. We went on a Thursday night for a week night date night. Parking is hit or miss so definitely arrive 15min before your reservation time. We booked a regular seating (not rooftop) for 7pm and was seated at the chefs counter. It was a treat watching the chefs. They have many types of seating to fit many needs. We ordered a more small dishes than large ones and the sandia spritz and fuega fresca for drinks. Both were delicious! Fuega fresca is especially mezcal forward. Oysters: fresh, briny, delicious Tongue and clam: not necessarily a profile that I would have gravitate towards us, but it actually ended up tasting pretty good Tagliatelle: refreshing and light pasta esp with the calamari Our server was Tyler with help from Sahad (apologies for misspelling). Came here on a Friday night for happy hour and oysters. When we got there the wait was about 45 to an hour so we put our name on the list and went over to original 40 next door to kill some time. It was almost the end of happy hour and we still weren't texted so we went back over and they had a table outside for us just in time for happy hour. The server came over fast to put our one order in before happy hour was over. Wish we had more time to get other stuff but it was a Friday night so the wait was long! This is simply a gem of place in pretty rough neighborhood, wouldn't want to be here at night. Warm, lively and transformative the moment you walk in, reminds me of few places in NYC like Queens. The host greets you and even walks you all the way to rooftop bar and I felt bad for her. Everyone from the bartenders and servers were amazing and it's one of the best HH in the SD area. Made reservation here to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were warmly greeted and seated at a counter looking towards the kitchen. The chef's are artisans and we enjoyed watching them create. Our waiter Alex, was very knowledgeable and informative as to the items on the menu. He was great at checking in and making sure everything was good. Well, not sure where to start. You walk in and it looks like a hometown buffet. Kind of like a cafeteria. They were very busy, but they were able to get us a seat. The booth for two was extremely tiny. Take a while to get our cocktails, but they were delicious. I'll just get to the bottom line. For the two of us including tip it was about $250 between the two of us. We had three cocktails we shared two appetizers and a burger. We had oysters just the six, the tostada, and as I said the burger. The tostada was probably the favorite, but for the price I don't know if I would have it again you kinda have to gauge sometimes is this dish, the ambience and the service really worth the price. Came for their $12 dozen oysters on their happy hour menu, which is a great deal! HH is served on the rooftop, so on a hot sunny day, it can be a little brutal in the sun. The dish with beef tongue & clams was delish, very unique. Tuna crudo was quite subpar - would NOT order again. Their sourdough bread was pretty tasty, but again, pricey for bread. Made reservation for 7:30 on a Friday. Arrived and was seated right away. Ambiance is nice. I had a table in the back which had nice couch type seating and was quiet. Started off with wine and oysters. Oysters were delicious. Moved onto the fish crudo and tongue and clams. Both were amazing. Finished off the meal with their burger. I usually don't order a burger when going to higher end restaurant but I just had a craving and I'm glad I ordered it. It was probably one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had. First the good: The dishes were beautifully presented and most of the food excellent. The risotto was one of the best things I've ever eaten and the guinea fowl was super memorable. A few other dishes were quite good too, but those two stood out! The but: it felt like none of the little things went well for a restaurant of this caliber and this price. Service from wait staff was only okay and utensils were regularly forgotten between courses, table wasn't usually wiped down, and several other parties were ushered past us (we came in first and couldn't get the attention of the host to check in for our reservation) when we asked to be seated. Every time my drink was full I was asked about 3 times if I wanted another one, but every time it was empty, no one was around. The main problem was that we waited about 40 minutes between each course. Portions were smaller so everything was eaten within a few minutes and then we didn't get our next round for long enough that we started to forget the last course. The dinner was closing in on 4 hours by the time we were done and our bill was around $1000 for six of us. Normally these expectations would be too high, but for a restaurant charging pretty high prices and touting that they're aiming for a Michelin star, I just feel like these things were just too much of a miss. Lastly, we chose this spot for my birthday, and nothing was really done for my birthday. I don't need (or even want) any sort of fanfare, but our waitress came out and just said "we ran out of candles" when she dropped off the dessert and that was it. I liked a lot of the food and the ambiance was very cool, but I just don't think I have upwards of 3.5 hours and the amount of money I need to set aside to try again. Maybe for a party of 2 or the happy hour, but the prefix menu with a medium sized party just felt a little unprepared. read more

I have been to Deckmans a few times for happy hour and their Sunday Roast Dinners when they had them. Always satisfied and pleased by the food and service. I just celebrated my 40th birthday here and it was aaammmmaazzing! This is exactly the superb service and flavors of a Michelin star chef! The staff was so accommodating and attentive. Tyler was our server and we had a great time conversing with him learning about the origins of the Chef's vision and other restaurants. Chef Drew Deckman even came out a handful of times to deliver some dishes and explained it to us. I was so surprised to see that! The ambiance was classy yet fun. We had the backroom to ourselves. There were 13 adults and a 3 year old. They were so sweet to my 3 year old niece making her own delicious potatoes fries dish. I really hope they don't leave North Park. My friend discovered this gem on Instagram and we just had to go for happy hour on the rooftop bar. While it's walk-in only, the wait was only about 15 minutes. The restaurant itself has a few different areas including a small outdoor seating area, small indoor bar and dining area (the restaurant is long and there are bathrooms and another dining room at the back), and of course the rooftop. The decor gives off a fresh coastal vibe, very Californian. While the rooftop is rather small, they manage to fit in a bar, couch seating and tables. The best part is the $12 for a dozen oysters and other wine and cocktail specials. Perhaps this isn't the norm, but there was only 1 server for the entire rooftop. She did amazing considering how busy it was. We ended up ordering 3 of the dozen oysters which satisfied that craving. Additional items ordered included beef tartare, which had good flavor but was a little too well done, and the fish collar which was also good but a little on the salty side. The rooftop definitely clears out after happy hour and I can see why it is so popular. read more

Came here on a Sunday for their prefix menu. Didn't get to try the oysters which I want to for their happy hour. The aesthetics is nice and intimate. Felt the chairs where we were sitting was a bit narrow getting in and out, but it could've been where we were seated. Service was great as they knew and were mindful that we were a bit on a time crunch with having reservations we needed to get to. They served olives to the table which could've been without for those who aren't fans of olives. I thought the food overall on the prefix was good. I would say the steak could have been seasoned better even though there were dipping sauces that came with it. I had medium rare and my partner happens to get the steak more on the medium side, which we weren't asked how we wanted the steak. Finally had the chance to eat in the formal dining room of 31ThirtyOne by Deckman's. I have eaten at Deckman's in valle de Guadalupe so I was very excited to try this finally (had been in for happy hour on roof previously). The three of us did the chefs tasting menu. It was a tricky decision because everyone at the table HAD to do that, which presented a problem for me due to a couple food allergies. Ultimately we decided to do it and I would just have a larger portion of something that I wasn't restricted to eating. We started with an amuse bouche which was lovely. I will say, it took an extremely long time for our first course to come. First course was a spring salad and a big eye tuna that chef caught that day. Unfortunately the tuna came with an avocado mousse which wasn't listed in the description and I have an allergy for that. They totally rectified then situation and send out another without the mousse. They sent out a complimentary sourdough loaf because the other courses were also taking a long time. When the second course did arrive it was the scallops and an incredible pasta dish. The show stopper for me was the cod dish and hanger steak. And the dessert was delicious as well. My husband and I were excited when Deckman's announced they were open for lunch because we rarely make it out to dinner alone with 2 little kiddos. We went on a Friday and were so pleased to see the restaurant was bustling, almost every seat was taken. The ambiance was so lovely, relaxing cozy booths, nice music, classy decor. I'm surprised to read any negative reviews about service because our service was 10/10- very attentive and nice. My only complaint was things moved slow, but it's a small kitchen, not meant for a fast experience. They also didn't have a ton of N.A. drinks outside of soda -- I would have appreciated an iced tea or mocktail even. I ordered the ginger ale but it was too sweet so i just drank water. The food was excellent. I was worried the courses would be small but they were perfect -- we left very full! My husband got the 3 course while I got the burger. He ordered the soup to start which was devoured. The pork was great, the burger was great (just not sure I loved the seafood aioli). The fries were delicious, just some were pretty dense (felt like I was eating a straight potato). The food here was so good! The bartender made a delicious muddled extra dirty martini to my exact liking. The bar assistant was so sweet and kind as well as the food runner who gave beautiful descriptions of the entree and dessert that I ordered. The energy and lively spirit of the place definitely came from the manager Lucas who showed myself and other guests to the busy rooftop sundeck and checked on us and refilled waters at every trip up to bring more guests for happy hour. They were busy and the food was fast, tasty, Michelin-style, but still a value in terms of the food size. I had the Hanger steak with chimichuri and fries. The steak was cooked perfectly and was buttery with a very distinct BBQ flavor which paired well with the Dragonette Pinot Noir which is medium bodied and spicy. The steak fries were crispy and cooked to perfection and the mushrooms added some yummy umami. I finished with the cream cheese chocolate cake with strawberries which was all the right kinds of crumbly and gooey. I went here for happy hour for the first time. We ordered two dozen oysters and they never got sent out. The waiter came out and asked if we wanted another round of oysters and I let him know we never even got the first order and he apologized and said he would check on it and never came back. I ended up walking up to the counter after we weren't checked up on although they checked on the table next to us and asked for the check. This is such a fantastic and special place to have in San Diego. We came this year for our 8-year anniversary and we liked it so much we returned on my birthday a month later. It is reliably fantastic and who doesnt love a open kitchen format to watch the magic happen! On that note, I HIGHLY recommend sitting at the counter across from the kitchen to experience that. As a couple, it was really lovely and I was honored to even have Chef Drew photo bomb out selfie that night. Its unpretentious and everything we have tasted was unique and delicious, down to me wondering what was in the amazing salad dressing we had on our first visit! I'll break my review up into the two experiences, which were highly unique and such winners I want to recommend to everyone. SUNDAY SUPPER EXPERIENCE: Our first visit (anniversary dinner) we went on Sunday, Easter Sunday in fact! They do a "Sunday Supper" prix fixe meal thats selected for you like going to a fancy tasting menu and based on our experience, you can't go wrong. It's a great introduction to their multi-course offerings and a discounted price. Highly recommend! The meal for that day was: -Black Hat Bakery sourdough with butter (to die for, I could have eaten a second loaf) - Chilled cucumber soup with ridgeback shrimp and saffron leeks - this was so interesting and different. I havent had many chilled soups and it was a fun experience - Local lettuces, blood orange, coco beans, cheese, herbs flowers - this is the salad I wish I knew what was in the dressing as it was one of my fav thingf in the meal. I think it had mint in it Leg of Lame, dauphinoise potatoes, ratatouille - Felt like we hit the jackpot getting lamb as the entree! Delicious -Spring Berry Clafoutis with brown butter ice cream ...now, I was reading into things because I thought this meal was a biblical homage to it being Easter Sunday with the lamb (e.g. Lamb of God) and learning clafoutis in old french means "to nail, fix with nails," We asked and no, lol, Chef Drew was just coming up with a traditional Easter meal where lamb is usually served. I was putting on a detective hat and slightly embarrassed haha. Anyway it was all delicious and a great experience! Loved the mystery of what we would be eating. --- Meal 2: Birthday Meal They truly knows how to make every guest feel special and appreciated, but really goes above and beyond for special occasions. I requested to be seated in view of the kitchen and we had such a wonderful and intimate experience at the counter! Getting to observe the talented staff prepare food and even converse directly with the famous Drew Deckman was really a magical experience. From their signature cocktails to their dishes (hanger steak omg) and even the whipped up light dessert for a bday candle, everything was outstanding. Probably one of my best birthday celebrations to date. I've been hearing such great things about this spot in NP so decided to give it a try for happy hour! My friends and I got there right at 5pm and waited about 5 minutes. They have a cute bar right when you enter the restaurant and another one on the rooftop. There is seating outside/indoors. We went to the rooftop, which was very small. However, they have bar seating, high top tables, and a little couch in the corner that fits 3 to 4 people, but has limited table space. Parking was fairly easy to find during this time. Staff were all very nice and welcoming! They have the cutest uniforms too. The happy hour menu is very limited, but they do offer a full dinner menu as well. It's a pretty pricey place to dine. Food/drink review: Oysters: (5/5) You can't beat $12 oysters! I personally couldn't consume d/t allergies, but my friends devoured them and said they were very fresh and yummy! Let me start by saying I would have gladly given this place 4 or even 5 stars because the food was very good. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. At first, I wondered if maybe we were being overlooked because of the way we looked, but then another couple standing next to us asked how long we had been waiting. We told them it had already been an hour, and they said they had been waiting just as long. The gentleman even commented, "I wonder if it's because of the way we look." We went upstairs to the rooftop and noticed an empty corner table for three, which was exactly the size of our party. We asked if we could sit there, especially since some of the smaller two-top tables had reserved signs on them, but we were told no. Eventually, after all that waiting, they seated us... at the exact same table that had been empty the entire time. I mentioned that the table appeared to have been available all along, and the hostess responded, "Oh, I moved a reservation." I honestly found that hard to believe. My son is a chef in NYC who has earned a Michelin star, and one thing I've learned from him is that it's not just the food that earns recognition -- the service and overall experience matter just as much. Went to 31ThirtyOne on Valentine's Day for dinner with my significant other. We have the Chef's Counter tasting menu with 7+ courses. We had it with the wine pairing. This is a relatively small restaurant in North Park, and getting a table can be a bit of a challenge, but for good reason: This is a fantastic place.  We started with an apéritif of crackers, yellow tail, and crab--a wonderful start. As an amuse we had beets three ways. Then, we entered the seafood part of the dinner, with tuna, lobster, and uni. For the meats, we had squab and flatiron steak. We wrapped up with sorbet, chocolate, and petits fours. All the food was delicious and well presented, and the wine pairings from the central coast were perfect.  The service, sommelier, and chefs were great, making this a lovely experience. 1st of all, service is top notch. Britney is our server for our 1st time in and she killed it. Immediately 5 Ambiance of the place is another 5. Props to whoever designed the spot. Now to the food, Started off with and some puree with pesto. 4.7/5 Kenpachi Crudo was very solid. Honestly would've preferred it without the chips. Kind of take away from the overall flavor profile. But of the crunch is a must. I would've picked a lighter crunch. 4/5 Bone Marrow with charred salad. Overall richness was great. Bread was great. The salad had a strong bitter after taste. Idk if that was the choice or an unfortunate mistake. But if it was a choice. A quick mention of going lighter on the salad per bite would've been a good advice prior to our 1st bite. But nonetheless the dish was a favorite to my partner. 4/5 Pork Belly Risotto... perfection. 10/5 (would recommend every single time)*** Hanger Steak. Very solid but for the price I expected a bit more I guess. Maybe the steak could've been sliced uninformed and thinly would be my only nitpick. Sauce was on point, mushrooms on point and even though I thought the fries were originally too big of a cut. Later changed my mind and it made sense for the bite they offered. 4.2/5 Chocolate Mousse with Bayleaf Toffe. Very great texture and rich in flavor. We tried to get reservations here over a month ago but they were booked out so we decided to check out their rooftop instead. We started with a dozen of the Baja Farms Oysters. They were plump but were very seawater-y salty. I ordered the Ella Fitzgerald with Strawberry, mezcal, lime and agave. I enjoyed the smokiness and sweetness that this drink delivered. We then proceeded to order the Taj Farms lamb terrine, Bigeye, Mussels, and House cured anchovies. I really liked the Bigeye tuna and the mussels. The tuna was fresh and the mussels were not chewy. I also liked the house cured anchovies but it was on the saltier side. The Taj Farms lamb was too salty for us. We noticed that the dishes tend to be on the saltier side. We ended up ordering a sourdough bread charcuterie which was not on the menu but offered by our bartender/server. The sourdough bread was freshly made and was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was sooooo good. My friend liked the lamb and we were hoping that they would go easy on the salt the second time around but it was the same. While you need reservations, we noticed that there were plenty of open tables and seatings available on our way out. The downstairs area is where the prix fixe 4 course magic happens. I've wanted to try the prix fixe menu but after trying all but one of their appetizers, now a bit hesitant that the dishes may be a bit too salty. read more

This was a surprising and satisfying experience. We had reservations on Friday night at 6:30. We were placed at the bar near the chef so we were able to watch the staff cook. Not only were the meals impressive but the ability for this staff, especially our waitress Julie, to adjust to our needs and create unique items on the menu was astonishing. My best friend does not drink alcohol and they were able to make a non-alcoholic spritzer with blood orange, which was divine. We had the scallops, steak, and seabass, which were complex flavors that sing beautifully on our pallets. The service and staff were friendly and thoughtful. The chef came over at the end of our meal to ask how we enjoyed it. My friend and I are not able to have dairy and they created an absolutely divine off the menu dessert for us. Food was delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and so flavorful. Service was amazing and warm. I specifically loved the smoked fish dip and the pasta with morro bay calamari. My friend ordered the catch of the day (trout) and said it was probably the best trout she's had. I loved the seafood focused menu while they also had some top tier steak/fowl incorporated. I recently celebrated my anniversary here and while the evening was special, the overall dining experience left me with mixed feelings. The ambiance was lovely, with an inviting, rustic charm that made for a romantic setting, but when it came to the food, there were both highs and lows. We started with a dozen oysters. While fresh, they didn't blow us away, they were just okay and had pieces of broken shells left behind. We also tried the cured mackerel dish, but unfortunately, it was a miss for me. The fishiness was overpowering, and I couldn't fully appreciate the dish. That said, the grilled sea bass collar was a standout. It was cooked perfectly, tender with a smoky char that made every bite worth savoring. Along with the sea bass, we had the tuna, steak, and mussels as part of our prix fixe menu. The tuna was fresh and flavorful, the steak was cooked exactly to our liking, and the mussels had a rich, savory broth that paired well with the seafood. These dishes were absolutely delightful and truly the highlight of the meal. To cap off the experience, the restaurant added candles to our desserts to celebrate our anniversary, which was a thoughtful touch to the evening. However, I felt the prix fixe menu was a bit overpriced for the amount of food we received. While some dishes were good, some were a miss. The portion sizes didn't feel quite enough to justify the cost. My boyfriend was still hungry afterwards so had to go for a round 2 somewhere else. read more
