This was one of those...what do we eat? We have passed by this place many a time and for some reason I thought the menu was more along the lines of dinner style shared dishes. But the menu is very much HK cafe with a focus on the soup noodles. Other than the location in Richmond Hill, there is also a location in Scarborough, downtown Bay Street and one in North York? The Richmond Hill location is at Times Square and is pretty big. They are know for their soup noodles but we ordered from the regular menu. What was ordered: Pork Chop on rice with egg, onions and mushrooms Chicken Curry Dishes come with your choice of hot drink or cold with an extra charge. This is very no frills style, you don't get water or tea when you are seated, only the drink that comes with your meal. The chicken curry is a bowl of curry sauce with a fried chicken fillet on the side and a scoop of mixed veggies (corn, peas and carrots). Pork cutlet is a deep fried thin pork cutlet with onions, mushrooms on a bowl of rice and soy sauce served on the side. Flavours were very much meh but prices were on the higher side for what you get compared to other similar style establishments. Definitely better options out there. read more

I've been coming to Deer Garden in Richmond Hill for over 10 years and it used to be one of my go-to spots. I still remember when a bowl of noodles was around $8.25, so it's been disappointing to see it climb to about $18.50 now. My last two visits weren't quite the same as before. The 方魚肉碎 soup base used to have a stronger fish flavour, but recently it tastes milder. The beef brisket also wasn't as good as I remember and was a bit tougher. I usually order the tomato soup base. The bowl arrived with soup, but after just a few minutes of eating the vermicelli had already soaked up quite a bit and the bowl was down to about three quarters left. When I asked about topping it up, I was told extra soup would cost extra. The staff also suggested I order a different type of noodle next time because vermicelli absorbs the soup. I was honestly surprised they wouldn't just add a small scoop of soup to make a long-time customer happy. They also now charge for a takeout hot drink cup, even though cold drinks have always been served in takeout cups already. It just feels like more and more small charges are being added. I still have a lot of nostalgia for this place after coming for so many years, but my recent visits were a bit disappointing compared to how it used to be. read more

Let me pre-face this review by saying that I have eaten here for quite a while which reveals my age. Recently as per usual I came here with my other half to grab lunch and noticed that they increased their prices for the soup. As of today Dec 2025 the price is $18.50 and the last price was $16.75. This translates into a 10.44% increase! This got me thinking about their price history and taking a look at some fellow yelpers over the years I see the price has steadily increased as follows 2014: $8.25 2017: $9.75 2018: 11.50 2019: 11.99 2022: $15.75 2024: $16.75 2025: $18.50 Deer garden has been a neighborhood staple though offering a consistent meal and service over the years. I totally understand price increases over time, but wow-wee it was a big jump this time. I would still come here moving forward but unfortunately I would have to question my life choices with these price changes over the years. Went here after karaoke for dinner with my friends. This is my first time here! Venue: plenty of seats here including a few spots for larger tables. Some booths as well by the wall. Service: easy to find staff, fast service. Food: first of all, the portion is HUGE ! I definitely should have checked the other tables while being seated to see how big it is because ordering additional appetizers was not needed! They provided the right amount of noodles, toppings, vegetables as well. You can opt to have no cabbage, no green onion & parsley (actually cilantro). Absolutely zero complaints about the food. It was delicious and very customizable. There are so many options to choose from and rarely does the meal also come with the drink. The portions are also big and very filling. The only downside was the service. It took forever for the waitress to come get our order and it was hard to flag them down if you didn't sit near the cashier. Also we only had USD in our hands (because we were going to pay in credit card) and they had us pay 1:1 even though USD is worth more, so we overpaid. However we just considered it as giving tip, but the way they talked and the overall experience wasn't good. There was no sign that they did not accept credit card on the doors/ windows outside. All they had was a tiny piece of paper taped to the window of the cashier saying cash or debit only. read more

Came here for an early dinner on a Sunday. It wasn't busy at all and the atmosphere was nice. It's the perfect place to have a hearty and warm meal on a cold night! You really get the best bang for your buck here as they have large portion sizes. Your order is fully customizable, from the broth to the toppings. I got the original fish broth with wide rice noodles, fish tofu, and fish fillet for the toppings. I didn't think there would be much flavour to my broth due to the pale colour. However I wasn't pleasantly surprised! It had a nice depth of flavour without an overpowering fish taste. The fish tofu was also very soft and paired nicely with the slices of fresh fish. They gave me a ton of noodles which I appreciated, but I ended up running out of broth. This left me with a bunch of soggy noodles at the bottom. For the side I had the honey sausage. It had that perfect balance between sweet and salty. Overall, it's a great place to get a good bowl of soup. Definitely would love to come back and try their other broths! read more

Inside is big with small/medium size tables available. There's also bar seating for quick come-and-goers. Decor is pretty basic with the modern furniture. Staff didn't have much smile/friendliness, but nice and orders came relatively quick. Food I like how you have a choice to order their standard menu items or order their soup noodle with your own customization. I chose their signature Deer Garden broth with thick noodles, 2 items (beef and fish cake) and a hot milk tea. You can obviously add more items if you wish for extra cost - but the way it is set up seems decent for me in terms of portion and quantity. It was a big bowl - and I was super full from eating it. The broth was nice, fresh - but not bland enough that it's nothing. Everything else was pretty standard - noodles were chewy, beef was tender. If you do like a little bit of spice, their XO sauce is a killer - just a little bit and it changes the broth drastically. Deer Garden has been sort of my go-to place when I'm sick, or feel like I need to warm up with a nice bowl of comfort food. Been here a handful of times for both dine in and take out but never got around to writing a review here. They have a bunch of different locations in the GTA I believe and they should all offer the same standard menu. This place is known for their fish broth noodles in a build-your-own kind of format where you select which type of broth, toppings, and any other extra addons like appetizers and specialty HK style drinks. I typically go for the Original Fish Broth, thick rice noodles, sliced beef and fish fillet. It's a good mix of everything and the broth is nice and light compared to a ramen broth for example. The whole thing is just solid and gets the job done when you're craving some noodle soup. Only reason it doesn't get the 4 stars is the value. Prices for this place especially have skyrocketed and its around $15 for a bowl which doesn't seem like good value anymore for what you get. read more

They let you customize your soup bowls : your choice of soup base with noodles + 2 toppings and a Hong Kong style hot drink for just $12. We were welcomed with a hot jasmine tea. I ordered Malay laksa soup with egg noodles topped with sliced beef brisket and bak choy. It comes in a big bowl, I couldn't finish it, and they gave me a container for leftovers. Noodles and meat were cooked perfectly. The soup base was so damn delicious and had a great spice level. We also ordered teriyaki chicken with egg on rice. The chicken was juicy and so flavourful. The presentation of the both the dishes was phenomenal. Both our dishes came with hot HK milk tea. It's was like chai tea, but had more herbal flavour of tea, we both enjoyed the drink. I have dined here with my family for years. Their food has never disappointed. We have to get the laksa every time because it is just extremely flavourful and delicious. I also get their sandwiches every time which is fresh and quite tasty. Recently, we tried their hainanese chicken rice which was surprisingly good. Though the food quality still remains quite good, I'm not as quick to come here because their prices have been slowly creeping up while service slowly drops. The waitresses are not necessarily rude per say, but they also don't really acknowledge their customers as it takes one too many tries to wave someone down when you need something. They also don't say much to you throughout the whole process and take your order without making a single moment of eye contact. I typically order their Malay laksa because I find it super tasty and the perfect amount of spice. Today, I opted for this soup base with rice noodles; sliced beef brisket and pork stomach for my two toppings that's included in the $11.99 price; as well as added a pan fried pork chop for an additional charge of $2.95. For my drink, I upgraded to their honey green milk tea for $3 (actually amazing, you need to try if you haven't!) As you can see, all theses upgrades and additional charges really add up! It's good... but honestly to me it's "normal" level lol Soup and noodles is always a good idea on my menu especially in winter weather (Canadian winters!). But, imo, if I had to choose between getting noodles here or getting a pho, I'd choose pho any day, just because it's pho! So, parking here isn't great, as usual in this Plaza. It's very limited, literally maybe 10 spots and then you gotta either go park underground or drive around back and then walk to the restaurant. There is quite a bit of seating at the restaurant and pretty spacious too. The booth seat cushions needs some updating actually, like some are ripped so don't go wearing shorts in there unless you wanna scratch or cut the back of your thighs lol The food like I mentioned is normal, not exceptionally great but not bad either. You get to customize whatever noodles and protein and veggie choices you want. The portion is a good size too. So you pretty much get what you pay for. Came here on a Tuesday night for dinner and we were so lucky that we arrived before 7 pm when there were tables left. It wasn't long after that there was a queue for tables. We went with the Chinese sausage and cured meat bowl of rice and a bowl of customizable noodles with the desert wings. There are sheets of paper for you to choose your soup base, type of noodles, veggies, protein and drink. There's snacks that you can add to your meal for $2.50. That's where the wings came in. The waitress let us know that the rice would take longer and we were fine with that. There's a decent amount of ingredients that they give you. A lot of time I feel like noodle dishes are 80% noodles at other places. The soup is delicious and no MSG. I wasn't dying of thirst unlike at other places. There aren't enough servers for the amount of customers in the restaurant so things like getting your tea refilled doesn't happen. They give you the bill quite early and even when you haven't asked for it yet. My theory is that they want you to pay and not walk out on them. read more

3.5 As consistent with most reviews, I would say Deer Garden is a solid 3.5 stars. I really like the customizable menu where you can choose soup base, noodles, protein and toppings. The restaurant boasts lots of seating and a clean, contemporary interior...and is usually PACKED. I don't think I've ever visited when it's not packed. The seating is comfortable though a bit crowded. The noise level is usually quiet enough though to have a conversation with your dining peers without having to shout. The food quality is here quite good I would say - tasty soup basis, fresh noodles, and great options for toppings. This is one of the few places where you can have fish or vegetarian soup bases - perfect for vegetarian-ish people like myself. The noodles come glistening just like in studio ghibli animes. It's delightful. I like the spicy soup basis and usually get all vegetarian of fish toppings. The price range now can be up to $18...if you decide to customize the soup base to fish (which I usually do) along with an iced drink. Today I decided to try something new and ordered the gingko and pepper soup - did not like this at all, too numbing and spicy for me and eating it was a struggle. My sister loves this flavour though. I don't know why theres on a 3.5 rating on yelp, these other Yelpers must be getting some god-level Chinese food regularly. As a visitor from SF, with somewhat disappointing Chinese food, Deer Garden was excellent . For around $12 CAD you can choose from a variety of broths, toppings (2), noodles, milk tea, and the choice of another side for $3. I'm glad I had some help from some seasoned DGS veterans in picking my meal since it can be a bit overwhelming. I wanted something lighter so I opted for the fish broth, with wide rice noodles, and both pieces of fish and fish tofu. I also got a side of fried pork cutlet. The portion was massive. The soup itself already had a bunch of vegetables and the fish topping went really well with it. You can definitely notice that there is no MSG in the soup because there isn't a strong aftertaste after you leave. The broth was so good and clean enough that I drank all of it. I was ready to die but it was so tasty. The customizability means that you could keep coming here and always get something different but confident that it will be delicious! read more

At the same time, she gave the bill without asking. Minutes after that, she collected our drinks that I barely drank because it was still hot and told us they were busy and we had to leave! We're not kids and we weren't loitering, we didn't even finish out meal! It was past 1pm and the wait at the door was now only 3-4 people. I'm never going there again. If you can tolerate the rude service, Deer Garden is your typical build-your-own noodle soup. Choose a soup base, noodles, 2 toppings and a (hot) drink for $10.75, which is cheap. I love that you can customize your dishes and add whatever you like and don't add what you don't like. All of which were very tasty and really fresh tasting. I felt like I wanted to keep eating even though u was so full. Giving this place 3.5 stars. I frequent this location on Friday nights. They started a promotion a while back where you get 10% off if you come in after 9 p.m. (not sure if this is still happening but worth asking!) and an even more recent promo where you can add a third topping for free to your noodle combo. I usually order either the original fish soup (no MSG) or Malay laksa soup. They're both pretty good and flavourful. They are also very generous with topping portions! My bowl is always overflowing with fish slices, bok choy and bean curd sticks. I always ask for their chilli oil too - it's pretty awesome. The hot milk tea I get with my noodle combo has never disappointed either. However, they have been consistently inconsistent with (1) leaving traces of parsley/cilantro in orders even though we marked on the order sheet that we didn't want it - a huge turnoff for cilantro haters, and (2) having little pieces of other toppings in the orders. For example, on multiple occasions I've found bits of beef in my bowl even though that was not among the toppings I chose. Not a big issue for me but would be for vegetarians. I've never had an issue with service here. It's always been speedy like a typical Chinese restaurant. read more
