Nice spot to stop in after a Sunday ride. Prices are very reasonable compared to other places in Newark. The food is traditional bar fare which is great if you're not looking for dishes that should have a pronunciation guide on the menu or have to google to figure out what the ingredients are. Tried the Chesapeake wings and was disappointed, unfortunately. Pretty much just tasted like plain wings that you would pick up in a bag in the frozen food section. Mannnn.... I used to party in this place in my younger days with a fake ID.... Now.... I'm on Yelp writing a review for their Sunday brunch ‍....Anyway, this place is great. The atmosphere....the live music...and to top it off, the breakfast was really good. I actually just came here for nostalgia sake, but I'll be back again for the food. Horribly dirty!!!! Food on the floor, lettuce tomatoes on the handicap ramp, discusting!!!! The bar was dirty. The tables needed to be bussed, and most of the employees were doing nothing standing around talking to each other, not caring what the placed looked like.... the bartender was working her butt off but the bar top was dirty. We were in the mood for apps and drinks last Sunday and decided to give Deer Park Tavern a try. This place has been around forever so I was hoping for a better than average experience.....sadly, we were disappointed. The ambiance is dark and dreary. We were seated right by the door to the kitchen and I noticed quite a bit of trash on the floor. We ordered the asian sesame wings, fried brussels sprouts, french onion soup and crab corn chowder. The brussels sprouts were.........edible. Very, very salty and just kinda meh. The wings came out and were very pale.......I was fully expecting them to be gross. Surprisingly - they were actually pretty good. The blue cheese was not. My crab corn chowder looked nothing like the pics I saw online. It was basically a clear broth with a TON of canned corn kernels, big chunks of potato with mushy (canned?) crab meat. Inedible. The french onion soup was pretty good although the onions were cut in large chunks. Our server, Piper, was wonderful! She was very friendly and attentive. Deer Park clearly caters to the college students and that is fine, I was just hoping for a better experience from such a well established staple of the community. read more

The noise is deafening. There's a singer on Sunday morning using an amplifier in the small front room which means everyone is screaming to be heard. We asked to be seated upstairs so we could talk (which is why you come out with friends) but were told they weren't seating upstairs. Food came out cold. Very disappointed. read more

This is a staple in the Newark main street lifestyle. We grew up going there when we were teenagers to hanging out there on a Saturday or Sunday making our own bloody marys from their bloody mary bar. From the nachos, burgers and the popcorn it's a great place to just grab a bite and a drink. Ryan and Beligio from behind the bar always have our drinks ready when they see us walk in. Our favorite haunt from 35 years ago when we went to UD, so we went back for brunch during a reunion. The mains (an omelette and a frittata) were really tasty but I'm slightly embarrassed to say that the tater tots were the highlight! So crispy and just the right amount of salty fried goodness! Our only disappointment was that the bathroom was perfectly mundane--clean and nondescript rather than smothered in creative graffiti as it was in the '80s. A more significant issue was that our waitress seemed a little put out when we refused the (still unwrapped) straws for our water. She left them on the table and when I asked her to put them in her apron pocket as other wait staff had done (the perfect way to offer a straw to those who want them and not to those who don't) she made a point of saying "No, I'll put them back". Food was just ok, drinks were ok.... But the hostess/server really is clueless on Covid protocols.. The entire place had 4 groups of people eating, and the server seated us 8 feet from 4 young guys who were really loud and used the F word in every single sentence. Really shocking as just about the entire place was wide open and shocking they tolerated the 4 young guys being so rude and loud. I came here for the Tuesday $4 Long Islands! This review will be about the Long Island experience alone. I hope to come back later and update this review after trying some of their delicious food deals. (The burgers look huge!) I actually had two Long Islands: one before 8PM and one around 11:30PM. When I came in around 7:30PM there were only a few others at the bar, the restaurant was nicely lit, and the service was quick. I was delighted to see freshly made complimentary popcorn at their popcorn machine. The snack was wonderfully buttery and I couldn't help but to serve myself a heaping bowl of it. The Long Island was served in a large glass and, despite it being delicious, was surprisingly alcoholic. Definitely worth the money. I can't say the same for the Long Island I had closer to midnight. We came back to DP later in the night and found bouncers checking IDs at the door. One of the bouncers proceeded to bend my REAL ID 90 degrees over and over while asking me random questions like "what is the capital of Florida"? I understand that I look young for my age (I'm 22) and that a Florida ID in Delaware may seem out of place, but come on....I was worried that my ID was going to snap at some point. Better questions could have also been asked. Anyway, after finally getting in, I found that the interior of DP was darker and the music was louder and the place was decently full with dancing customers. The Long Island I ordered closer to midnight was nothing like the one I had earlier in the day. It was much smaller, served in a plastic cup, and filled to the brim with ice. I had a great experience eating lunch here today. We brought our puppy and ate outside. The DP is very dog friendly. The waitress was super attentive and very kind. She made us smile and she was great with the puppy. We ordered the Tavern Sandwich and the Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese. Both dishes were excellent! They tasted great! I am typically pretty picky at restaurants - and I am not shy to send dishes back or voice a concern. Everything at the DP was awesome. We plan to go back with the pup very soon and do lunch again. I overheard: "I wouldn't kick her outta bed." from some of the guys near me and was witness to some freaking massive nachos that they serve here. A huge plus? Dogfishead on tap! Came to Deer park as part of a bar crawl with some friends, the place was pretty nice inside and the beers were reasonable. They had Dogfish head black and Blu on tap which I was super impressed by and I ended up ordering that. It was well worth it. The upstairs had a decent sized dance floor as well as an outside area that was pretty nice. Overall I would come here again if I was looking for a bar in the area. read more

I will start this by staying I am a native Delawarean and went to the U of D. I brought my fiancé to town this weekend to see where I grew up and went to college. I have have literally spent many night in this Upon walking in to the hostess stand to be seated I was asked the normal "how many?" When a bearded waiter walked towards us and yelled "EXCUSE ME, I SAID EXCUSE ME!" And walked between us and the hostess stand. He was carrying one plate to the downstairs bar. I would understand if it was something hot but even the servers at the stand asked "who's that new guy?, that was ridiculous! We are sorry!" When we finally were seated upstairs we had great service and a great meal. The eggs were cooked to order and the scrapple was fried (always a staple.). Our server was training a guy who was just as polite and friendly as our server was. I would love to give my old haunt more than one star but when I'm yelled at by a waiter 15 seconds after walking in I can't, especially when other staff immediately apologized. I had several good meals there over the past year, but the food today was horrible. The New England clam chowder which is supposed to be creamy and rich had the consistency of water. And no taste. The French onion steak sandwich barely had any meat in it. The Panini bread was good and the Au jus was tasty but not the sandwich. The buffalo ranch wrap was decent, but there was no blue cheese dressing or ranch with it. So it was dry and mediocre. Very disappointing. I actually ended up throwing most of it away. Due to there being a St Practice day event and a member of our group not being 21, we literally were not let in.....a reservation was made two weeks in advance and was completely disregarded by your bouncers...there was zero communication from the hosts end to our party in advance that this event was happening or the crucial fact that people under 21 would not be allowed in. A part of Newark history for so long. Deer Park is the definition of your local bar. Good, cheap drinks and greasy, cheap food. I go there every once in awhile for a happy hour that includes free wings, fries, tater tots or loaded potatoes or like (YES you read that right!) and movie-style popcorn where you can taste each granule of salt and allll the oil.
