Decent little shop and apple orchard with several varieties of apples, easy access, and avoids the crowds of some of the more well known spots in the area. However, the reason to visit is undoubtedly the apple fritters, made to order from thick slices of apple, hand dipped in batter and then fried before being tossed in cinnamon sugar. They are not dog friendly because they have at least one very docile resident dog that they want to keep free from being barked at or bitten by another dog. There is enough parking for the number of people I've seen there, even at their busiest, but it is possible that they could still run out of spaces if they get a sudden crowd. read more

We wanted to go apple picking and had heard of beak and skiff, so we headed there. When we got to beak and skiff there was an enormous amount of traffic and the parking lot was chaotic. The lines to wait for the tractor rides to get to the orchards or for drinks and food were very long. We decided to see if there were any other options nearby, and are so glad we did! Deer Run Farms is a few minutes down the road from beak and skiff, and in my opinion a much more family friendly place. There were many varieties of apples for self picking, cider, apples fritters, donuts, and other food for sale without much wait, and beautiful views! Is it really fall in CNY if you don't bite into a hot and fresh apple cider pastry straight from the fryer and go apple picking? Shamefully, a couple of Autumns have passed here in Syracuse without me indulging in these activities. This year, I declared, no more! Not wanting to waste the one perfect week of Autumn weather, knowing a cold snap was sure to inevitably follow, I decided to check out one of the farms for some socially distanced fall fun. I choose Deer Run because it was a smaller family business, and seemed like it might be less crowded than some of the bigger, more commercial farms in the area. The drive out was very pleasant. About 15 minutes from Syracuse, near Lafayette. I did some light leaf-peeping on my journey there. Though the farm was arguably less crowded than other places, it was still hopping mid-to-late afternoon. My one real complaint is that the shop was small, and distancing in line was next to impossible. There were no stickers on the floor to delineate spaces, but still, at this point, the general public has seen enough distance markers to be able to judge that standing one foot away from the person in front of you is too close, so shame on the other customers for not observing space on their own. Nonetheless, everyone wore masks, and the staff did make efforts to move clientele quickly out of the small space, for instance by offering to bring baked goods outside when ready. I purchased a caramel apple, which was a little pricey, but delicious and worth the splurge, especially since I can't seem to find this favorite fall treat in any of the grocery stores I go to. I also purchased the smallest apple-picking bag, $10 for 10 pounds, and 3 of the farm's famous apple fritters. The staff told me my donuts would be ready in 7-10 minutes, which was the perfect amount of time for me to do some apple picking. There were many rows of trees, each marked with a hand-painted sign displaying the type. I thought that a map would have been helpful, too. Maybe there was one. Maybe I missed it. If I had more time or came with friends, I would have been more open to exploring, but as is I tried to time my picking to correspond with my fritters. Wandering behind the shop, there was plenty to explore and pick. I loaded up on Paula Reds, Cortlands, Empires, and Macintosh. Not sure if others were ripe and pickable, but I was happy with my haul and returned to the shop for my fritters. The fritters alone were worth the drive. Oh my goodness. They were warm, right out of the frier. Not too sweet, but sweet enough. The dough was crisp, but the apple inside was soft, though not mushy. Everything I'd been dreaming about the past month and more. I gave some of my apples away, and have been working through the rest. A couple of them have some light brown spots inside, or teensy wormholes. Deer Run shies away from pesticides, so that's par for the course. This was a really nice way to spend the afternoon, and I've been enjoying the spoils for the past week, and will be munching apples for weeks to come! read more

The original home of the apple fritter! As outlandish as it may seem, this place touts itself as the home of the original apple fritter. And having tried it, I can attest that it is unique enough to be a distinct possibility. Compared to the other you-pick apples in the area, there are only two reasons to come to Deer Run -- the apple fritters, and the apple fritters. Made DAILY until 5:30 pm, they're unlike any apple fritter I've had before -- and excellent! The fritters are made to order, starting by slicing and coring an apple to create apple rings. The apples are then dipped in batter, deep fried, and rolled in sugar and spice. The result is something like a doughnut with an apple ring in the middle, and it is delicious. If you're looking for the idyllic "Disney" roadside country store experience, there are others with a little more gloss and luster. Deer Run is more the authentic experience, with authentically excellent apple fritters. Delicious! read more

I'm up from Nashville, TN visiting my parents and my Dad loves Deer Run Farms' apple fritters. Growing up in central NY I miss the fresh cider, so we stopped and bought both today. One word, AMAZING! We also bought apples and of course, cheese to go with it. The apples are fresh, crisp, with a great variety. The little store has lots of gifts for apple lovers, including knickknacks and preserves. This place is way too underrated! The apples they have for "you - pick" are Macintosh, Empire, Idared, Red Delicious, and Cortland. I loved the Macintosh the most and Empire was good too. They have other varieties in their store (Honeycrisp, Autumn crisp etc), as well as baked goods. I smelled the amazing apple fritters but didn't get a chance to get it. Next time! I did the you - pick option and it was wonderful! It was a lot of fun, the apple prices were great ($0.50/lb!!!!), and the apples were chemical-free! At first I was a little worried that the apple quality would be bad from worms etc. because of the lack of pesticides. I was pleasantly surprised to find many great quality apples (no spots, no holes)!! You just have to reach higher and go through branches. But that's just part of the experience. :) I highly recommend this place for anyone just looking to pick good, clean apples for a great price! More people needs to support chemical-free/organic apple orchards! The only place I'll go for U-Pick apples, fritters, cider, and more. They have kept their family-oriented atmosphere; much more relaxing and enjoyable than the commercialized farms in the area. A bushel of apples should be 42-48 pounds. I measured mine and it was only 35 pounds. Tried calling and theirs no way to speak to someone. They charged me $90. What a ripoff! Especially when I found out they don't even grow them. I went to Windy Hills in Lenardsville and it cost me $45 a bushel! Last time I'll darken there door! read more

Was excited to try here since they have chemical-free apples for u-pick and the good reviews. Their apples were $1/lb and they had Ida Red and Cortlands. They did warn you that the apples wouldn't look all that nice, but we had hopes of finding the 'good ones' up higher. The Ida Reds were really bad; all of them had bad spots, dimples, or holes. The Cortlands were better, but most of them we didn't even want to take home. We bought some just for the sake of buying some. I have high hopes for their apples in the future. Hopefully the apples will improve and be better quality and be organic. The apple fritters were yummy, but expensive at 3 for $6. We didn't realize that until we stopped at a couple other places later. The ones here were made to order, thin apple rings with thin coating. The apples they sell bagged in store are not chemical-free. They had a couple low-key dogs out and about that were in and out of the store and on the grounds just in case you are with anyone really scared of them.
