Deetjen's is located in a beautiful setting that feels full of history. We arrived for breakfast and were seated promptly by a friendly staff. The fluffy eggs were cooked well, but served with on the verge of being over cooked bacon. The potatoes that accompanied the eggs tasted very green. The toast served with raspberry jam was tasty. The eggs Benedict were cooked well, but the hollandaise tasted a way too tart. The pancake was huge and had a hint of cinnamon. It was good, but a little on the dense side. The coffee was light, but not bad. Overall for what you get the prices are on the high side. I had really high expectations for the food, but I was left a little disappointed and enjoyed the ambiance more than I did the food. read more

Found this on yelp and decided to give it a try. It's a very intimate and quaint restaurant that had a lot of history to offer on its buildings and reasons for being there. We started off with two glasses of sparkling wine which was ok. Then my mom and I both ordered eggs Benedict. It was good but not unique. The potatoes that came on the side were delicious. The prices are high but it offers a very unique dinning experience. Each table is different with three different rooms. Our server was great, friendly and attentive. The parking can be a bit much on a busy day. This should be a place to stop on your visit in Big Sur. read more

I know there are many mixed reviews about Deetjen's Inn + the restaurant already, but I decided to separate the restaurant and give to this marvel it's own space on Yelp. Especially that, please notice, the phone number is slightly different. I am giving you the direct number that you should use in order to make (MANDATORY) reservations here. This restaurant has a very unique, distinct atmosphere. Needless to say, you can immediately feel the long history and tradition behind it- to us, this was one of the most authentic old restaurants in America. Part of this effect is achieved through a great lighting- it is clear that whoever manages the restaurant has a great taste in that domain. We made a reservation many days in advance. Even though we were visiting Deetjen's on Tuesday evening- not the most touristy out of all evenings- it was completely full! We stepped inside, and immediately got embraced by the cosiness & warmth. Divided in 3 halls with about 6-7 tables each, the bar / reception is situated in the middle hall. We waited for at least 8-9 minutes to even get noticed... The cocky waiter - a late 50's or early 60's tall Caucasian guy with a short white beard- and his young Mexican lady-helper who assists with the water + cleaning up the tables, passed many times by us & asked me to move away. Once is fine, twice is OK... but gees! This turned me off a little bit. I was expecting somebody to usher us to the reserved table. It wasn't till the 9th minute (I was grinding a little bit already) that the second Caucasian gentleman, behind the bar, and also with a white beard, finally turned towards us & said "how may I help you"... "WELL it's about time, gees", I said inside my head, but what he actually heard was "my name is Miki and I have a reservation for 2 persons at 7:15 PM". We were seated at an excellent table, which immediately improved my mood. Gees, why am I such as spoiled guy? I guess I am used to a very quick and quite servile type of service... Here, the waiters make you feel like you are going to be serving them? But like I said, I somehow succeeded to shake off the initial impression cus I wanted to enjoy and have fun. Our table had a real candle that was placed in the appropriate height so it illuminated well the whole table. The table-cloths were in dark red color. A full set of utensils (not just fork and knife) were placed nicely and correctly around sparkling clean white plates. The bread that was brought to us was healthy (wheat) and very warm and aromatic. Yum. The spread that accompanied the bread was sort of similar to a Boursin cheese with garlic & herbs, but wasn't as creamy so we felt was slightly on the starchy side. But wasn't bad, and I ended up spreading at least half of it. My doctor will show me a red carton next time I visit, I am sure. We ordered the Asparagus Soup and the Organic Mixed Greens salad with lovely blue cheese and appropriate amount of nicely-mixed salad dressing. I loved my salad, it was better than most other organic green salads I had lately (but also about 3-4 dollars more expensive... which is really justified, considering the exclusive Big Sur location!!!). The soup was, I thought, OK- my date was sweet enough to allow me to taste it, and I wasn't super impressed. I personally prepare a little bit better the creamy Asparagus soup at home. But anyway, it was still very decent. Maybe it wasn't the soup, it was me... I was still a little under the initial impression. You know, when I enter a place where they don't show me respect in front of my date, I get real scared as to how the evening will turn out... :D My beautiful accomplice ordered their special: Sea Bass prepared with a sort of potato salad with shrimp and other small bits (great side, by the way, so yummy)- her fish was excellent. Priced "competitively" at 31 or 32 dollars, not too shabby. Again, consider the location please. My Lamb Shank was pretty amazing. I'd say one of the best shanks I've ever had here in America! Without any exaggeration. Right around that time, we heard MEOWWW from the back. There were several families with younger kids, but they were all in another hall, so we had quite a bit of peace- but we thought one of these kids is MEOW-ing. But nope... It was a real cat. This cat had an excellent personality. By the way, he's very handsome, he's really clean, neutered, calm, happy, well taken care of Cat. His name is... Fabio. Umm? When Fabio showed up, most people tried to reach and grab / caress him... I didn't. I am a cat person, so I know that cats want to be respected, gees. Just like a human being. If you see a cute guy or girl, you don't just go there and start caressing or squeezing him/her, right? or you will get sued. Anywayz. Delicious food and lovely candle lit atmosphere. However the hostess bizarrely told my partner (who is black) and I that she couldn't seat us at a table last Monday night even though the place was half empty because all the empty tables were reserved. At first we felt ok about eating at the bar, but then watched three white couples without reservations get tables after us (including one couple who just came for dessert). Usually I'm pretty comfortable sitting at a bar but at Deetjen's the height difference between the bar and the stools was rather uncomfortable. The hostess also wouldn't let us sit in the middle of the small bar, and made us pick either end because she said she had more people coming, which also never happened. The rest of the restaurant is lovely and quiet and intimate but the bar also functions as the work station for the servers, where they grind and make coffee, bring food in and out of the kitchen through a swinging door, and where the hostess answers the phone and checks in guests for the inn as well as the restaurant. So we (the only people of color in the restaurant that night) were forced to eat in this hectic uncomfortable bar corner of the restaurant, while half the restaurant remained empty. I'm also seven months pregnant, which makes her decision even to put us in this uncomfortable seating even more bizarre. The hostess actually came over at the end of our meal and said that she realized she could have given us a table, but we were almost finished and there was no point in asking for a switch. She did have plenty of time to come over earlier during our multi-course meal to offer us a table but didn't... My partner is a very sweet and positive person and made sure we spent our dinner focused on each other, so we still had a good time, but I'm posting this in hopes that they won't do this again to other people. read more

Will never go here again. Service was incredibly rude. We made a reservation well over two months in advance for our anniversary dinner. In attendance was myself, husband and our 1 1/2 old son. Upon making reservations we indicated that we would have our son in attendance with us, and we were told it was alight. Kids are welcome- that's not the case. About halfway into our dinner the manager came to our table to tell us that we needed to bring our son into the parking lot because other guests were complaining about the noises he was making. Really? It was embarrassing and plain rude. My husband and I both work at restaurants in Chicago and came to Deetjens for tradition, because we loved it there so much. That said, as a waitress I would NEVER go up to a table and rudely ask them to take their child to the parking lot because other tables are complaining. As a waitress, when said situation arises this is what I would I do: I buy the table complaining a round of drinks. I apologize for the noise of the nearby table. I smile nicely and say "I'm sorry for the noise. I'm sure you remember what it's like to be a kid. Furthermore, I'm sure you remember what it's like to be a parent just trying to eat dinner too. We lucked into last minute NYE reservations here the day before NYE, so we got the last available seating which was at 9:45pm. We looked at the prefix menu, and it seemed pretty yummy. It didn't have anything about champagne included or price anywhere. I searched pretty hard too. Anyways, we thought it would be around $100 bucks or so, no drinks included. We hungrily awaited our long drive to the inn and when the time came, we made it down the dark Rt 1. It was pretty well-signed and we didn't miss it, but parking was a joke. We got stuck in the pull-through area between the inn itself and it took forever to maneuver it back out. Lucked into one little spot right on the Highway. Otherwise we would have been SOL. The inn itself looks super cute and authentic! But this review is for the restaurant. You have to walk all the way through the main room to the bar area to get noticed/seated. the hostess was nice and friendly. No one came to introduce themselves as our waiter for 10 mins. We kept glancing at the back room to see what was going on--the chef and other workers were whooping it up at one of the tables. I think they saw us peeping so finally our waitress came over. Nothing too friendly, just a "Hi, how are you. Do you know what you want? Would you like water or champagne?" We were very ready to order after 10 minutes of chillin with the menu, so we did so, and ordered some wine. She was prompt bringing the wine, and bread and garlic with a pinch of olive oil came next. I mean, we had to move the garlic oil to the other side of the table and I asked for some regular oil or butter, it was so potent. She didn't seem too hard-pressed, but definitely not wholly accommodating. The guy who filled the water was pretty prompt for the whole meal. The courses were sort of slow, but it was after 10 on NYE so who knows what was going on back there. FOOD! Well, the first course was a soup and it was yummy -- squash with truffle creme fraiche and bacon. BUT HERE IS THE KICKER. The waitress brought out my soup to me with ONLY MY BACON ON THE SIDE. She puts it down and says, "I wasn't sure, but I ASSUMED you wanted it on the side." Uh...WHAT? Just because I was "picky" enough to ask nicely for non-garlicked oil? Or because I am a young girl who seems like what, I don't want the bacon? I want the fricking bacon! It's extremely rude to assume based on looks what a customer wants. I mean, for that reason ALONE I wouldn't come back. I poured the bacon BACK into the dish, and felt pretty pissed. The bacon itself sort of smelled like cat food, so probably had been cooked awhile ago. Wasn't crazy about that. The crispy tater cake was good and crispy. A bit cold. The sorbet palette cleanser was too sweet. Our main dishes....ugh. He got the Filet Mignon and it was pretty chewy. He couldn't even finish it and it was not a large dish. My wild rice and winter vegetables was inedible. I couldn't send it back, it was too late. The rice was terrible, the "vegetables" were a few sprinkles of broccoli, maybe a squash or two, covered in bitter beet sauce. Why couldn't I send it back, you ask? When dessert rolled around everyone had left and they were cleaning up and trying to hurry us out. The waitress brought our "champagne" to go to get us to get out. We didn't even know we were getting champagne, or we'd not have ordered extra wine! The atmosphere is quaint and romantic. I would have preferred not to sit by the huge wall full of shelves of trinkets lest I back my chair into them. The cat wandering around was really cool. The candlelight was cozy. BUT OVERALL: But the service -- ASSUMING what I wanted, not totally warm or inviting, not communicative, the staff and their brouhaha around in the next room, and the super sub-par food made me really REALLY disappointed. My FAVORITE Big Sur eatery. There are no ocean views from Deetjen's, but they do have AMAZING food in spades! It feels like the Big Sur of Henry Miller lore inside this place. We ate here for breakfast and dinner and both experiences were 5-star all the way. I'm a New Yorker, so I guess my standards are pretty high. So, here's the run down. It's very romantic here - low ceilings, low lighting with soft sputtering candelight, the decor of your slightly senile Aunty's country cottage. Which was slightly awkward for my friend and I. But I can definitely see the possibilities. Dinner was lovely - I had a mushroom soup, which was heavy on truffle oil. They bring you bread with chunks of garlic marinated in olive oil to spread. I pretty much REEKED of garlic as I walked back to my room. I followed this up with the seafood paella, which would have been delicious had I not scorched the roof of my mouth on the first bite. Not that this is their fault - I guess I just couldn't wait to dig in. It was a lovely meal - generous portions- we had no room for dessert that night. But we came back the next for the creme brulee, which was smashing. Breakfast was so-so. The fresh fruit was lovely - but not really through their efforts :-) My banana bread tasted bland and ever so slightly stale. Ever given a 70% tip? Deetjen's might prompt you to do so! I was there at 8 AM this morning, right in time for breakfast. I was immediately seated and served by a very warm and friendly staff, who - in spite of the arriving customers sitting down - gave me their undivided attention whenever I needed something. Everything is relaxedly paced; the staff obviously enjoys their line of work, bantering with the customers, taking and serving orders in an exceptionally timely manner. I had a blueberry pancake, two eggs over easy, ham, and coffee. Warning: the pancakes are big! So you'd best bring a hearty appetite with you if you plan on getting a full stack. Everything was delicious and very well cooked. It's not everyday you come across a pancake that has the "just-right" amount of a light, buttery rim that adds that extra, delectable crisp. Deetjen's holds a special place in my heart because of fond memories of dining here with my parents as a child on family trips. I love the ambience of the place: low ceilings, mismatched furniture, memorabilia everywhere and the distinct "hippie" vibe. The service is always good and they do very well given the volume of customers and tight quarters. Everything about the ambience and service were as I remembered and a 5 star attraction, in my view. Ok, so why the 3 star rating? It all comes down to the food and the food was worse than mediocre. We went for dinner on a very busy Friday night, so maybe the kitchen was just overwhelmed but the food came out in a timely fashion. We split the calamari salad to start and then my husband had the vegetarian pasta and I had the chef's signature paella. The calamari salad was the highlight of the meal and was, at best, just ok. The seasonings were a bit bland and the dish had too much oil, but the calamari was fresh. The vegetarian pasta was cooked well beyond all dente and was over-sauced in a very watery version a white wine reduction. My paella, however, was were the train came off the rails. This was the chef's signature dish and it wasn't even paella! It was a seafood stew with lots of broth and rice. Paella is supposed to be a cohesive rice dish akin to risotto, not a soup. The flavors were ok, but there was a lack of chorizo and it was all a little too "tomatoey". We skipped the sweets after being warned that they weren't the house speciality, figuring that if the signature dish isn't great then there was no chance for dessert. All in all, a bittersweet experience. So glad Deetjen's is still going strong with the same character, but time for a new chef! read more

I'm always looking for amazing breakfast spots and found this quaint, small, charming and historical restaurant on Yelp. This place has been around since the 1930s and is registered on the national historic landmark. It is halfway from Pfeiffer Beach and halfway to McWay Falls. It is also next to my two bucket list places I would love to stay at which are Post Ranch Inn and Ventana. If you are 6 feet tall and above, you'll definitely hit your head on the ceiling. Also, there are basically no parking lots so you have to be creative about where to park if you are dining and not a guest at the Inn. It is surrounded by beautiful Redwoods. We parked in a little area that had a dip because all of the other spaces were full. What I loved about this place is that they are dog friendly on their patio. My mother in law was definitely nostalgic because they had a lot of plants growing on the patio that her mother had. I had the huevos con chorizo. My husband had the stuffed french toast with homemade raspberry cream cheese and my mother in law had the short stack. They both loved their dishes. My husband said that the french toast was the closest to his mother's. I liked my eggs and chorizo, but I was a little underwhelmed with my beans and potatoes. I think I've been spoiled with beans and potatoes in the central valley and my mother in law so I have high expectations. They also do not serve soda so I had water instead. I did have the cappuccino and it was the best cappuccino I've ever had. Our waitress was extremely nice as well and we appreciated that. The restroom is not in the restaurant, but across the way. Between the three of us, it was about 50 bucks. I had a grand time and would be back to try the french toast and drink the cappucino. read more

Tucked away in a curve cut out of the redwoods along Highway 1, the restaurant in Deetjen's Inn is a true gem in a gorgeous setting. The menu is focused, the service makes you feel like an old friend dropping in for a fine meal, and the atmosphere is cozy- it didn't hurt we had a table just in front of the fireplace. Our soup to start, a seafood chowder with sweet corn, was magnificent. Perfect for 2 to share with the bread and garlic/sardine mix they bring to start. My only gripe about the place was probably that their bread wasn't anything spectacular, which in a way is hard to believe with Big Sur Bakery just a few miles up the road. Our entrees were really unique and perfectly done. My lamb shank (encrusted in honey bread crumbs with giant white beans & eggplant) took home the prize for best-smelling dish at first whiff (probably EVER) and tasted incredible. It was juicy and hearty and fancy all at once. The fish of the day, a monk, fish was also quite good, but to be honest I would order the lamb over and over and over again. We skipped dessert, as nothing sounded masterfully concocted as the main dishes did. You're probably better off going to Big Sur Bakery for that. Anyway, totally worth making a reservation and driving through the dark woods at night to eat here for what can truly be an inspired, romantic, dinner. read more

Does this place get ANY cuter?! It looks straight out of a Woody Allen movie ... I've only had breakfast here ... about a thousand times. It's busy (get over it) ... it's Big Sur - slow down buddy. Pancakes -- amazing. The blueberry ones are a fun tart treat. They use real maple syrup here folks. How are their avocados always the softest? Have some secret there? The eggs and the eggs benedict are beautiful. The smoked salmon is super fresh. Banana bread - whaaaaaat? Ask for it warmed up with some butter. Can we talk about the Chicken SAUSAGE?!?! I mean what is this stuff?? I hear they get it from Carmel Meats (which I'll be calling for Xmas presents). It melts in your mouth -- here's a tip: take a bite of this, dip in syrup, layer on a bite of a buttermilk pancake smothered in butter and BOOM! You're welcome. Honestly its adorable and everything I've eaten here is great for breakfast. And when you're finished, take a walk on the grounds and take a few romantic selfies. read more

We never even got a chance to go in! We tried to park and we were directed by an employee that it was OK to park on the far corner of the parking area parallel to Hwy 1. My wife gets out of our truck and instantly gets verbally abused by some old hippy and starts insulting the worker that told us it was ok to park in that spot. We were going to move our truck but then we got another old hippy lady told us to move and park down the side road next to Hwy 1. That was enough for us so we decide to vote with our dollars and went to another restaurant. We were hard for our dollar and seems like these people have more business than they can handle!!! I first have to thank the artist couple we met in Carmel who told us about the killer breakfast at this little gem. After visiting, it's safe to say that I CANNOT WAIT to return here! What an enchanting location, place and restaurant. Words do not do it justice, unless you're an eloquent poet. Let me just tell you, the location will awe you, and the restaurant will not disappoint. It's quaint, historic, romantic and really peaks the curiosity in all. Read it's story, bask in the atmosphere, live in the past, and enjoy the present. It's seriously, one of my favorite places I've ever visited. I can't wait to stay at the resort. Oh, and the food and service were also, OUTSTANDING! read more

Let me start by saying this would have been a 5 star review if not for our server who was not blatantly rude, but just unfriendly enough to basically ruin my experience. Rather than list each way she irked me, I'll leave it at that. I plan to come back to Deetjen's, and if I see this woman coming to my table, I will request another server. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or what, but when you lay down $130 for dinner for two, you want to be treated pleasantly and with the utmost professionalism. The sick thing is I can't bring myself to leave less than a 15% tip for even the worst of service. Argh. The food was wonderful. The cheese plate included some great choices, but the camembert was served a bit too cold and for $18 we were expecting larger slices of cheese. By the time I finished my meal I was definitely full enough to not miss the extra calories, but the price of the plate should be brought down. We had paella and the catch of the day, halibut. Both were very good. The halibut was cooked to perfection and had a steaky quality similar to chicken breast. It was served over Deetjen's signature mash with fennel. Yum! Dessert was fresh berry panna cotta that was also quite well done. The wines we selected were wonderful. The restaurant is quaint and sweet like the entire property. I did notice that the speakers in the room where we sat were not turned on. I could hear classical music playing in the other room. We didn't have any sound to absorb our conversations. This equated to me hearing all about the botox injections the guy behind us recently had. I'm an eggs benedict addict and after seeing mention in Deetjen's reviews, I had to give them a try. They did not disappoint! I loved the fact that you could pick your "layers", either going for a traditional version or creating your own twist with ingredients like avocado, tomato and chicken apple sausage (which was particularly delicious). I ate here and at Big Sur Bakery and this is my preferred spot. It's much cuter, intimate and the service was more attentive and personal. Honestly, prices are the same as a normal brunch in SF. We had the huevos with chorizo and the egg skillet, both excellent picks and just enough food for us to not be overly stuffed but very satisfied (no leftovers on the plate). We also had a latte (delightfully strong and delicious) and a hot chocolate. Our wait on a Sunday morning of Veteran's Day was 20 minutes (arrived at 10:30am) and didn't feel long at all as we waited outside in the patio area that's just as beautiful as the inside. Stayed her a couple nights in big sur for spring break. What a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle. No wifi. No tv. No phone. Just a nice tranquil spot on the coast. We had breakfast here our first night. The cute antique restaurant went right along with the cottage we stayed in. I ordered the 2 egg breakfast, coffee and a order of French toast. We can only speak for the breakfast...the glorious, glorious breakfast. Fresh off our honeymoon in Big Sur, we ate here three days in a row for our morning sustenance. The rustic building, odd decorations, and resident cat all add to the experience. Food was fantastic, from the more basic eggs/toast/potato meal to the slightly less basic chorizo and eggs. Wifey said the vegetarian sausage was the best she'd had to date. The drive down the coast from Glen Oaks those foggy mornings for breakfast will stick with us for a long time. Finally made it to Deetjen's restaurant for breakfast. The drive down from Capitola takes about an hour and a half, so we left home early so we could get there soon after they opened. No wait for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Nice! Sweet little restaurant. We were greeted by the very enthusiastic hostess. Service was great. Friendly and efficient. Given everyone else's glowing reviews, I had to order the eggs Benedict and a single blueberry pancake. Jean ordered the Huevos Rancheros. We both enjoyed our food. The Eggs Benedict was probably the best I have ever had. Eggs perfectly poached, hollandaise very good. I was glad I only ordered one pancake because it was huge! Plate-sized and fluffy. We shared it. The cinnamon gives it a wonderful flavor. The only thing keeping that fifth star away was that the potatoes on both of our plates were sort of cold. Otherwise, great coffee for me, delicious chai tea for Jean and wonderful breakfast. Attentive service, multiple offers of coffee refills, but the servers didn't hover. It is Big Sur laid back, so more than once, guests would come through the double doors near our table and leave them open, which was a bit irritating after awhile on a foggy and cool Big Sur morning. Staff closed the doors, then we closed the doors, then other diners closed the doors. So if you sit by the double doors in back, you have been warned. Pro tip 1) they have an actual parking lot! You do not see it when you first pull in but if you continue carefully and slowly down the narrow lane and go over the wooden bridge to your right, you will see a pretty decent sized parking lot. A rare thing for Big Sur. Pro tip 2) breakfast reservations for parties of 6 or more. Otherwise, first come, first served. Having seen the cottages, I would love to spend a night or two there. Finally got to eat their eggs benedict again. When I came here for the first time long time ago, I did not know what it was. (It is now popular in Japan, but it was not so widely known in my time.) I have tried a quite a few eggs benedict, and now I know Deetjen's benedict is really really good. The hollandaise sauce is a bit more tangy than other places. It is very thick and got a little spice. The eggs were perfectly soft poached. Home fries is very very good. I usually get a little stomach pain after eating potatoes, but I did not get any pain in my stomach after eating breakfast here. We will come here again:) read more

We had an excellent dinner here with friends on our last night in Big Sur. The Good: - Amazing roasted garlic in olive oil with the bread basket - Nice wine selection - Lamb & Paella were both excellent The Bad: - It was a chilly, rainy night, and though we had a reservation, our table wasn't ready when we arrived, and we were sent to this odd little room (they call it their "library") with one tiny heater someone else was already in there using. To say it was an awkward wait for our table would be an understatement. - Though cute, and I'm sure very cuddly, the sight of the Inn's cat roaming around the restaurant and in & out of the kitchen was a bit unsettling... read more

It's attached to a place called Big SUr Inn. The hummus they give you with fresh bread is AWESOME. The vegetarian ravioli is delicious - my girlfriend and I split it and it was more than enough. DO NOT get the bread pudding, it's severely disappointing. PS: they like it when you call and make a reservation. read more
