They really drop the ball around the holidays, unfortunately. My family has been faithful to DeFilippis for years. We ordered ahead for pickup on the morning of Christmas Eve. In the past, they would open their window and allow the pickup orders to grab and go. With new ownership, it was a trainwreck. We got there very early and were stuck waiting for 2 hours. Yes, it was really that long. There was no separation of new orders and pickup, so those who ordered ahead had to stand behind those who were ordering for the first time. When we finally got to the front of the line, 2 hours later, our order was still being finished in the back.... I know. You think it'd be done considering it was ordered ahead... Be careful when ordering around the holidays. People were extremely unhappy. My advice is for them to ONLY accept order-ahead orders during the holidays so they're not stuck helping those who procrastinated while those who planned must wait. Ordered my wedding cake plus several dozen italian pasties from this bakery. Picked out a cake from THEIR catalogue that matched my inspiration photos, they said they could do it no problem. What I was presented with was a horrible, lopsided, sloppy cake that looked nothing like what I picked out. We reached out to the owners and they said they were proud of their product and will not be offering a refund. Now this horrible cake is in all my wedding photos forever- highly disappointed in the product and their customer service & surprised they even let a product like that out their door. This was my first time to this location, but the baked goods are still the most amazing you will find in all of Middletown. The girls were so helpful and friendly at the counter and even let me sample an almond cookie. We ended up getting a dozen cannolis, a napoleon, and a tres leches cake. Everything was absolutely delicious, but my favorite were the cannolis. If you're ever in Middletown, be sure to stop here and satisfy your sweet tooth! read more

Last week, we had our wedding cake made here, and it turned out amazing! It looked really good, and tasted great - vanilla cake, vanilla custard filling and whip cream frosting. The flowers were buttercream. Really glad we chose this bakery for our special day - thank you so much! The Spanish woman behind the counter seemed bothered by our presence. She placed all our cookies in a bag on top of each other, impatiently signed when we were trying to choose. After she put out apple cider donuts in the same bag as out vanilla frosted her intent became clear. Previous customers with smaller orders was leaving with neatly boxed items while we had over packed bags. I tried to ignore her behavior but i was slowly getting annoyed. Was with my son, so I purchased the items he wanted and left the bakery and will never patronize them again. After all that, the donuts tasted stale and the cookies fell apart and were all covered with melted chocolate. Bottom line, would NEVER patronize this establishment again. read more

Everything is oil based, no butter or cream, and the items lack that fresh bakery taste because of it. The icing leaves a greasy film in your mouth like crisco. I once got a chocolate chip cookie from here and had to spit out the first bite because it was as if someone poured the whole box of baking powder into that one cookie. It was like eating a battery. The ricotta cannoli used to be great and the only reason to stop by but they've started cutting it with something, I don't know what. They sell a ton of stuff here but every night they have to stuff half of their product in boxes and put them on a $4 sale rack because the items didn't sell in time. The donuts sell out all the time if you want donuts and coffee get here early! The black and white cookies are amazing and so is the lobster tail! This place is worth a visit. My eyes caught the tiramisu and I knew I had to buy it because my bf loves tiramisu as much as I do. I bought one just to try because I'm picky with my sweets and I was shocked how good it was. The time of arrival was going to be about fifteen minutes after closing so I called again and the understanding kind and sweet young lady who answered said she would wait for us even though she had an after business hour appointment. They also have a $3 sale section where they sell day-old goodies such as 8-packs of bagels and huge boxes of leftover donuts. From there I picked up a lobster tail and a chocolate éclair. After putting them in the oven for a little while, they turned out pretty decent. But of course, a day-old lobster tail will inevitably be stale so I was kinda digging my own grave there...hehe My friend also ordered a large chocolate chip cookie and a piece of frozen cheesecake. I'd say 7/10 for both in terms of taste. A few days ago, my coworker also came here and bought a birthday cake and it was pretty delicious. 8/10. We don't have any bakeries in my area. We were visiting Middletown and decided to stop here for a treat. I took my 3 kids and they all picked something different. The cookies were good and fresh and the eclair was the best I've had. My daughter picked a slice of strawberry shortcake and she enjoyed it so much we had to get another to take home. My son loved the fresh Cannoli, which is my favorite:) The prices were average as you would expect. They also had boxes of "Day old" donuts and cookies for $4 which also looked fresh. We drive 40 min every Sun morning after church and stand in line which is usually out the door...to stock up on fresh baked goods and pastries. I waited until I tried Defilippis a few times before to writing this. Pros: good prices - local business - friendly staff - variety - location - parking - one amazing pastry that one time. Cons: Quality cannot compare to other Italian/Sicilian bakeries I've eaten at. Pastries, cake, and bread taste cheap, like in a very airy and fluffy way I'd expect from Walmart. Eclairs are the cut open sandwich variety with a weird custard and get very stale around the edges. Rugelach were both dry and greasy. I'll keep sampling, but with moderate expectations. read more

I think the original owners sold the place, because everything Italian here sucks, from the cannoli to the cookies etc (things don't use the right ingredients, lack the right flavors, are stale, etc.) . The American stuff isn't terrible, but that itsn't great either.
