Our Church radiant heat boiler suddenly stopped working. I called Degree HVAC and within a few minutes they confirmed with me they were able to work on this old boiler . They schedule service at 8 am to 8:30am the following morning . And to my amazement, when I arrived at the church at 7:45 am, the Technician was waiting for me ! John the Technician was knowledgeable, friendly, and honest (a must for me when working with any contractors). He diagnosed the problem and fixed it within a hour. Cost was very reasonable compared to others who I researched the previous morning. Other than the semi-inconvenience of having to fill out their Commercial Service Rate Authorization Form, everything ran smoothly. He indicated that I should have been informed on the phone call I had with the receptionist (who gave me Rick's email address) that it would take a week to receive a response to any email I sent to Rick. So Rick was surprised that I was surprised at the "delay." I'm upping my rating to 3 because I am satisfied with their sincere and professional explanation regarding the reasons that caused my broken expectations. I have used this company since they were Redwood Mechanical. Within the past couple of years, they did an outstanding job replacing my water heater. The plumbing side of the business is 5 stars. I have come to learn there is an HVAC / service side to the operation that does not mirror the standards of their plumbing business. Setting aside the service business's questionable travel charge from the previous customer, they failed twice to detect and fix an obvious problem with my HVAC system. The first fail was when I had them perform a preventative maintenance in March and the second time was when the system started to fail in December and they found nothing wrong. It turns out the failing part was the interlock switch which cuts power when the door/covers are removed on the system. I explain below why it should have been found. The system failed again in Jan. Upon investigating myself, I discovered the interlock switch held down with electrical tape. When I removed the electrical tape, the switch fell apart. Springs popped out; plastic fell on the floor. It appears the interlock switch was taped not only to defeat the switch, but also because it was failing. Degree HVAC exclusively maintained my furnace and air conditioning systems, so it's reasonable to assume they taped it down on one of their previous visits. One objective of preventative maintenance is to identify failing parts before they interrupt service. The March preventative maintenance visit should have caught the failing switch. The December $200 service call should have caught this too. The replacement interlock switch cost $7.00 on Amazon.Com with next day delivery! They may have even had it in the truck. I would have asked it be replaced if I had known its was taped together, but I was not informed of its condition. I was not given the opportunity. Instead, it was saved for yet another $200+ service call. The reviews on Yelp are bipolar for Degree HVAC. It seems like the positive ones are for the plumbing business and the negatives are for the HVAC side of the house. I wrote the company to complain. I immediately heard back from my point of contact on the plumbing side of the house (nothing he could say, but at least an acknowledgement). Crickets from the service side of the company. It's a shame when a once great service provider breaks trust with a long term client. Time to move on. 3 star rating: 5 for the plumbing business / 1 for the HVAC service business. 3 is the average. read more

Degree HVAC came out in July to plan a replacement of my 30 yr old furnace that had been failing frequently. They recommended a two stage Carrier 58TP1 and to replace the return ducts under the house. I thought it would take two days, but they were here at 8am and finished by 3:30pm. There were three working and another who hauled away the old furnace and return ducts and brought additional parts parts as needed. They were very well organized, professional, and worked competently as a team. The installation went quickly and they did a lot of sealing that was not done with the old furnace. Also the return ducting was attached to the joists whereas the old ducts were on the ground, the fellow who did this work was under the house for many hours. The old return ducting had some leakage, and a buildup of dust as a result, so that has been taken care of now. The filter box makes changing filters trivial whereas the old one was difficult. After installing the furnace and ducting, they tested each of the registers to make sure it was working properly. They suggested that I keep my current smart thermostat since I already knew how that worked and they reprogrammed it as necessary. They cleaned up as necessary before departing. I was there for the entire installation and was impressed with the work done and the attention to detail. I'm looking forward to a winter w/o a failing furnace. read more

With my luck my ac broke during the nice heat wave right before 4th of July weekend so I left a message for HVAC, but decided to call again since I was a bit impatient and received a missed call (wasn't them after all - oops) and spoke to Jeff. He was very personable and although they were $150 ($30 more) versus Grant Mechanical $120 to diagnose the issue, I felt comfortable with them. Jeff made an appointment right away for the next day and said the specialist will arrive between 2-4. The next day, Dylan Zugar arrived at 2pm sharp. He was very professional and put on his booties to cover his shoes when walking in my house. He explained the issue and resolved it within an hour. (He also set up my fan downstairs since it wasn't set up yet.) Overall, great service and I'll be coming back here if I have anymore ac/heater issues (hopefully not too soon though). read more

Warning: bills ridiculous long hrs of travel time and has poor follow up contact. Our AC stopped working this hot summer. I chose them since my AC is under warranty, and HVAC is one of the listed company. (Warranty covers for parts and labor is on me) Appointment was scheduled quickly when I contacted them (Raquel). I was told that the minimum work I need to pay is 1 hr regardless. They charge $160 per hour. I was fine with it. Raquel promised me that I will see the invoice that day right after the service before they charge my credit card. Which did mot happen. The technician worked for 30 min only which I expect to pay $160. Not until well after 1 month I was told that they billed me for 1.75hrs. ($ 280) Raquel explained it was travel time in addition to labor. I live in Palo Alto! Travel from their Redwood city location to my place takes about 20 min top! The initial visit was only for inspection. Technician found that our motor fan is broken. They said that they have to order parts for me before work can continue. After a few days I heard nothing from them. I called and this time it was Jennifer. She said oh yeah the paper is on her desk. And I have to sign a proposal agreeing to pay their service before she can even order parts. She told me work requires about 3 hrs and that would be $480. I signed the proposal that outlined all the work (it included nothing about travel time in the outlined proposal). Jennifer said she will call me once parts arrives. After 3 weeks no one contacted me until I called. Parts were actually ready, she just forgot to call me. Technician came and labor time was 50 min. I expect to pay 1 hr but again they still billed me 3 hrs. Why? Again travel time from Redwood city to Palo Alto. Raquel explained that they have to pick up new and return old motor fan in order to get warranty. Really? 2 hrs?! I have signed many proposal/estimates in my life time. My understanding is that an estimate is an estimate, it can change depending on what happens in the process. Either more or less. I am expected to pay whatever the work is rendered. If you want to bill me per hour, you should work at least for the time you bill me. Otherwise don't say it's per hour. Seriously I don't care if u stay in my house for extra 2 hrs doing nothing ( I don't know what you are doing anyway) But if u bill me 3 hrs of labor time u better do 3 hrs of work. Otherwise please just say this job costs me $480 regardless. I can accept that! Its a principle issue! I guess I should just be happy that my AC is fixed and they did not bill me 5 or even 10 hrs. Terrible experience. The technician showed up and was trying to replace a year-old AC unit, which has rarely been used. I felt he was trying to abuse the situation. He was not helpful. He said it would take about 6 hrs. to check the lines. He didn't even check the lines visually! He said he had no information about the error code the unit was showing when I actually made sure the company got the picture of the error code, so they would be prepared on how to tackle the problem. They charged me for travel time. The technician was here 25 minutes altogether, and they charged me for the full hour for nothing. It felt like a total scam. read more

I'm surprised to see such bi-polar reviews for Degree HVAC. I have had them out several times to work on a boiler, fallen ducts, and a tankless hot water heater. They also do plumbing, and today Tommy fixed a leaky bathtub faucet, replaced a laundry room faucet, and replaced an instant hot water dispenser. All three tasks in 2 hours at $160 per hour. An apprentice was along for no charge. I thought Degree did a great job, and they are my go to company. I was really thankful I tried their plumbing capabilities out today. They also answer all my questions. I hope your experience is as good as mine have been. I also like that they can send me all my invoices as PDFs. read more

From the time I called for an appointment until a couple of weeks after the installation, the people were on top of it. Service to me is number 1. The estimators-get back to you, keep their word, follow up. The team of installers, troubleshooters, balancers are neat, ON TIME, respectful, knowledgeable and good humor. Price? I called Degree based on their reviews to diagnose an issue with my office's rooftop HVAC unit, and in general I thought they were average When I had called their office, I generally described the issue and Degree scheduled a technician to visit the following day (very cool). Since they gave me a 4-hour window for when the tech would arrive, I asked that they give me a head's-up before arriving by calling my cell phone. The tech arrived without calling first. It's not a big deal since my colleague was there to greet him. When I had arrived to the office a few minutes later, the tech was using the restroom... and left a very lingering #2. When you gotta go, you gotta go, but that's not the most professional way to greet clients. The tech spent about 10-15 minutes on the roof and then explained the problem. He was pleasant, knowledgable and competent. However, when I asked how much it would cost to fix it, he had no clue. He also had no idea what the part would cost. He just told me that someone at the office would review his report and get back to me with the cost. Then he asked for $175 for the visit. No one had told me what the visit would cost. I could have/should have asked, but 5-star customer service means you do not leave pertinent info out of a service call. I asked for an invoice or receipt and he said that the office will issue one. The office called the next day and left a message that the part and labor would cost over half the price of my unit. I have also yet to receive an invoice or receipt. These are not big deals in and of themselves. However, when thrown all together, Degree needs to take a look at their logistics and overall work flow. From a customer point of view, I do not want a technician visit (who also leaves a pungent odor upon meeting him), then a diagnosis, no estimate, no timeframe within which it can be resolved, and then a surprise visit fee, and no invoice or receipt. Very bad experience. Degree technician came to my house for the furnace repair. They charged $200/hr for diagnosis. After diagnosing the issue in one hour and charged me $200 for the visit, I received a quote over a week later for $1770. While waiting for Degree's quote, I called another heating and plumbing company (A&A plumbing) because I was unsuccessful to get any commitment from Degree for when I will receive the quote or when they would schedule the technician to fix the issue. The new heating & Plumbing company came to my house the next day, diagnosed the issue, brought parts a day later, fixed the furnace and charged me $595. In a nutshell, Degree would have cost me almost $2000 ($1970 to be exact), a week for receiving a quote and unknown period for scheduling a technician vs. $595 (for the same diagnosis) by the other company and furnace fix in 2 days! I also contacted Degree after receiving the quote to ask why such a large difference in pricing for the same diagnosis but Degree never replied to me. This company is a total scam. read more

FURNACE: We had our 20 yr old furnace replaced with a 95% efficiency Carrier, plus adding some duct work to better serve living space in the bsmt. We are delighted with Degree's work. Rick came the morning I called to see the job, gave us a ballpark price and a detailed bid (for the custom duct work) 2 days later. He quickly understood what we wanted with the new ducts, and suggested options we hadn't considered. We had another company replace the furnace gas valve last August and got a bid from them at that time. We got a better price with Degree and Rick showed a keener awareness of what we needed. JC and Miguel came to install the furnace two days after I called the office to say yes. They removed the old and installed the new in one day. Miguel came back the next day to finish up the duct work. I work at home and so was around to see the installation. It was first class all the way. We are especially pleased with the new ducts, more compact and less intrusive in the basement living area, with registers where we need them. Chrissy at the office sent us a rebate package, including Federal tax credit, PG&E, and (surprise) a Sheet Metal Workers rebate -- Miguel's union offers rebates thru 12/10. Together over $1800 back. I'm not sure how I would ever characterize having my furnace replaced as a five-star experience. So I am giving Degree HVAC four stars. As luck would have it my furnace finally started to give just in time for the holiday season. I called Degree (based on the great reviews) and the sent out Marc within a few hours. He took a look and gave me two options - replace the gas valve, which was shot, or get a new furnace. Since the old one was not very efficient and was as loud as a thundering herd, I went with option two (new furnace). The whole experience was very nice - originally the team was scheduled to do the job on Christmas eve, but Trini called me and told me they were available a day early (nice!). Rick showed up prompty at 8am on the schedule day and introduced Miguel and the crew. They did a fantastic job and were done within three hours. They walked me through the new system, showed me how to program my new thermostat and voila - a new furnace, a quiter living room, a warm house, and a slightly lighter wallet, just in time for the new year. Overall these guys were great. Professional, clean, courteous, timely. Next time you need some work done on your HVAC system, call Degree. read more

Our heater started intermittently shutting down, so I went onto Yelp to find a good hvac repair shop. We had someone else come over the summer who I was not impressed with. They got right back to us to schedule an appointment for the next day, and the repairman was on time. Unfortunately he was not able to replicate the problem while he was here, but I spoke to Trini (one of the owners) and he told me what to do in the event it happened again. When it shut down again, I took a video of the error light, and this time Trini came out the same day and found and fixed the problem. A while after having our furnace installed by Degree, it started giving a little trouble-- it would cycle off and on several times while warming up the house in the morning. I emailed them over the weekend, and first thing Monday morning, I got a call setting up an appointment to take a look. Thankfully, the furnace obliged in demonstrating the problem for the technician who came out. It turned out to be a simple problem of restricted airflow from our having used a carbon filter along with the regular pleated filter. The technician installed a new filter, stayed to make sure everything was OK, and went on his way-- no charge! This is the kind of service one rarely experiences anymore. They could have nickled & dimed us since it wasn't strictly a warranty issue, but chose not to and put a smile on my face instead. These guys are great-- use them! read more

These guys were great! Back in November our heater stopped working. I called several local (to Campbell) furnace service and repair companies but that was a minor disaster. I called 3 different local places and only one returned my call... only to say he was too busy to fix our heater and they didn't really do much repair. Sooooo I found Degree HVAC via Yelp. They're in San Carlos, so I wasn't sure if they'd come all the way out to Campbell, but they did! Degree HVAC was very professional. They called me back within a couple of hours; I was able to schedule an appointment within 2 days (I had been without heat for about 10 days, at that point); and they were on-time. I can't remember the technician who came out (says Trini on the bill) but he was awesome. He fixed our heater (which turned out to be a wiring problem) and inspected the heater, took air samples for carbon monoxide and replaced our filter. We had to pay a flat fee for the visit and I felt that, even though the fix was fairly simple, the technician spent some additional time looking at everything and made sure there were no additional problems with the heater. He was very friendly and helpful and didn't try to sell/upsell us on anything. I wouldn't hesitate to use these guys again! read more

After an inspection found a cracked heat exchange, we decided to get a new furnace. Based on reviews I called Degree as an option. Response was very good, and pricing was comparable to other vendors. The furnace was installed withing a couple of days. Once installed, there was a problem with some of the configurations that required 3 post installation visits. Each was done with a high degree of customer service and professionalism (including a call on Sunday.) Would definitely do business again with Degree. Very pleased. read more

Our A/C stopped working after a recent power outage. I called 4-5 places and decided on Degree HVAC. Although the hourly charge was $150 ($30 more than another estimate), I decided to go with Degree HVAC based on Yelp reviews as well as the person answering my call -- believe his name was Jeff. Other places seemed cautious/concerned about working on a residential unit, or did not have the time (e.g. until the weekend). The technician was scheduled to arrive between 8am-10am; and Steve (the technician) arrived promptly at 8am. He was courteous (e.g. putting on shoe covers without prompting) and knowledgeable. He allowed me to watch his troubleshooting efforts which determined a defective/pitted contactor. After getting a new part from his truck, he efficiently removed/replaced the contactor. He tested out his work and cleaned up the work area. In my gut, I think the cost of the part was high for a pretty simple looking part (e.g. $180); however, I felt comfortable with Steve doing the work and did not want to waste any more of my personal time. I am giving Degree HVAC 4 stars, as opposed to 5 stars, since I think the cost was high; and I did not like the hidden/automatic travel charge of $25 which was added to my invoice. I inquired about this charge with technician; and chose not to fuss more about it. I think that I should have been advised of the travel charge during my initial call. Note: It is unclear whether the less expensive place also has this type of charge; regardless, it is worth asking during your initial inquiry for any service provider. I recommend Degree HVAC if you want a professional outfit that fixes your A/C problem; however, Degree HVAC may not be the lowest cost option. As I mentioned, I think the technician was superb. read more
