Just finished a gas furnace replacement with new central AC. Grant Mechanical was quick to respond and provide an estimate. They did have a backlog before getting to my job but since mine wasn't an emergency it was fine. Sam called a few days before our scheduled installation and everything went according to plan. They like to start early, so for my job they were onsite at 7:00 am. They estimated taking two days for the job but got it done in one. I dealt directly with Sam (the owner) always, and he is very responsive. Communication was good so I had a high degree of trust and confidence in the crew and they delivered. We had a failed HVAC system that was caused by poor design by a previous contractor. Sam redesigned the system and it has been working well for several years now with a couple of exceptions. The HVAC unit in our attic has a condensation drain line with a short vent pipe. The drain pipe somehow got blocked under the house and backed up the water resulting in water overflowing through to vent pipe into the ceiling of the bedroom below. We asked Sam to do a service call and he told us he was too busy. So we had to hire someone else. We have a 3 zone system and one of the zones appears to have a sticking damper. Because Sam is who installed this system and his sticker says for service to call him we tried once again to get Sam to help. He never even responded. Nice guy, but too busy to follow up when you have a problem with his installations. read more

I was having an A/C problem of the air not blowing much and not cool after a few hours of use, especially when the weather was the hottest this summer. -had Associated Heating of SF (Bryan) come out, he thought the Nest thermostat wiring might be the source and charged me $160. This did not solve the problem. -I called a different HVAC guy who will go unnamed, he wasn't very eager to come out and tried to talk me through a few steps, this didn't work so we set up an appointment- then he no-showed! I called him the next day and he was clueless about it, so forget using him. -several neighbors had used Sam Grant so I called him and we set up an apt for earlier this month, he arrived 30 mins early. On the phone he clearly informed me that it would cost at least $210 for the visit, which was OK with me if he could solve my issue. -he diagnosed that it prob needed a new capacitor and replaced it, total cost; $310 -this seems to have solved the problem, my a/c blows cool whenever I want and for how long I want. -I couldn't solve this on my own despite watching a lot of YouTube videos and Googling multiple sites. Hottest day of the year and the air conditioner is on the fritz. Coincidence? Actually not, but more on that in a minute. I've used Sam before several years ago, his response to service calls is simply amazing. I texted him in the morning and in the early afternoon he called back asking what the problem was. I told him that the air coming out was not cold and I was concerned it had a freon leak like I saw with my refrigerator. He came over same day for a service call (note he's busy, I assume I was lucky here). He came over, and he called me when he was outside. He wearing a mask, and he noted that he already checked the refrigerant and everything was okay. Then he noted that my attic temperature was well above 100 degrees and that the duct work has heated up enough to heat the cooled air and reduce the efficiency. I kind of felt dumb for not recognizing that, it was a scorcher, but I note that he didn't make me feel dumb about it and I'm certain it never crossed his mind to add refrigerant that wasn't needed or other charges...he does business with integrity. So someday I will need a serious service call for my HVAC needs, and when it happens I'll be calling Sam again. read more

We just had A/C installed by Grant Mechanical and are very pleased with the whole process. Sam (the owner) initially came out and went over all of the options. He said we can use our existing furnace because it had at least 5 years of life left while other contractors said we needed to replace our furnace. This saved us a good amount of money. Sam also provided the option for a slimmer A/C unit that would fit in a better area. The other contractors said we could not fit an A/C compressor in that location and instead proposed a unit with a larger footprint where we would have had to move one of our fruit trees in the backyard. Also, Sam said we could continue to use our existing thermostat while other contractors said we would need to replace it with a new one. Sam turned around the bid quickly as he promised. The other contractors took at least a week and came in at a much higher cost for just the A/C compressor and installation (ignoring the furnace replacement they said we needed). Sam was flexible and worked within our schedule. His crew was very friendly and completed the bulk of the install the first day. The second day was simply to do the wiring to the thermostat (delayed to 2nd day so they could be in the attic in the morning when it wasn't hot). HVAC heater was blowing cold air, and Sam quickly replaced a faulty ignitor. That was in December, and then last week we were getting cold air again. Called Sam on a Friday and he was able to come our first thing Monday morning, and discovered the ignitor had broken again. Sam honored the warranty of the part and his work and replaced it again with no charge. As with the first appointment, I appreciate the clear communication, having my call returned in a timely manner, working with an experienced technician, and showing up on time for his appointments. Sam came to my home and said he had 11 other bids to make that day. Needlesstosay he rushed through my home in ten minutes and I felt he was going too fast and we didn't have a chance to talk everything through. I started to explain my concerns and he said "I've got this", so he cut me off from asking questions or describing anything. He submitted a bid but I said I wanted a high efficiency furnace, he was angry he had to re-do the bid. I said I didn't have a chance to tell him I was planning on adding on so I wanted a furnace that would be able to handle more square footage and not have to by another furnace and the other bids I got were all bigger furnaces. I said I was willing to go with him, but I wanted a different size. That was unacceptable to him. He will not stay along enough to discuss then gets angry when you feel it needs to be discussed a bit more and planned out. He said all other bids were wrong, and apparently everyone else is stupid but him. He wanted me to patch the sheetrock and pay before it passed inspection. He gets mad if you ask questions, like if you have any questions about this major project on your own home it is somehow questioning his competency. He is super defensive, and I have no idea why, but his personality killed the deal for me. He calls and says he will start Monday and then I say we need a different size he cancels the whole thing. Whatever dude. Instead of taking time to explain things he just quits and gets mad. Very unprofessional and flat out rude. they were important questions. He just said "I've been doing this for years", but never explained how this would work, never explained how long the ducts would be to get the the back if I made an addition, or if they would have enough air force, or if it would pass inspection. He just took it personally and thought I was questioning his competency. I don't know, the man, this was not personal. I just needed real answers and he got mad I wanted to feel all was OK. read more

Our furnace just stopped working yesterday. We had used Grant Mechanical a couple times in the past, and I had been VERY happy with the experience. I called Grant late in the afternoon and reached Sam. He told me that he thought he knew what the problem was and would bring all of the parts he might need for our furnace. Sure enough, it needed 2 parts (including a motor), and he had everything with him. He explained what the problems were to my husband at the beginning of his visit. When I came home, he made sure to show me what work he had done and demonstrate that it was working well (even though he had already tested it himself.). Our air conditioner was not functioning. I call Grant Mechanical, Inc and left a voice mail. About an hour later San Grant returned our call and arranged to come over and check out the 22 year old system later that day. He replaced a capacitor and had the system producing cold air in less than an hour. He found that we also needed the drain pump replaced and that the drain line was plugged. He was back within two days (on a Saturday) with the needed replacement pump and has restored our system to a full operation. Sam is great to work with and takes the time to discuss the issues, answer questions and offer solutions. I contacted these folks based on YELP reviews. Yelp has never failed me until now. I contacted this company to set-up an appt with Sam and he never showed for our scheduled appt. I called him 40 mins after our scheduled appt & he said it wasn't on the books. He later recalled our conversation over the phone & apologized for the mistake. He was able to squeeze me in the afternoon of that day and after 20min of looking at my AC system, I was charged $120 just for the estimate. I was shocked that they charged for a quick visit & appalled that he never mentioned that there would be a fee, which I paid. I asked if I should have the furnace serviced every year and he said that every other is fine. Also, our furnace is old as the hills, but he didn't try to talk us into replacing it. He said we are on borrowed time and that we could replace it, or we could just use it until it dies - which we opted to do. My furnace went out on my unexpectedly on Sunday. Monday morning I was in a panic to find someone who could come out and fix it and the temps have been so cold in the evening and mornings. I left a message at Grant Mechanical, and meanwhile called (literally) 10 other places. Everyone was booked until the following except for 2 which told me they could take me the next day. We just had Grant Mechanical do a complete replacement of our 60(!) year old heating system (new furnace, ducts and adding heat to an addition) in the house we recently bought and they were great. He also did not try to upsell us on things we didn't need like many other companies I talked to and gave us different option so we could figure out what was best for us to do. A month ago Sam Grant came by to fix our heater because it wouldn't turn on. I'm not very good with these sorts of things. Anything with fire and gas gives me pause. So I called an expert. I called him on a Wednesday. Same came on time on a Friday. Fixed the pilot which just needed some jiggling. Taught me how to change the filter, how to light the pilot, how to get things going again. He was cool with me video recording the whole session so I would know how to do what he taught me again. All good. I would totally call him again if I have heater problems. Woohoo! As good as it gets! Sam is our Christmas miracle. Our 50 year old furnace broke last night - I found him on yelp - he responded to my call same day, had a cancellation this morning in our area and was able to schedule us in. Besides the timing miracle--what could have been turned into a "you really need to replace this old clunker for $3,000" was just a thermostat replacement miracle. A down-to-earth guy, Sam told us like it was, gave us some history on the furnace, chatted about growing up in the area and he was really nice to my cocker spaniel, Birdie. He also doesn't mind if you watch him work and ask a bunch of questions at the same time ( a plus). When the clunker needs replacing we will be calling Sam.
