Finding a delicious BBQ spot is always a hit and miss for us but this place was a huge HIT !! We just so happened to stumble across this place when looking for a yummy spot to eat while on vacation.. and man OH man am I so happy we found them! I had a takeout order for my family and it was amazing. We ordered the meatloaf, bbq chicken dinner, ribs, and tilapia. They we all so good. The chicken dinner was damn near a whole chicken and was so tender and had a great smokey flavor with a sauce that was on point. The meatloaf was tender with great flavor. The tilapia was fried with a great crunch and very tender inside. The ribs were tender and flavorful. The corn bread was as my daughter put it: "absolutely delectable". 100% will recommend to anyone looking for good comfort food. read more

My wife and I visited this establishment for a Mother's Day that included Soul Food with live music. Deja Blue opened 18 months ago by a local Daryl Choates that cares about the community. He has owned or owns successful businesses and he has a potential gold mine with great food and great music. The music is outstanding led by Music Director Leon Joyce, Jr. who played in the Ramsey Lewis trio. The singer on our visit was Yolandra Rhodes from the Oakland Bay. Area. He lacks his fingers while eating and then serves drinks to customers. Holy cross contamination. Food has been mid. Go for the music or fried foods. The pork chop ordered looked like they scraped the breading off of a fried pork chop and threw it on the griddle. Not Grilled as advertised. Not sure they know the difference. Saw a couple with a service dog basically got kicked out, which is ILLEGAL. When we were there, we were the only people in the restaurant, it was completely empty. The restaurant was doing major repair work right in the dining room while we ate, which was unprofessional to begin with. Outdoor patio was covered in construction materials and tools and couldn't be seated, so we sat inside and away from the work area. The poor couple came in, the owner immediately said county health dept does NOT allow service dog indoors and they had to sit in the patio. They checked out the patio, which didn't even have space to walk around due to construction materials. So they left. I wanted to say something but wasn't sure of the law so I didn't. After we left I looked up the Monterey County law, and service dogs are allowed: "The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed." This confirmed my suspicion the owner just didn't want the couple with the service dog inside and kicked them out by making illegal claim of the law. This is disgusting. We had so much fun at Deja Blue. The chef definitely knows how to cook and Daryl (the owner) is friendly and warm and very welcoming...high recommend! The place has a mural of blues greats painted on the exterior wall and posters of the previous performers decking out the walls inside. I decided to pop into this spot in Sand City today. I've been wanting to try it for a while. Nothing beats a great home cooked southern meal. After checking out the Sunday Soul Food menu I decided to go with the Catfish, Mac & Cheese, and Yams. In a word it was outstanding! The fish was fried to perfection, and not oily or greasy. The M&C was creamy cheesy goodness. And the Yams were an excellent choice as my second side. The gentleman who helped me was very accommodating and pleasant! Went to the drag brunch and paid $70 for VIP. There was NOTHING VIP about the experience. Bottomless mimosas only lasted one hour, from 11a-12p, and they didn't start until after 11a but stopped promptly at 12p. The owner was EXTREMELY RUDE, and we had to get up to get more mimosas but only one person was serving and he kept leaving to argue with the drag queens. Waste of money. We went a couple times before this review and everything was okay. A group of us went out for a drink and to check out this event they were having. So we go in a little early to grab a bite and a couple of drinks before the event. We sat in a booth proceeded to order drinks. The first time I came they were very light on the amount of alcohol that went into the drinks but I figured maybe they got better. Nope the drinks were watered down just like the first time. Sorry I can't justify paying $10-$15 for a drink that had a splash of alcohol. The older door lady we will call her Mama DB.. let's talk about her. When you pick a door person and staff, they are the first person any patrons see. That person sets the vibe, they are representation of your establishment and they should not be rude. they should be hospitable. Mama DB was EXTREMELY RUDE. Dear lord I got flash backs from the OG Ms. Owens from King Middle School. She talked to us like we were kids. As it got closer to 9, we were asked to leave because of the dress code. All black or nothing at all.... I've been to many private events were the dress code was enforced but that was in Vegas, but even in Vegas they are lenient. Let's be real, a local bar shouldn't turn away patrons or be rude and no one will ever adhere to a strict dress code. It's the 831. We aren't at PDIDDYS all white party in the Hampton's. They made it seem as if the Performer couldn't go on if we didn't have on all black he couldn't perform... Not everyone is gonna come in here dressed in all black to look like the waitstaff. The owner was asked to clarify the dress code and he was answering every question but that. The only person that was trying to clarify it was DJ NEATO.. Even then they wouldn't clarify it for him. While MAMA DB was hollering at us and we were like "but what about that party over there they aren't in all black he is in plaid" she said OH Daryl is about to kick him out too. WOW. "Rules are Rules" like Mama DB said.. Guess those rules were only meant for us. Cuz Plaid was still there. As we were walking away laughing about what just happened, there was 2 other ladies that pulled up in and Uber and were obviously tourists. Mama DB strikes again. It wasn't even one minute after their Uber left they were told to leave. I bet they won't recommend this place to their friends and friends friends.. Other than that the chicken wings were good, The waitresses Liz & Kayla were hospitable and nice, they provided us with good customer service. Sweetheart DJ Neato knows how to spin and brings good vibes. He's the best thing going for them on Friday nights. I was going to give them 1 star but I decided to add another for the positive things mentioned. We came here on a late Saturday afternoon when we happened to be in Seaside. We'll definitely be back! Everything was delicious. I had perfectly fried catfish, my sweetie had the succulent oxtails. Collards, yams, red beans, and cornbread were all outstanding as well. They have several good beers on tap (we had a Lagunitas IPA and an 805) . Service was friendly and fast. No live music this weekend - apparently they didn't want to compete with the jazz festival. Hope to catch it next time. They did have a couple of TVs with college football on. read more

Was only in the area for a few days and of course came in during the power outage times from the storms. Seaside was overrun due to surrounding areas having no lights on... and this place was a god send. Staff were awesome. Food was combo of comfort meal you need on a hard day and dig your elbows in kind of taste. If I lived in the area I'd be here at least once a week... especially on the music nights (which I wish I could've seen). Cocktail was spectacular, and I rarely drink whiskey either. The band was great! The 3 stars are for the food. The selection was very very limited which was such a disappointment. I really wanted the Ox Tails with rice ad gravy. They had much of the main dishes crossed out on the menu. They were only serving chicken wings and fried tilapia with a few sides. Drinks were good. The collard greens and yams were really good. When we were asked if we were ready to order we were told as each of us ordered a different item off the menu it was either all gone or only severed in the morning which is understandable but would've been nice to know ahead of time and the waitress mentioned that this happens frequently. What we did settle for however, no one was satisfied or happy with what $25 got us here. We did however like the music, the waitress was very nice, and the potentially good atmosphere, that we unfortunately didn't get to experience. This review for for take out food only. We did not stay, although the establishment looked clean and had a cool vibe to it. I would definitely come back for the live shows in the future. We ordered the braised oxtails over steamed rice, collared greens, and mix of corn, tomato, and okra. It was very tasty and flavorful. The meat was tender. We also got the chicken wings which has the same breading as fried catfish. We also got the rib eye steak (Med rare) which was also cooked pretty well. We imagined it to be a thin piece of steak but it was actually a pretty good thick size. It came with a gigantic baked potato and side of asparagus. The items were pricey but all food prices has been going up so it was expected. The server was attentive and super friendly. The entire staff checked in on us while we waited for our take out food. Everyone has a smile on their face. You can feel that everyone liked their job. That's rare these days. We were pretty happy with the service and food. read more

One star is generous & undeserving. Where do I start? SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! I purchased a $65 VIP ticket to an event at this venue. The ticket I paid for promised brunch, unlimited mimosas from 1-3pm and a show from 1pm to 3pm. I want to make sure to point out that this review has no reflection of the event planner or the amazingly talented performers. We were seated after 1pm, the mimosas were poured and ready at the bar but off limits! We were finally "allowed" to go to the bar and get our drinks after 1:20pm. Once approaching the bar the owner/bartender started yelling "one per person ladies, one per person!" Aggressively and loud. This was his first action of intimidation we witnessed. The show started and our drinks were quickly finished. We were seated with our backs to the bar and we asked the owner/bartender if he could pass us new drinks. He laughed at us and said we have to get up and go to the bar, literally feet away and he continued to wash glasses. Then he told us we can't get up during the show! Another form of intimidation. I asked the owner/bartender if he expected gratuity without serving us. He then laughed again at me and said "ya, I will take a $100 tip!" and he told me he isn't working today. This was another form of intimidation. He was propositioning me for a $100 tip! Some of us got fed up on his mimosas poured 2/3 juice and 1/3 sparkling wine that we couldn't even get so we bought cocktails. The show finished just after 2pm and the owner/bartender decided he wasn't pouring anymore mimosas as well, although our ticket stated unlimited mimosas until 3pm. Our large group of 15 we brought got up and hit the dance floor as the DJ was spinning music for everyone now to dance. We looked over at our table and the owner/bartender had taken ALL of our drinks off of our table and they were now in a group of dirty glasses on the bar! I approached him and asked what he was doing, this is where the intimidation got severe! The owner/bartender started yelling in my face that he had to clear for the next party! I explained we paid for those drinks, he offered to re make them and then instead of going behind the bar and making said drinks HE TOOK THE TABLE CLOTHS OFF THE TABLE! We still had people seated at the table and the event was not over yet! At this point we were done! We ALL left the dance floor, grabbed our purses and belongings and promptly left. NEVER have I ever seen an owner behave so poorly. This place is a scam. I feel horrible for the performers who had to deal with this ill behaved grown adult. This owner made me feel unsafe. I was also intimidated to make this review for fear of retaliation, however I will not live in fear. He cannot change who I am, but he can change where I chose to spend my $ and time! DO NOT EAT, DRINK, VISIT, OR LISTEN TO MUSIC AT THIS VENUE. We vote for local businesses with our pocket books. See something, say something! read more
