Haven't been here in a while. Ordered the brisket plate for lunch. Our server said the brisket should be excellent, as it was just smoking for 16 hours. 5 pieces of brisket. Or should I say, biscuits? I have never had worse brisket in my life. Like eating sawdust. Nasty.
I have been wanting to try Jackie's Place for a while now. I love me some good soul food. We happen to be in the area so we finally decided to check them out. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon for lunch recently. The restaurant is located in downtown San Jose off north 1st street. Parking is accessible in the back parking lot. The spaces can be tight but there is additional parking on 2nd street as well. The restaurant is fairly large with plenty of tables and high tops. A full service bar is located to the right as soon as you walk in. The restaurant is clean and has nice modern decor. The vibe is welcoming and bustling. We ordered uncle Greg's smoked ribs with cornbread, candied yams, and rice, beef brisket with cornbread, coleslaw, and mac & cheese, watermelon lemonade, lemonade, and a glass of Chardonnay. Everything was delicious and hearty. Both the ribs and beef brisket were tender and juicy. All the sides complemented the bbq meats very well. The candied yams were sweet and tasty. Mac & cheese were creamy and gooey. The cornbread was tasty and moist in the inside. Both lemonade drinks were refreshing and hit the spot. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Jackie's Place. The staff were so nice and attentive. I appreciated the cozy and family friendly atmosphere. Price point was fair. I definitely want to come back to try the happy hour and of course other items on the menu.
I was craving BBQ ribs and Jackie's place popped up on my yelp search so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is "self serve" style. Meaning you place your order and pay through their QR code menu. Even though it was self-serve, the staff was friendly and they came to check in on our table a couple of times to refill our drinks. The food was fantastic! As soon as you park you can smell the smoker going and it makes your mouth water. I ordered the ribs with a side of beef and beans and Mac and cheese. The cornbread comes with the platter. Ribs were St. Louis style with the bits of cartilage at the end that I really love to chew on. Meat was delicious and fall off the bone. Bbq sauce is ok the sweet side by balances well with a few drops of hot sauce. Portions are very health. The beans were delicious and almost reminded me of chili. Mac and cheese was on point. Overall I highly recommend checking them out. Whether you are in the area or just looking for a great bbq joint in the bay, Jackie's place won't disappoint. For the vegetarians, try their jackfruit "pulled pork" bowl! Also their desserts selection is amazing. Will have to come back to try their peach cobbler and lemon pie!
Finally came to the new downtown spot. As always, staff very friendly and welcoming. Food is off the chain!!! Fresh food, made to order. Love this place! Can't leave without a banana pudding!!
I wanted to like this place so bad, especially with the abundance of 4 and 5-star reviews. But I think that was part of the problem. I went in with really high expectations. To me, the food ended up being just okay. It definitely wasn't bad, but a lot of it was dry and pretty average when it came to seasoning and flavor. Now, you might be thinking, "What do I know about good BBQ?". To be fair, I'm not claiming to be a BBQ expert. But I do know I've had BBQ at other well-known spots around the Bay Area and even in Texas that was much more flavorful, juicy, and moist. FOOD: 7/10 A lot of us ordered brisket-based dishes, and unfortunately, the brisket was pretty dry. Even after dipping it in their BBQ sauce, it was still dry, the sauce mainly just added flavor. For my sides, I got the potato salad and coleslaw. The potato salad was good! The coleslaw, however, was pretty mid. It mostly tasted like plain cabbage and could've used a bit more flavor. The cornbread had a nice, slightly toasted exterior, but the inside was very dry and crumbly, making each bite fall apart. I was especially excited to try the banana pudding because I'd been craving it for the longest time, and thankfully, it didn't disappoint. It had that classic creamy pudding texture, the vanilla wafers were perfectly soft, the whipped cream was smooth, and overall I really enjoyed it. SERVICE: 9/10 Ordering is done through a QR code on your phone, and the staff brings everything out to you. We had barely submitted our order when our drinks and dessert arrived, and our entrées followed shortly after. Everything came out surprisingly fast. We also had the chance to meet Juju, who is Jackie's cousin (Jackie is the owner and chef). If you look at the menu, there's actually a section featuring Juju's specialty teas and juices. She was honestly the sweetest and funniest person. I absolutely adored her! She was so fun to chat with and shared that a lot of well-known Bay Area names have stopped by Jackie's, including LaRussell, E-40, and members of the 49ers. It was such a nice interaction and definitely one of the highlights of our visit. AMBIANCE: 7/10 The restaurant is simple and spacious with plenty of different seating options. If you're looking to grab a drink, they also have a bar area. The restrooms are downstairs. The sink and toilet were kind of going through it but they got the job done. There's parking available both upstairs and downstairs. Just be careful because the parking spaces are pretty tight and narrow. Overall, I can definitely see why people enjoy this place, but for me, the BBQ just didn't live up to the hype. I'm glad I got to try it for myself. It was definitely a situation where you need to try it for yourself despite the reviews.

For this visit, the ribs were not available as they sold out so what a BUMMER. Our food for both the take out and dine (on separate occasions) were as follows: * Smoked beef brisket * Fried Chicken wings * Hot links * Key lime pie * Uncle Greg's ribs - so good and I was a bit frustrated when it wasn't available during our dine in experience * Smoked BBQ Chicken * The Juju * Banana Pudding * Butter Pound Cake * Chicken & Waffles * Honey Butter Cornbread - never miss to order this because OMG this is really really good My thoughts: * The Best Bites: Uncle Greg's Ribs and Fried Chicken Wings * Don't Miss: the honey butter cornbread * The Vibe: chill and casual, spacious and family friendly * Patience required especially on weekends. I had jury duty for 3 days at SJ Superior Court and had to find lunch places during my time on the jury. Luckily, Jackie's Place is within walking distance from the courthouse. I like a good BBQ and this was very very good. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with coleslaw as my side. The meat was very flavorful and VERY tender, which was great, because I was eating standing up due to reasons that aren't necessary to explain. But it was easy to take bits off the meat without having to put the entire piece into my mouth - you can see it's cooked well, but still so tender. And tasty! The bun and coleslaw were also good - big portion of coleslaw! But the star of the show was the beef. $19 for the sandwich + coleslaw, which I thought was fair given the quality. I ordered at the counter as take-out, and it took while (15 min?), but it was worth it. The person who took my order was friendly and cheery and the place looked clean and like it would be a fun place to eat had I had the time to do so. So would love to come back many times and try a lot of things on the menu.
The vibe is chill with a great play list. Every one in there was kind professional and friendly. But the real star is the food. Absolutely amazing. I am not from the Bay but I will be back.
1st time here and the food was great. A family owned gem , hidden downtown that offers great bbq and atmosphere. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming! Brisket was tender and had a good smoke ring ;paired great with the bbq sauce. Fried chicken was amazing with hot sauce.(it was super crispy and was freshly cooked ; nice and hot !) Fish n chips were seasoned well and just fell apart when you bit into it. So good! The sides were all delicious....cornbread hit the spot. Going to have a drink at their bar seating area next time they had a great selection. They made us feel like family here! Great for hosting events too ( large party seating available)
Ordered the hot link plate with a side of fries, mac and cheese, corn bread, and mustard. It was all very good, no complaints. Its even better when reheated in the air fryer, especially the corn bread. Partner got the brisket nachos. Again, very good. Great texture and mix of flavors. Their green sauce tasted fresh. We went during Fanime weekend so the wait time was very long (20+ minutes), but im not holding that against them.
This is my second time visiting. We gave our name to wait to be seated. We told the lady in the front we'd be at the bar. However, we did not hear our name to be called to be seated and no effort was made to go to the bar where we told her we'd be. When it was mentioned, the lady at the front was very rude. Food came out on time, however, the red beans and rice had a gumbo taste and green beans were spicy and unable to eat. The servers were really nice and exchanged for a different side. My cousin placed an order for sparkling water that did not come out, later to find out they were out of the item. My first experience was much better and I don't know if I will return.
We had jackie's place for takeout this time around with friends who live in the area. I decided to try the fried fish while everyone else got pulled pork and brisket. I made the bad decision of getting the fish as it was too thin and more batter than fish. The brisket and pulled pork were amazing and so tender! The candied yams, mac n cheese, beans and beef, etc etc were all so well made! This is the only place in the bay to get amazing bbq without the long line!

I came here around 8pm for some dinner and Jackie's did not disappoint! I ordered the corn ribs and the fried chicken plate with mac n cheese, fries and cornbread. I demolished the corn ribs so fast, they were perfectly seasoned and came with a Jalapeño dipping sauce. I'm never one to use dipping sauces, but the sauce was delicious! It was a perfect serving too, I think it was two whole corn's worth of corn ribs. Then came my plate: the mac n cheese was cheesy but not overly cheesy, the cornbread was sweet and baked to perfection, the FRIES!! So soft AND crunchy, and of course the chicken legs were battered and fried deliciously. Thank you to the wonderful staff who regularly came to check in on us and make us feel super welcomed. OK so first let me start by saying that as I pulled into the parking lot and got out of the car I was so ecstatic to try this food. It smelt so good and reminds you I was super hungry. One of the things that rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that you had to pay before you got your food. There are QR code sitting on the table with the menus attached and that is where you pay. If you would like water, you can go get it yourself. If you want to go containers, you can go get it. Yourself and silverware is prepackaged on the table. Bathroom down a flight upstairs into a basement. Customer service was nice. Now let's get down to the nitty and greedy this food... For someone that was extremely hungry I was not a fan at all whatsoever of this food! This food made my stomach hurt and I barely ate any of it. Once I broke this chicken apart I determined that I looked a little odd however looks can be deceiving. Therefore, I proceeded to taste a little small piece and from there I realized that my chicken taste like chicken. If you know, you know what I'm talking about. The gentleman that came about to help me out suggested making me a new plate and bring it out out. I respectfully decline as I have a very sensitive stomach and I did not want to risk getting ill. Will I be back? no. The watermelon lemonade taste like Crystal lite packaging with tons of water. I will say that there are a lot of parking slots in the lot. read more
We came in around 6 PM on a Sunday, they close at 7 PM and they were still pretty busy. Juju was greeting customers and she was very friendly. We were sat quickly. You order on your phone and pay before the food comes. They were out of quite a few things, probably because they are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Anyway, I ordered the following: -corn ribs, very tasty and seasoned well. I ordered set it off sauce with this and they gave me ranch instead, so I had to go ask for it -jackfruit sandwich, a generous amount of jackfruit, but the bun was very burned and left a charred flavor in my mouth. They also said they don't have pickles, which I thought was odd for a BBQ place. -my partner ordered brisket and rib tips, he enjoyed it. I don't love the ordering process because if you need something you have to get up and find someone. So I guess it's more like fast food. However, there are plenty of people around to help and they are friendly. Clean inside and they have a self-serve water station. Lots of seating inside, vegetarian options, and a patio! read more

Stopped by to pick up a meal. I had order this from To good to Go. I got a nice sample of some of the different meats. Tender and smoky brisket and a couple of hot links.it also included a corn bread muffin. The sides were mac and cheese,and sweet yams. Both tasted great. It was very well organized. They also threw in free sweet tea. There was enough brisket to make a nice fat sandwich for lunch read more
Wow, I haven't had takeout this good in a while! My daughter and SIL decide to treat us for dinner one Saturday night and decided on trying out Jackie's Place. A popular San Jose spot that's been in my Yelp go-to list for a minute now, as Jackie's Place is known for authentic soul food and Texas-style BBQ. Our food was: * Fried Chicken Wings. The best breaded DF wings I've had in SJ * Smoked Beef Brisket. Dry but tastes best w/ JP's Orig BBQ sauce * Uncle Greg's Ribs. Savory & probably the best reason to come here * Smoke BBQ Wings. Didn't get to taste as my SIL devoured it * Hot Links. Just the right delicious heat from a sausage * Honey Butter Cornbread. OMG! Said this cornbread hating fella * Butter Pound Cake. Looks unappealing but oddly moist and tasty * Banana Pudding. Smooth serving of creamy dessert * Key Lime Pie. Dominated by sweetness, but balanced w/ the lime . The Juju (cherry and grape Kool-Aid). Tasted like medicine :) We kept raving about it the food while eating and after eating. Even the next day, we were still talking about the ribs and cornbread. FYI. There were a lot of leftovers as we ordered a bunch and JP's has generous portions. The food was deeply flavorful, hearty & high-quality. DO NOT forget the sauces. Surely coming back for a dine-in meal to try out the cocktails, the sides and the other items ie the Smothered Chicken and Mac & Cheese. I was excited to try this place and had high expectations going in. The setup is a bit different--you're seated and then order using a QR code at the table. I did have a few questions but wasn't able to find any wait staff to assist. I ordered the rib plate. While it was good, I was expecting a bolder flavor overall. The collard greens were nicely seasoned with a bit of spice, though there was a large piece of fat in the bowl. The red beans and rice were well-seasoned, but the portion leaned heavily on rice with fewer beans than I would've liked. On a high note, the cornbread was excellent. The fish was well seasoned. I also tried the peach cobbler--it was just okay. When I went to the to-go counter, the staff seemed a bit bothered, as if I was interrupting their conversation while waiting to order. Overall, I left feeling a little disappointed, especially since I came in with such high hopes. That said, it may have just been an off day. read more

Food is great!! Potato Salad, Mac n Cheese, Candied Yams in point! I didn't care for the green beans or collard greens. When you've had them from Louisiana, it's hard to measure up to the memory of that. Just what you need when you want a taste of some southern comfort food. Our service has always been great. The staff has always been pleasant! Ambiance is very lighted and like a big lunch room with family. Sit in the bar area if you want to watch a game! Very filling! Everything was outstanding. I ordered fried fish, rib tips, mac and cheese, greens, a hot link, and sweet potatoe pie. 4.5 stars. I don't typically get southern food but my friends and I came for a birthday dinner. All the food was tasty and the portion sizes are pretty generous. At first I didn't think there was gonna be enough brisket, but everything is pretty heavy so you get full pretty quickly. The brisket plate came with two sides, I chose collard greens and Mac and cheese. I felt extremely full before finishing the sides. The brisket was by far the highlight. It felt like it melted in my mouth and it was seasoned well. The wings were okay, wish they were crispier. The biscoff cheesecake was way too sweet for my friends and it. It was very tasty, but it was super thick and creamy. Split 4 ways we couldn't finish it. Overall, I definitely recommend checking this place out for some hearty and tasty southern food read more

For a fast food joint, I thought Jackie's Place was great. There were so many things on the menu that I wanted to order, and I wasn't even hungry! Everything looked good. The decor was pretty hip with the photo-worthy angel wings wall by the bathroom. You do need to clear your own table and help yourself to utensils, but it makes the dining much faster, which is what I was looking for at the time. We had less than an hour to decide what to eat, order, get food, eat, and be outta there! They even served beer, which my friend had, and I had sweet tea, which actually tasted real and not artificial (though it probably wasn't homemade, but that's okay). The only downside was they were out of 2 meats, one of which we wanted (brisket!!) so that was a bummer. We chose pulled pork for our nachos, which was still delicious. My tip, for next time is to ask for more nachos than fries because the cheese and other saucy things they put on top make the fries mushy; the chips stay crispy. (Also fyi: the nachos are a little spicy, so if you can't take the heat, you may want to say something or order something else.). The meat was tender and tasty, the service was attentive and friendly (they even told a larger group they could sit first instead of order at the counter if they preferred, which was nice), and the place was spacious and clean. Other than the slight mushiness in the middle, our food was great, and we polished the entire plate licketysplit! If we had more time, we would have gotten wings and other goodies. Conveniently located downtown, we were able to walk there from our Hilton Signia hotel. My son met us after coming from the state university, and it was only about a two-block walk. Downtown San Jose felt so peaceful, and it was a great place to be out with the family. We took a nice family walk to get there, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere was very family-friendly and welcoming. we were greeted right away and there was plenty of space to sit. We found a table quickly and ordered at the kiosk, which made everything very simple. My daughter got the chicken sandwich with mac and a side of candied yams. My son ordered the brisket rib burger with mac, and I got the barbecue chicken with two sides--greens and mac. My son also got the JuJu juice, my daughter had a watermelon lemonade, and I ordered a sweet tea. When I tell you every single thing was a solid 10 out of 10, I mean it. The food was amazing. I love this place. The people are a vibe, the place itself is a vibe, and the music is unmatched. We truly enjoyed it, and this will definitely be one of the spots we visit every time we come through. read more

My girl & I came in last friday for the first time, was extremely pleased w the warm & expedient service. They had so many people working & each one of em was excellent! I felt very comfortable with my date as there was plenty of seating, instead of doing the short wait for the dining room we opted for the bar seating as thats something we often do when dining out:) we weren't sure what to order because anything & everything here looks bomb & sounds good on the menu. the bartender was sweet asl & so were the drinks so we get the chicken & waffles and a smoked brisket plate that came w greens & mac and ill just emote hereI really like the seasoning of the chicken, its a lil more complex & a lot more flavorful than the chicken & waffles we're used to getting at restaurants brisket was on incredible, sides were awesome, we definitely gotta bring family here when they come out to visit us & enjoy everything off the menu. chill ambiance, excellent space, my ONLY regret is we didn't get anything from the bakery because that all looked bomb too we just had a cake we had to finish waiting for us in the fridge s/o the staff for being so accommodating & incredible, we can't wait to pull up again sometime soon! read more

I saw this place on check please Bay Area, article in sj merc and I had been to the previous location near the airport. This place is definitely a big step from the airport. T HH e candied yams rocked. Omg a must. Mac n cheese was good. Pulled pork was good but I wish I had a different sauce. I had a pulled pork last week that was hard to compare to tonight. I was pretty full so I'm taking the pulled pork home for a leftover sandwich. Or 2. Corn muffin was tasty. I wanted butter but it actually was moist and good with just the honey glaze that was on it. My husband liked the gumbo. He didn't leave any behind. He did wish his came with a side. I honestly would have been happy with a side dinner- their were too Many good options. The minus is the beer selection but you can't beat the price on the corona. We will be back. Prices are decent and our kid would like this place. Love the location and parking lot. Stopped in for a quick (small) bite today and I absolutely love this spot!!! I didn't get much food this time around, but I had enough to know I want to come back. Service is 10/10- the people working here are so kind, helpful, and attentive. It's a big place with plenty of seating. And I was seated within 30 seconds of walking in the door. I got the gumbo and it is THE best gumbo I've had. It was full of meat-- they did not skimp whatsoever. And it was flavorful and everything I hoped it would be. Cornbread that it came with was great too. Also the menu mentioned Pepsi products but they actually have Coke and Diet Coke. Just for anyone that's as picky about Diet Coke as I am lol. We arrived during lunch and were seated right away. The hostess was welcoming, and our server explained how to order as well as where to find the water station and takeout boxes. We ordered the hot links, cornbread, and two chicken and waffles plates. For the chicken and waffles, you can choose either chicken wings or chicken filets. The portions were generous, and we ended up needing a couple of takeout boxes by the end of the meal. The food was good overall. I'll start with the highlight: the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, and clearly made with care. The drinks were excellent, and I highly recommend the mac and cheese, yams, gumbo, and greens. The greens were a bit underwhelming for my taste, but overall the food was the star of the experience. I was also disappointed to learn that the black-eyed peas have been removed from the menu. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. We were celebrating my uncle's 75th birthday, and I had hoped for a more attentive and welcoming experience. Even a simple birthday acknowledgment would have been appreciated. Throughout the meal, it often felt like asking for assistance was an inconvenience, and our table wasn't checked on as frequently as expected. I visited because this restaurant came highly recommended, and while I would absolutely return for the food, I wouldn't choose it again for a special event or celebration. FIREEEE. Definitely the best bbq place I've been to in the Bay Area. The portions are insane and reasonably priced. Normally when people say "you can split it in two meals" I can still eat it all in one sitting. But at Jackie's I actually get to take leftovers. The ribs were amazing and the sauce is so good. I also got a side of the fried fish which was so crispy and seasoned to perfection. The only thing lacking for me a bit was the mac n cheese.
