    Blacker the Berry cocktail!
    Alexa J.

I'll start with the highlight: the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, and clearly made with care. The drinks were excellent, and I highly recommend the mac and cheese, yams, gumbo, and greens. The greens were a bit underwhelming for my taste, but overall the food was the star of the experience. I was also disappointed to learn that the black-eyed peas have been removed from the menu. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. We were celebrating my uncle's 75th birthday, and I had hoped for a more attentive and welcoming experience. Even a simple birthday acknowledgment would have been appreciated. Throughout the meal, it often felt like asking for assistance was an inconvenience, and our table wasn't checked on as frequently as expected. I visited because this restaurant came highly recommended, and while I would absolutely return for the food, I wouldn't choose it again for a special event or celebration. In my opinion, it's a great spot for takeout, a casual meal, or sitting at the bar, but it may not be the best choice for hosting a gathering or milestone occasion.

We had jackie's place for takeout this time around with friends who live in the area. I decided to try the fried fish while everyone else got pulled pork and brisket. I made the bad decision of getting the fish as it was too thin and more batter than fish. The brisket and pulled pork were amazing and so tender! The candied yams, mac n cheese, beans and beef, etc etc were all so well made! This is the only place in the bay to get amazing bbq without the long line!

Ordered off GrubHub and the food came fast and fresh. I got the ribs, brisket, pulled pork and one piece of fried fish with sides of mac&cheese and candied yams. My favorite was the pulled pork and the candied yams so yummy together. Only came with 1 tiny bbq sauce but the sauce was good. The brisket was kind of fatty don't think I would order it again. The fried fish was kind of dry. Overall I would order the ribs and pulled pork again very tasty!

OK so first let me start by saying that as I pulled into the parking lot and got out of the car I was so ecstatic to try this food. It smelt so good and reminds you I was super hungry. One of the things that rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that you had to pay before you got your food. There are QR code sitting on the table with the menus attached and that is where you pay. If you would like water, you can go get it yourself. If you want to go containers, you can go get it. Yourself and silverware is prepackaged on the table. Bathroom down a flight upstairs into a basement. Customer service was nice. Now let's get down to the nitty and greedy this food... For someone that was extremely hungry I was not a fan at all whatsoever of this food! This food made my stomach hurt and I barely ate any of it. Once I broke this chicken apart I determined that I looked a little odd however looks can be deceiving. Therefore, I proceeded to taste a little small piece and from there I realized that my chicken taste like chicken. If you know, you know what I'm talking about. The gentleman that came about to help me out suggested making me a new plate and bring it out out. I respectfully decline as I have a very sensitive stomach and I did not want to risk getting ill. Will I be back? no. The watermelon lemonade taste like Crystal lite packaging with tons of water. I will say that there are a lot of parking slots in the lot.

We came in around 6 PM on a Sunday, they close at 7 PM and they were still pretty busy. Juju was greeting customers and she was very friendly. We were sat quickly. You order on your phone and pay before the food comes. They were out of quite a few things, probably because they are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Anyway, I ordered the following: -corn ribs, very tasty and seasoned well. I ordered set it off sauce with this and they gave me ranch instead, so I had to go ask for it -jackfruit sandwich, a generous amount of jackfruit, but the bun was very burned and left a charred flavor in my mouth. They also said they don't have pickles, which I thought was odd for a BBQ place. -my partner ordered brisket and rib tips, he enjoyed it. I don't love the ordering process because if you need something you have to get up and find someone. So I guess it's more like fast food. However, there are plenty of people around to help and they are friendly. Clean inside and they have a self-serve water station. Lots of seating inside, vegetarian options, and a patio!

I was excited to try this place and had high expectations going in. The setup is a bit different--you're seated and then order using a QR code at the table. I did have a few questions but wasn't able to find any wait staff to assist. I ordered the rib plate. While it was good, I was expecting a bolder flavor overall. The collard greens were nicely seasoned with a bit of spice, though there was a large piece of fat in the bowl. The red beans and rice were well-seasoned, but the portion leaned heavily on rice with fewer beans than I would've liked. On a high note, the cornbread was excellent. The fish was well seasoned. I also tried the peach cobbler--it was just okay. When I went to the to-go counter, the staff seemed a bit bothered, as if I was interrupting their conversation while waiting to order. Overall, I left feeling a little disappointed, especially since I came in with such high hopes. That said, it may have just been an off day.

Wow, I haven't had takeout this good in a while! My daughter and SIL decide to treat us for dinner one Saturday night and decided on trying out Jackie's Place. A popular San Jose spot that's been in my Yelp go-to list for a minute now, as Jackie's Place is known for authentic soul food and Texas-style BBQ. Our food was: * Fried Chicken Wings. The best breaded DF wings I've had in SJ * Smoked Beef Brisket. Dry but tastes best w/ JP's Orig BBQ sauce * Uncle Greg's Ribs. Savory & probably the best reason to come here * Smoke BBQ Wings. Didn't get to taste as my SIL devoured it * Hot Links. Just the right delicious heat from a sausage * Honey Butter Cornbread. OMG! Said this cornbread hating fella * Butter Pound Cake. Looks unappealing but oddly moist and tasty * Banana Pudding. Smooth serving of creamy dessert * Key Lime Pie. Dominated by sweetness, but balanced w/ the lime . The Juju (cherry and grape Kool-Aid). Tasted like medicine :) We kept raving about it the food while eating and after eating. Even the next day, we were still talking about the ribs and cornbread. FYI. There were a lot of leftovers as we ordered a bunch and JP's has generous portions. The food was deeply flavorful, hearty & high-quality. DO NOT forget the sauces. Surely coming back for a dine-in meal to try out the cocktails, the sides and the other items ie the Smothered Chicken and Mac & Cheese. Jackie's Place is an amazing locally owned establishment in the South Bay.

We arrived during lunch and were seated right away. The hostess was welcoming, and our server explained how to order as well as where to find the water station and takeout boxes. We ordered the hot links, cornbread, and two chicken and waffles plates. For the chicken and waffles, you can choose either chicken wings or chicken filets. The portions were generous, and we ended up needing a couple of takeout boxes by the end of the meal. The food was good overall. I liked the hot links because they had a nice level of spice, though we definitely ordered more food than our table could finish!

Ordered the hot link plate with a side of fries, mac and cheese, corn bread, and mustard. It was all very good, no complaints. Its even better when reheated in the air fryer, especially the corn bread. Partner got the brisket nachos. Again, very good. Great texture and mix of flavors. Their green sauce tasted fresh. We went during Fanime weekend so the wait time was very long (20+ minutes), but im not holding that against them.

Jackie's Place was a solid choice today. I ordered the fried fish with collard greens and chili beans, and it definitely hit the spot. The fish had a crispy, perfectly seasoned crust and was cooked just right. The collard greens were flavorful. The chili beans were good as well, just a bit on the salty side, but still enjoyable overall. Great comfort food, good portions, and a welcoming vibe. Service is excellent.

For a fast food joint, I thought Jackie's Place was great. There were so many things on the menu that I wanted to order, and I wasn't even hungry! Everything looked good. The decor was pretty hip with the photo-worthy angel wings wall by the bathroom. You do need to clear your own table and help yourself to utensils, but it makes the dining much faster, which is what I was looking for at the time. We had less than an hour to decide what to eat, order, get food, eat, and be outta there! They even served beer, which my friend had, and I had sweet tea, which actually tasted real and not artificial (though it probably wasn't homemade, but that's okay). The only downside was they were out of 2 meats, one of which we wanted (brisket!!) so that was a bummer. We chose pulled pork for our nachos, which was still delicious. My tip, for next time is to ask for more nachos than fries because the cheese and other saucy things they put on top make the fries mushy; the chips stay crispy. (Also fyi: the nachos are a little spicy, so if you can't take the heat, you may want to say something or order something else.). The meat was tender and tasty, the service was attentive and friendly (they even told a larger group they could sit first instead of order at the counter if they preferred, which was nice), and the place was spacious and clean. Other than the slight mushiness in the middle, our food was great, and we polished the entire plate licketysplit! If we had more time, we would have gotten wings and other goodies. I wish there was a Jackie's Place near me!

Conveniently located downtown, we were able to walk there from our Hilton Signia hotel. My son met us after coming from the state university, and it was only about a two-block walk. Downtown San Jose felt so peaceful, and it was a great place to be out with the family. We took a nice family walk to get there, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere was very family-friendly and welcoming. we were greeted right away and there was plenty of space to sit. We found a table quickly and ordered at the kiosk, which made everything very simple. My daughter got the chicken sandwich with mac and a side of candied yams. My son ordered the brisket rib burger with mac, and I got the barbecue chicken with two sides--greens and mac. My son also got the JuJu juice, my daughter had a watermelon lemonade, and I ordered a sweet tea. When I tell you every single thing was a solid 10 out of 10, I mean it. The food was amazing. I love this place. The people are a vibe, the place itself is a vibe, and the music is unmatched. We truly enjoyed it, and this will definitely be one of the spots we visit every time we come through.

My wife and I visited Jackie's Place on North First Street in San Jose for the first time today. Arriving around 11:45 AM, we found ample parking and were immediately greeted by the wonderful aroma of the smoker working out back. We were seated quickly by a polite gentleman who kindly explained the ordering process to us newcomers. The food arrived after a reasonable wait. I ordered the brisket with two sides, which was outstanding--tender, delicious, and perfectly smoked. My wife chose the smothered chicken with three sides. While the chicken itself was tender and well-seasoned, the gravy wasn't quite to my personal taste, though my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. The fries, I felt, were tasty but were more than we needed because the portions were adequate. The sides were a major highlight. The collard greens were incredibly well-seasoned and easily on par with my grandmother's cooking. The cole slaw had a touch of spice, probably from added pepper that gave it a great kick, and the brisket chili beans were tasty, even if not quite as memorable as the greens. The only downsides were the lack of check-ins and we did not see a salad option on the menu. While the initial greeting was excellent, we never saw our host again and received no further table service after our food arrived. Overall, if you love soul food, Jackie's is a delicious choice. I am already looking forward to finishing our leftovers tonight so I can have another taste of the gravy and I can't wait to return to try the oxtails and their famous fried chicken. I highly recommend visiting to let your own palate judge.

My husband and I's favorite place to eat in the world is New Orleans so this place definitely did not disappoint. We started with coffee drinks, I had some sort of boozy espresso drink which I could have done without since the bitters tasted like licorice which is probably a taste preference. My husband had the grandma coffee which was also fine. Then the food came out and it went up from here! The catfish & grits just might be the best I've ever had. My husband also really enjoyed his banana foster French toast, & i loved that they allowed you to get one piece of fried chicken because i had to try it out despite a full meal. The wing I had was Nice & crunchy with a delicious sweet sauce on the side that reminded me of mambo sauce ( a DC staple.) My husband also had the gumbo which was good but I wouldn't say our favorite. I prefer my gumbo with a little more spice but that could just be personal preference. We ended the meal with beignets: I had the ube beignet which was so unique & flavorful! I don't think I would have had a chance to try that type of beignet anywhere else so glad to try something different, it was delicious. The crawfish beignet was also so flavorful! The beignets in general were much more bready than typical beignets but still very good & unique to this place. On top of that, the service was great & the food came out quick, hot & fresh! I wish we had more time (& stomach space) to try other items on the menu, everywhere we looked everything looked delicious so we'll just have to try more the next time we're back in SF!

The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

The Front Porch is a great spot for brunch in South Mission…read more I really enjoyed both the burger and cocktail that I had. The restaurant itself is nice, and feels good for both friends or even dates. One bummer is that they don't have that much outdoor seating and that the inside is dark. I had no issues with the service and thought it was good.

My partner took me out this time to the Front Porch for dinner. I don't think I've tried as much…read moresouthern food as I've wanted to so I was delighted to hear about this place. She had heard about this place from a client that she had worked with a couple weeks ago. The place had a really cool vibe to it; it's like you're stepping into a more intimate, Cracker Barrel. We were seated by the front of house pretty quickly. The space could hold quite a few people, there is a bar area and outside seating. We sat in the back by the kitchen. When we got there, we ordered a couple drinks and a lot of food. I had the okey-dokey artichokey and my partner had the respect your elders drink; both were strong and tasty. It went well with our appetizers of fried okra and fried calamari. I really enjoyed the jalapeño aïoli that came with the okra so much that I started dipping the calamari in it. The calamari coating on the outside was a lot heavier than what I was used to, but it was still really tasty. For our main entrées, I got the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens and my partner got the porch burger with fries. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly. It wasn't dry. It was juicy and I really liked putting their homemade hot sauce on the chicken and greens. The habanero hot sauce was really spicy, but I liked how sweet it was. My partner's burger was cooked perfectly and it was a big portion. I definitely recommend this place to someone who is bold enough to go on a date and still eat with their hands. Somehow, this was elevated southern food, which could be shown by the prices, but I think it's worth it once in a while.
