I wanted to like this place so bad, especially with the abundance of 4 and 5-star reviews. But I think that was part of the problem. I went in with really high expectations. To me, the food ended up being just okay. It definitely wasn't bad, but a lot of it was dry and pretty average when it came to seasoning and flavor. Now, you might be thinking, "What do I know about good BBQ?". To be fair, I'm not claiming to be a BBQ expert. But I do know I've had BBQ at other well-known spots around the Bay Area and even in Texas that was much more flavorful, juicy, and moist. FOOD: 7/10 A lot of us ordered brisket-based dishes, and unfortunately, the brisket was pretty dry. Even after dipping it in their BBQ sauce, it was still dry, the sauce mainly just added flavor. For my sides, I got the potato salad and coleslaw. The potato salad was good! The coleslaw, however, was pretty mid. It mostly tasted like plain cabbage and could've used a bit more flavor. The cornbread had a nice, slightly toasted exterior, but the inside was very dry and crumbly, making each bite fall apart. I was especially excited to try the banana pudding because I'd been craving it for the longest time, and thankfully, it didn't disappoint. It had that classic creamy pudding texture, the vanilla wafers were perfectly soft, the whipped cream was smooth, and overall I really enjoyed it. SERVICE: 9/10 Ordering is done through a QR code on your phone, and the staff brings everything out to you. We had barely submitted our order when our drinks and dessert arrived, and our entrées followed shortly after. Everything came out surprisingly fast. We also had the chance to meet Juju, who is Jackie's cousin (Jackie is the owner and chef). If you look at the menu, there's actually a section featuring Juju's specialty teas and juices. She was honestly the sweetest and funniest person. I absolutely adored her! She was so fun to chat with and shared that a lot of well-known Bay Area names have stopped by Jackie's, including LaRussell, E-40, and members of the 49ers. It was such a nice interaction and definitely one of the highlights of our visit. AMBIANCE: 7/10 The restaurant is simple and spacious with plenty of different seating options. If you're looking to grab a drink, they also have a bar area. The restrooms are downstairs. The sink and toilet were kind of going through it but they got the job done. There's parking available both upstairs and downstairs. Just be careful because the parking spaces are pretty tight and narrow. Each one that I had I would order again: the southern fried fish plate with green beans, candied yams, and corn bread. Some in my party were clearly veterans and ordered a bunch of food to go. I had jury duty for 3 days at SJ Superior Court and had to find lunch places during my time on the jury. Luckily, Jackie's Place is within walking distance from the courthouse. I like a good BBQ and this was very very good. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with coleslaw as my side. The meat was very flavorful and VERY tender, which was great, because I was eating standing up due to reasons that aren't necessary to explain. But it was easy to take bits off the meat without having to put the entire piece into my mouth - you can see it's cooked well, but still so tender. And tasty! The bun and coleslaw were also good - big portion of coleslaw! But the star of the show was the beef. $19 for the sandwich + coleslaw, which I thought was fair given the quality. I ordered at the counter as take-out, and it took while (15 min?), but it was worth it. The person who took my order was friendly and cheery and the place looked clean and like it would be a fun place to eat had I had the time to do so. My mom told me this place was voted one of the best soul food restaurants in San Jose so when I was here for my sons baseball game we all came to eat and my mom was not lying! If you would like water, you can go get it yourself. If you want to go containers, you can go get it. Yourself and silverware is prepackaged on the table. For someone that was extremely hungry I was not a fan at all whatsoever of this food! This food made my stomach hurt and I barely ate any of it. Once I broke this chicken apart I determined that I looked a little odd however looks can be deceiving. Therefore, I proceeded to taste a little small piece and from there I realized that my chicken taste like chicken. If you know, you know what I'm talking about. You order on your phone and pay before the food comes. They were out of quite a few things, probably because they are closed on Monday and Tuesday. I ordered set it off sauce with this and they gave me ranch instead, so I had to go ask for it -jackfruit sandwich, a generous amount of jackfruit, but the bun was very burned and left a charred flavor in my mouth. They also said they don't have pickles, which I thought was odd for a BBQ place. -my partner ordered brisket and rib tips, he enjoyed it. At first I didn't think there was gonna be enough brisket, but everything is pretty heavy so you get full pretty quickly. The brisket plate came with two sides, I chose collard greens and Mac and cheese. I felt extremely full before finishing the sides. The brisket was by far the highlight. It felt like it melted in my mouth and it was seasoned well. The wings were okay, wish they were crispier. The biscoff cheesecake was way too sweet for my friends and it. I was excited to try this place and had high expectations going in. The setup is a bit different--you're seated and then order using a QR code at the table. I did have a few questions but wasn't able to find any wait staff to assist. I ordered the rib plate. While it was good, I was expecting a bolder flavor overall. The collard greens were nicely seasoned with a bit of spice, though there was a large piece of fat in the bowl. The red beans and rice were well-seasoned, but the portion leaned heavily on rice with fewer beans than I would've liked. On a high note, the cornbread was excellent. The fish was well seasoned. I also tried the peach cobbler--it was just okay. When I went to the to-go counter, the staff seemed a bit bothered, as if I was interrupting their conversation while waiting to order. For a fast food joint, I thought Jackie's Place was great. There were so many things on the menu that I wanted to order, and I wasn't even hungry! Everything looked good. The decor was pretty hip with the photo-worthy angel wings wall by the bathroom. You do need to clear your own table and help yourself to utensils, but it makes the dining much faster, which is what I was looking for at the time. We had less than an hour to decide what to eat, order, get food, eat, and be outta there! They even served beer, which my friend had, and I had sweet tea, which actually tasted real and not artificial (though it probably wasn't homemade, but that's okay). The only downside was they were out of 2 meats, one of which we wanted (brisket!!) so that was a bummer. We chose pulled pork for our nachos, which was still delicious. My tip, for next time is to ask for more nachos than fries because the cheese and other saucy things they put on top make the fries mushy; the chips stay crispy. (Also fyi: the nachos are a little spicy, so if you can't take the heat, you may want to say something or order something else.). The meat was tender and tasty, the service was attentive and friendly (they even told a larger group they could sit first instead of order at the counter if they preferred, which was nice), and the place was spacious and clean. Conveniently located downtown, we were able to walk there from our Hilton Signia hotel. My son met us after coming from the state university, and it was only about a two-block walk. Downtown San Jose felt so peaceful, and it was a great place to be out with the family. We took a nice family walk to get there, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere was very family-friendly and welcoming. we were greeted right away and there was plenty of space to sit. We found a table quickly and ordered at the kiosk, which made everything very simple. My daughter got the chicken sandwich with mac and a side of candied yams. My son ordered the brisket rib burger with mac, and I got the barbecue chicken with two sides--greens and mac. My son also got the JuJu juice, my daughter had a watermelon lemonade, and I ordered a sweet tea. When I tell you every single thing was a solid 10 out of 10, I mean it. The food was amazing. I love this place. The people are a vibe, the place itself is a vibe, and the music is unmatched. The food is... okay. It's "fast food" soul food. I had the fried chicken with coleslaw and mac-n-cheese on the side. The sides were good. The fried chicken was greasy and a little bland. It wasn't bad, but nothing I would go back for. The service left much to be desired. My party (of 3) arrived to a mostly empty restaurant and it took around five minutes to be noticed and seated. Once seated, we realized that if you want to place your order with a person rather than via their digital system (more on this in a moment) you have to go back to entry area. One of our party members opted for this and he said he had to actively wave down staff as no one was manning the front. Even then, the staff seemed annoyed at the fact that he didn't use the online menu system. Twice while waiting for our food, the staff brought the wrong order to our table. To order food, you have to scan a QR code on the table to access a menu online via which you place your order and pay. This was an issue for one of our party members for whom the QR code didn't work. It was probably an issue with his phone's settings... but it's not fun having to solve tech glitches when you're hungry and all you want to do is simply order some food. This is coupled with the fact that the when you pay, the system automatically tries to add a 20% gratuity to the bill. For what service? Waiting to be seated in a nearly empty restaurant, where you don't even talk to a real person to order food - and if you do has to do it via the staff, they seem annoyed by the fact? I ended up at Jackie's Place on my last night in San Jose. I absolutely love BBQ, Soul Food, Fish, etc. Jackie's Place happened to be right near my hotel and seemed like a perfect fit. I looked at the menu before arriving but couldn't decide. When I arrived, it was a comfortable ambience. The gentleman who very polite asked me if I was in a hurry, which I replied I was not. He asked me if I was health conscious. Ha! Funniest question I've been asked at that type of place. I replied, not super health conscious. My wife wasn't there. Ha! He suggested the catfish. I ordered the catfish, which I normally love. When it arrived, I had catfish, fries, slaw, and cornbread. Everything looked great! However, when I grabbed a battered fry, it was soggy. Why are there soggy battered fries? The catfish looked fried perfectly. However, it was a combination of chewy breading mushy fish. Unfortunately, this was really disappointing. As I looked around everyone was eating BBQ. I should have ordered either the brisket or the ribs as that's what I saw everyone eating. Jackie's place is near my hotel, and I will give it another shot. It was busy, which is a good sign. But no one was eating what I was eating. Perhaps a bad sign. Next time I will order the BBQ. This review is of a delivery order placed on Father's Day. We ordered right at 11am when they opened and received our order just before noon. I got a fried chicken plate with a side of mac and cheese and collard greens. My husband got the mango habenero wings and fries. The kids shared brisket and mac and cheese. The chicken was crispy, well seasoned and hot, the brisket soft and smoky, the mac and cheese was possibly the best mac and cheese I've ever had in my life (I'm not a huge meat eater in general so this was my favorite)???? The collard greens were flavorful and a hint of spice. We have little kids so we find ordering delivery easier but I noticed on their website they do Soul Sundays with live music from 1:30-3:30...and I really want to try to make that work one day. Best BBQ by far in the Bay! Ribs.. on point Collard Greens.. on point Corn bread.. yumm (but they can be a little bigger) Mac n cheese.. great portion (could be a little more creamier) we also ordered the banana pudding, which is super yummy. We had the seafood gumbo, not too spicy, but spicy enough and it was good with big portions of seafood and sausage with a scoop of rice over it. Ordering was easy we scanned a barcode put in our order and got our food within 10 minutes. Great customer service very clean and while we were eating, we could see that the employees put a lot of care into cleaning the tables and seats. Plenty of parking in back very spacious. They have overhead fans, but no need to turn them on because the restaurant was cool and airy not stuffy or hot. The waiters or servers always checked up on us to make sure that we were OK and if we needed anything else. This restaurant knows what they're doing! Added to one of my fav spots! read more

My wife and I visited Jackie's Place on North First Street in San Jose for the first time today. Arriving around 11:45 AM, we found ample parking and were immediately greeted by the wonderful aroma of the smoker working out back. We were seated quickly by a polite gentleman who kindly explained the ordering process to us newcomers. The food arrived after a reasonable wait. I ordered the brisket with two sides, which was outstanding--tender, delicious, and perfectly smoked. My wife chose the smothered chicken with three sides. While the chicken itself was tender and well-seasoned, the gravy wasn't quite to my personal taste, though my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. The fries, I felt, were tasty but were more than we needed because the portions were adequate. The sides were a major highlight. The collard greens were incredibly well-seasoned and easily on par with my grandmother's cooking. The cole slaw had a touch of spice, probably from added pepper that gave it a great kick, and the brisket chili beans were tasty, even if not quite as memorable as the greens. The only downsides were the lack of check-ins and we did not see a salad option on the menu. While the initial greeting was excellent, we never saw our host again and received no further table service after our food arrived. Overall, if you love soul food, Jackie's is a delicious choice. I am already looking forward to finishing our leftovers tonight so I can have another taste of the gravy and I can't wait to return to try the oxtails and their famous fried chicken. This place was ok. Came here for a work team meeting. I got the rib tip sandwiches, my boss got the smothered chicken, another colleague got the chicken and waffle. Not your traditional restaurant? You order through a QR code and have to pay after ordering. There was limited interaction with any servers, only food runners. My burger, though saucy was a bit dry. FIREEEE. Definitely the best bbq place I've been to in the Bay Area. The portions are insane and reasonably priced. Normally when people say "you can split it in two meals" I can still eat it all in one sitting. But at Jackie's I actually get to take leftovers. The ribs were amazing and the sauce is so good. I also got a side of the fried fish which was so crispy and seasoned to perfection. The only thing lacking for me a bit was the mac n cheese.
