Are we talking about the same Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants? I can't believe that it got a 2.4 out of 5 rating. I really loath medical clinics, most of them (all that I had ever visited) were not that impressive. However, been to both locations of this consultants in Wilmington several times and have to say that the staff (including some doctors, nurses, clericals ...) are wonderful, very easy to talk to and absolutely kind. I can't say all the doctors are nice, but I was lucky to get a few (like Dr. Wohlhagen) who have great bedside manners, knowledgeable and treat you like you are actually a human being (LOL). I can understand how frustrating it could be to book an appointment with them. Guess when they are good, everyone will want to go there. Do imagine how scheduling an appointment could be tedious and boring. The staff can only book an appointment if there's a vacancy. I had witnessed how unreasonable and rude some of the patients were. In fact, you have to give credit to those staff at the front desk. They are patient and able to take all those "abuse". Maybe next time when you visit this clinic, try to smile and say "hi" to those staff at the front desk first and see how you are treated. read more

My wife has been a long time patient with them for years, so when I tried calling today to become a new patient I was met with the most rudest person ever who bluntly told me that they were not taking new patients at the moment for routine eye exams! Which is kind of funny since their automated message you get when calling them states "we are taking new patients at all locations!'. read more

The AI telephone system does not allow any real person contact. When the option is 7. it goes to "13? does not answer". Either you have to go to the office to see someone or go to urgent care for an ointment to cure an infection from a style. read more

Barrett performed cataract surgery. Vision was terrible after replacement lense. Highly skilled ophthalmologist from another practice explained that I should have had mono lenses not the ones that DOC used. Now, it's too risky to replace and I have to live with this disaster. read more

I have been a long time patient of Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants, and I had surgery through them that requires follow up care. My last appointment was in 2022. Since that time I have been unable to get an appointment in a reasonable timeframe. In 2023 I called for an appointment and was given a date ten months later. One month prior to my appointment I was notified that my appointment was canceled and could not be rescheduled. The reason given was because there were a lot of changes in the office and that most of the doctors had left the practice. I called again today (May 2025) and requested an appointment for a routine eye exam and was informed they could not schedule an appointment until May 2027. When asked why, I was informed they were still experiencing a lot of changes. This office is being managed in a completely unacceptable manner for at least the last three years. I was seen on 1/8/26 in the Middletown office by Dr Barrett and was advised that I would receive a call back within a week to schedule cataract surgery. I was also informed that the surgery could be scheduled in February. After repeated calls, I still have not heard from the scheduler. I will not be returning to this practice. read more

They transfer my doctor to a different office Theyv gave me this Dr. Brian Johnson. He was horrible. I could tell how he spoke. I told him I had not put tears in my eyes for a while. He said your preasure was a little high. See you in 3 to 4 months. I said 6 months. He said I put it down for 6 months very nastsy . I went to the front and they wanted 3 to 4 months I said 6 months . I will cancel the appointment. They made it for 6 months unhappyly I told him up front why they were high. It is all about the almighty buck.He also said I may put you on medicine if eye presure is high. That is another way of making money. When I had a field test last year they tried to charge me $120. I called medicare and they said we will pay . It took three times for them to get things right. I only paid around $53 They were not nice about it. My kids were scheduled for an eye appointment in December, appointment went great. Daughter decided she wanted to try contacts. We did not get a call for over a month to schedule the eye contact "class" even though the front desk said it would be a week. I did call and left a couple of VM with no return call.. finally someone called and they only schedule the class a week in advance. For me only being able to schedule a week out and not a couple weeks to be able to notify my job accordingly is poor practice management. We went to the "class" and she was unable to get them in, so someone was supposed to call me to get her into another class, that was again over a month ago. I recently suffered a pretty bad eye injury and chose Delaware Opthalmology for treatment naturally! my attending O.D. was great and soon realized I may have a l loose lens as well as an abrasion on my cornea and DR.Nowicki sent me to my longtime retina specialist DR. Jason Kaplan for the tough stuff to come. Dr. Kaplan is very patient and explained everything to me. As well as keeping me upbeat. I have no doubt he will take excellent care of my eye and I already trust him with care of my retina!!! read more

You cannot get someone on the phone to get it rescheduled. You leave messages, no one every calls you back. You have to wait on hold forever. You finally get through. Every time I am there I am told something different about what type of appointment I need. and this time, I was told I have not been seen for three years? Really, then I guess you won't mind refunding me. I've been a patient for years. My family have been patients. I had an appointment scheduled a year in advance. When I arrived for my appointment after driving 1 hour and 45 minutes from lower Delaware I was informed Dr. Stuart had taken a personal day. I was told I was notified. I verified my phone number on record was correct and reviewed all texts. I was never notified. Two weeks later a letter came home informing me that my appointment had been cancelled. They would not work me in that day. I had to reschedule and drive another 1 hour and 45 minutes home. DOC was customer focused previously.. It is now another medical factory with zero concern for customers. To schedule an appointment is at least 6 to 7 months out. If I could give zero stars I would. I had a problem whereby I had large multi colored floaters in my right eye. I went to DOC and was taken in immediately to have an eye test and scan. I was then interviewed by a doctor who reviewed my medical history. She told me that she wanted me to be seen by the senior retina specialist. Dr. Kaplan reviewed the scan results, then he recommended a course of treatments, the first of which he did immediately and then scheduled two follow up visits. His treatment program worked perfectly and my vision is excellent again. I would also add that his support team is very efficient and personable. Everyone is happy to answer any questions and they keep the process moving, I would highly recommend Dr. Kaplan to anyone having vision issues. read more

Impossible to get through to them via phone. When you finally get to leave a message its all for naught because they do not call back. Had an appointment and although I had been there before with the same insurance, the receptionist could not locate my insurance information. As this took more than 15 minutes they cancelled my appointment (althought I was standing right there) and then proceeded to make me wait another 30 minutes till they could reschedule. Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants has provided my eye care for many years. I have only good things to say about both the Silverside and the Limestone Road offices. The reception staff is efficient for checking in. My wait time has been minimal before being seen. The technicians are competent and thorough. As for the physicians, they have all been excellent. For the past five years I have been treated by Dr. Kaplan for a retina inflammation. He has been thorough in his explanations and gentle when he has injected by eye. He has taken the time to answer every question I may have had. He is a gem! In reading other reviews of this office, I am appalled at those who criticize wait times. Those patients need to remember that if they ever have an eye emergency, they are going to want to be seen immediately. Those emergencies can lead to back ups for scheduled patients. A patient who is "patient" is always appreciated by all. In summary, I would highly recommend the doctors and staff at Delaware Opthalmology Consultants. read more

We've been patients of Delaware Ophthalmology for many years, and their doctors continue to leave the practice. My husband and I scheduled our appointments 1 year ago for June, and got a text message 1 week before our appointment that they were cancelled. We called and left a message for them to call back to reschedule. We did not hear from them for a few days after our call, so we called and left another message. Just got a call back, and they cannot reschedule until late October / early November . . . remember it is now June! We are not in town October through May each year, so that change does not allow us to see an eye doctor for 2 years! That is just not the right way to treat a long-term patient!!! I was here for a visual field test this morning. purposely took the first appointment of the morning at 8:30 - given previous experience with how bad they are with keeping time. the tech didn't show up in the office till 8:40 - and was going to boot up the machine at that point. she was not concerned or apologetic about not keeping time. don't care attitude. in fact she seemed surprised about why I was asking questions about the time. read more

I have no issue with the medical care at this practice. I first came to them with an emergency and was taken immediately. I have been back twice for annual exams and have been very happy with Dr. Ali. My issue is with the Optical Department. After my last visit, I thought I would try their department. I ordered glasses and when they came in, I had to wait for almost a week for an appointment to pick them up. I had a problem with the glasses and called to make an appointment to have them checked. I had to call and leave 3 messages to finally get a return call after almost a week. The glasses were redone and I still cannot see properly. I have now made 3 calls since 9/22 and still have not had the courtesy of a return call. I understand that with the covid situation that they must limit the # of people in the waiting room, but not returning a phone call in almost a week is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect for their customer. Been going there for 15+ years - regular annual eye checks, then cataracts and then macular degeneration with a retinal vein occlusion. Woke up blind in left eye. Was seen immediately and referred to Dr. Kaplan for injection that morning. Never have had to wait more than 15 min. to be seen. Staff is courteous, knowledgeable and fun. Dr. Kaplan is reassuring, calm and extremely experienced in his field. Explained my issues completely in terms I could understand and answered all my questions. We had appointments scheduled with them, they called and cancelled the appointments saying the person was no longer employed there. They rescheduled the appointments for late in December. Then they called again and cancelled the second set of appointments saying this person wasn't available and were rescheduling for April 2024. We mentioned that this would prevent us from using our vision insurance coverage for 2023, their attitude was "oh well". Also, we originally requested to see an ophthalmologist and were told they don't see patients unless there's a specific issue. read more

This place is absolutely horrible. I'm not writing this to be mean; I just want to help people avoid the same terrible experiences that I've had there. Here are my issues with Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants: 1. Disorganized. The doctor has ordered the incorrect prescriptions for contacts not once, but twice. My contacts are $630 a year, so this is incredibly stressful. The past two years, I've had to call the office after my appointments to correct my contact prescriptions. The first time, I accepted this as a mistake, but now I know it's just laziness. 2. Rudeness of staff. Many of the receptionists here are incredibly rude and trashy. I had an appointment on Friday and walked up to the front desk, where a middle aged man was waiting to check in. He politely waited while the receptionist did not look up at him once. After a few minutes of silence, he asked, "Is this check-in?" She made a face and him and said, "Uh, yeah. I was just finishing doing something." Totally unprofessional and completely rude for no reason. They literally treat patients like trash. One of the receptionists, who helped me check out, was incredibly kind and polite. I wish I knew her name to include it in this review because interacting with her was the only positive part of my experience at this place. 3. Overbooked. The last time I had an appointment, it was scheduled for 12:45 and I didn't get taken back until about 1:30. I get that places are backed up and COVID has made everything more difficult and time-consuming, but this was completely ridiculous. Also, the office called me twice to reschedule my appointment. I had to pay over $200 for contacts to wear before my appointment because I had run out of my yearly supply. They also take forever to answer their phones. They're completely overbooked. Needless to say, I'm looking for a new eye doctor. Please save yourself the IMMENSE amount of trouble and go somewhere else, for your own sake. read more

I could have written any of these bad reviews that speak to the poor management of the scheduling of appointments. It's difficult to tell if the root cause is actually the providers' unavailability, the scheduling department's inexperience, or both. I was already a patient and had my normal annual checkup set when I left the office in 2021. I later received a call saying we had to push it out and it got rescheduled to be about 5 months after the initial date. Since I wasn't having any issues I didn't mind much. I think it got rescheduled again in this time period pushing it close to 2 years out. A couple weeks before that date, that I had coordinated to be the same day as my husband's, they texted and called to say their usual, "Hello this is Delaware Ophthalmology. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we need to reschedule your appointment. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please call us at 302-479-3937 to reschedule. Thank you." My husband called that day and got his appt set up for 5 weeks later-which he did get seen for. When I called the next week the only thing available was 9 weeks later. Three weeks before that appt, I received a text message and phone call again saying the "usual". I called and left a message that I was very unhappy and now having vision changes I needed to address. I got a voicemail back saying "It's all a mistake. You still have the appt as scheduled. Please ignore any other message". I received confirmation texts twice in the next 2 weeks including 4 days before the appt. I ALSO received 2 texts in the week prior saying the appt had to be rescheduled but NO phone call. I called the day before the appt to inquire about these texts with conflicting messages. I left a message and their return voicemail confirmed the provider will not be in the office and I had to rescheduled. According to my calendar, we may now be at 3 years from my last check up. This is no way to run a medical practice. read more

Late March 2018 I was having an issue with my left eye (I could only see out of the upper part of my eye). Called my doctor and was told they couldn't see me until late the following week. My mom was a patient at DE Ophthalmology and I thought I would give them a call. Not only did they get me in ASAP, they did everything they could to find someone who would operate on me as I had a detached retina. This year I had a cataract removed and was pleasantly surprised when the doctor called me not only the night before the operation he also called the night of the operations to see how I was doing. The staff and doctors are awesome! BTW I have never used the optical as I have found cheaper places to get glasses. read more

I Called in the morning because I had an issue with my right eye and the scheduler was so quick to help me same day and accommodate my work schedule. So I went in for my appointment at this location after going to Greta Steinbach for years. The first short blonde hair lady seemed more into straining her tea than helping people but the lady next to her jumped right up to help me and was awesome. Greta wasn't available, so I saw (no pun intended) Dr. Young. After being evaluated by a nurse, Dr. Young called me back and immediately figured out that I had a piece of plastic embedded on the inside of my upper eyelid. I had been dealing with it for over a day and it was such a relief to get it out. I can be such a baby when it comes to my eyes but Dr. Young I can't thank you enough. The doctors at the Sliverside office seem interested and capable. The problem is the management of staff members, who seem to do everything possible to stand in the way of one's eye health. When my husband had surgery there we were barely out of the parking lot when he received a call to remind him that it was critically important that he fill his prescription and begin using it immediately. When we got to his pharmacy (Walgreens, which was just around the corner) they hadn't received the prescription. We waited, but it didn't come. We returned to the office to see what happened and received an "oopsy!" response that they'd sent the prescription to the Walgreens on the other side of the city. It turned out that they didn't. He spent a couple of hours trying to track down the prescription, which it turned out was sent to CVS (which his insurance doesn't cover). When he asked them to resend it to Walgreens it was denied because the prescription was already filled at CVS. Today I was there for an OCT test that was scheduled a year ago. After waiting for 45 minutes I asked a woman at the counter if there was a problem with my appointment. She was unfamiliar with the layout of the office and didn't know where the OCT room was. She asked a fellow staff member for guidance. We got to the OCT room where a patient who arrived significantly after I did was being seen by a technician. I was told that I could go back and wait in the waiting room. It seems no one bothered to tell the technician that I was there when I arrived. This place needs an office manager who can manage in order for patients to receive appropriate treatment. read more

I've been a patient for 32 years. That says a lot. Dr Jamie W & (my) Amanda F are my favorites, although over 30 years, I have good feelings about all employees in all 3 locations (Silverside, Limestone, & Middletown). Here are a few reasons I love & stick with this firm. I have unusual eyes with loads of rare complications. Jamie actually physically uses her special kit to build my glasses. Literally. If you have rare, or any eye issues, see Dr. Jamie W. Amanda F works in the glasses area. I have known her for ages. While being aware of my special eye issues, she not only helps me select glasses, but knowing me and my problems, she selects glasses as she travels between all 3 locations that she knows will work for my prescription and that she knows I'll like. I can't say enough good things about DOC. I highly recommend! read more
