I have been her patient since she bought this business. I would recommend her particularly to families who have children in need of eye care. It appears that her practice is well stocked with frames for all ages. Recent encounters were to determine whether it was time for cataract surgery for me, and follow-up care after the surgery. Overall, both I and my husband have been with her for about 15 years each, and she has never given either of us reason to consider going elsewhere. read more

A Tale of a Neurotic, Arrogant Doctor and her Rude, Militant Staff I've been going to this doctor's office for over a decade, and Dr. Amy Farrell has always been cold and neurotic. Her staff is equally unpleasant and rude, but I stuck with the practice because they generally have open availability (now I see why) and it's a hassle getting acclimated with a new doctor. These are some of the unbelievable things they've done over the years: -Refuse to give patients their own PD (pupillary distance) because they don't want you to order cheaper glasses and contacts online. Most eye doctor's offices don't withhold their own patients' information because it's a patient's right to know. We're paying them, and it's information about us. But Dr. Farrell is so greedy, she holds your PD hostage because she wants to bully you into ordering contacts and glasses from her practice. (Thank goodness Costco's more reasonable, and doesn't pinch pennies. I was able to go there and they gave me my PD without a problem. I should have honestly switched everything to them after this experience). -Another shocking thing this practice has done is refuse to schedule you at all if they feel you aren't in "compliance". Compliance?? Compliance with what??? Patients are not your employees. All this means is Dr. Farrell likes to refuse service to people who haven't been to her in two or three years, because she knows they've been spending money elsewhere. I've never heard a doctor say a patient isn't in compliance with something when simply scheduling an appointment, and my friends and family haven't either. If a patient hasn't been able to schedule an appointment for a couple of years, that's because life happens. It's strange and vindictive for a doctor to turn away a patient simply because they haven't been able to update their glasses and contacts. I've been wearing my old prescription for a few years, which is PRECISELY why I needed an appointment. Who knew that'd be the very reason I was denied one. Kind of seems like a catch 22, doesn't it? That's literally what eye doctors are for. Long story short: I'm happily getting a new doctor that won't police me and hold my personal information hostage simply because they want to bully me into spending more money with them. If you don't want to deal with a power hungry doctor and her unpleasant staff, I suggest you go somewhere else too. Ten years with this practice, and this is how they reward loyalty. A scheduled my appointment just going off of places that were close to me that my insurance covered. The person I spoke to over the phone was incredibly polite and scheduling was a breeze. Right before my appointment I checked the Yelp reviews and was surprised to see so many one star reviews. But, what could I do? It was an hour before my appointment. I started off strong by going into the wrong eye center. There are two places essentially next door to each other with very similar names. The first eye center was incredibly busy, and it took them 20 minutes to even notice that I didn't have an appointment. There were about 10 patients waiting and two very busy staff members trying too manage them. However, when I walked into Vision Center it was completely different. First of all, the place has a lot of charm. It has very eclectic decorations with a few interesting displays. There were 3 staff members ready to greet me and only other other patient waiting. I was helped immediately and promptly and was able to see the doctor right away despite being over 20 minutes late. Everyone was super friendly. Dr. Farrall was *incredibly* nice. It was really a pleasure getting treated by her. I have no complaints at all. The appointment was prompt, went smoothly, and I didn't feel rushed. Although I didn't have any questions she asked me several times if I did and seemed genuinely interested in caring for me. I don't write a lot of Yelp reviews, but I felt compelled to write one for Vision Center. First of all, it is clear that this is a small business and I appreciate patronizing locally owned places. It's nice to go somewhere with some character and style rather than some sterile national place. Second, I have to believe the many one star reviews here are bots, a competing business, or some unsatisfied customer with an axe to grind. Dr. Farrall and her staff were all so extremely nice and attentive that I find it hard to believe all the other experiences about rude office staff are true. If they are true, then they must be outdated, because I interacted with all three staff members at the front and they were over the top nice and accommodating. I'm a Vision Center customer for nice now. In part because of how nice the staff and Doctor are and in part because I really enjoyed the charm of the office. Unprofessional. I received a call confirming a Monday appointment on the Thursday before. Then Friday at 4:35 I receive a phone call stating that my doctor is no longer in network for some reason and they are in the process of re-establishing that contract so they need to reschedule. I let them know that I work at a school and I do not have the flexibility to come in whenever so I anticipate that they will be able to work with me since this appointment was scheduled a year ago. No, they couldn't. They offered me an appointment 7 weeks out. 7 weeks. After I asked how they could work with me considering my appointment was just confirmed yesterday, I had it scheduled for a year, and this was their issue, not mine. But nope, they had an availability 7 weeks out. Unprofessional and inconsiderate. **Edited to include update: I was informed Friday at 4:35pm before a Monday at 10am appointment. This was not a change in my insurance. I have had this insurance for over 1 year. I was informed that it would be 2 weeks to resolve their issue with their credentialing, not 7 weeks. read more

Our family has been going to Dr. Farrall for years and have always been pleased with the excellent care we have received. She is thorough and dedicated to each patient. She takes her time with you, let's you ask questions and really cares about making sure you understand. Her bedside manner is relaxed and caring... excellent for anyone with anxiety about going to the doctor. read more

My husband and I have been going to the Vision Center of Delaware for the last 3 years. My brother has been our eye doctor forever but since he is 6 hours away from us and my husband's eye pressure needs more closely monitoring, we decided to start using someone close by. I also don't like to buy my frames from him because of distance but he always feels like he has to give us everything at cost and won't take our insurance. While we pay less, I feel bad. I have been underwhelmed by the customer service, help with picking frames as well as the wait to see the doctor. The only pair of frames I have bought are my least favorite and I ended up going back to using my last pair I bought before using VC of DE. I was also a bit taken aback when I had an eye exam less than 1 year after buying new lenses and they just assumed that I would be buying new frames and were disappointed when I said I was not. While I understand insurance somewhat, my husband is starting a new job with better benefits than what we currently have so we have held off getting his new lenses. I called today to ask if they could do a quick look at our current insurance and compare it to the new option we have so I know which company we should take. The person on the phone put me on hold a couple of times only to come back and tell me that her manager told her that my husband would have to go to the office for them to give this information. When I asked why, after all its my insurance at this point and I am just looking for a quote. I was told that its time consuming for them because they would have to call the insurance company. When we have gotten glasses or lenses before they just look up the program in their system...I was shocked at the lack of customer service. I was left to call the new insurance company and beg for information however I am not 100% sure it is accurate so now I need to make an uninformed decision. What I do know is that I will be looking for a new eye doctor with better customer service. read more

I love Vision Center of Del. The ladies here are so sweet! It's nice to see people actually enjoy what they do for once. I've brought my son in there several times to have his frames adjusted. They always talked to him at his level, taking their time to explain everything thoroughly. Which makes him feel super special. My family and I have seen both doctors, both were amazing! Everyone at Vision Center has been so kind. They have a wonderful way of making people feel important. I came to get new prescriptions for my glasses and decided never to come back. The receptionist was very rude when I asked about the insurance coverage. After answering my questions in a very condescending way, she turned away before I even got a chance to follow up. The technician was incompetent. After failing to take my blood pressure, she brushed if off and told me I didn't need blood pressured taken since "You look healthy". My interaction with the doctor (Stella) was fine until the end when I asked her what my prescription was. She told me it was different with my current one but refused to tell me what the new one was. She basically said "You will see it later at checkout. Or do you want me to read it out to you?" After I told her I wanted to hear it from her, she still didn't want to tell me what it was, she said "Well, I can tell you that it is worse". After I asked the third time, she finally told me and asked "Does it make sense?". I wondered why she thought the two simple numbers in the prescription wouldn't make sense to me. It was definitely very strange. I definitely wanted to discuss the results of my eye exam with the doctor and not the receptionist. I will never go back. read more

Worst office staff I've encountered. I called today, confused about why I was sent the wrong prescription and explained that I have been out of town for weeks due to work (which I explained the last time I called as well), but instead of walking me through it, or at the very least - listening to why my situation was more complex than they thought, the person raised her voice and said: "Listen, that is not how it works!" I don't know about you, but that tactic rarely leads to a good exchange. Assuming best intentions is not something this staff is good at, and neither is explaining rules around what they will and will not cover. The main doctor is usually pretty good, but the last time I went there, another doctor did my exam and made a mistake. When I called in to ask for a re-check, Dr. Farrall acted weird, like it was my fault the other doctor didn't know what she was doing. Then, a year later there was an issue with my coverage and Dr. Farrall had the nerve to bring up the previous year's mistake again, as if her staff's mistakes were my fault. Instead of just hanging up, she proceeded to tell me what she thought was psychologically affecting me, and condescendingly told me how I should stay on top of my coverage (as if I'm the only person on the planet who is confused about insurance lol), so I left the call looking for a new doctor. Bonus question for anyone to answer: when your eye doctor's office says a prescription expires in 12 months and is only good for a year's supply (365 days) and you only use your contacts during the week (not weekends) and order new contacts a week before expiration...why wouldn't you be able to fill it? AVOID! Sorry for the long review but it's worth the read. I really should have done more research before deciding to go here. The receptionist came over when I was filling out the paperwork and said "Are you done yet?" Can you see that I am still working on it? The first girl who took my blood pressure/ preliminary tests was nice, no complaints. It wasn't under Dr. Farrall came in that the mood changed. She was unpleasant to say the least. She was extremely condescending in the way she talked to me, for no apparent reason. She talked to me as if I was a child. She told me the brand of contacts I use is basically obsolete. Meanwhile, I've been prescribed this brand for years and its worked for me, but to her I'm not "up to date on contact technology". She also told me the eye drops I use once in a while are like putting cough medicine in my eyes (maybe she should inform her assistant who told me she also uses the same eye drops). When she looked in my eyes, she accused me of abusing my contacts (I don't?) And wouldn't even proceed with my exam. She said my eyes were irritated and I needed medical attention, and told me I needed to come back in a few days. No explanation, and she even seemed angry like I wasted her time by having an issue with my eyes. She even went so far as to say "You just have to wear glasses now, I know it sucks and you don't look as good". Excuse me? If she had been nicer and less arrogant, I may have considered her recommendation and went back for the exam. But after reading these other reviews, paired with her attitude, I'm opting to drive two hours to my old doctor for a REAL and professional eye exam. UPDATE: After I cancelled my "follow up" visit, I received a call stating that they had to cancel my prescription for my eye drops because I'm "not being seen there again". No other explanation. It wasn't until the office manager, who must have learned her people skills from Dr. Farrall, told me that a follow up is necessary to check if the drops worked. You would think a professional doctor would say we are sorry for any confusion or miscommunication at the office, etc. but we urge you to get this taken care of and come back to our office. Well, long story short, I ended up going to the UD Student Health Center, which has a wonderful, professional staff. The doctor there explained exactly what was going on and what I needed to do. So I paid $20 to be insulted by Dr. Farrall, and $0 to receive adequate medical treatment and respect. It's just too bad that the office couldn't show their patients some respect, because I might have returned for a follow up, eye exam, contact fitting, etc. but I guess they didn't want my money. read more

While the office can be chaotic at times (noted by other reviewers), I have only received good customer service from the front staff, glasses staff and eye technician and Dr. Farrall herself. read more

Very friendly staff. I have been going to the Vision Center of Delaware since I started wearing contacts and I don't have anything negative to say. The doctor's are very professional and make sure the patients best interest are in hand. The doctor's are straight forward and make sure your contacts work for you, while also being up to current industry standards. I wouldn't give any stars but had to give at least one. My husband and I had a 4:00 appointment. Initially we went to the wrong office just next door at 3:35. When the very nice staff at the wrong office figured out that we were most likely supposed to be next door, they showed us exactly where to go and said we could remain parked in their lot. We arrived at Vision Center of Delaware at 3:50. The receptionist was on the phone, so I signed us both in and provided our email address and proceeded to seats in the waiting room. At 4:20 I went back to the receptionist and asked how much longer would it be for our 4:00 appointment. She said she would check in just a second and went to speak with someone else near our seat. I checked the time on my phone to see there was a missed call and voicemail from Vision Center. The voicemail said we missed you today for your 4:00 appointment and since it's after 4:15 your appointment will need to be rescheduled! I proceeded back to the receptionist as my husband was walking out the door to tell her I didn't miss my appointment and we were there before 4:00 and signed in. When I asked her if she even checks the sign in sheet she said yes! Not thinking she does and we will not be going back. What a cluster you know what to leave work early for! read more

I would never go back to Vision Center of Delaware 317 E Main Street Newark Delaware. Refused our insurance Cigna Health Spring that comes under Superior Vision that covers eye exams. They are under contract with My insurance company. Also i called my insurance twice and were told they were on the list. The receptionist kept saying we do not take that insurance. I went home called our insurance again and they said that they take Superior vision. I called the vision center again and told the receptionist again she refused and asked my age and i told her i was on medicare and she said that it was under medical. I told her my insurance said they were suppose to except my insurance and she said maybe they might pay something toward glasses. I think she was discriminating against Seniors and she just didn,t want to look up ..Superior Vision. and my name and my husband name would have come up Went to another eye doctor and never had a problem. She went right on the website punched in our Id number and our names came right up DISCRIMINATING AGAINST SENIORS Do not go to that business. read more

I was very pleased with the service I received. Had an exam and decided to get contacts this time around. They explained everything thing I need to know about wearing contacts. They really knew their information. Opted to go for the Air Optics Colors because some of the staff uses that brand, so I was able to see how vibrant the colors are. I have been waiting since August for my glasses to come in. Repeatedly told "they will be in this Tuesday". They actually came in at one point... but prescription was wrong so they had to send them back out. It is October 29th .. still no glasses. The staff was friendly and helpful during ordering; but do not seem to follow through. It shouldn't take me calling to check on the status of my glasses, they should be checking with their lab regularly to see if there is a problem. As far as their "on-site lab"; seems they can only make specific prescriptions with specific insurances; everything else... they send out just like any other place. I do NOT recommend this business for getting glasses, especially if you need them relatively soon. End result... I was offered a refund.... that's it. Nothing for the months of waiting. Good customer service would have offered a refund($300+) plus my glasses for free... if they ever come in.... Very surprised by this level of service right on Main Street near the University of Delaware. read more

AVOID!! UNPROFESSIONAL STAFF EVER!! Over charged me after insurance covered all except my deductible. Upon my new visit today, front desk staff girl brought up these charges and demanded I pay before being seen today. She refused to show me a break down of what insurance had not paid until I kept asking to see it.m which was very strange and had an attitude immediately upon all this...I was unsure of these charges and sat in the waiting area on the phone with insurance for almost an hour as they would not treat me until these payments were made. Insurance company assured me these charges HAD been paid!!. The front desk girl (Denise) was snarky and rude and doctor (Amy) even came out and falsely accused me of being aggressive with her in a previous visit???!! I came in with a severe allergy to eye drops and terrible inflammation and was distressing my concern and being upset by it but never once was my voice raised or angry with her...she accused my eye concern and distress for being aggressive?? I guess she was saving face and defending Denise..I don't know but the WORST experience ever today!! I was beside myself that their communication towards me and lack of care for my emergency visit was not a priority but overcharging me and making me pay this huge balance before I was seen was a bit ridiculous to me. One hour invested in their office today and was not seen at all...I never once received a bill from insurance either so I'm not sure what these guys are pulling . Later Denise comes out with a proper bill that showed that the insurance DID pay for said services after all this escalated...Their staff is poorly trained.
