My friends and I did takeout at Della J's. We shared the Jumbo Wings, Shrimp Po Boy, and Fried Catfish. Our sides were the mac and cheese, collared greens, fries, corn, and coleslaw. The Po Boy was delicious with the creamy sauce. The veggies and coleslaw helped balance the fried shrimp. The sandwich bread is pretty thick though so we had bread leftover because it was hard to taste the shrimp otherwise. The catfish was cooked perfectly but it was a bit too salty for me. The coleslaw helped counterbalance the salt. Surprisingly, I wasn't super impressed by the fried chicken. Don't get me wrong, it was good fried chicken but I wasn't blown away and there wasn't anything special to it. All the sides were great! I usually don't like collared greens but Della J's is really good. The fries were soggy but that could have been our fault. We picked up our order 15-20 minutes after it was ready - I'm sure if we had it right out of the kitchen, they would have been great. I live about 25 minutes away and I don't think I would go out of my way to order at Della J's again, but if I'm in the Springfield area and am craving some good southern food, Della J's would be a great pick! Della J's Della J's. Late with this review but nonetheless here it is. This place is in a small strip mall cant miss it. When I came the owners were there and greeted us immediately. The waitstaff was also super friendly and the owner came frequently to our table. Finally a good not so pricey southern place. Overall the food was good kinda expected more with everybody raving about it. But then again I came last December in the first few weeks? months? of opening not sure. I ordered the potato skins as an appetizer and they werent so fresh. Had alot of "rotten" bits of potato. Also ordered wings and they were tender and juicy but bland. What I did really enjoy was the fish. Loved that the fish was seasoned well but not overboard. I'd go back for that or maybe the happy hour to try something different. read more

Nearly impossible to find decent soul food this side of the river. Eight hundred places to get mediocre sushi, but no decent fried fish. I end up crossing the bridge to get my fried whiting fix. Stopped in on a late afternoon Friday and the crowd was pretty thin except for a few ladies at the bar who were getting their drink on. Ordered the fried whiting, collards, and mac & cheese. The fish was fried perfectly crisp and not greasy, the mac & cheese was tasty, and the greens were perfectly seasoned. I usually ask for hot sauce or hot pepper vinegar for collards, but this needed neither. I wish I'd ordered some cornbread to soak up the pot likker. Generous portions as well; I ended up taking the leftovers home. For under $20 you can stuff yourself here. Looking forward to trying the deep fried porkchops because, again, difficult to find in this neck of the woods. Highly recommended. read more

We've been Coming to Della J's for years but going this year on Juneteenth was even more special. Della's is the perfect combination of amazing food and great customer service. First timer. Ordered via Uber Eats. Catfish, cabbage and blackened chicken were all fire...yes Gawd! The smoked bbq chicken was cool. You could taste and smell the smoke. Collards were good but a bit salty. I made some cornbread and mixed it to mask the saltiness. I ordered their cornbread but it wasn't sweet enough and was a little dry to me. I'd definitely pass on those and the mac. Overall, it was a pleasant surprise to find a soul food spot near my house. The 3 sides plate was like $15. A bit pricey but that's Northern Virginia for you. I'm not a fan of lemon pepper but the fries were seasoned to perfection. I'm a Mississippi girl so I know good soul food when I taste it. I'd order again. Update: I ordered a few days later but went to the spot for pickup. When I tell you walking in felt like home. The pictures of legacy on the wall was like looking at black excellency. The guy working the front was sweet as pie and they were cranking out orders. Of course I did not deviate from the catfish. Because...I mean...why Craig. My son got the fried shrimp. I was skeptical at first how only 6 shrimp would fill him up but unlike other places their jumbo shrimp really are JUMBO! My visit at Della Js was on 8/22 when myself and a friend tried them out. I was upset with myself as I have been sleeping on this place for some time now. I have been told by my sister and others how good they were, but now I can personally endorse them myself. Staff was friendly (Sasha was great), attentive and offered good recommendations. I had the grilled salmon w/ lemon butter sauce, Mac and cheese and the veggie of the day: green beans. I also had the cornbread (yum), sweet tea and banana pudding. My friend had pork chops and collard greens which were equally good. The place is clean and inviting. Since they moved to Richmond Hwy now they are closer to me! We had an opportunity to dine at this establishment on Sunday afternoon around 12:30pm. The lovely woman at the front was not the most organized but she was pleasant. We were seated after a 10 minute wait time. Our server was the most delightful young woman. She was well versed on the menu items and we received our drinks almost immediately. This is where it fell short for us- it took too long to receive our food! The server placed an order for our brussel sprouts when she retrieved our drink order. It was over 15 minutes before they showed up so we assumed our entrees would be coming out shortly thereafter. Nope- the entrees took over 25 minutes to come out and our server kept coming to the table to apologize for our wait time. None of the fish on either order were hot so we don't know what happened there, but the sides were hot and delicious. My husband's entrée was incorrect in that he ordered fried shrimp on his fish platter and they gave him steamed. It was corrected but again it took too long to come out of the kitchen. We also were not able to get any dessert because they had pretty much ran out of every dessert except lemon and sweet potato cake. It was only 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon and the place was not full, meaning the church folks hadn't been dismissed from service yet, so where were the desserts. Note for the next time we visit- order dessert with the entree to ensure getting what you want. We will return because it's comfort food and the sides were delicious. We were thanked by the woman at the front desk who was exhausted I guess because she was sitting on the bench with the patrons...hilarious! I am trying this February to support more black-owned business but I really want US to finetune some things if you want to attract more clientele. read more

Upon recommendation from a friend, I ordered a catering item from Della J's. The Pineapple Chicken was a beautiful and delicious addition to our colleagues retirement party menu. The chicken skewers were a hit with the party guests and the peanut sauce was flavorful. The Della J's staff were professional, provided delivery and arrived early. Response to the owner of Della J's- the server did give us the option of white or wheat bread, I don't recall what the menu stated; however, white or wheat can be in a roll or bun also, not just square, sliced bread. I'm unsure how many customers prefer sliced sandwich bread for a fish sandwich over a nice, buttery roll or bun. I didn't realize your brunch options were different from regular lunch options, I will do my research next time. I'm unsure how many sides the entrees are supposed to have as we both received one each, which is why we ordered additional sides. If two sides comes with an entree, then the server made a mistake. We were on our way up to MD for a wedding and we decided to hit up this place because of the reviews that we read and because it was on the way. I think we may have gotten them on an off timing of the day. The place looks beautifully set and we were seated quickly. I ordered the meatball sliders with a side of their mac and cheese, since we were going to be eating a lot more at a wedding that evening, as my hubby ordered their Jumbo Fried Chicken Wings with a side of collard greens and potato salad with egg. The sliders were bit dry on my end which I didn't finish, but their mac and cheese was pretty good with a sprinkle of hot sauce on it. The fried chicken that my husband got was pretty good. It was not dry and the seasoning was quite delish. The sides were pretty good but didn't stand out as much. I just Overall, the whole experience was not bad. Perhaps the proportions of cheese were off in the batch I had... Maybe there should be 2 versions of mac n cheese. Had an amazing brunch here with my bestfriend on a nice Monday! We got there right when the restaurant opened so it wasn't crowded at all. We were greeted by friendly servers and was seated right away. We had the chicken wing app to share. I ordered the plain wingettes with a ranch dipping sauce. I enjoyed it very much as the wings were made and cooked fresh with no excessive seasonings. It was crispy, and delicious! For my entree, i ordered the fried catfish sandwich. The catfish itself was HUGE and did not fit well in the bun - totally not complaining, more like, humble bragging :) The catfish was so flakey, and juicy, and just so well cooked! The brioche buns were delicious with every bite of the catfish. So simple yet this sandwich was everything i have ever wanted on a monday! The meal was delicious and was glad they had lunch specials, they had mainly their sandwiches and entrees on there so don't forget to look on that menu! I can't wait to come back to try their other dishes! People have mentioned on their review that the food takes a while to arrive at your table. I do agree with this, but i don't think it is unreasonably LATE. Ladies and gentlemen, the food was amazing. I felt like I was back down south at my grandma or auntie with the chubby arms kitchen. Potato Salad: It had the right consistancy, flavor, the eggs and onions made it a true southern potato salad. Mac and Cheese: Baked to profection cheesy and GOOD! Ribs: Not falling off the bone but YES, tasted amazing. Get ready for messy hands! Sweet Potato Pie: Not my favorite. Needed something. I think a little more sweetness. But not bad by any means. Amazing! The restaurant is nicely decorated with family photos and black history facts throughout the place. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and had excellent service for the duration of our time there. My friend and I ordered fried catfish with mac n cheese & collard greens. We ended our meal with sharing a slice of sweet potato pie. The food was absolutely delicious. (Make sure you try the tarter sauce!) There is also a bar if you want a drink. Very much your grandma's soul food that you don't wanna take the time to make at home because of the painstaking work of making things from scratch. They offer grilled versions of most meats, which I thought was a nice touch. Happy hour was reasonable ($5-7 for 6 or so appetizer items, and 12 or so cocktails PLUS wine and beer). I'd highly recommend the fried shrimp, and potato salad (I never like other people's potato salad, this one is GOOD). 4 out of 5 for the chicken biscuit. read more

I visited last Friday (3/31) with my mother, who recommended it from a previous visit. I went in with slight elevated expectations given her want for a return visit. So I had a hint there was something special about this place. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the hostess; friendly and welcoming. A very good start. We were quickly seated and greeted by our server, again friendly, warm and welcoming. We split and order and the Calamari and onion straws. The order came quickly. It was hot, beautifully fried and tasted great. Even the server that brought the app was friendly and playful. You could tell this was a n establishment that valued their employees and were treated like the family. For the main course, I got the Seafood platter; Crab cake, 2 jumbo fried (grilled is also an option) shrimp, a Flounder fish fillet and 2 sides of Potato salad and Mac & cheese. She got the (lump crab) Stuffed Salmon with mashed sweet potatoes and collard greens. Everyone meal is made to order. So, it takes some time but comes out hot and fresh. Simply put, I felt like a was eating a meal straight from grandma's kitchen. The fish was delicious and flaky. The crab cake had very little filler and noticeable chucks of crab meat and the shrimp, again, fried to perfection. The sides brought me back to those Sunday family dinners; it all tasted home made. The same can be said for the Salmon, greens and sweet potatoes. I highly recommend this place and would absolutely return to try everything their menu has to offer. What can I say about Della J's that probably hasn't already been said. I've been several times since I first learned about it 3 or 4 years ago. Before it moved to it's present location. I was happy to find out that there was a black-owned soulful restaurant in Alexandria VA!!!!! Everything I've tried so has been so good!!! Y'all lemon pepper wings are delicious!!!! I've been wanting to try this restaurant for over a year now & was excited when I realized I could finally try them out this evening. I placed a to go order over the phone and the young lady who helped me place my order was friendly and knowledgeable. I ran a bit late to pick it up and was worried I had potentially ruined my own dinner but to my pleasant surprise everything survived the extra wait- even the fried okra. Absolutely delicious food. We ordered a kids chicken tenders with fries, shrimp and grits (evening special) fried okra and Mac and cheese. We heard the owners wife made all the desserts on the menu and decided our day wouldn't be complete without trying the peach cobbler. It was all very good.
