I've been to another restaurant that CJ Cross opened, so had pretty high expectations for my first visit to Chalkboard, which opened two years ago. WHY DIDN'T I COME SOONER! Gregory, behind the bar, made us immediately feel like regulars. The bbq we tried reminded me of Dixie Pig in Brunswick, GA. Smoky, juicy, falling off the bone meat. The wings are insanely good - double fried, with options for different rubs and sauces. Pulled brisket was a standout too, but we also loved the pulled pork and pork belly burnt ends. The pricing is awful and the wings are not as good as they rant and rave about. I'm an Army Vet and I went there on a night that had some discounts for Active Duty and Vets on this board but I didn't see it until I made my order and I told the kid on the register who was up to his neck in tending the bar and trying to serve us that I was former Army from Fort Belvoir. He never told me they had discounts on that night and once I paid all that money, I walked around the place and read what was on the two boards and was PO'd. Customer service is great! Sat at the bar and was warmly greeted by the bartender. I went with The Duo. Apparently it didn't come with sliced brisket but rather pulled brisket. For the other meat, I opted for lemon pepper wings. I wanted ranch to go with wings but it never came out. For sides, I went with Mac & cheese, and brussel sprouts. Both of sides were great. The brisket was good. The wings were dry, lacked seasonings. The beverage of choice was Makers Mark and coke. It's a cool spot to was the NCAA Men's National Championship game. I've finally found my go-to bone-in wings place! Chalkboard does them right with a variety of wet and dry flavors ranging from mild and sweet to hot and spicy. They've got a little bit of everything for everyone. Located in a small shopping center, Chalkboard doesn't have a large amount of seating which helps with the local, cozy feel. The service is always great, and the servers are friendly, helpful, and genuinely want to get to know you. It's a local hangout spot to watch sports throughout the year or to just chill and enjoy some good food. Besides the wings, I've got to shout out the fried artichokes. I get these every time, and they make a great leftover when reheated in an air fryer. read more

I wish I could give this place a 10-star rating!!! I just came here on Tuesday since I heard they were giving out free dinners to Furloughed Government employees. First of all, THANK YOU!!! You provide a full free meal every Tuesday (during the shutdown) from 4pm - 8 pm and it is truly appreciated! Shout out to CJ the owner that is super friendly and loves to give back to the community. Also, a big shout out to Adian...Adian was also super friendly, nice and accommodating. I ordered the Smashed Burger with fries and a side of ranch. So good!!! Love the burger's flavor and the seasoned fires. Their ranch was soooo good and is made in house. I love establishments that are all about customer service but also have delicious food too! My search for Texas quality BBQ continues. We tried Chalkboard Wings and BBQ for Halloween lunch. It's in a shopping plaza with plenty of parking. Interesting and unique decor. It was a slow day with just a couple other people eating in. Service was great. He was very friendly and checked on us after food came out, refilled drinks. Unfortunately the food was a bit disappointing. The ribs were dry and covered in heavy sauce to hide it. I believe they were overcooked or perhaps from a prior days cook. The brisket was also dry as you can see in the photo. Maybe they had an off day but on our visit the bbq was not good. The sides were very good. Greens were delicious. Chalkboard has excellent real bone in wings. We chose the lemon pepper and plain. The sauces range from buffalo, garlic, barbecue, and hot. My boy got the brisket and grilled cheese and he loved it. I was looking for a neighborhood feel in a sports bar with uncommonly good wings. Light fare, wings, barbecue, and burgers go with sports and Chalkboard has it. The drinks are homemade. Infused jalapeños, and peach bourbon were excellent. Boomer is the right bar manager. She has wonderful stories. She personally infuses the liquors. Servers are attentive. The chicken nuggets were juicy, and the burger was delicious, especially with the fresh lettuce and tomato. Just went a couple of nights ago after doing an all day tour of DC, close to our motel, and we were hankering for some good BBQ (which sorry to say isn't all that easy to come by in Cali) my wife had the smoked pastrami reuben and brussels sprouts. We both loved her reuben and the sprouts, done with a bourbon, bacon, maple glaze were the best brussels I've ever tasted. I went for the 2 meat combo, brisket and pork ribs with sides of mac n cheese and greens. I can't find fault with anything. The ribs were perfectly cooked, just the right amount of pull, lean and a generous serving. Delicious mac and greens, the corn muffin was moist sweet and just right. Our waiter was helpful and friendly. It's obvious that they care about the product they put out there, plus 8 tv screens means you will not be missing out on any of the sports action. We're only sorry that we live about 2400 miles away as the crow flies. We have family nearby, so we will definitely be back in a year or so! read more

After settling into the Fort Belvoir area, my wife and I decided to venture out and see what was fairly local. Yelp had chalkboard wings rated fairly high so we decided to give them a try. We're very happy that we did! We open with adult beverages and an appetizer of cheese curds. The cheese curds were delicious on our beverages were as well! For our dinner, I decided on their buffalo chicken salad while my wife tried their side Caesar salad with Texas toast. Both salads were extremely tasty and fairly large! Today was Chalkboard's 4th Anniversary Celebration. They held it outside behind the restaurant, and the weather could not have been more perfect. Great beer selection (my personal favorite is Starr Hill Brewery Virginia Peaches), nice food selection (the burger is to die for!), cool small live band, canopies set up for shade, bar height as well as sit down tables, and welcoming family atmosphere. read more

I'm so disappointed. I really want to like this place. It's one of the few non corporate spots that feels like a local hangout spot. After my fourth visit I'm done. The first three visits the food was just OK. I've had all the main items including wings, brisket, sandwiches. It was all just OK but I kept coming back because I wanted to like the place. My last visit on Friday will be my last visit. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich. It was pathetic. A tiny tomato, scraps of red onion, no cheese or sauce. The real problem was the "chicken" was three tiny nuggets. Not a breast or thigh. Three tiny nuggets that came nowhere near the size of the bread. I showed it to the server and she immediately recognized how pathetic it looked. She came back and said "the kitchen said it matches the description in the menu." I couldn't believe it. Came in tonight on a Sunday evening and it wasn't too busy. We were greeted and got to pick our seats. It's not too big inside but fun atmosphere. Lots of tvs for games. Our waitress was good. The menu was what you'd expect. I liked the idea of trivia on thursdays. A good bar selection. A reasonably priced kids menu with real food. Our daughter loved her little smash burger and the quality was excellent. The portions were as big as ours with the fries. Fresh cut and delicious! My husband liked his platter and was very full. The BBQ they had was so good. I put it on my sandwich and it was phenomenal. The Mac and cheese was also good. It seemed reheated but it was still good.
