I was excited to see this place reopen on Instagram, so I stopped by. When I arrived, everyone was very courteous and friendly. I ordered an egg platter with grits, including sausage and two eggs, then stepped to the side to wait for my food. As I waited, I watched a young man prepare my meal in a three-section Styrofoam container. He only filled the back right section with grits, the smallest section, while the larger front section held the eggs and sausage. Considering I was charged $10, I expected more than just a quarter cup of grits, sausage, and two eggs. I did give this place an extra star because the lady at the counter was accommodating when I asked for a refund. While this might be a neighborhood staple, I'll pass on returning. read more

One employee in particular by the name of Charlie was quite popular as longtime customers piled in to say hello or catch up while he prepared an array of food items to include the fried foods. Mimi wanted to try the fried chicken breast (she loves chicken) and initially I was told there was a 15 minute wait, a customer ahead of me stated it's definitely worth the wait as he smiled. So having a free day off, I waited and I am so glad that I did! The chicken breast also has the wing attached and it's placed piping hot between two slices of "cheap white sliced bread". I was asked how I would like it so I responded as many others before me did: salt, pepper and hot sauce? I didn't know about Blue and White Carry Out until I visited the African American Museum down the street. Blue and White looked ramshackle but had a line waiting outside. The line reassured me. I ordered a fried chicken breast and wing dinner. It came with sides of mashed potatoes and gravy, and collard greens. The food seemed home-cooked and was absolutely delicious! Since 1963 I have been a customer at Blue and White Carry-out, 1024 Wythe St Alexandria, VA 22314. On October the 1st 2025, I purchased $30.00 worth of food from this establishment. After tasting the food, I called back to speak to a supervisor. Estell at Blue and White Carry Out answers the telephone and tells me the very first time, at 11:37 am, "I have to call Charles on his cell phone" and hangs the telephone up on me. Second time, I call back to ask for Charles cell phone number, at 11:35 am, Estell hangs the telephone up on me. Third time, at 11:39 am, I call back and now Estell YELLS LOUDLY AT ME, "NOW YOU HARASSING ME, WE BUSY"! and now Estell abruptly slams the telephone down on me. On October 1st, 2025 at 11:50 am I stop in Blue and White Carry-out and there, standing by the telephone, I politely asked Estell for her name. Proceeded next to talk to Charles and advise him that there is no flavor in the Salisbury Steaks, due to the onions being left out of their recipe now. There were only two customers in the store. Where Did Estell get harassment from? Why did that give Estell the privilege to hang the telephone up on me? Fried Chicken Sandwich. (1 star). Devil with a blue dress!!! Saddest part is blue is my favorite color. I feel so cheated and lied to!! I found it strange when I was asked, "Do you want a thigh or breast or wing"? Ummm what?? He added, "If you're hungry, get the breast piece". After my initial shock, I requested the breast piece. I walked back home and was ready to dive into my crispy, moist, flavorful fried chicken sandwich when I realized 2 things: 1) The bread was mushy. 2) My fried chicken still had TONS OF BONES in it. All they did was sprinkle S&P on a previously fried piece of bone-in chicken and slap it between 2 slices of bread??!! To say i was pissed off and disappointed would be an understatement. Most people don't expect to REMOVE BONES OUT OF THEIR SANDWICH??!! WTF. SERIOUSLY??? The fried chicken had a relatively crispy skin but definitely had the texture of being fried a few too many times. Very dry and tough to eat. It's not about the price to me, it's about the quality and pride taken in the food being served!! The only saving grace that this fried chicken sandwich has is that it is offered at 0530. I did come back 2 more times and ordered the pork chop (which still had the bone in it) and the hamburger steak sandwiches, but there is just nothing earth shatteringly delicious that makes me want to come back for more. I will say B&WC is extremely reasonable. I'm guessing that is why most people come here... You can get it plain or with salt, pepper and hot sauce (go with that!). I think the chicken is cooked in waves as there was a well-deserved 15 minute wait so please don't be in a hurry. There's no place to sit but the line moves well. I ordered a pork chop sandwich but since I got the last that was cooked for the day, I was only charged $1. Anywhere else and that sandwich is $3-$4 easily. My fried chicken dinner and pork chop sandwich came to a grand total of $6.50!!! Wow.....I'll be back for sure! The sides are nothing special but they are good. Mashed potatoes and string beans with my dinner were delicious. UPDATED REVIEW: (18 Dec 2019) I came here yesterday at 2:30 and it was closed. I could probably use 2 pieces of chicken for a full meal but no complaints. I'll be back! Street parking is easy around there and the post office is around the corner. I suppose you could get in that lot also. Eat the chicken quick. I've had it a couple times now and the skin quickly loses it's crispness covered with hot sauce (which I ask for) in that styro. container. Probably one of the oldest establishments still in old town. True soul food that the community keeps coming back for. My first experience was back in the early 90's. It's an inconspicuous hole-in-the-wall shack off of Wythe Street near Braddock Road metro station. And apparently it's been operating for more than 40 years, dishing out huge portions of Southern comfort good. When I walked in, I noticed worn counters and a single-file passageway to order and pay. However, the good food and witty enthusiasm of those working behind the counter are what keeps people coming back for more. The gentlemen behind the counter traded humorous and witty remarks with us as they prepared the food. I asked for a chicken leg/thigh with two sides of mashed potatoes. When one of them asked if I wanted salt and pepper on my mashed potatoes and spicy sauce on my chicken, I said yes and he said, "Oh yeah, the works! That's what I'm talking about." Very enthusiastic and easily loves his job. I love it. HUGE portion of chicken that was very tasty. Mashed potatoes were good as well. Best of all, besides the delicious comfort food and great sense of humor from the employees, was the price. All menu items are less than $5, including hefty dinner combos that include a choice of two Southern sides. Our order came out to be $9.
