    Kids Chicken & Waffle

I was craving chicken and waffles and this place had great reviews. I was mildly confused when we came because the restaurant isn't shown as southern on Yelp, it looks more like an American brunch joint. The name was also different posted inside. It was fine because they had what I wanted but just a note. I was confused. The inside is cute, they have a downstairs and upstairs seating area. The upstairs seems more upscale and the downstairs is more casual. Our waiter and I believe the owner were very generous. Our waiter gave great suggestions. The prices were high in my opinion, but the location also gives way to the high prices. I opted for the kids chicken and waffles because the regular one was expensive and offered four pieces of chicken. That seemed like a lot of food. However, the kids was not enough for me. If I hadn't ordered the side, I would have been hungry still. The chicken was fabulous and tender. The meat fell off the bone and the breading was seasoned great, very flavorful. The waffle was also perfectly crispy. I also ordered a side of green beans. The sauce and spice was delicious, however, I do wish the green beans were marinated and cooked more. The green beans were crunchy and I prefer more of a soft green bean. My boyfriend had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. The chicken was delicious and the spice they used was perfect. I also really enjoyed the seasoning used on the fries. The kids menu was ample and ours had the strawberry waffles. The plate was cleaned. Overall would come again!

I brought my daughter here for her 21st birthday! It was a very last minute decision as it was a work/school day for everyone so it was pretty late by the time we arrived. We arrived about 45 minutes before closing. The server had to get permission from the kitchen to serve us, which was understandable, as we had a group of 6. We were sat downstairs near the bar and served with very friendly service from Christian. They even brought out cake for the birthday girl and allowed us to have her open her gifts. Christian also assisted my daughter with ordering her first drink from the bar! The food we ordered was amazing! I got the bucket of chicken for myself and my 10 yo, while others at the table tried the shrimp and grits and some amazing side choices like brussel sprouts, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. I appreciate the wait staff, the cooks, and the management for making this day special for my girl especially at the last minute :) we will be back for more food and great service!

We visited here for a great brunch . It wasn't an extravagant brunch but a nice family style. Our waiter was so kind and gave great suggestions. Everything had so much flavor and I'd definitely return back.

The restaurant was really nice and modern. We had a reservation and it was really weird when we arrived. They made it seem like the had no tables and we had to wait to be seated. However, when we're sat upstairs, they had a ton of empty tables. Our waitress was ok, she brought us what we wanted, but she seemed rushed. She made me feel weird for ordering the peach tea cream soda, she described it and her attitude was "like sure if that's what you want". Maybe people are weirded out about that drink. When we had a different server, he was calm and polite. The food was good. We ordered the family style brunch. Tried the deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and the cornbread. My favorite and unforgettable favorite dish was the fried green tomatoes--so good! We ordered the biscuits and gravy, berry french toast, and shrimp and grits. I liked the gravy, the shrimp and grits had random shrimp tails. I don't know, I wouldn't order that again. The biscuits were dense and not fluffy. The French toast was ok. We also ordered chicken and waffles. That was delicious! I would do go back for chicken and waffles.

Five stars for this spot! The customer service was top-notch, portions were generous, and the bottomless mimosas were a perfect touch. Plus, they went all out with Halloween decorations--my favorite--so extra points for that! The fried chicken and waffles were truly exceptional, served in a portion big enough for two. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, with a flavorful, crispy batter that was just right. The Belgian waffle was light and airy, unlike the usual dense ones, with great flavor to match. I tried the bottomless watermelon mimosa, and it was fantastic; sampling all the flavors was a fun bonus. Can't wait to return--it was everything I'd hoped for! I'm excited to check out the DC location next. And shoutout to Isabella, our amazing waitress; be sure to ask for her!

I really wanted to like this spot...food was great, our server was attentive, and it was easy to locate off of King St. Towards the end of our dinner after we paid we noticed a mice running around the restaurant! We thought we only spotted one but there were two unfortunately. We brought it to the staff's attention and all they said was pest control was scheduled to come in a few days. I was sad about this only because we really enjoyed the food but seeing the mice really turned me off from the place.

Best shrimp & grits I've had in years, best I've had in the dmv for sure...

A few weeks back I stayed down in The National Harbor celebrating my sister-in-laws birthday with a few people. We had a great night going to Fogo De Chao and the casino and the next morning we wanted to find a brunch spot before we all headed in separate directions. I hit up Yelp for the hail mary and found this spot. My wife likes to put the pressure on me always telling people me being Yelp Elite (though I was stripped this year, after 9 straight because of whatever new system that was put in place this year. I was invited but, got an error when it asked if I accepted my elite status, and after being told things would iron themselves out, it didn't) Either way, after doing some homework we came here and had a great time. We got the family style brunch deal and bruh! This place is a little chaotic, but the food was excellent. The family style brunch is like 31.00 a person, and you can choose 3 starters/ family style dishes at a time unlimited. We had.... Deviled Eggs: smoked paprika, bacon, relish Fried Green Tomatoes: cornmeal breading, truffled arugula, cajun remoulade Southern Scramble: bacon, sausage, cheddar, fried green tomatoes Brussel Sprouts: halved brussels, bacon, truffle balsamic Crab Cake Benedict: jumbo lump crabcake, poached eggs, buttermilk biscuit, crawfish hollandaise, breakfast potatoes Shrimp & Grits: crawfish, tomatoes, scallions, shrimp broth, chicken sausage Berry French Toast: Vanilla-infused cornflake-crusted challah bread, strawberries, bourbon maple syrup, chantilly cream All of the food came out plated beautifully. The deviled eggs were so good, that I realized I haven't had any in years. They will now be invited back to the cookout. The fried green tomatoes were also good. I just wish they came with a side of the sauce that was drizzled over them, because it was really good. The southern scramble was probably my least favorite it's really just bacon and sausage cooked into a large portion of eggs with cheese, with 2 fried green tomatoes on the side. No sauce, or anything that would make you want to eat that much eggs ate once. It was just such a contrast from all the flavors in the other dish that it was hard to be impressed by it. I feel like it needed a bread or something else with it. The brussel sprouts are roasted just the way I like, but some thought it was too charred. I could've eaten them all day. The crab cake benedict & shrimp and grits were my two favorites. So much flavor and they don't skimp on the meat at all. Everyone's eyes at the table lit up when these dishes came out, a lot of lip smacking, and head nods of approval. We barely had room for the french toast, but it was also delicious. This whole brunch was a homerun. I wasn't aware that this was a black owned business when we came, but I was happy to be supporting them. You can tell that they really take pride in the food they're serving. My only regret is that I wasn't able to try the fried chicken that I kept seeing people order. By the time I realized that chicken came with the avacado toast it was to late, and we were on the way out. There were a few other large parties around us and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The staff was friendly and helpful, even with how busy this location was and I liked that even with all the big parties it didn't feel crowded. I can't wait to come back again for round two. This location is a true gem!

    Skillet Cornbread
    Tiffany S.

The cornbread had just the right amount of sweetness. I enjoyed that it came hot which allowed the butter to easily melt and spread. Ask for a little extra if you enjoy cinnamon butter. Was very moist and most importantly didn't have any corn kernels within!! The shrimp and grits were also good as well. The flavors were a little cajun flare but not overwhelming. I would get again but would have less juices added as I like my grits creamy but not soupy which happened. Make a reservation if you're trying to go on the weekend. Went on Sunday and bar seating was the only option.

I did the family style brunch for $32 a person, where you get 3 starter and 3 favorites. I think it's definitely worth the price. I mostly enjoyed the French toast, corn bread and deviled eggs.

Once again we celebrated our friends birthday at the best brunch spots in the DMV. The food is truly amazing. We were able to decide of starters and main courses prior to arrival which made everything so smooth. For starters we got the deliver eggs (high recommend), Caesar salad, and Brussels (please do not skip the Brussels!). For the main course we ordered the all time favorite, the pork belly. It comes with roasted potatoes and eggs. We also got the crab Benedict (you must get these) and the French toast. Everything was perfect. The service was great! Our waitress was so friendly and attentive. I can't wait to come back!

We came here on a Sunday morning with friends who live in Alexandria. We didn't have reservations but were sat without any wait. The host promptly informed us of a 2 hour max time for the table, which seemed a little odd especially given how many empty tables there were. We weren't there more than an hour, so it was fine. Our friend's son has a milk allergy and we appreciated the server's (I think his. Are was Tristan) attentiveness to helping clarify what was safe. He said the kitchen told him the chicken tenders didn't have milk but we suspected it was buttermilk battered like the other chicken dishes so we took off the coating in an abundance of precaution. We really enjoyed the food and I couldn't believe how big the chicken and waffles portioning was!

I've been to Hen Quarter twice for brunch. Both times I got the crab cake Benedict. It's not the best Benedict I've ever had but it does the job. I've also had the fried green tomatoes. This is a solid place of you're in Old Town.

Fried chicken, Mac and cheese, collards.

We spent the evening in Old Town recently with my daughter and her boyfriend. Seeing that her boyfriend is from Boston, we wanted to find some good southern food. Well, we found it. Hen Quarter, for those that remember, is where the Austin Grill once resided. The decor is very rustic and comfortable. Dress is casual and the wait staff was very attentive. We were seated upstairs, away from the bar area. For an appetizer, we had to go with the fried green tomatoes. I fashion myself as a connoisseur of this dish and Hen Quarter knocked it out of the park. They were hot, lightly fried and still had a bite to them. 10/10 on my FGT scale! The serving is eight slices; enough for each of us to have a few. I could have eaten all of them. For entrees, I had the blackened catfish over cheesy grits. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. The catfish was perfectly cooked and they give you a nice sized portioned of perfectly cooked grits. This was really good! Everyone else had the fried chicken. The chicken is served on a round butcher block which fits in perfectly with the decor. They all loved it and chomped it down to the bone. This is the spotlight dish and it was remarkable. The sides of mac and cheese, collards, mashed and green beans were ample and well done. The Mac and cheese was the only side that could use a bit more flavor, but it was fine. All in all, Hen Quarter has a great menu and the dishes are legit. We will be back to try some more of their wonderful entrees and more of those fried green tomatoes!!

I absolutely had to tag along because I knew after enjoying carry out from here a few weeks back, I needed to dine in. Older establishment. Not shabby but not chic either. Not a deal breaker tho'. Two thumbs up on everything food related! From the Margarita to the steak and cheese to the sweet potatoes to the lemon cake. Absolutely NO complaints. Would most def order again. Probably won't need to dine in again but definitely looking forward to carry out. Check out the pics of all of our entrées. Hoping you can share a similarly pleasing experience. From their tried and tested deviled eggs to their classic but with a twist Gochujang Tator Tots to their hearty Shrimp'N'Grits; the menu always has something that is sure to please each and every person in your company. My family and I enjoyed all of the dishes and we found that our selection of items was quite perfect for a group of three looking for a balance of savory and sweet. What we tried: The French Toast is crusted with cornflakes, making every bite a treat for the senses. I daresay that french toast should never be served in any other way. The crunch from the cornflakes elevates an otherwise humble dish and highlights the ingenuity of Southern cuisine: simple ingredients that when brought together deliver high impact results. The Shrimp'N'Grits was a delight. We have a dish similar to this which I insist the team at Succotash must try. It's called Kichuri; similar but different. This is perfect for those who prefer a savory breakfast packed with umami and flavor in every bite. Mr. Roger would definitely approve of this one. Potatoes are a universal favorite and thus Tator Tots were a must order for us. We didn't have any children with us but fried potatoes always satiates even the most picky of eaters. We did appreciate the integration of a gochugang aoili and pickled jalapeños. This elevated the dish enough to where it could be enjoyed by both adults and children. The Deviled Eggs are a no-brainer unless you are someone who hates perfection. They are the creamy dreamy accouterment to elevating one's daily protein intake and perfect wholesome addition to any breakfast or brunch. Not mentioned: I have had the Chicken & Waffles at Succotash and I still dream about it to this day. We did not have it in this visit because we decided to opt for more shareable items but the Chicken & Waffles is highly recommended. It's a complete meal: both savory and sweet. Probably the best post hangover meal.

She took us through the menu and explained how to order via the QR code. It's a small place with a few tables, bar seats, and a tiny kitchen. The whole time we were there people kept coming in for take out orders so we thought we might have to wait a while, but the food came out pretty fast considering. The food was amazing, I was brought back to my husband's grandma's table. You could taste the kitchen's soul in the food and let me tell you, it's warmth, love, and joy. We had the chicken and waffles, burger, catfish and grits, smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, fries, and corn bread and everyone cleaned up their plates. My husband and kids devoured the brownie trifle as I tried to protect the bread pudding like gollum his ring. We came in strangers, we left feeling we had found our home away from home. Thank you Jessica, we'll be back sooner than you think.

I love bread pudding, but this one just wasn't my favorite. It wasn't bad it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. The café itself is small, cozy, and welcoming. They have a small bar area, indoor seating, and a customer restroom that's tucked away in the back. When I stopped in, there were several people dining in, and it had a relaxed, homey atmosphere. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Down Home Cafe, especially if you're looking for a comforting brunch or a laid-back Sunday meal. I'll definitely be back for those chicken and waffles! Oh! An order includes 2 pieces, each of them a breast & sort of a small leg attached (yes, that sounds weird but it's the best description I can come up with). An order comes with mashed potatoes & gravy on the side + collard greens. We each took one piece of chicken home for a second meal. On the down side, we weren't keen on the fried green tomato appetizer. It consisted mostly of heavy breading. Next time we're going to try the catfish fingers instead.

While our server was great and very attentive, unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. For the evening we tried the Devil Shrimp which is crab stuffed shrimp that came with spinach and mac & cheese. While the stuffed shrimp were delicious the mac and cheese not so much. I hate to say this but it was a step up from box Kraft mac & cheese. The Grilled lamb chops were served with roasted fingerling potatoes and sauteed green beans. While the lamb chops were plentiful and we appreciated that, again the sides that accompanied the dish lacked flavor. To be an upscale Southern cuisine restaurant they missed the mark on some of the staples sides and that was a little disheartening.

So I said why not, and stopped here on a weekday (today) around 1:30pm. I ignored the fact that the tables and chairs outside the entrance were in disarray and walked inside. I looked around, noticing first a narrow hallway to my right with one small table and a snack bar. To my left were two more small tables. Loud music of an unrecognizable genre was blasting away. I was the only customer. It didn't look promising, but I figured I could order something and take it home. I looked up at the electronic monitor to see if there was a menu, but it just was displaying an outdoor scene. Then I noticed a woman sitting in the corner on a stool intently fiddling with her phone. She looked up, her face as blank as a refrigerator door and muttered something unintelligible (and certainly not welcoming) and pointed to the counter. She then went back to playing with her phone. Oh no you don't treat customers like that, and think you are going to make a sale. I left immediately, never to come back. Just a totally inhospitable ambience.

I stumbled upon Milk and Honey Cafe, intrigued by its menu featuring Southern staples like chicken and waffles and biscuits. From the moment I walked in, the customer service was warm and welcoming. And if you know anything about soul food spots, you'll know that sometimes a low-key or even gruff welcome is a sign the food's about to blow your mind, so the friendly vibe had me both surprised & optimistic. I ordered the cheese egg biscuit sandwich, which came in at $10. Let me tell you, the portion size was generous, definitely enough for two meals. The biscuit was fluffy, buttery, and had just a touch of sweetness, which paired perfectly with the savory cheese eggs. I always ask for cheese eggs when I eat out, and most places miss the mark. Not here. They got it exactly right. Coffee-wise, it was simple: basic drip with International Delight creamer. Nothing fancy, but honestly, it hit the spot and fit the vibe. The ambiance really sealed the experience. A smooth R\&B playlist floated through the space, adding to the cozy, feel-good atmosphere. It was a refreshing contrast to the more sterile, minimalist coffee shops I'm used to back home in Sacramento. All in all, Milk and Honey Cafe delivered on food, flavor, and feeling. If you're in the Alexandria area and craving soulful comfort food with a solid vibe, this spot is a must.
