Both my boyfriend and I have been wanting to go here for years, but it never seems to be open (that should have been our first sign). The awning outside the place has a really nice and modern design which is what interested us. We finally went today and only ordered two small coffees. I may have ordered a bite to eat but they never offered us a menu, and the pastries in the small case looked extremely unappealing. Plus, the space seemed disorganized, dirty, and hodge podge. To top it off, the coffee was terrible. Supposedly they roast their own beans here - and I would assume that anyone who takes the time to do this would have more care in the actual cup of coffee that they serve. It was pretty much hot water (with a slight hint of coffee taste). We literally ended up throwing both cups out and went elsewhere (not exactly how I want to spend my money from my tight budget). Sorry, but I would definitely warn others not to be fooled by the 'cover' of this 'book'. P.S. Don't even that going here as a substitute for Sweet Maple Cafe to avoid it line is a good idea (the lines are long there for a reason). read more

Went here for brunch one Sunday because the other nearby brunch spot was packed and had a long line. They didn't have a large menu, but I'm not one to complain about that. The food was....good....but nothing to brag about. I was just happy to fill my stomach, and it was about $10 each. I might eat here again, but the food really didn't exude any great vibe or have any special flavor that would make me crave it. read more

Visited this place last week sunday for breakfast. It should have been a sign that this place was not going to be good once we walked in. There was a few people in the restaurant and we waited to be seated. We waited 10 mins and no one came. A customer told us it was seat yourself. Once we were seated, my BF and I ordered 2 coffees, an omelet, and oatmeal. They NEVER brought my BF coffee, even after I reminded the staff. My BF was done with his omelet before i got my oatmeal. When I finally got my oatmeal, it tasted HORRIBLE! If we wanted ketchup, an extra napkin, etc. we had to go get it ourselves. If we relied on staff we would never get it. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! I normally get their breakfast sandwich with hashbrows to go, pretty good a bit greasy. Their chicken panini is very good, they put pesto in it and the flavor is amazing. It's a hole in the wall kinda place, I've also never had issues with how long it takes for my food to come out. Definitely check it out! read more

i love demitasse. i used to work at a little bookstore across the street, and i would stop in every day for a chocolate chip scone and the coffee of the day. both really, really good. the service is incredibly friendly...my only issue is that sometimes it took a little long when i was getting my stuff to go. i am always running a little late, and i need fast service. but i do think it's nice that it's a little more personalized and relaxed than your average starbucks. the stuffed french toast is soooo good, but get it to share! it's too much and too rich for one person. oh, and the art is all for sale. which is pretty cool, because they always have some interesting stuff. read more

I frequent Demitasse to cure those Sunday morning hangovers and when I don't feel like paying an arm and a leg for breakfast. I love the family-owned, friendly atmosphere and good vibes. Their fresh coffee always energizes me to tackle my Sunday strongly. I usually get the vegetarian breakfast burrito... it fills me up all day. I highly recommend this fine breakfast establishment. read more

I would say not too impressed. My fiancee and I ate breakfast here because there was too long of a wait at the first choice restaurant and I wish I had just waited it out. First of all, when I go to a restaurant and order a coffee you usually would expect the coffee pretty quickly. We waited quite some time and when I was finally annoyed enough to look up I saw our waitress behind the counter text messaging. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of my experience. Finally our coffees arrived and the food took even longer. I had ordered the special, 2 eggs, toast, hash browns and toast. When the food finally arrive, I must say, it was rather cold. The eggs had no flavor to them at all and there was probably ten little hash brown squares along with sausage that I believe came from a heat and serve package. The best part was the toast and that was only becuase I hadn't had rye toast in some time. I didn't feel that the price was even closely matched to what we ate. Maybe I would give it one more shoot just for the french toast everyone else seems to rave about, but that would be it. read more

Personally, I like the staff at Demitasse. Quirky, and fun. Also, I love all of their dishes! Everything always tastes fresh.The fritattas are awesome, and the pancakes are perfection! (The Italian Flag is my favorite.) If you like sweets, they have an amazing stack of french toast. Also, the Caprese panini is great for lunch. Add chicken for a nice touch. One of my favorite breakfast spots in Little Italy. I only have two critiques- better hot sauce options and faster service for refilling water/coffee. Aside from that, this place has great food and decent prices. The best part is the relaxed environment, a lot better than Hashbrown's and Stax Cafe's really crowded and loud environment. read more

Wandered into this place just because i was on taylor Street and needed to eat. It's one of those Chicago storefront spots which i like for their unpretentious, high-ceilinged space. my waitress brought me coffee and i said OMG! she came back and asked if something was wrong and was happy to tell her the coffee was sublime: after a refill I decided it was the best coffee i know of in Chicago. i go out of my way for good coffee and theirs beats any I currently know.. in fact, matbe the only better coffee place I knew of was a place on Michigan Avenue run by an italian couple but that place closed about 15 years ago. Whenever I am near this place I'm going back. I also had a good frittata with beautifully fried ( non-greasy, brown all over) potatoes and I see many complaints about service here but my service was polite, efficient and friendly. read more

I have gone to this place a few times because my friend lives near it. The food is really good, but it isn't worth the prices. I found them to be somewhat high. The look of Demitasse is cool, it has a nice charm to it with the checkered floor and booths, and the mural on the wall. The staff are nice people, you can see that they aren't very experienced, but I don't mind. The guy behind the counter is not the friendliest guy in the world (I've noticed other reviews on this, too), he tends to make unfriendly comments. I think that people should try it out, but it isn't a place to go regularly considering their prices and other factors. read more

Ate there this past Sunday...It was awful. There were about 6 people in there when we arrived. A table of 4 (already eating) and a table of two (just finished eating). We waited 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. I inquired about the cakes and the server said she didn't know. 10 minutes later she returned with an answer and the hardest piece of cake ever! She offered to microwave it to soften it!!! The other server, the thin one with the long dark hair and glasses spent most of her time playing grab a** with the men sha had already served. There was a rude man behind the counter, who walked away every time we tried to wave him over. The server took our order and never returned with the drinks but people kept rolling in. After 1/2 hour, I asked the very social server if she would get me some coffee and bring us our order of food that had been sitting up in the window for 10 minutes. She walked away without saying a word. She returned with one plate of food at a time. Finally brought some coffee and forgot the rest of the order-sides of bacon and toast. We were in there about an hour and a half trying to get our food. When we voiced our concerns, the socialite shrugged and walked away. The service was awful, the food was cold and the attitudes of the staff was glib. SAVE your money and go to SWEET MAPLE or MELI'S. There food is always delicious. We enjoy supporting local businesses and have been passing up Demitasse for a long while-we should have kept going! read more

where do i begin? giving 2 stars is being nice! i would love to come here before, as of the past two-months service was poor! recently, i saw my waitress twice, once when taking the order and once delivering the food(come on seriously was not even busy).we waited ten minutes at least for coffee alone. i've been a waiter for 9 years never gave service like this. its a coffee shop/ me and my mother got 1 cup each/no refill?? despite the fact we order "ham, egg & cheese crossiant(which i really love and is great), when are food was put in the window(we overheard the waitress even ask is there ham in here; cooks; yes),then are food was delivered my mother and i did not check are sandwiches yet(we were enjoying the house potatos)(which got smaller), then i assume the cook? comes out with the "smallest 4 pieces of ham" places on the table and says "we decided to play a joke and not put ham". immediately she "walks away", seriously did this just happen???(the ham was dry,microwaved and horrible.... i will not be returning. its sad cause this place was truly good to me! thanks for the good times. next, time we will wait at sweet maple, or pay the extra dollar at stax café or even go to juts... sorry i was a valued customer:( service makes a big impact! read more
