The good: The food is very good and reasonably priced. One MUST try the Eritrean coffee, not just because it's fun to have the woman bring the roasting beans out to the table in a little copper kettle, but the way it is served and the flavor is really unique. The bad: Though extremely friendly, the waitress was clueless (I believe beyond limited English) ,even pointing at the menu was no help. In fact, nobody really spoke English. This normally doesn't bother me that much, but it is really a hassle when you don't get what was ordered as was the case for us. Also as of 2/4/2012 they are still unable to accept credit cards so I suspect that the "malfunctioning machine" is a ploy. read more

Definitely do NOT order through yelp/grubhub! This review is solely based on my not-so-excellent customer service adventure trying to find something to eat all day! So here goes: I started off ordering from my favorite Indian restaurant (Oberois) through yelp. About an hour later, I get a call from GrubHub saying that the place is not open, so they have to cancel my order. GH should have known that before I ordered, but ok, not a big deal. They emailed me a discount code for $25 for the inconvenience. Fair enough. SO, I figured I'd try some carry-out from Den Den. Again, I ordered through Yelp and gladly used my coupon code. Finally, I was getting some food...or so I thought. I was a bit suspicious because when I ordered, there was no estimate on the time it would take. Finally, I called Den Den. After about 20 rings (literally), a woman answers the phone. I told her I had placed an order online, and wanted to know how long it would be before I could pick up my order. The woman, obviously irritated, told me that she's not taking that order and she doesn't answer the phone from "those people" (I assume she meant GrubHub). I told her that I had already paid, and she asked me what was it I wanted to order. She explained again that she didn't answer the phone for them, and that I was welcome to come into the restaurant and order. I hung up, disappointed and starving. To Den Den: Look, I'm no business man, but if you have issues with GrubHub, that's between you and them, but don't get your customers involved. All I wanted was some damn food!!! You all lost a potential repeat/loyal customer. I order out quite a bit and I'm very loyal once I find a good place. I'll never know if Den Den's food is any good. At this point, I don't particularly care to. If this is how they normally treat their customers, then I don't think this place will be open much longer. There's plenty of other places I can do business with. Oh, yeah, as an extra bonus, now I get to hassle with GrubHub to try and get a replacement coupon code, since it was wasted on this order. The best Ethiopian in town, and the most reasonably priced too! Well it's technically Eritrean, and if you want a fascinating Wikipedia session, read about the split between the two countries as well as the architecture in Eritrea's capital, Asmara. Anyway, back to the food! Get the veggie platter. Everything on it is really special, and they'll rotate some lentil or leafy vegetable dishes in and out every now and again. Go with a few friends so you can sample the okra and the chickpeas too. Wow those are good. The sleeper on the menu has to be the fish. It's hard to find a piece of fish cooked that beautifully anywhere north of Calumet Fisheries. I like the spicy one, but I bet the non-spicy version is wonderful too. Can't speak to the meat dishes. Sorry about that. I'm sure they're stellar. Also, have to give a nod to the ambience and the service. Such a great experience eating there every time. I like how they didn't explain the adventure of East African cuisine. The service was nice, prompt and there when you wanted them, not there when you didn't. The food is amazing. Now I am no maven of East African (Ethiopian, Eritrean, etc), but I have had it before and I don't remember it being this good. I had Qilwa Tibs, it is a great thing that the menu has numbers, I had not the least idea how that might sound., the spicy version of course. Tibsi Derho was ordered and Alich a Derho (dark chicken meat served unironically with an egg). As well with two different lentil dishes; one red, one yellow and a tossed salad. Served with njera on a community plate (which is really nice). So that is a nice way to eat other folk food, something that I think is really appreciated with the cuisine. A nice adventure all and all, and they have earned the top spot for my East African go to. Which of course lands them on the list of 'go to'. Cool. The food is nice and flavorful. Spicy where it is supposed to be spicy, and not where it is not intended. And you do it often enough, eating with njera is an easy habit to form. read more

This is my second time trying Ethiopian/Eritrean food. Before coming here, I had my reservation about Ethiopian cuisine since the last time I tried it in NYC, the dishes were a bit on the pungent side and many flavor combinations tasted unfamiliar to me. This time around, we ordered 3 entrees consisting of mainly chicken stew and vegetarian options, all served and neatly arranged on a single platter with a layer of injera sitting underneath (they also come separately on the side). For the uninitiated, injera is a fermented flatbread that has a very spongy texture and a yeasty taste. To begin the process of eating, you take the injera to grab whatever on the platter in small, manageable bite sizes. I personally really enjoy coming to the end of a meal and eating the bottom layer of injera that had already soaked up all the essence of the meat and vegetable sitting on top. Contrary to my prior experience, I really enjoyed the various dishes and flavors at Den Den. I think it is because the flavors are quite mild but at the same time pleasantly authentic, which my friends and I really appreciated. The thing though, it is a bit above average in terms of price but it's absolutely well worth a visit if you are a foodie. Fantastic! I've tried a number of the Ethiopian restaurants in Chicago (Demera, Awash, Lalibela, etc.) but Den Den's Eritrean influence elevates it above the rest. I'll admit, when it comes to Ethiopian fare, I'm a pretty standard veggie combination kind of girl. So I can't speak to the lamb, beef, chicken, and seafood dishes. But what I do know well, are the vegetarian items and Den Den offers the best version of these in Chicago. First of all, their veggie combo is very reasonably priced at $14 and unlike other restaurants where you have to pick only 4 items, Den Den includes ALL their veggie items in their combo. The result is a beautifully presented and PACKED combo platter that could feed 2 with an appetizer and was more than enough food for 1. The food is very light on oil, which I appreciate. The alicha lentils and shiro are practically oil-free (which I can't say the same for other places) and full of flavor. There is a noticeably higher use of seasoning adding more flavor and more spice to each item making it one of the best tasting Ethiopian/Eritrean experiences I've ever had, and certainly the best in Chicago. Service was a bit slow but extremely friendly. And considering I went randomly at 3:30 on a Thursday, I assume staffing wasn't exactly at its peak. Everything was made fresh to order, and when I saw how piping hot my plate was I didn't mind the wait after ordering. This is such a fun saturday night restaurant. It was literally empty-- EMPTY-- so a great choice if you want an interesting meal on short notice. No reservations needed! We had never had Eritrean (or the very closely related Ethiopian) food before, so we came in blind. We got a lamb dish and a vegetarian sampler, and it was heaven. Just heaven. There were delicious lentils, a couple of cabbage dishes, and a few items that were like curried veggies. A lot of the flavors seemed similar to Indian food (the mild curry), and also Middle Eastern (sumac, perhaps?) but ... TANGY-ER. I think there was a healthy dose of vinegar in each dish that was unexpected and delightful. Our waitress was friendly and adorable (though she did forget our injera, leaving us to try to scoop up the dishes with our fingers or the injera under the food, which was a mess. we were newbies, remember! so if you don't get large plates of injera, ask for it!). We lingered for a while, trying to stuff one more bite in despite being full. I want to go back soon, as in, right away. I went with my girlfriend on a cold Friday night. We were greeted with a friendly Eritrean man who promptly served us Denden Mass (the honey wine). It was tart and tangy with a hint of sweet. I've been looking to buy it in bottles ever since. We ordered fish and chicken. It came with a lot of side dishes, unlike the other Ethiopian restaurants I'd been to. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. The chicken fell off of the bone. The sides were great. The fermented cabbage was just the right level of spicy, and the salads were exquisite. I absolutely love this place and eat here as often as I can. It is a gem for Chicago and more so for Rogers Park and oneof the 18 distinct ethnic restaurants within 3 miles of my house. Honestly I do not know whoch to rate higher - the food or the people. The staff is always soooooo nice and attentive and friendly. They try to give a bit of themeselves in their service and the only time I have EVER been recognized and greeted in such a great way was at Les Nomades. Fortunately you won't spend 400$ to eat at Den Den and you'll be a welcome guest and friend from the moement you step into the place. The food - to me - seems to have some italian influence with its furtada and spaghetti. They cook with herb infused oils and butter. They keep the teft bread plentiful and everyting is made and prepped with great care. My favorites are a giant vegetarian get up with Lamb or spicy chicken on the side. Of course their greens are awesome and their lentils are fantastic. My only word of caution is tothe coffee. It is an experience when they cook the beans and smoke them in the brass pot and bring you out a jug of coffee and the popcorn is just so cool. BUT careful how much you drink unless you plan on being up all night driving coast to coast. Delicious but powerful. I have often driven past this place and regretted having eaten at work when I could have stopped here and been treated like family and served wickedly good food. I'm one happy camper right now! I just got home from having a very late lunch at Den Den and I'm happy to report that it lived up to the high expectations that I'd developed based on the reviews here on Yelp. I walked in at 4 pm and not surprisingly at that time of day I was the only diner in the restaurant. My server was a very friendly man who was happy to chat with me to find out what type of meat I'd like to eat and the level of spiciness I desired. Based on my answers he suggested a particular type of chicken dish and I'm very glad I took his recommendation. Although this is not an Ethiopian restaurant I'd read the reviews on Yelp earlier in the day so I expected fairly slow service like at Ethiopian restaurants I've eaten at in the past. I literally got my food faster than I've gotten burgers at some McDonald's in the past (I didn't think to time it but I'd say no more than 7 minutes max). All of the components of my meal were served hot and tasted freshly made and not like it was just left overs from regular lunch hours which had been about 3 hours before I arrived. The platter of food I was served really was enough for 2 people, but the food tasted so good instead of eating half and taking home half like I planned when I first saw the platter, I ended up eating ever bite of it and walked out feeling like one very stuffed and satisfied pig. My entrée came with about 5 sides of vegetables and salad. All I can say is they were all excellent. The flavors were almost identical to flavors I've grown to love in Ethiopian restaurants. After I finished eating I spent a few minutes chatting with the gentleman serving me and asked him about the country this type of food comes from. He seemed happy to answer my questions and was forgiving of my slaughtering of the pronunciation of the country's name and shared with me a bit of the history of how and when the country won it's independence. It's always a nice bonus when I can not only eat some great food, but also learn a little about the part of the world where the flavors were generated. The interior of the restaurant while nothing fancy was nothing that would discourage a person from eating there. It was very clean and I felt very at ease eating there. The prices at first glance appeared just a little higher than what I'm used to paying at other restaurants that serve similar type cuisines. The good news though is after tasting the flavors I can assure you that it was worth every penny and then some. Personally I'd gladly pay considerably more if necessary to enjoy the flavors I had today. Overall a very enjoyable meal and I'm looking forward to many more at Den Den. This is one of my favorite places to eat at in rogers park. It's a lot a fun going with a small group of people, as long as you don't mind throwing the western ways for a bit. Instead of forks and individual dishes, you use injera, a light spongy flatbread, to grab whatever desired meat or veggie from the table. Waitress was voice. I liked the atmosphere-- clean and well-decorated, but not too busy. Dinner entrees were $12-15. Fortunately the owner was very nice and gave me his card and told me that next time I came he would give me something additional for the trouble. Just cane back from dinner with two friends after being lazy on a damp, rainy Sunday. One of the friends passed Den Den and was not familiar with the cuisine but found out it was similar to Ethiopian food so we decided to try it out. I am a huge fan of Ethiopian Diamond on Broadway, but Den Den was a bi better. The food was less oily and plentiful, we were the only patrons in there so the service was excellent. This is a great, family-run restaurant. They have such amazing, flavorful, Eritrean food. The owners/workers are very friendly and provide excellent service. I've tried many of the items on the menu and you really can't go wrong with any of them. You can really tell each dish is made-to-order. Also, they give an abundance of food. This is an Eritrean restaurant. The country borders on Ethiopia and the food is very similar. There is a famous Ethiopian restaurant. The food at Denden is just as good and a little cheaper. They are also open for lunch during the week when the other is not. When I was there the other 8 people dining were all native north Africans. The food is authentic and very good. I love the place. Their coffee is very dense and spicy but the flavor was so good that I did not need sweetener even tho sugar was there. I had the lamb and was happy for it. I've had the opportunity to enjoy various Ethiopian restaurants all around the states, we were excited to try one in Chicago. The food was great, fresh, flavourful, and absolutely no "grit" that we've gotten in the past (perhaps spices weren't fully absorbed into the food?). The Injera was just the right strength and tartness, but very subtle and soft. If you're looking for a down to earth Ethiopian restaurant, I recommend Den Den. Our experience may have been a little different, but in all good ways. We showed up on a cold winter night, and unknown to us, they were preparing for a family wedding celebration, the entire restaurant was prepared for an event, but they insisted we sit and enjoy a meal. We got to watch as (what we assume) family showed up and we're social, whole we were obviously the outsiders, we felt welcomed and we're served a wonderful meal. So the food was fantastic, as was the atmosphere, our only complaint is that we would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to simply observe the gathering that was happening. I was looking to try African food and I came across this great place. This is a family own traditional Eritrean restaurant. The food was amazing (I forgot the name of the plate I ordered but if you need a recommendation try number 25.) I love the fact that you have to eat this plate with your bare hands.(you can have utensils but don't be lame).The chefs which was a woman came out to our table to greet us. she was very friendly and happy. This is by far one of the best restaurants in Rogers Park, not to mention the best African-food restaurant on the North side of Chicago. Eritrean food is similar (but not identical) to Ethiopian food, so I cannot claim this as my favorite Ethiopian restaurant, but it is much better than all Ethiopian restaurants in the vicinity, including "Ethiopian Diamond" (which used to be my favorite, but no longer!!). The food takes a while to be prepared, but it tastes fresh, hot, and diversely seasoned. The injera bread is light, the meat is very well-seasoned, the vegetable dishes diverse and delicious. I haven't tried all of the items, but all of the beef, chicken, seafood, and vegetable items I've tried were fantastic. Some dishes are spicy, but to my joy I detected no jalapeno peppers, unlike many other places, which add jalapenos instead of chili spices that are more endemic to African cuisine. They recently raised their prices, but they are still cheaper and better than their competition. My friends and I are always anxious about the empty tables in this restaurant. We like the quiet atmosphere and having the staff's attention, but we want this place to thrive. I live in walking distance, but I would drive here if I didn't. My friend and I were the only ones there on a Wednesday evening. The food was so tasty and satisfying. If you like Ethiopian food, you will love Den Den. We ordered a spicy dal (lentil bean) and chickpea puree main dish (these main dishes are thick stews piled atop a large, round, disk of spongy, sour-ish bread called injera). When the whole platter came out, we saw that they also gave us a little pile of collards, curried potatoes & carrots, and lettuce salad. Such nice (and unexpectedly extra) additions to round out our vegetarian meal! The injera seemed more tangy than at some Ethiopian restaurants I've been to, in a pleasant way. Stopped in this cute family run restaurant and thought everything was quite good, although service was a little slow. (Enough that this is basically a 3.5 star review.) I ordered a drink but it didn't come until after our food had arrived! We ordered the Zighni Begi'e, which was perfectly spiced and delicious. We also ordered the Tsebh'i Brsen, which were less spicy but certainly still hit the spot. The den den wine (a honey wine mead) was lightly carbonated - a first for me that I didn't particularly enjoy. It was also more bitter than most honey wine I've had. My companion liked it just fine. Simply unbelievable food! I don't want to write a long review but suffice to say, this place has incredible, communal food. The injera is nice and spongy. The lamb in the berebere peppers is outstanding and the vegetables... Superb. The honey wine is good and tangy, if a touch sweet. First time eating Ethiopian food! Always looking for fun new flavors. The place was a little empty but we were coming in past the lunch rush. Ample space for a large group. The server was very friendly. I ordered some lamb and my wife ordered some chicken. They were brought out together in a platter. The lamb was nice and spicy. We were among the few brave souls out on a stormy night and there was one very nice waiter to help us. Unfortunately he would disappear and not be seen again for some time. I'm going with 5 stars, the coffee just pushed it over the top. Sort of like expresso, sort of like Turkish coffee yet ordering it is an experience! I tend to say that all meals out are experiences but this is a really cool and interesting one. They actually roast the coffee when you order it, it's flavored with maybe cardamom? Not heavily or unpleasantly, I will add, I am not a fan of favored foofy coffee. I like a nice dark roast and that is what this is. In fact it is so good, I did not even add cream, just some sugar and it was a sweet dark treat! Note, coffee takes a while, They roast it when you order it, so order it early it may take longer to prepare than your food. The staff are friendly, I mean not bothersome chatty sitting at your table, but attentive and very kind. Which is perhaps rarer and preferable. The food is Eriterian, similar enough to Ethiopian yet better in my mind than the Ethiopian I have had before. It's been a while, I'll admit. There were 4 of us, and we had all the food on a central platter. This is convenient for sharing. When I was a kid we did Chinese food that way and restaurants had a sort a lazy susan in the center of the table. Well, the circular tray works like that and you can bring a dish you want to try around to you with a quick spin. I enjoyed teh bread here miore than I have had previously. Perhaps it's more authentic? I've heard it isn't wheat or barley but something particular to East Africa. It's a sort of sour dough pancake that you use to scoop up tastes of food that you want to try. Um, they are used sort of like tortillas. Theirs are very good adn they brought out more when we ran low without us having to wave anyone down. That sort of attentiveness is always welcome! I particularly liked the red lentils in a sort of curry, I mean I REALLY liked them I ordered chunks of beef in spices, which was quite tasty. There was a cabbage dish taht was also good and two lamb dishes and we had one chicken. They were all tastey. Now you might think this would be enough, but the waitress brought us some (don't know the name) a sort of chick peas pureed with lots of butter. I love Ethiopian food and am giving this place a try for the first time. When I walked in two men were sitting there not looking like they were or had enjoyed a meal. I sat for about 10 minutes the music was loud and a lady was in the back washing dishes. No one attempted to take my order I finally asked them men what was up. They yelled to the women in the back. She came forward. I told her I was sitting here and asked it they worked here she said yes they were her family. This is annoying cause they just sat here conversing I obviously want to eat!! I sat down. I tried to order a drink and she said the bartender wasn't here yet. When she shows up she brings the lazy men some drinks. I left it alone cause I am going somewhere else and can order drinks there. Now for the food: it was decent, I had the fish. The tea was great thou. This place is phenomenal. It was my first time eating Eritrean food and I am so glad I tried it!!!! It was delicious and flavorful and incredibly filling. I split a bunch of food with my boyfriend and mom on one huge platter. The fish was the best part, which we ate along with 2 spicy beef dishes, lots of lovely lentils, and a salad. Had the upmost fantastic authentic eating experience at Den Den! The server was very kind in answering our questions as my daughter and I explored their diverse menu. After our delicious meal our experience was topped off by sharing coffee with the lovely owner and mastermind behind the menu . Couldn't of asked for a better dining experience. read more
