This morning, we were on the road earlier than usual, so I called at 7:46 AM hoping to place an order for pickup at 8:00 AM when they opened. The employee who answered sounded annoyed and immediately told me I had to call back at 8:00 AM to place the order. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I understand policies and operating procedures. However, if staff are already in the building answering the phone, taking an order a few minutes early for pickup after opening seems like a simple way to provide good customer service and retain loyal customers. Instead, the interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming. In today's economy, customer service and repeat business matter. Because of the experience, I chose not to stop, didn't charge my Tesla there as planned, and took my business elsewhere. It's unfortunate because this was a place I regularly visited and recommended during my trips.

Our favorite part of the stop was discovering the dinosaur park behind the building. It's surrounded by a moat that feeds into ponds filled with turtles of all sizes. The kids counted at least 50 of them, and we ended up staying for a good half hour enjoying the scene. It turned what could have been a quick meal into one of the most memorable rest stops on our six-hour drive from San Diego to Las Vegas. I also ordered the strawberry rhubarb pie "à la mode" and it was yummy. I'll describe it as the ultimate sweet, tart dessert that reminded me of a strawberry milk shake. The jammy sweetness of ripe strawberries was perfectly balanced with the buttery crust and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This was the cherry on top to my breakfast. (Two of the adults are in their 80's mind you.) We're really hungry lol. Two 4 seater tables finally open up in this tiny place. A small family of 3 shows up and knows the hostess (pixie haircut and piercings, don't know her name but can't miss her.) she waves them in and gets them one of the 4 seaters, no wait for friends I guess! 2 minutes later a third 4 seater opens up in the same row but she sat her friends at the one right in the middle. So they call our name and then tell us we have to separate our family to get seated and take the two 4 seaters on opposite ends of the table they gave away. They don't give a (insert your favorite curse word here). I guess it's okay though because they warn you on their menu that the staff might be moody lol! A great scapegoat for terrible service. Never again. Here's a tip to anyone reading: go literally 1 minute west down the road and eat at the first restaurant you see. They were phenomenal!
