Surprising location - it's inside of a gas station. Did not read reviews ahead of time, but just noticed that it had 4.5 stars on Yelp. Remembering that it had a high star count encouraged us to give this place a chance. All that being said, the food was pretty good, there was a small seating area, and the lady that helped was very nice. We ordered the birria torta, one chicken taco, one steak taco, and chicken strips with fries. Living in the Bay Area for most of my life (Hayward and San Jose), I can confirm that what we ordered was pretty tasty and worth the stop if you're craving Mexican on your journey. Two critiques - my husband says his fries could have been salted more, and I think something to level up this business would be to sell agua frescas or horchata. My phone was dead while we stopped there, so, sorry, no pictures. Absolute diamond in the rough! I was road trippin from Flagstaff to SoCal and probably put off eating too long, so I stopped off at a chevron in Newberry Springs for a refill. I expected to only get a bag of jerky until I pulled into the station and seen flags featuring burritos and tacos. It was like the heavens opened up and I could hear the Angels singing lol. Rolled in and got two tacos (Al Pastor and Lengua) and a carnitas mulita and OMG it was amazing! Who knew you could get quality Mexican food at a random gas station a couple minutes outside of Barstow? I still have family in Cali, hence the trip, and this spot will FOR SURE be a refuel stop (in more ways than one). After reading other Yelp reviews, we tried the Newberry Springs Cafe. It's a small space located at a gas station/convenience store. It serves Mexican dishes and hamburgers. We enjoyed a plate of taquitos with beans and rice, and a mulita. The Mexican menu is extensive. Everything was clearly homemade and delicious. There are a couple of tables inside, and two tables outside. The woman who took our orders was friendly and efficient. A great stop in the middle of nowhere! read more

There's a lot to be said about this small eatery located off the 40 at a gas station no less. I am a "local" living in the middle of nowhere, and finding something to eat when I don't want to cook is extremely difficult. We decided to try this place out cuz I just didn't want to cook, and Subway just wasn't a choice for dinner. Just had lunch here. Decided to stop here after seeing all the great recommendations. I was not disappointed. The little restaurant is based inside the Chevron... So it's a great place to get fuel, get some drinks... And have some amazing Mexican food. My husband had the chicken street tacos. I had a Carne Asada and a Carnitas street taco. The number one clue that this was going to be a great place to eat is their salsa. Both the red/hot and the green/mild we're homemade and fresh. You can absolutely taste that it wasn't some thing sitting in the refrigerator for days or weeks or something that came out of a can. The meat was marinated and it has so much flavor. On the first bite you knew that they got it right. I grew up in Pico Rivera and we had many taco and Mexican restaurants in town. So this reviewer knows her stuff! The only drawback was I wish I was more hungry and willing to order something like the chili relleno and/or enchiladas plate or the wet burrito. They also have Menudo on the menu... Just wanted to put that teaser out there. I am going to bookmark this little taco restaurant and be back in the future as I travel near the 15 & 40. Took a chance based on Yelp reviews and was not disappointed! Look for the wing banners out front as it's at the Chevron (there is no Valero). Very tiny eating area with two tables for two right next to the order window so had to take a star off for ambience. I had the taco salad with chicken in the tortilla shell and it was excellent. Chicken was very flavorful and it included grilled red and green peppers and onions. My husband had the taquitos meal and said it was excellent. We would have ordered churros to go but they make them fresh so it would have been an extra ten minutes and we needed to get on the road. Friendly people and very reasonably priced. read more

The playful menu and reasonable prices caught our interest, and after enjoying a street taco each, our interest grew into a desire to sample more! We loved the pico de gallo on the tacos, and begged Melissa to tell us what was in it, but being that her father had been a chef for Beach House restaurants in Orange County, and this was a family recipe, we understood why she didn't want to divulge their secrets! The folks behind the counter were super friendly. We got a philly cheese steak that was really hot and tasty. Not super big but really enjoyed it. If I have one complaint it is that the fries were mediocre. My 8 year old got a plain cheeseburger and fries and she was happy. My 9 year old got taquitos which were made with flour tortillas and were super tasty. We also got a carne burrito with the works. Next time I will order it with light beans and rice and add lettuce. The food here is absolutely fantastic. It's reasonably priced, and the service is friendly and good as well. I stopped in to get gas on my way home from a motorcycle trip to Colorado from LA, so unfortunately, I live two hours away. If I lived closer, I'd be eating here on a regular basis. The Mrs. and I each got a cheeseburger. The patty was a flavorful, honest 1/4 pound, with a piece of real cheddar cheese. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the bread was fresh and tasty also. The fried zucchini and french fries were fried to absolute perfection, which makes me think their fish tacos and fish and chips would be awesome as well. If you're traveling through the Barstow/Newberry Springs area on the 40, and you're hungry, do yourself a favor and give this place a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

Great little spot! We loved it! We always use to stop at the subway and this time my guy wanted to check out the red barn (little watering hole). They told us about the cafe. It's located adjacent to the Chevron gas station not where yelp is putting it! It's very small so it looks like it is part of the gas station convenience store. There is a small sign distinguishing it as the Newberry Cafe! Food was fantastic, reasonable prices and the owners friendly and pleasant! So, as many of you already know I'm an "Over the Road" truck driver. After spending the night in the adjacent lot to the Chevron Station in Newberry Springs, CA. I decided to get a bite to eat at the "Newberry Cafe". It's a small Mexican/American Cafe with some tasty food. I ordered the "Meaty, Cheesy Quesadilla w/ Carne Asada (Steak). Other choices in meats are Pollo (Chicken) & Carnitas (Pulled Pork) and possibly one other meat though at the moment I can't recall. The Quesadilla was loaded with Mexican Queso (Mexican Cheese Blend) and chopped Carne Asada. The picture doesn't do it justice since I had already eaten one large slice. Juicy and full of flavor I ate half of it and am saving the remaining half for later. I really enjoyed the food here and will be stopping again to try other Mexican dishes. If you happen to be passing by and feel a bit hungry I suggest you the Newberry Cafe a try. read more
