Only then was I told that there was a $145.00 "one time single use instrument" office charge that isn't submitted to the insurance company and is "an office charge for instruments used during the procedure". Sounds like something that should be included in the cost of a procedure since these instruments are needed to perform the procedure. As if dealing with insurance companies isn't bad enough, I shouldn't have to worry about my doctor charging extras to get more money out of me.

At my follow-up appointment, I was unexpectedly told I owed an additional $1,300 for work completed during the extraction that was later denied by my insurance. My concern is that these procedures were performed without clearly informing me that they might not be covered or that I could be responsible for additional costs. When I contacted my insurance company, they advised that the office could submit additional documentation for review, but I did not feel the office was willing to pursue that option. I was also told my gums were really bad and I needed a deep cleaning every 3 months until they got better and needed to buy a water pik toothbrush. Mind you, I get my cleanings every 6 months, faithfully. I was sent an estimate bill that was well over $1500. I had a bad feeling when I left, so I decided to get a second opinion, which I'm so glad I did. I did not need a deep cleaning and got my regular cleaning, my gums are healthy and fine and I did have 1 small cavity starting between my teeth. That is all. Nothing more. $17 later and I'm good for another 6 months. So glad I didn't listen and got a second opinion.
