Right when we sat down to our respective seats, somebody I figured to be the manager approached our table and took very good care of us. He strongly suggested the omelet of the day and simply sold the other person in my party for that selection. Very friendly and patient waiter. Anyway it took almost no time at all to receive our food. The cook was quick and efficient. They also did an excellent job of ensuring our beverages were filled. Now for the food: Not bad! We both ordered omelets and I was encouraged on their size. I was later informed that this establishment uses 3 eggs instead of the traditional 2. So I guess you can get quality and quantity. Also I would like to point out that I wasn't charged for an added ingredient I was curious about. He said it's usually an extra charge but he just threw it in for free which always deeply impresses me. Anyway if you are looking for a decent diner breakfast in the Marietta area and you haven't given Derek's a try- I would give them a shot. Inexpensive, a good amount of food and friendly service gives this location and A in my book. read more

My first time visiting here although I've passed it a bunch of times. After reading reviews, I decided to try it. I am so glad I did!! I ordered the Smothered Biscuit with country fried steak. It was a very big portion and very delicious! They have a couple Spanish dishes and Corned Beef Hash on the menu too that I will try during other visits. There was no wait, the restaurant is very clean and homely, the owner is sitting in an open booth talking to customers. Prices are reasonable. All the food tasted prepared in-house and not made from a mix or frozen, like the country fried steak and gravy. 2 stars: Prompt on Diet Coke/coffee refills and food still tastes good. 3 stars deducted for: This is my third visit to Dereks, but first time at their new location. My past 2 visits were awesome. But this one, not so much. We arrived to Dereks and promptly sat ourselves, as usual. Our waitress (?) came over to wipe our table off, along with the table next to us, and took our drink order. My sister had stepped away to use the restroom, so we ordered her a coffee. Once my sister got back to the table, our waitress arrived back at the table with our drinks. Told us she'd be back with our menus. Brought them and made the comment "see you in 2 hours." Wish I would've seen that red flag. About 10 minutes later, our server returned to take our orders. Our food took quite a long time. From where we were sitting, I could see them checking out our plates. Like looking on them to make sure the right thing was on the plates. A little nerve racking because no their demeanor implied something was wrong. 5 minutes later, we saw our food come out...to the wrong table. Nothing was passed out, just think this gentleman didn't realize the table numbers. Food arrived at our table with the chit from the kitchen, basically role calling food. Once everything was delivered, we realized that there were many items missing, and no silverware around. Our waitress said that the other gentleman was grabbing the items in the kitchen and she would tend to the refill of drinks and silverware. Upon inspecting our food, we realized that Derek's no longer does a 3 egg omelet and lacked the appeal we were accustomed to from our previous visits. Additionally, My boyfriend had specifically requested no mushrooms in his omelette. When we alerted the waitress, she told us that she "loved mushrooms and they were here favorite and we should just eat them/pick around them." My boyfriend shrugged and agreed. She then made a comment that the "kitchen was behind," and scurries off. That was the last time we saw our waitress. The amount of mushrooms in the omelette made it pointless to even pick them out, so he just sat there while everyone else ate and ultimately finished their meals. We all mentioned how if it could be remade to-go, we would be fine. But no. Our server, made eye-contact with us multiple times, and didn't come back to the table. Finally after waiting, I went up to the register and asked for the kitchen to remake the food. Someone who wasn't our server came up to retake the order and apologized. At that point, we told her to take it off the bill and we were leaving. Sadly, this will be our last time at Dereks. We hyped this place up to my sister and her husband (first timers) about how awesome everything was, only to be disappointed in how it was-not. Derek's is one of those places where you go once because you hear everything good about it, but when you get there it doesn't quite live up to expectations. Don't get me wrong... the food was decent and our service was solid, but for all of the high ratings and positive commentary about this place I was expecting to have my mind blown. That honestly didn't happen. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and my companion ordered a breakfast sandwich. The Benedict was just okay; the hollandaise was a little heavy on the butter and came out a bit on the chunky side, and the eggs weren't prepared correctly. I don't even think they were poached; they really seemed to be fried over-easy, perhaps in an egg ring of some sort. The grits were very good. I was told that the breakfast sandwich and its accompaniments were also very good. That brings us to the other problem: both meals plus a coffee and an orange juice for each of us came to $26. To say that's a bit much for the food that we had is an understatement. It was a good breakfast, but certainly not a $30 breakfast. "Overpriced" is putting it mildly. I guess the takeaway from Derek's is that it's decent, but not nearly worth the money. You can easily get roughly the same fare at Waffle House for about half the price. read more

My first visit to new location for a breakfast, gotta say not impressed. We had four at our table and two of the meals were a complete flop. My eggs were over cooked the English muffins under the eggs Benedict was so tough that I had a time cutting it. I ordered a side of toast that was cold and dry, toasted hours before serving. This place is awesome! I've eaten here for breakfast twice and both times has been great! The first time I tried this place, I got the French toast special. It was DELICIOUS! I've never had such light, fluffy French toast slices before! It came with grits and toast, both of which were great as well. (Although I will be getting cheese on my grits next time, even if it costs a little extra.) Today I had one of their make-your-own omelets with onions, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, and Swiss. Like the French toast, the eggs were also light and fluffy. All the veggies were cooked nicely and the toast that came with the order was also good. The hashbrowns were good, but not my favorite in the world (which is Waffle House... Derek's probably had less grease). There aren't a lot of parking spaces available, so show up early if you are coming with a group. The inside is a standard diner that feels cozy. The seats are spaced apart nicely and the waitresses are all nice. Sometimes service speed can be a little slow, but the staff's good nature makes up for that. The only unfortunate thing is that they close at 2 PM, so I've never gotten to try their lunch menu. I'll post an update if I ever do, though! My weekend errands have need for me to travel down canton rd. Each time I passed this place it was always busy. Today I was starving and in the mood for a late breakfast so thought I would give it a try. I am glad I did. Breakfast specials before 12 are 2.99 I was there after 12 so had the signature breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, hashbrowns and toast for 5.69. I am not sure how you would describe this place other than workmans cafe. Decor is nothing to write home about but is clean and comfortable. Seems to be family owned and they are all very friendly. Parking may be a problem during busy times. As well as breakfast they also do burgers, sandwiches and spanish food. They close at 3pm. So, this is no Murphys but if your in the area its a good solid breakfast / brunch destination that wont put a dent in your wallet. read more

Fun little greasy spoon. Filled with 'regulars.' The staff calls everyone sugar or honey and they nail that perfect thing where they're both sweet and laid back yet extremely efficient. The portions are excellent and the prices are really great. Watch yourself in the parking lot - it could stand re-paving - I nearly twisted my ankle and even though my SO saw me - he lumbered right behind me and almost twisted his as well on a neighboring pothole. Best grits....EVER!!! Normally, you gotta PILE on the salt/pepper/butter, and even then. But, I didnt have to TOUCH their grits. Even saved it for last. Not even 5 minutes from the house. My favorite spot for morning meetings. No frills, just tasty breakfast and fresh coffee. The lunch is great too, meat and 3 veggies with a Latin American flair on a few items. For the early risers on weekdays, the $3 breakfast is hard to beat (french toast and an egg for $3... AWESOME!). Derek's opens at 6 AM. One minor complaint, and easy to fix...the men's bathroom door sticks shut. It has done this for months. I know this is nit-picky, but have you ever had too much coffee, and stood outside an empty bathroom because you thought it was locked? Not that I've, uh, done something silly like that...but it could happen to, uh, someone... So, to the lovers of the Average Joe/Jolene early morning repast, come to Derek's and get a great deal on a fine, All-American breakfast...like a Greek omelet. Just my 2 cents worth. read more

I drive by this location about 4 or 5 times a week. And, it's always closed in the evening. I have wanted to give it a try for at least two years. This morning was the perfect opportunity. And, I'm glad that we did. The menu has a good range/selection of breakfast and lunch selections. It's not one of those crazy menus that takes 3 days to review. And that's very refreshing. Because, it means they can concentrate on doing the meals that they do and do them well. And that they do. I had the Gyro with hash browns. The menu bills it as the best in town. I think that I'm going to have to agree. What they do is that they don't only slice the lamb but they grill it. That gives it a crunchy and flavorful taste. My partner got the eggs benedict. He enjoyed it even though he does not like his yolks runny. I should have reminded him that the benedict has the center runny. The staff is friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. For the moderate level of parking, there is ample seating and there was no wait. That was nice and it's clear they do a lot of take out. Came into this packed parking lot, classic old-fashioned dinner once on the weekend for breakfast and again the other day for lunch and I am pleased to report that the fantastic meal I had on my first visit was not a fluke! Derek's really knows how to cook up a yummy scramble! Try the Ranchero--it will not disappoint. I can't say I recommend the grits, though. They were a bit too soupy for my tastes Luckily, the hashbrowns are some of the best I've ever had. Made my second visit yesterday. We were greeted immediately, enthusiastically and informally when we walked in. We found a seat and right away someone came to get our drink order. Our breakfasts were exactly as expected. Generous portions and hot off the grill. This place is old school. Friendly, informal and perfectly un-fancy. Lots of regulars are greeted by name. If that's not your thing, you can still get a great meal just don't go in expecting the polish of say... a Copelands brunch. This definitely IS my thing and we will return many times.
