I have been wanting to get laser hair removal for years but have been scared of the risks of laser hair removal as a black woman. Dark hair on dark skin is the hardest combination for this, most lasers have been designed for light skin and dark hair. For me it was important to find someone that not only had the right laser (Nd:YAG 1064nm) for my skin tone, but also someone who had experience treating someone that looks like me. I felt confident enough after my consultation with Dr. Graber to make my first appointment for laser hair removal. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 starts is because it is impossible to get someone on the phone to answer questions. I understand that they are extremely busy, but I had to call 5 times between Friday and Monday to finally get a response while I was in the car on my way to my appointment which was frustrating and scary before my first laser removal appointment. I ended up getting there early so that I had time to ask all my questions. Though I did feel a little rushed at first, when a said I had a couple questions they immediately got the doctor so I could speak to her before we proceeded. After that I felt relieved and much more comfortable proceeding with the laser treatment. In hindsight, I think this is so routine to the nurses and doctors that work there they probably thought I was a repeat patient and didn't anticipate me having questions. But as soon as I spoke up they were much more attentive and explained everything that they were doing along the way. I left feeling good about my overall experience and I think my next visit will be a better one now that I know what to expect. I've only just started laser hair removal treatment so I can't say yet how well it has worked but I have no negative side effects and have been able to go about my life normally after the first treatment. read more

I went here for a skin check and was promptly reminded that I would be charged for any questions they answered not related to a skin check. It felt really discouraging and I felt like I had to watch what I said to avoid paying extra fees. They ended up finding an abnormal mole and significantly downplayed the size of skin they were removing. I am having a awful experience with this office. I was prescribed a medication for hair loss and when my three month supply ran out, they refused to refill my prescription until I saw my dermatologist again. It is a type of medication that is dangerous to go on and off of (and if you choose to stop taking it you need to ween off slowly) but they still refused refill it even though I've run out and its only been 3 months since I started it. They told me I need to just "be patient." Terrible practice, stay away. read more

Spent all of 5 minutes with the nurse practitioner who didn't even look at my skin and poo-pooed me with an eye-roll when I made a suggestion as to what the allergy behind my eczema-dermatitis could be; he also did not explain things in a clear or accessible way, rather seemed more focused on training / explaining to the PA (?) and digital trainee on his headset (?). Long story short, several days after my appointment, I received confirmation as to what the allergy was. Perhaps needless to say, but I had been spot-on in my thinking. The front desk, although friendly, were not particularly competent. Not a terrible experience but not great. At my appointment for an annual skin check (which, to begin with, is a 10-minute appointment), I asked the doctor about what turned out to be a planters wart on my foot. He said he could freeze it off. I asked how long that would take, and he said it would be about 30 seconds. He sprayed a solution routinely used to freeze off warts, which was fine. The process was actually probably 15 seconds. I was then charged $139 for that one "procedure", on top of the $50 co-pay for the annual visit. When I called to discuss the charge of $139, I was told it was billed as a surgery. Totally unethical and inappropriate. read more

I've been seeing Emmy for about 8 years--not for extensive work, just lightweight skincare. I had a terrible fall a year ago and had a nasty scar above my lip. I live on the South Shore and saw 2 local doctors that were so unprofessional. I felt like I was at a "skin" doctor who profited by injecting people with fillers, Botox, and expensive skin care lines. I decided to go see Emmy and after my first treatment, the scar was reduced by 50%. She's thorough, yet cautious; kind, transparent and effective. She gave me hope--that the other 2 doctors didn't--in fact, I left the 2 local doctors depressed. The other "doctors" appeared to be far less trained in healing their patient--and, instead, pushed to sell things that I wasn't being asked to be treated. I will happily drive an hour, pay to park and be thrilled with the results over and over with Emmy. She's the best! And, her team at Boston Dermatology Institute is exceptional! read more

Let me save you some time: DO NOT book with this dermatologist. They charge $150 to drag you in for 15 minutes just to tell you what cosmetic treatments you can get - but they refuse to make an appointment in conjunction with the actual treatment (which is a total waste of time and money). They also refuse to do a skin check or give you a prescription for retnoil unless you set up a completely different appointment for a different amount of money at a completely different time. Huh? Terrible terrible customer service. I went there over 6 months ago to get some cancer removed from my leg. The doctor and the staff were great. Even the next day when I was in pain the doctor reached out and was able to get some emergency pain medicine prescribed to me. I was supposed to go back 6 months later for a check up. I asked if they would send me a reminder as I won't remember the appointment. They said they would. But they didn't, and then 47 hours before my 6 months check up they sent me a reminder. I told them I could not make it as I would be out of town. They said I owe them a $50 cancellation fee for cancelling within 48 hours! First they did not follow up with sending an appointment reminder when I asked them a while ago, them to purposely send a reminder 47 hours before the appointment so they can try to hit me with a 50 cancellation fee because it's under 48 hours? Deceptive practice. They are just about $$$, not about that there might be a legitimate reason why I can't make it. (Like my son being deployed) read more

Whole experience was great...until I went to the desk to check out and the women was so rude rolling her eyes when I asked a question about insurance, get snappy and rude right away, and then told me I could only schedule on a Wednesday or Thursday (when I was in on a Monday) even though the doctor had just told me I could see any of her colleagues. The level of customer service was unacceptable and just plain rude. Just like everyone in that office I also have a full time job and can not come on those two specific days but k have her full availability two other days. She offered no solution - not even telehealth which would have been at least something. If you don't want to get CANCER and be RIPPED OFF at the same time, don't go there. I went there to remove a mole that was bothering me. They only removed half of the mole, not the whole thing. After my stitches healed, I saw that half of the mole is still there. So I went there again asking them to fix it. Their response was "Oh, we didn't want to take out the mole. We just wanted to biopsy it", which is a complete lie. Every Dr in this filed knows that you don't just biopsy a mole, you remove it completely and then biopsy it. By removing half of the mole, you stimulate it to become CANCEROUS. Not only they didn't accept their mistake or apologize, but also they charged me again for the second time I went there to remove the other half of the mole. I think they just wanted to charge me twice this way. They will give you cancer if they can charge you twice. No doubt in my mind. The front desk is also a rude, unreasonable, and sad person who is only interested in collecting money. read more

She is AWESOME! Very thorough and knowledgeable. She is able to offer options and voice her opinion as to why a particular one is best for you, something I really appreciate instead of just being told take this. Her approach to treating your acne is strong but not too aggressive and she doesn't jump to strongest course of medicine(acutane) to treating acne if she doesn't feel it necessary. Although visits are short (usually about 15-30min) I feel that I received more than adequate care. She is also very personable and actually takes the time to listen and make any adjustments. The treatment did take some time but I've never been able to leave my house without makeup until now so I can't recommend her enough! read more

Dr. Gaber is FABULOUS! Why didn't I come here 1st?!  Answer: I should have listened to my Mother. Everyone in the office was kind and friendly.  I had a very short wait to see Dr. Gaber. She was wonderfully engaged and concerned. After a quick proactive examination, Dr. Gaber stated that my face blemish was atypical in look and design. She prescribed a couple of medications to address my concerns. Amongst many highlights of my visit was Dr. Gaber stating if this regime didn't address and resolve the issue, she will find another route. In addition, she said the next time inflammation arises, call the office and state that I need an emergency appointment and they will see me. Suuupppper unimpressed with the front desk here and for that reason alone, I would advise people to steer clear. I read another review where someone complained about being charged a surprise $150 'consultation fee' and that doesn't surprise me at all. The first time I visited, the doctor was really nice. A week later, I was double-charged for the visit and had to call the office and sort it out with them. Still, my experience had been overall positive, and I decided to come back a year later for an extraction. Previously, the person at the front desk was male, and quite nice and helpful, double billing aside. This time I dealt with a woman, Nurta. I emailed and asked a) do you provide extractions and b) how much does this service cost? I explained I would be paying out of pocket rather than using insurance. In response, I got an email asking me to detail what service I wanted, and give my insurance information. This seemed odd to me - I had just explained all that - but I obliged anyway. I received word that my insurance had 'gone through'. And then a week passed without a word. I emailed back, asking again if they provided extractions and had room in their schedule. I got another one-line reply that my insurance had gone through. I emailed AGAIN explaining that there was no reason to run my insurance, and all I wanted was a simple answer: can I book, yes or no? I got another one-line response telling me to call the office if I wished to make an appointment. Figuring something must be getting lost in translation, I called the office. Surprise, surprise. I got Nurta. I introduced myself and explained that I wanted an extraction, if those were offered. She asked me if I would like to come in on Thurs. at 10. I said 'Yes, but can you tell me what to expect? Will you guys provide the service right then and there? Or is there a consultation first?' She said they'd do it right there, without a consultation (I'm wondering if this is how the other reviewer got screwed with the $150 surprise fee). I asked if she could give me an estimate of cost. She said she couldn't. I was a little blown away and stuttered 'Well...can I have... a ballpark estimate? Is there anyone I can talk to who could give me more detail here?' She was like 'let me transfer you' and immediately handed me off to an answering machine. Giving it my last ditch effort, I left a polite message on the answering machine explaining my predicament for the millionth time and asking for a ring back. I'm sure you know the end of the story - no one returned my call. What you might not have guessed is that I was also BILLED for a 'missed appointment' about a week later. FRAUDULENT billing department. Do not go to the Dermatology institute. Before going to the 10 minute appointment, I called the office TWO times to double check my insurance information and clarify the after insurance cost of the visit. I was told by the employees of the office clearly that I was only liable for $15. Two weeks after the visit, I get a bill for an additional $91. Calling the Dermatology institute back, they sent me on a 2 hour run around through their 3rd party billing provider. Finally, the Office Manager Karen called me back and was extremely abrasive and rude. She told me that the full cost was clarified to me before the appointment which was NOT TRUE. I asked her to pull the call logs and she said she did, 2 minutes later she confirmed that she had LIED and that the office does not actually keep any call logs. This medical provider is liable for the actions and words of their employee. To be guaranteed a price BEFORE the appointment, and then be told AFTER that the price is 6x higher is FRAUDULENT. AVOID this dermatologist at all cost. read more

As a new patient having just moved to Boston, I always dread going to an unfamiliar office. The staff was extremely friendly. Both of the appointments I've had thus far were running on time. I suffer from cystic acne (the kind of painful acne that forms a giant bump under skin and takes weeks to go away on its own) and had an important event coming up in which I needed to look my best. As timing would have it, I developed two large bumps on my face and I was desperate for a quick fix. I was recommended by an esthetician to get a cortisone shot in them, which would flatten them out. I did a search to find out dermatology centers that offered this service. Amazingly, the Dermatology Institute got me an appointment the very next day after I called - they are great with fitting you into their schedule. I saw Cindy, who was very understanding and empathetic to my skin issues. I was in and out in no time, and my cystic acne bumps flattened out in 2 days. Would highly recommend! read more

If 0 out of 5 stars was an option I would have picked it. I came here for a rash on my leg. She barely looked at it and prescribed me a cream which she said I could pick up at my local CVS immediately. When I got to CVS they hadn't called anything in yet so I had to wait 40 minutes. After 3 weeks my rash had spread and was now worse than when I came in for my original visit. Trip #2 Dr. Graber looks at my rash and scrapes a sample onto a slide. She leaves and comes back 3 minutes later and has determined it is a not a rash but a fungus! It took her 3 minutes to figure this out. Why didn't she do that the first time? She prescribes me pills and another cream. Back to CVS where the prescriptions for a 2nd time hadn't been called in yet! I've been taking the pills and new cream for 3 weeks and the rash/fungus has spread and is now out of control. Bottom line... I called off work to come see DR. GRABER 2 times. 2 times I payed money for her expertise. 2 times she failed to call in my prescriptions to CVS and 2 times she failed at fixing my problem. This place is a joke and I question Dr. GRABER and her ability to treat folks who have a rash or fungus. If you have a rash my advice to you would be to go somewhere else! ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

My skin is kind of a nightmare / work in progress because it is constantly changing with different types of acne/rosacea/other redness. Dr. Emmy was relentless and had unwavering optimism with helping me find a solution for my skin. She tried many different pathways for treatment with me for three years because it seemed like every time we solved one problem my skin would turn against us again. I've been using a new topical that seems to be keeping everything at bay! Dr. Emmy is 100% the best derm in Boston, there is 0 question of that. The staff is also AMAZING. They are really the nicest, most professional medical provider staff I have dealt with in Boston. I really appreciate how I never felt like this dermatologist gave up on me. Woohoo, indeed! Five stars, as good as it gets all the way! My and my parents save up all of our derm issues until we are in New England for the summer, both cosmetic and health concerns. Dr. Graber really makes it feel like your concerns are important and is personable and thorough in all of her explanations of whatever your issues are. Although my own derm issues had been routine skin checks and a few basal cell carcinomas - standard stuff, this past summer I saw Dr. Graber for cosmetic concerns, and got Botox! Oh. My. Gosh. I love it! I'm 48 and wish I hadn't waited so long! She has an amazing eye to advise what will work for you. Everyone is asking if I lost weight or asking what's different. MAGICAL! I'm trying to figure out what cosmetic procedures to discuss with Dr. Graber the next time I'm in Boston - CoolSculpting?!
