Was driving through Shreve on our way to Wooster & saw this Amish restaurant. We hadn't had supper so we decided to stop. We found a seat quickly & menus were brought to us. The server took our drink order while we perused the menu. The sweet tea was so refreshing. Hubby ordered #19 North Atlantic Broiled Cod with mashed potatoes & green beans. I ordered the Amish Sampler Plate ($18.99)...turkey & roast beef with sides of mashed potatoes & homemade dressing which also came with the soup & salad wagon. Hubby cleaned his plate which means he loved it. I really liked everything I got. The homemade dressing was dry & made with croutons so that was a little disappointing. Other than that, my food was delicious. My only regret was that we were too full to order dessert. The dessert menu looked GOOD. Our server provided us with very good service. This place gets four stars for being open on Sunday! Otherwise it would be a high three stars. Firstly, this is Amish country so finding anything open on a Sunday in this area is finding something in a baron land. The salad bar cart is definitely a must, the ingredients are garden fresh. The macaroni salad is really good and sweet. There were four soups and all were homemade and delicious. I tried Swiss steak that is only made on Tuesdays and Sundays with Mashed Potatoes. These items were just okay, nothing over the top exciting that I would just die to come back for. My hubby had the broasted chicken, it was nice and moist and light. He had the sauerkraut which he wouldn't get again and barely touched. For the finishing I had the banana cream pie and it was interesting. Delicious and sweet, I only needed a few bites it can definitely be shared at the table it's huge. They have a little store on your way out with some little handcrafted items. While traveling through the Amish area we stumbled onto this little town and discovered a restaurant on the Main Street. Gift shop in the front and a huge seating area in the back. In Shreve, this restaurant is quaint and unusual. Upon entering you feel you may be in an Amish farm house except one room empties into another and another. The menu is extensive. My husband had the ground sirloin sandwich. Not easily pleased he pronounced it absolutely delicious. My daughter and I had the BLT with onion rings. We tried not to lick our fingers. Very pleasant waitress. We sat with our iced tea and visited with one another without being rushed. Well worth the drive to Shreve. read more

Walking in here was like stepping back in time . I wanted the Buffett , but sadly I was too early . It didn't start until 4pm. My husband had a cheeseburger and onion rings. He was very pleased. I had a three piece fried chicken , mashed potatoes and green beans. I was impressed by the fresh wheat bread that was brought to the table , but not as impressed by the fried chicken. We were heading home, thinking about detouring to Mrs. Yoder's kitchen, over Mt Hope way, when we spied with our little eyes Des Dutch Essenhaus on the map. So we wheeled over to Shreve, sat down in the knotty pine dining room and ate. Food was cafeteria quality. Service was "Hey, Seth? When's the next bus-load due. Oh, sorry. You ready to order?" Not good. Not at all good. Two stars because Shreve is nicer than the abandoned towns to the south, and the knotty-pine and historical pictures are great, and it has been here so long, who am I to say it's not so hot? We'll stop one more time, in the next year, just to be sure that we didn't hit an off day. But jeez. This is home-cookin', which SHOULD be simple, clean food, with flavor and quality. Not what we were served. Until we go back, you shouldn't either. You can get the same menu, and the same atmosphere at Mrs. Yoder's, with the exception that there the food and service will both be delicious. The reason for 4 stars isn't because of employees it's because some of their food isn't all that good. For example the mash potatoes have a weird taste like they put to much of something or did something to them. Don't get me wrong their food is good but it's mostly the mashed potatoes. The employees are very helpful and very kind. So don't just not go because of one thing because who knows they could taste could another day and be tasting bad the other. Authentic Amish PA Dutch cooking. They are slow, but the food is all fresh. We had the 2-meat family feast which easily fed 3 people and really could feed 4. SAVE ROOM FOR PIE. Their pies are PHENOMENAL. The banana cream pie was the best I've ever had. read more

Mother's day with my family had reservation for over a week to take my wife , mother in law and sister in law and all the kids. Buffet had no food left and no plates had to wait for everything to come out . Then when it finally came out half was uncooked shredded potato with some kind of sauce on them . The sweet potatoes they were supposed to have were canned yams that weren't even heated through. Supposed to have 4 different meats and had only half cooked chicken. Everything was either cold , under cooked or both. To top it off the cooks who broght out the food loudly stated she didn't care about it when they were finally bring some food out because they get off soon. The whole time with a big grin looking at us. Have eaten here before but will never be back. If this is how they treat you customers I don't know how they have survived this long. read more

The ingredients were not fresh. When we explained the problem they took a mere $2 off the price of a $12.99 meal. We should have known when we walk in and the place was empty. I got to have the breakfast buffet here for the first time while there on vacation late last year and was sold! The sausage gravy and biscuits were fantastic and their cinnamon buns are equally great! I went back last month while visiting Amish Country for dinner and LOVED the broasted chicken! Fantastic family owned establishment. Delicious baked goods and breakfast buffet. Kid friendly atmosphere that includes a working train that rallys above you while you eat. My favorite is the beef roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. Homemade bread comes free with the meal. Everything's fresh and homemade. Nothing artificial or prepackaged here. Sometimes, stop in for just the soup and salad bar. The homemade soups are delicious; especially the chili, bean soup, and vegetable beef soup. The salad bar has things you don't find anymore like pickled eggs and beets. The gift shop sells handmade quilts, pot holders, purses, jewelry, and much more. Very pleasant eating atmosphere. Really good, simple home cooking. Just what you would expect from an Amish/Mennonite restaurant. The salad bar is fresh and has some interesting items ( try the pea salad, the 4-bean and the cucumber salad). The soups are home made, usually using up the leftovers for vegetable beef or creamy potato, but that's what your Grandma would have done, too. I am not a fan of the cooked-til-it-falls-apart beef but many people are and it is flavorful. I am a fan of their broasted (fried) chicken! My mother loves the liver and onions, which they cook just right. I'm sure the other menu items are fine, but I never get past the chicken dinner! If you order cod, or shrimp or salmon at a restaurant in Holmes County you should not be surprised if it tastes like it was frozen (seriously?) Order what they're famous for and you won't go far wrong. We never get the buffet, just the salad bar with an entree off the menu. We like the bread, especially whole wheat, better than the rolls, but that's a matter of taste. Don't forget dessert here. Best pies I've found in the county! Chocolate, coconut, and banana cream are all favorites. If they have raspberry cream, get some! All the fruit pies are outstanding. Can you tell we've been here a few times and tried a lot of them? We ate here over Thanksgiving and it was incredible. A great family atmosphere, friendly staff, and clearly homemade food. For Thanksgiving they offered an all-you-can-eat family style meal with turkey, chicken and all the side dishes. We even got homemade pie and the pumpkin was great! An excellent authentic Amish restaurant with real Amish servers and cooks. The restaurant is very unique and a little off the beaten path but well worth it. We love the salad bar here with your choice of four soups. All are amazing! My family and I have been detouring our way through Shreve on our way back to New York City for the last ten years just to stop at the Des Dutch Essenhaus. You never find restaurants like this anymore because of their location. The restaurant has great food for such a small town atmosphere. You are surrounded by local flavor and amish dinning tradition. My favorite was the broasted chicken and salad bar that is decently priced. My family and I would recommend above any chain restaurant and other local place in the area.
