I just had lunch here, Wednesday 4-08-26 around 11am, the server's name was I believe Betty. From a view standpoint this is one of the best, if not the best dining room view in the state. They let me have a window table on request. For $14.99 you can get their salad bar only, the dinner and lunch buffet is $19.99. From a value standpoint you can't beat that. A buffet can't get any better than this, they also have a menu that you can order off of. This review is for their Walnut Creek location, there is also a location right off of I-71. It's been two years since I've been to Walnut Creek Der Dutchman. Wife and I had dinner there on June 1st. We asked for a window seat view and was easily granted that at 4pm. We chose to order off the menu instead of the buffet because we chose for better dinning. Salad and bread came to the table and was delish! As we enjoyed, we overheard the table behind us complain about lukewarm chicken. Kind of disappointing to overhear but we figured it came from the buffet. Our dinners took a while to come out so we assumed ours would be just fine. WRONG! I ordered three-piece dark meat, and it was lukewarm and very dry, like it sat under a heat lamp for some odd reason. My wife ordered three-piece white meat and found it extremely dried out and the skin was very dark almost burned like it stayed too long in the oven. I don't understand what is going on in the kitchen, but this is NOT the Der Dutchman that we've known in the past. It was always a pleasure to enjoy home cooked meals there. I'm very sorry to give such a bad review on a place we've loved to eat at but I believe knowledge is power and Der Dutchman should be looking at these two issues with summer travel upon them. read more

We've been coming to Der Dutchman for a few years now, a couple times a year. It's a consistent place where you know what you're going to get and while it might not be Michelin starred, there's something to be said for that. The food is good quality, and my toddler especially enjoys the broasted chicken and noodles from the buffet. The view out of the panoramic windows on one side of the dining room are stunning throughout the seasons, including winter. The staff members are friendly and have been lovely to my girl-both as a newborn and now a one year old. We like coming here after a busy day around Amish Country, like Hershberger's and Sheiyah Market (which is less than 10 mins away!). We hope to get here early enough for a brunch buffet one of these days! read more

The food was fresh and delicious. I had chicken breast which was very moist, mashed potatoes, corn and green beans. The rolls were huge but delicious, I forgot what I ordered for dessert but enjoyed my entire dinner. The waitress was friendly and checked with us regularly for anything we needed. This place is located in the heart of an Amish town and is quite spacious. It's very well-maintained and can seat a large number of people, with even private party rooms available. Great buffet experience. My favorite of the Amish buffets in the area. The restaurant is quite large. Even if the parking lot is packed, it's usually a short wait for a table. Lines at the buffet can get long if they are super busy but move pretty quickly. Always get the buffet. Rolls are brought to the table. The table has butter, Apple butter, peanut butter and jam available for the buns. They are soft, usually a little warm and so good. The buffet includes a nice salad bar with the usual salad toppings. Also includes local faves like pickled beets and eggs, various salads like macaroni, potato, egg, ham, 3 bean and more. Couple jello type desserts on the salad bar. If ordering from the menu, can opt to add the salad bar side for a reasonable amount. The hot buffet always includes mashed potatoes and stuffing with different gravies. The corn is fabulous. Usually both a baked and fried chicken, roast, pork, fish and more. Don't skip the Amish noodles. This visit they had a peach cobbler and bread pudding. The server, Bev, was so sweet and attentive. Made for a great experience. Manager (or maybe the hostess?) also stopped by the table to check on me. Noticed them stop by several other tables. Nice to see they care about the customer experience. Finished with a visit to the bakery. Got a date pudding to have later that night as well as a fry pie. Was so full from the buffet, the date dessert became lunch the next day. The hot food buffet always has at least three meats including broasted chicken and several sides to compliment any meal choice. Ordering off the menu is also very good. This was my first time eating in Amish Country, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Der Dutchman is a huge restaurant and it was full even at 2:30 for a late lunch. Server was fine, not very personable but not mean or anything. The complimentary bread was great. I ordered the chicken pot pie and my girlfriend ordered the noodles over mash. I'll say the reason this review gets 3 stars is because the pot pie was killer; so good and exactly what I was looking for! The noodles over mash, however, was a huge disappointment. The mash was not great and tasted from a box, and the noodles had a bit of an artificial flavor as well. We ended up taking only a few bites before deciding it wasn't even good enough to eat. We asked the server if there was a way to get that part of the meal comped, or at least discounted, being that neither of us liked it nor ate it. They ended up giving us 40% off of that dish. It's something, but honestly I was expecting to get the dish completely comped (they run a buffet as well and are not at a loss for potato's and noodles). We ended our meal by getting the pie trio: we got the lemon meringue, apple, and peach. The pies were good - not amazing. There are always two things that are true when you go to Der Dutchman: You eat way too much and you wish you could have more. I love their broasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and salad bar, but always go for the buffet so that I can also have a little bit of cream corn, a little bit of noodles, a bite or two of beets, and a spoonful of bread pudding. There are lots of Amish restaurants in the area, but this is the best. I really like their new entrance and seating plan. The service is fast and friendly. The food lacks value at 19 dollars not including drink and we only had two plates not full to try everything. The cherry crumble wasn't great the bread pudding was ok. I mean for the price they should give you a dessert or have a couple wow entrees, or don't charge for the drink. I haven't been back since 2023 and now I remember why. It's entering MEH territory and overpriced. Even though the place was not packed, it took a long time to get seated. Waitress moved like a snail and was minimally attentive. Choices were few and some mystery fatty meat floating around in a pan of water had me losing my appetite. Broasted chicken was meaty but dried out. Sorry it's is not that special, it's average. Better salad bars at Rubys and way more choices at Golden Coral that even includes steak. Apple crisp was good but the entire pan was scarfed up by one gluttonous person. One dessert choice at a buffet? People have said it's not authentic anymore and is tasting more commercially prepared. I would have to agree. Not a destination trip for me any longer. I will look for alternatives nearby when I'm in the area. If you go more than once, you may be underwhelmed the next time staring at the same food again. Overpriced and low choices. Losing steam as the draw to Walnut Creek area , in my opinion ,but there will always be first timers,just not as many repeat customers when they get tired of the same old stuff. When I'm in Ohio Amish country, this is one of my go to restaurants. First of all, if you're lucky enough to get a window seat, the view of Amish Country is beautiful. I've been here during Covid when the buffet was closed and they were serving the salad bar to you. I love their salad bar whether they are serving me or I'm serving myself. There are beets and I love beets. My last visit was in July and the buffet was back. It was perfect because i brought my sister. It was her first time so the buffet was perfect. And I know exactly what I like and I was able to get a little bit of everything. I enjoy the broasted chicken, stuffing, and noodles. It's all so delicious. The service is always friendly and prompt. They really know how to treat you here. Don't be discouraged if you walk up and there's a line. It goes pretty fast because the restaurant is huge! I went here based on the raving Yelp reviews and rating, but found it to be a disappointment. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and waited in line for about 30-40 minutes before being seated. Our waitress was pretty entertaining so I'd give her 5 stars if I could! She had our whole table laughing with her dry humor. The menu is pretty simple with all of the things that you would expect. They have a buffet and salad bar, you can order family style, or just order dinner for yourself. They do provide dinner rolls to each table. The rolls were made of wheat and hit the spot. I ordered the broasted chicken breast with mashed potatoes and noodles. The chicken was definitely the best part of my meal, no complaints there. The noodles were just okay. The "real" mashed potatoes were horrible a huge disappointment. Literally the worst mashed potatoes that I've ever had. I've had instant mashed potatoes from the box that were way better than that slop. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't advertise all over their menu that the mashed potatoes are real. We have gone here for years. The last few times have gotten worse and worse. Yesterday the Chicken was dry and over cooked. Roast beef was dry. They had some Meatballs that were also dry and over cooked. Coconut Shrimp (how Amish) that you guessed it over cooked. The salad bar was good. As I said we have come here for many years and it has slowly going downhill. For the money (18.99) it was a disappointment. The service was good.
