Located upstairs in the historic Trolley Square is Desert Edge, a really neat little brewery. It was laid back, with 70's-80's classic rock music playing overhead. Exposed brick, industrial charm with neat character. Brewery equipment can be seen through their windows. We ordered ourselves up some beers; they have a nice assortment on tap. I enjoyed a Happy Valley Hefeweizen, with a lemon wedge. Crisp and refreshing. No wonder it was Utah's very first GABF gold medal winner! My husband ordered a couple lagers. For the 20 oz, it was only $1 more than the pint. :) I ordered the l open-faced sirloin sandwich, and it was heavenly. A delightful umami bomb. Served atop two pieces of fresh focaccia, it had a tarragon sauce, then a bed of tender sirloin strips, topped with sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions, then crispy scallions over the top with blue cheese crumbles. It was delightful. My french fries were a little cold, but tasty nonetheless. Generous portions, with a tasty side of fry sauce. My husband ordered the special, a blackened chicken and pepper-jack sandwich. It was delicious too. It had flavorful sautéed chilies and caramelized onions, with a chipotle aioli. The chicken was cooked just right. I had a bite, and it was awesome. He ordered the side salad with blue cheese dressing, and it looked good. Lots of garden veggies. The dessert menu said all their desserts are made using the classic recipes from the old Red Butte Cafe. We split a slice of the Chocolate Decadence, a flourless chocolate cake. It was a nice dense dessert, with satisfyingly rich semi-sweet/bittersweet chocolate layers. It's important to note the service. The waitstaff were very quick to return with things we requested (napkins, beers, cake, etc), and were super friendly. Different people waited on our table, which confused me for a split second, but we ended up really liking that about them. They were all working together as a team. This place luckily has not changed a lot since the 1980s. The beer selection was bountiful and luckily the food hasn't changed either. They have kept the basics from back in the day, their Rare Roast Beef Sandwich, their pasta salads, and their French Onion Soup, are three of the menu that have survived time and are still great choices... I highly recommend The Pub, for a place to get a bite to eat and a drink. read more

It was quite empty, but having been an Utah holiday, as to be expected. If you are not from Utah... this is a "restaurant". You must order food to buy any alcohol. Desert Edge has been our go-to for Sunday brunch for years. We take people who visit from out of town there. No-hassle seating, great brunch food options and you can't beat $3 mimosas and bloodies, staff are always friendly and service is awesome. Can't recommend them enough! read more

The food was really good and the waitress and hostess were very nice. I was a little bummed kids aren't allowed on the patio, but the indoor seating is nice too. The bathroom and dining area was clean and had good vibes/lighting. I docked a star for a few reasons. The drinks were a bit small- about half size compared to most other restaurants. We had to wait on refills a couple times. They also forgot my mom's entree so we all had our food and had to wait about 10 minutes for them to prepare her food. I'm not sure what happened with that and they did not offer any reconciliation for the extended wait on her sandwich. I got the Asian Salmon salad and it was amazingly delicious! My husband got the Southwest Chicken salad. He liked it but the chicken was dry and the dressing a bit lackluster (especially compared to my peanut vinaigrette that came with my salad!). My toddler and baby shared a kids burger, fruit, and chips, along with a side of fries. My mom got a half club sandwich with fruit. I didn't end of getting a pic of her food. My mother in law LOVES Desert Edge because of how consistent this place is. They do a good job and bring out the food hot each time. My husband and MIL are really big on temperature, so that's very important to us! They have Diet Coke but the brew is a little less carbonated than I'd like and they bring it in a small glass. We started with chips and salsa. The roasted salsa was smoky with a little kick. Really good! My MIL got the pastrami and Swiss panini. This is her FAVORITE sandwich! She would give it a 5/5. My SIL had the grilled turkey and cranberry. It's like thanksgiving on a sandwich. I've seen her get this sandwich multiple times because she likes it so much. They both got the kale salad with goat cheese on the side. Normally this is really good, but today it didn't have enough dressing. My husband got the sirloin open face. He loves the flavors especially the carmelized onions. I got the turkey avocado sandwich. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread. The fries though were 5/5. I would definitely recommend this place. Perfect small brewery to stop in for a pint and a lovely dinner. I got the Fjord Explorer which was delish (I love a crisp beer!) and the open face Sirloin sandwich with fries. The sando was actually nirvana on a plate, and the fries were deliciously crispy. The service was super friendly and attentive and I sat in a cozy corner booth where I could look out the window while the sun was going down. The music was playing but not too loud, and other tables were just close enough to feel comfy but not so close I felt like an honorary dinner guest. Highly recommend! read more

My wife had the Turkey sandwich which was also really good. Add in a couple of their own brews and it was a great lunch. Atmosphere: we were there mid-day, and it wasn't crowded. But we sat out on the patio and as the sun was getting low it was hot, but it was beautiful. Service: Great. The young gentleman who served us got our drinks and order to us quickly. We came here to try and get some essence of the old Red Butte Cafe, which we miss desperately. We return because there is never a wait. I have not found that any of my Red Butte favorites have been recreated here to my satisfaction. The French onion soup is basically cheese with a little broth on top. Depending on what you are looking for, that could be incredible or a disappointment. The good news is that it is not a bowl of soggy bread, which always ruins French Onion. Came on a busy Saturday night and the wait was about fifteen minutes. We looked at the cool store next door and time passed. We were sat on the very west booths where it was freezing! I didn't take off my jacket the whole time. Service was slow and my fries and french onion soup came out cold. I didn't complain about the fries but the soup was ridiculous. What was worse is they forgot about it and I didn't get it 15 minutes until our meal had been served. My friends said the salmon salad was ok but they've had better. Maybe they were having a off night. They should have at least comped my food or something but service was frazzled. Pastas are all delicious here and the French onion soup used to b better but it's still good. Reasonable prices and delicious beer. Located 2nd level of trolley square on the west side. Came here to grab some drinks and food with friends. It was a pretty chill place to be, especially during the weekday. I love their patio area. Service here was great. Our waitress was very quick in getting our stuff and kept checking on us if we needed anything. She would also give suggestions on beers and cocktails if needed. The food here was good as well. Tried this for the first time for dinner on a Monday night. The food ranged from good to borderline inedible, the majority sadly being the ladder. The good: -Beer was great, was the main reason we ate here and did not disappoint. -Both of our entrees were actually pretty good. I had the beef dip, wife had the chicken salad. No complaints on either. The bad: -We had the "poutine" for our app. I put that in parentheses because you can hardly call it poutine. It was basically cheese fries sitting in a pool of watery gravy. They didn't necessarily taste awful, but it was a poor attempt at poutine. The ugly: -The French fries were way way way overcooked. Almost inedible they were so crunchy. -Had a brownie for dessert and this was the absolute lowlight of the meal. It was hard as a rock, tasted like it had been sitting out for a week. I had to chug half my glass of water just to get the few bites I took down. Overall I found myself less than impressed with my meal. Given the good beer and entrees and great service I'd give it a second chance, but they are on the last strike. read more

I love this place for Sunday Brunch (not a beer drinker so can't comment on the suds). It's a complicated menu and they do it all well, from traditional American pub fare to some great Mexican dishes. Brunch on the patio in spring is about as good as it gets in Salt Lake City. read more

When he took our order, there was no introduction, welcome, hello... literally walked up and said "do you want drinks?" We ordered our drinks and without another word... he walked away and he said over his shoulder, our soup of the day is Potato. It was a bit awkward. When we placed our food order, it was the same cold experience... just a tough night for him. On to the food. Started off with the French Onion Soup. If you are a fan of this type of soup, I highly recommend you grab a bowl of this soup or add a cup to your sandwich order. Great flavor! Highlight of the night. The Mexican Dip was good. It's a slight spin on the traditional French Dip sandwich. The portion was large and the bread they use was great. My wife went with the Build Your Own Burger option, which was a bit underwhelming. She selected Pepper Jack Cheese and Bacon. The burger presentation is very appealing, but it really lacked any flavor and the bacon was undercooked. Kind of a bummer, because is looked awesome. It was kind of a high and low experience. Everyone has a bad day from time to time, so our server deserves a break. The burger... meh, it wasn't great, but it's only one item that missed the mark. I love this place. The location is wonderful and the menu is diverse. I love the patio but don't quite understand why teenagers can't go out there. My only complaint is the service. You don't have one server and you have to go up to the counter to pay at the end. It was that way when the place was just called The Pub. It just makes it awkward when you have to split the check. Their nachos are the BEST in town. The pasta salad wasn't as great as it usually is but the sandwich, side of vinaigrette and fries with Utah fry sauce were all great. Service was decent, food looked nice... but taste? Agh, sorry, didn't hit the mark! I ordered a special called the hot pasta, and I believe it appears on the menu quite often. It looked darn good, but the pasta and sauce were bland. The mix of veggies served on top was pretty spicy and the chicken was dry. The dish felt very odd because the majority of the plate was bland, and then you've got this one section that's got too much of a contrasting flavor going on. My company had a portobello sandwich with a side of Italian pasta and chips. The sandwich ingredients were on point, but the toast of the bread wasn't. The bread was so toasted that the crunch was too much for our gums and made eating painful. Additionally, the tomatoes and spread made the bread soggy on the inside too soon. Was the pasta bland? Yes. Oof! I've known of Desert Edge's existence for so many years that it's kind of weird I hadn't visited before. I don't love it, I don't hate it, but I really didn't like it much. I don't find overly bland and poorly textured food appealing. Maybe the soups are good? Maybe the nachos are good? Maybe other sandwiches aren't too toasted? I might find out one day. Nice bar area. The booths and bar are separated by plexiglass which is Covid safe. They ask that all patrons where a mask when walking around but you can take it off at your table. They have solid bar and spirits selection and typical bar style menu. I wasn't wowed by the food but it was okay. We got the fish tacos (2) which comes with rice, beans, and small salad. The rice was a little undercooked-crunchy. Definitely going to give this place another try but isn't my first choice. read more

My most recent visit sampled soup, salad, and a salmon entree--each solid. Service was good with a team approach. Absolutely loved this place. We sat out on the patio, which was so nice and pleasant. Their beer is fantastic- I tied the Hefeweizen and the Pilsner and would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite. The French onion soup is to die for and the daily pasta salad for Friday had a delicious balance of pasta, prosciutto, cheese, and tomatoes. Service was friendly and prompt.
