I was recommended to talk to Mike (the manager) by another shop to address attempting to bring my lifted Tacoma back to stock height. Based on some body modifications that he noticed, returning to stock wasn't going to be an option. He spent 1.5 hours with me trying to figure out the right solution to replace the existing lift kit and get the Tacoma back to handling and riding well, and lowering as much as possible. We decided on a 4" rough country kit and Fox struts all around. An appointment and 3 days later, everything was in, with good communication all the way through and notifying me if any misc parts need ordering. Everything came out great and I'm very satisfied. Mike is a great guy, very professional and made me feel I was attended to and my patronage and truck is important. I purchased some Rigid lights for my Bronco and had them installed around 6-7 months ago for an off road trip in March. After the trip, I noticed that some of the lights had condensation. I called Desert Rat to find out about warranty replacement. The person on the phone took my information and told me he would contact Rigid and let me know about warranty replacement. When I didn't hear from anyone for a couple of months, I called back. I was told that Rigid prioritizes new sales rather than warranties. He's get back to me when he hears from them. Today is September 2nd, and still not hearing anything further, I called DR again, and left a message since no one was answering the phone. I had Desert Rat remove the lift pads from my Jeep Wrangler. I commend them for being able to take on the job short notice and they did a good job. Two things bothered me, tho. They final bill was $100 higher than what was originally estimated. The bigger issue is they decided (without consulting me first) to reuse the old parts rather than the new ones I provided. When spending $450 for the work, I'm not gonna sweat $150 in new parts. So, I had to return them with a 20% restocking fee too. read more

I was looking for a place to get truck parts installed on my Ram and initially tried to go to 4-Wheel Parts based on some of the reviews I had seen online. After calling them and being put on hold, and then not receiving anything back from them after calling again and leaving them an email and STILL not hearing anything back, I choose to take my business elsewhere. I called up Desert Rat and they were easily able to schedule me an appointment first thing in the morning and finished my truck up the same afternoon. Their customer service was super helpful and friendly as well as top notch work installing my intake, exhaust, and a bed cover. Poor service, poor communication. I wanted a cargo rack and rear trail rack installed on my Jeep Wrangler. The service rep came back multiple times with quotes for parts that -- when I looked them up online -- were not compatible with my Jeep. When he finally got the right parts, I was told they were a little more expensive than the others I'd been quoted but the others were back-ordered. These would arrive in 3 weeks. I agreed to the quoted parts and price. They took 3 months to arrive. At the 8-week mark my rep mentioned that the parts were being custom-made, something that hadn't been mentioned previously. When they finally came in, I asked if all the parts were in and I was assured they were. I was told it would be a few hours to install. It took 3 days. On the 3rd day I was told the problem was that they didn't get the license plate bracket that goes with the bumper and so they were fabricating one. The end result looked like something a 15-year old would make in shop class, a piece of sheet metal sticking through the center of the spare tire with an LED wired to the top of it. As I paid (more than $3000 for the setup), I was asked how I liked it. I said I wasn't thrilled. "What can we do to make this right?" I was asked. I said I would have preferred the proper bracket that was designed to go with the bumper rather than a makeshift one. "We'll make that happen," I was assured. A few weeks later I got a call that the bracket had arrived. I dropped off the vehicle and a few hours later got a call it was ready. It looked beautiful, very professional. "That'll be $479.00" I was told. At no point was I told that I was being charged for the part, nor was I ever given a quote for the part and labor. Pro-tip: If you're going to charge a customer for the privilege of letting you "make it right" for them, you may want to mention how much it's going to cost them. Especially if it's nearly $500 for a license plate bracket. I'm giving 2 stars only because the work is lovely (albeit after the clumsy fabrication was corrected). If you choose to work with this business, get everything in writing (especially if it's implied that it gratis) before you have work done and be prepared to follow up endlessly until it's done right or your spirit is broken. read more

Out of everybody I talked to in Tucson about getting a lift kit installed on my truck ....these guys were the best - everybody else that installs lift kits kind of made it seem like it was a problem to do. These guys hooked me up and then went a couple extra miles for me and did some other stuff to and I really appreciate Cory that works at the Palo Verde Desert Rat-I've never had an off-road truck nor had anything like it. I recently moved to Tucson and was unfamiliar with any off road shops. Prior to moving I inherited 1986 CJ7. This is truly a Frankenstein Jeep. It is a great machine, but was in need of some mechanic repair. I took it to Dessert Rat on October 20th, 2021. I gave them one direction - Make it reliable. Sean on the front counter was great and took time to LISTEN to me. He understood where I was coming from and said Desert Rat could meet my expectations. This was a complicated service request that had multifaceted issues. I was regularly contacted by Sean throughout the repair process. As issues presented themselves, he reached out to give costs and timelines. This eliminated any surprises or sticker shock. The overall customer service was excellent. Love the fact their distribution warehouse is right behind this location. If you can find it in a catalog, chances are they have it in stock. Bestop and Warn products are always in stock. Prices are great. Their service and install techs have gotten me out of a lot of jams. Their expert staff quickly diagnosed a recent problem and quickly made the fix. Went to other offroad stores to get a 6.5" Zone lift. Ended up at Desert Rat on Palo Verde. They were extremely knowledgeable in the parts my truck required that other shops were not. They were hundreds of dollars cheaper then the other shops I visited to put nuts and bolts together. The lift kit was not delivered by my appointment date and was nicely compensated for the delay. George Tapia was very curious and professional and makes you feel welcome and comfortable. Went back for Power Steps and again was treated very good by George to get it accomplished. Truck came out outstanding and drives very well with zero alignment issues. Can't go wrong with the expertise these guys have. read more

Absolutely the best. I originally brought my JK Wrangler to the 22nd and Kolb location because I was getting some death wobble. They were pretty booked up but Ray was going to try and fit me in on Saturday because my Jeep really needed some attention. It was getting worse and the guys told me their location on Palo Verde had some availability. I rushed there after work and Louie stayed with me longer than he needed to to get me set up. They got me a fresh set of tires, corrected my death wobble, and made my Jeep drive better than it did the day I bought it. I got a great deal on tires to boot. I'm new to Tucson and this was a stellar experience. Everyone I interacted with treated me like family. I'll definitely be back. What a painful ordeal....both mentally and financially......2001 dodge 1500 w/96 Dana 60/70......wanted 4.88 gears... Detroit's front and rear....new outer bearings/seals in rear....new rotors/rear shoes.....posi lok axle disconnect.....dropped of truck 7/28 was told about 3 days...cool....19 business days later (8/19) it was done......kinda.......they blamed my "Frankenstein truck".........I chock it up to incompetence(front office) and apathy(tech)........picked up truck drove it home heard gear whine 35-45 mph......got home tried out my new posi lok kicked it in 4 lo and it was making the most god awful banging/grinding noise....WHAATTT...I was thinking the sleeve for disconnect was grinding on axle.....nope.... took it back to desert rat they messed with the t-case linkage to no avail......fucked up t-case....WHAAATTT.... just before I dropped it off I took it out to a steep hill to see how far I could creep up said hill so I could compare open diffs to locked up diffs and it was fine.....tech told me it was working fine as he found a hill on their test drive and he said he dug 4 big holes checking to make sure lockers were doing their job.....what he failed to mention was that's when lo range grenaded.....I get it its old truck.....but talk about demoralizing dump 5000.00 into it and get back in worse shape...HELP with the cost to fix t-case NOOOO WAY......also front axle nut missing cotter pin....WHAAATT.....5/8-3/4" hole drilled in firewall in wrong place just left wide open not even a piece of tape to cover it.......WHAAATT....no grommet where the cable did go thru firewall....WHAAATTT......AAANNNNDDD it screwed up my opening archery deer season......as that is my hunting rig.........so in summary DESERT RAT SUCKS BIG TIME....AND I`M BEING REALLY SCREWED BY THIS PLACE (without Vaseline).....GOOD THING IT WAS ONLY LIKE 4800.00 OR I`D REALLY BE PISSED OFF TOO .......... Why do I always break things on my truck when i go out to have a little fun. Its not like I go every weekend but when i do, im like a magnet, i just attract the problems. Anyway I was 4 wheeling out in Reddington when my hopefulness got in the way of my common sense and i ripped a shock off the mount and bent the crap out of my control arm. I was able to limp it back home after stopping for a much needed beer and jerky break. I took my truck to the Desert Rat on Palo Verde after going to visit the 4 Wheel store on Speedway which is closer for me. I felt good at the Rat store, they spent time with me, gave me some nice options for a lift kit, their price was way better than my first stop. I got my lift and new taller tires, ive been back out to the same trail and I stopped and took a wiz ( can I say that on yelp ?) on the rock with the bad attitude that busted me up the last time. Overall im really happy with Desert Rat, have been back several times to drool on the hundreds of trick little goodies they have and when my my next geocashe adventure turns into $$$ im going back to do the winch, LED lights and a few other very necessary things ive been waiting for. read more

Bought shocks and new wheels and asked for my old rims because I thought that I might be able to recycle them. When I returned to pick up my truck they were upset that I again asked for the rims because, "You can't recycle them because they will explode in the compactor." I took them anyway, and found out that of course they are recycled, and I got over $70 for them. I wrote them an email, but they didn't bother to respond, so this must be their standard business practice. Very dishonest! read more

Had a 74 fj40. Desert rat was up the road. I stopped in looked around, they were on the fone and 2 off the desk clerks were stroking each other about their tatts. Thot they were gonna make out for a sec but they decided to say "what's goin on bro" after 20 min of me being (the only one) in the store. I did love looking around but I could do Tht in any off-road store. So we talked lights, suspension, gadgets, and as I was led to the counter to deal with my issue, (which hadn't been mentioned yet) (oh and the kids running the store felt a desire to let me know theyve been tatted, like I didn't hear the story already), I said I'm looking for a spare rim for my 74 fj40. The guy looked at me and said..., oh u mean Toyota? We don't deal with toyota. Got lots of jeep stuff tho." and he (no b.s. ) turned away and continued his convo about his sick Ass tatt. Must have been an original. Like all tatts are. So I walked out. Ffwd 12 yrs later. They worked on my new fj40. ( its probably the only 1 they've worked on) and needless to say I've had nothing but problems. Now I got nothing but love for the guy Tht actually did the work. I honestly saw him give his best. And the work came out pretty good. But the guys at the desk were full of excuses regarding other issues. In no 4x4 genius in fact im a novice. I know sum basics.. And I'm no fool. They couldn't get the brake lights to work after charging me 200 for an led set. And that's the little issue. I could make this the longest review ever, regarding the crap I was fed. I will say that they can definitely install things, but that's as far as it goes. My fj40 sat in the shop for close to a month wen I was promised 3 days. I went in to "see" the progress and every time there was a new jeep in every bay while mine was tucked in a corner due to "shipping issues". It's like taking ur car to audio express, if u just need a quick system installed, then the dollar install is right up your alley. But if you need some thought time and love put in your ride, .......
