As you pull in, easy check in inside the store and drop box for after hours

I will start by saying I was torn between a 4+ star review or a 5 and my deciding factor was that it's exactly as advertised but better (cleanest and friendliest place we stopped on our 3 week cross country trip). So why would I give less than 5? Amenities, mainly for kids. There is one nice grassy patch outside of the Rec Room for outdoor play, but no playground, basketball etc.. After driving 8 hours and kids on electronics, we always appreciate a stop over with a playground to get some outdoor play. However, adding something for kids would bring me up to 5+ stars. The air quality was very poor anyhow and we almost decided to drive straight home to the bay area, but as a solo driver with 2 kids and a grandparent with health issues along, we stayed. Glad we did as it was a very comfortable stay. I had our trip planned all the way back to WI as well as time there but started on travel plans home to CA a few days before leaving (figuring it would almost 3 weeks out). If you are traveling during these COVID days you know it's all semi trucks and RV's on the road and they all need somewhere to stay, add in those weekend local travelers and good luck finding anything on a Fri/Sat night. This was our last night on our 3 week journey and it happened to be a Friday. I spent 2 days calling, Googling and reaching out to any and every RV park and campground. I'd looked at the website and it looked like all drive through's on cement/gravel and with our little 2 person trailer, we like to pop up a tent for my 2 boys. I finally called out of desperation to ask and also check avaiability. Not only did I get the friendliest woman on the phone to talk to, but when I asked about a tent stating it looked like only gravel sites she said, "oh no, we have spaces with grass in the back"... I was so excited to hear but then had to check the dates and she said "yes" to that too! After so many "No's" from the Tahoe/Trukee/Reno areas, I was thrilled but did repeat my travel date and tent request just to make sure. I confirmed the reservation. We pulled in on August 6th to check in at the cleanest little grocery store and friendliest faces! We were led to our site which was right next to a large grassy area near the rec room and an easy pull thru site incredibly level we didn't have to unhook our truck or level side to side.. just enough space on the grass area for our tent (which is big enough for 2 queen bed) and walking distance to bathrooms/showers/ laundry which I'd also requested due to my low vision mother with other health issues and using the wet bath in our tiny trailer is very difficult for her. Bam! Desert Rose met every single one of my requests with not a single issue! I did notice there are many long term residents here. It was very quiet at night, respectful people when we were out and about with out dog the store had all of the usual camp essentials we needed. As someone that needs to eat mainly organic/gluten/dairy free, I was thrilled with the fresh eggs I found out are from one of the store employee's mom and sold fresh each day... score! I can see if you have a really big rig that getting through some of the roads could be a challenge with some of the longer RVs parking their vehicle extending into the road, but it didn't pose an issue for us and I never saw anyone trying to go one direction on a road with another coming opposite direction so it was a non-issue. Noteable: Best laundry facility we have seen in 3 weeks and the showers are full bathrooms with sinks, outlets, shower and a chair. You get your very own bathroom and they are the cleanest and roomiest of any other RV park or campground we have visited. There are cable hookups we didn't try since we were just one night, but WiFi was best of anywhere we've stayed in 3 weeks.. not enough for Netflix, but definitely worked for uploading photos to facebook finally (perhaps our tin can makes this hard, but this was the first place it worked from WiFi at a campground on my computer) We will definitely stop back if we need that last stop over on our drive home again!

I've been meaning to share my experience staying at The Desert Rose, I just hadn't gotten around to it. Now with the focus being on cleanliness and personal hygiene, I feel I need to do my part and share this outstanding little stop just outside of Reno. When I'm looking to book a campground the number one priority for me is the shower situation. Yes we have a shower in the coach and I do like it just fine, but nothing feels better than a long hot shower with hearty water pressure and plenty of room to move around. Especially after a hard day of driving; my shoulders and neck get tight wrestling the wheel in desert winds. The Desert Rose has about 9 of these private bathrooms that are immaculate. See the pics below and go ahead and zoom in. They've obviously be recently renovated by someone who knew what they're doing. The rest of the building houses laundry facilities and two additional 1/2 baths. There is also a recreation area with television and chairs, a table with chairs, selection of books, magazines, and a vending machine with snacks and beverages. All of which are again, immaculate. The pull through spots are predominantly on cement slabs, all with full hookups. The town of Fernley itself does not have much to offer; however the Walmart has everything you could need and the Raley's supermarket is a MUST. Some of the finest produce I've seen in the country and vegan alternatives throughout. If you're passing through the area, this is where you want to stay.

Our previous camping experience many years ago was not the best, but we did come during the 4th of July weekend, so it was crowded, loud and all around not a good experience. This time however, it was wonderful!! We set-up camp where we wanted and had the area practically to ourselves, serious boondocking. The weather was also perfect, hot during the day and cool during the night. We also got to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. My only gripe would be the mosquitos and even they weren't terrible. Although we didn't leave our campsite this time, we have previously visited many other parts of the lake as well as the Marina. The lake is huge and although not all of it is accessible, there are still many beaches and areas to visit and explore. I also like to stop at the Marina for ice cream. Another must stop is the Museum and Visitor Center, well worth the stop to learn more about the mysterious and rich history of the lake and the Paiute Tribe.

Winding down a very hot summer in the desert, my husband and I set out on an epic road trip. This was one of our first stops. We stayed overnight in Reno and after breakfast set out to find and see the lake. It is about a 45 minute drive from Reno to the lake. Arriving at the lake we got out and stretched our legs and had an epic view of the lake and the reservation. The lake is definitely the prettiest lake I have seen in the desert. The color is a sparkling blue with the mountains surrounding it. Various red hues dot the landscape along with brown smudges here and there. The lake is a remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan which covered approximately 8,450 square miles. The Ice Age shows various caves and rock shelters along the shoreline which indicates that Numu (Paiute) people had been living here thousands of years. John C. Fremont came upon the lake on 1/10/1844 and named the lake for the Pyramid shaped island off of the east shore. The Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation was created in 1859. The lake currently covers 125,000 acres. The Eastern shore which is home to the Pyramid Formation, Stone Mother and Anaho Island are closed to all visitors. It is only accessible to the members of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. There are stunning views of all of these formations from the western shore. On Anaho Island, there is the largest natural breeding ground for the American White Pelicans. They are protected by both the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. They say the spring is the best time to see many American White Pelicans, double crested Cormorants, California Gulls, and Great Blue Herons. Driving along the lake, we came upon the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitors Center. We learned even more about the area while touring through the center. Great exhibits! There is no admission fee to visit Pyramid Lake but permits are required for camping, fishing, or using watercraft. I am not into fishing, but the reviews here indicate that there is some terrific fishing available. The trophy fish is the Lohanton Cutthroat Trout and they are a huge draw to fisherman from all over. We made the mistake of going down to the beach and a tribe member approached us to advise us we needed to purchase a valid tribal permit to swim. We were unaware and quickly gathered our things and headed out. We really just wanted to put our feet in the water, but I understand rules are rules. This area is filled with so much history of the Numu (Paiute) people. There are many tales of lore and lots of mystery. You can feel the history here as you move about. So glad we had the opportunity to check it out.
