Don't give desert sun your credit card information at this Tacoma location. You will tell them you want to cancel your membership sign on the pad and they won't actually cancel it. They will tell you later as all the charges roll in that you never canceled and literally fight you on it. It happened to me and my partner as well. I've had a membership here for almost 11 years. I've always had a platinum package and anytime I needed to take a break or when I've given birth to any of my kids they put my package on hold and I've paid the same price for my membership the entire time! They always have really good bulbs and change them frequently. Good deals on lotions when they have sales as well!! read more

Finally, a 5 star desert sun! I've been to most of the south sound locations and this one is by far my favorite! Gabby the store manager was super friendly, educated, and never pushed sales on me. The selections of beds here are the best too. They have red light , blue light, the wellness pod , soon to be teeth whitening, and the usual tanning beds. Everyone who works here is SO nice. I come in a couple times a year to get a spray tan before vacation/event and i always love talking to whoever is behind the desk. They never push me to buy a bunch of things, but they do ask if I want to buy a spray tan package (maybe I should??? lol). Sometimes they are nice sometimes they are rude or standoffish. I live right by here and don't come to this one much. Very high turn around. I've been here over 6 years and it's almost always diff people every time I come in. Not the best experience today checking in and having to wait bc they didn't hear what I said, especially on my way to work. They had someone go in before me even though I was before her all bc he didn't hear what I had asked for. The girl didn't even care and said you have to wait I gave someone else the bed first. RUDE. So PISSED sitting here. A couple mins is turning into almost 10. Will d contacting the manager In addition to waiting, I was waiting for NO REASON. I told him my color of one clear 2-3 times. He said one is broken and the other one only does bronze. He had me waiting for the bronze one that isn't broken for 10 mins after not hearing what I asked for and other people going before me. I could have NOT waited at all!! The other broken one apparently only does clear which is what I was waiting for. Also I've had 3 times the spray not consistently come out of the three sprayers and basically ruined the spray tan color. They suggested I just take a shower when I get home. Most the employees here have horrible customer service and only want to SELL YOU on things you don't even need(if they actually looked at my account they wouldn't just sell me anything seeing as I only purchase certain things and barely tan as it is.) I have a MUCH BETTER experience in Lakewood. Their beds aren't constantly broken. The medium beds in Tacoma sometimes the face bulbs don't work and they don't even check it before putting you in a broken bed. It's also way way cleaner in LAKEWOOD. There's usually hand marks on the top one from people pushing it open getting out and they don't even take the time to wipe it consistently. Seriously good customer service isn't that hard. And learning to deal with issues much more professionally. read more

Cleanliness is not taken very seriously as I have gone to the same desert sun for the past month and it looks like no one has ever clean the acrylics. Since I've been going no one has ever told me I need to wait 10 minutes for anything to sanitize. they usually barley wipe it down. I can take more pictures next time to show you:) Went in today an no one even cleaned my plastic head piece that I lay my head down on. If I had a choice I'd go to a different salon but UNFORTUNATELY this is the only one close to my house. read more

I have been to this location twice and both times were disappointing. On Tuesday I went with my friend and really wanted to do a platinum bed as I soon found out there was a pretty long wait so I decided to sign up for the wellness pod and I really wanted to be able to use it. Didn't get to use it yesterday and then today I found out you have to schedule an appointment there in advanced so Needless to say it's upsetting that I paid for something and have yet to be able to use it. My advice go to a smaller location that isn't as busy. My normal location is pretty quiet and if there's a wait for anything it wouldn't be for very long. You can't wait inside either so 20 min in the cold or burning gas in your car to stay warm. I personally won't be back to this location the people working there weren't personable at all. read more

I've been tanning with Desert Sun for 3 or 4 years. I have had a gold membership the entire time. I frequently buy lotions or other things when that comes with a 3 month boost to platinum. A few months ago, I was told if I paid for my year of gold membership up front, I would be given a year of upgrade to platinum beds. I had to specifically ask if there were any other fees, and I was then told I had to pay $5/month to have my account frozen. Due to the high employee turnover, I asked for a printed out itemized receipt so that I wouldn't have any problems. I was only given a receipt showing that my membership was frozen. I should have changed my mind then, but I did not. Fast forward a few months - I was out of town and not tanning often. I tried to use a platinum bed and was told I didn't have any. I explained the situation and a girl (that seemed like she was in charge) said she would call the girl who sold it to me, who no longer works there, and get back to me in 2 days. It's been 9 days and I haven't heard from anyone. I went back two days ago and tried to use a platinum. I was again told I couldn't and given the number to call corporate. But I don't want to call corporate - I bought this at this location, and I want to handle it here, especially because I was told they would call me to resolve it. I then asked what I would need to do to cancel everything and get a refund on what I had paid and was again told to call corporate. This is terrible customer service. I understand it's the nature of the business for there to be a high turnover rate at a tanning salon, but I think they don't print out anything and make you sign everything electronically (without letting you read it) so there is plausible deniability if they don't want to honor something later. I guess I will have to call corporate since no one at this location will follow-up as they've said they would. I'm hoping they'll let me cancel. The only reason I didnt give 5 star is because i notice that their computer system is down often and many times i haven't been able to tan or had to wait while it got rebooted. This place screwed me over several times. Before my package was up this girl convinces me to buy another package. She gives me a deal of $30 (approx. amt.) for three months unlimited tanning. I tell her I want to take a break from tanning so she tells me she can put it on hold and I can activate it later (like during the winter). So I agree and come back months later to find out it was just worth 5 tans. I told the blond chick that I had been lied to so she told me to talk to her manager. The manager tells me she will give me some free (crappy) lotion and give me a month unlimited of conventional beds if I pay the difference amount. I agree and she said she even added one of each of the tanning beds for me to try out for my troubles which I thought was pretty sweet. I come back later and ask to use one of the other tanning beds she said I had on my account and the girl tells me I don't have anything besides the conventional. I'm like are you kidding me I've been lied to AGAIN. Then she tells me that those last only a certain amount of time which the MANAGER had FAILED to tell me (although I highly doubt she put them on there in the first place). Don't go to this place they are always trying to sell you crap and LIE to you so they can get money from you the best they can. Even when I tell them I have a lot of lotion they still try to throw the "but its _% off" or "do you know about the ___ bronzer". They always make it awkward when trying to hustle you into buying lotion you CLEARLY don't need or want. They are just so f***cking annoying with how they are constantly trying to sell you stuff. They have even screwed my manager over. They sold him a package worth $200+ dollars then because they had "changed owners" that package went bye-bye and he had to buy another one (which he obviously didn't and never returned to Desert Sun again). If I could give this place a 0 I totally would. NEVER GOING BACK TO ANY DESERT SUN EVER!!! read more

This is the worst place to go tanning. The girls are rude and the high pressure sales pitches are annoying! I had just purchased tanning as well as lotion after being hounded EVERY time I walked in the door to tan! After spending $230.00 to get them off my back, I was pressured again the NEXT day after spending that money! Really?!!!! Tanning is supposed to be a relaxation for your clients....not being uncomfortable to walk in the door because you know it is going to be like walking on a used car lot! We are adults tanning and we are fully aware of when we need to buy more tans as well as more lotion......omg lighten up. I will never step foot in a Desert Sun again. read more

This is really not the greatest Desert Sun. I usually use the medium level beds, and they are not as nice as ones I've used at other locations. The fans barely work, so I was incredibly hot. And the bronzing bulbs aren't as strong. Only plus side is that the employees are usually pretty friendly. I get a better value for my membership at other locations. If all Desert Suns were like this place, I wouldn't even bother. Luckily, the ones in Gig Harbor are super nice. read more

I have been to quite a few Desert Sun's in my day and I am pretty partial to this one. The ladies working here are always friendly, and helpful. The salon is clean and the beds/bulbs are kept up as well. I also love that they have all the options, stand-up, traditional, medium, 12 minute super, and 22 minute super, as well as a few options with spray tans. I went in for a tan around 7:45 this evening. I felt the lady was being over-personal and interrogating. Then she asked me if I had my eye protection. I said yes. Then she asked me to show it to her. I felt so violated at that point that I essentially refused and walked out. I'm a customer, not a child in your kindergarten class. I'll find a different place to tan. She seemed annoyed that I walked in. Maybe they had the beds all cleaned for the day. read more

I have has a membership here for almost 2 years for their medium beds, although I am in love with their super... I think 90% of their girls are extremely friendly and genuine but there's 1 or 2 I always get negative vibes from. They do push on the upselling and make you feel like you're an idiot for not buying... But other than those 1 or 2 girls, I've always loved coming to this desert sun. Was a little nervous about coming here after seeing some reviews, but honestly they're all wrong in regards to my experience. Both staff I met were super friendly and helpful to me, and didn't try to push any promotions (which are what a lot of bad reviews consist of). I just needed a spray tan for a festival and they were great! Loved using the Versaspa Pro, and got a discount on a primer. Also, I think the prices are great compared to some other places! Overall, awesome experience, and if I ever need a spray tan and I'm in the area; I will be coming back. :) read more

I was a member for 4 months but I canceled my membership for several reasons. 1) Poor customer service. The staff is so rude that I hated going in every time when I went. Service here is terrible and the two versa machines are often broken altogether or provide a partial spray tan. What's worse, the staff couldn't care less. Even if you complain to them directly, they regard you with disdain and take no responsibility. I've been here many times,and most of the staff are young and seem inexperienced. Today, for the first time ever, I bought a tanning membership, at Desert Sun Tanning, in Tacoma (Lincoln Plaza S. 38th St & S. Steele St). I did my research on Yelp, so this is why selected this tanning company. June, one of the staff members, was great! I'm a newbie, so I needed to learn about the whole process of tanning, which she did a super job explaining to me. In addition, for my own health & safety, she recommended the heat level & time I should start-off with. June, was very patient showing me pricing & answered all my questions. She was very thorough & even took me back to the tanning bed to show me the equipment & how to operate it. She made a reasonable effort to make certain I understood, what I needed to understand. She seemed very knowledgeable!! In my observation, the entire facility seemed clean & sanitary, which is a big plus for a public facility. Nice atmosphere, great decor, & top 40 music. I paid for the "Gold Membership" & think I made the correct decision, so far. I took a look at the "Spray Tan" option, but feel kind of weird using something, like that. The only negative issue I had, was the price of the lotion, at $42. For purchasing the lotion, I got a free pair of eye-protection, which is $10 without the lotion. I didn't know better, however, I looked it up online and found the same exact lotion for $25, when I got home. I accept some responsibility, for not asking for a less expensive lotion or maybe asking where I could find something for less, but it would've been nice if I was offered a lotion that was near or close to what anyone can purchase, online. I understand the staff may be trying to earn more, on commission, so I can consider that. Let's just say, I can't take it back & I've learned my lesson!! (For purpose of commerce & a supporter of business, I'll let you do your own research on tanning salon pricing & features) If it wasn't for the price of the lotion, I would've been more than happy to give Desert Sun Tanning a 5-Star rating. I feel consumers should have options on certain things, especially, when there a $30 difference on "enhancement items." However, since my overall experience was very good to excellent, I would be happy to recommend Desert Sun Tanning to my friends & family, but make them aware of their lotion purchase options. read more

I think the girls in here tanned away all their brain cells because any time you call about information on your account you get 4 different answers from 4 different employees. They love to sell you stuff without telling you the price, and they are pushy. OH AND THEY LOVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR OWN SKIN. I'm a mixed race gal who needs a lot of time in a bed and I've been talked into going less time then I know I need because they don't "want to get in trouble with their boss" and "these are high powered beds we have people who come in every day and don't go that long". Right, because their skin doesn't have the same compounds as mine. Look that up on the cell phone glued to your hand, rude girl at the front counter. They talk so fast before you're done they've sold you the whole store. Oh and don't try to cancel either, they'll tell you that they're taking money from your account the next day so that you're forced to tan another month, and when that day comes they don't actually take any money.
