    Chicken kathi roll

Food was delicious. We ordered dahi puri, Chicken kathi roll, non veg thali. Everything was rightly spiced and amount was good enough for two people. The owner was also cordial and took good notice of our needs.

We decided to try this place because it's so close to home and we were craving Indian food. Also we saw they had a buy one get 150% off deal for their biryani's. The restaurant is a lot more spacious inside than it seems from the outside. There's a big dining room with cool lights, which I would assume would be an event room or something. Overall, the food is OK. Portion wise was pretty decent compared to other places the chicken 65, which is usually one of my favorite dishes was lacking. The chicken is buried under the rice, which I feel like dries it out a lot. Also didn't feel like there was quite enough chicken in that dish and the chicken 65 didn't have much flavor overall, which was pretty disappointing. The butter chicken was good, but the flavor felt alittle dialed back. The workers are very nice though so I appreciate that.

A 3 for now, but I will be back to try again and hopefully rate higher! **** It was weird that they only provide plastic spoons to eat with. People kept looking around for forks. Ha The rice for the butter chicken was served on a paper plate. That was a first! Maybe they ran out of bowls, forks and knives? The food was ok! Need to come back to try it on another day.

It was my first time at Desi Bites! I really enjoyed the customer service and quality of food. It was my first time trying samosa chaat, and it was delicious and savory with the garbanzo beans. I enjoyed the Gobi Manchurian Biryani. It was my first time trying biryani, and the portion size was huge and full of spices! The service was quick too, and there is plenty of seating.

Tried this place on a weekday afternoon time, the place is good. Ambiance is nice and clean. Staff is decent. We tried their chats including papdi chat and dahi papdi chat, both of them were good. This is more like the hyderabadi style chat and not the north indian style of chat to be really specific. Overall, a good place to try.

    Non Vegetarian Delux Thali

I had a little time before my chiropractic appointment and saw this spot on the way. Craving some Indian food I decided to stop in. It was lunchtime and not busy at all. This may be due to people passing it by. It's tucked inside a strip mall. The restaurant interior is simple. There is a back room that looks like a party room. The menu has a lot of choices. I decided to get the non vegetarian thali option. It was just the right size for me. Food was flavorful and came out quickly. I am from that part of the world and am familiar with the dishes but many here are not. I evidenced four different people who came in and were not greeted. A person came in and waited for a bit and left because there was no one to receive him. Another crew came in and I could tell they were not familiar with the food and needed some direction. Engaging in conversation with them would have been helpful. The place was not busy. I think with some more interaction would make this a great spot to enjoy some Indian food.

    Lamb Dum Biryani $15.99

First time visiting and the area was special as one side was more of a restaurant with seats while the other side was a small supermarket. Kind of cool! We ordered one thing for take out and it was lamb biryani. To be honest, I never had Indian food but someone said this place was good so we decided to try. 1. Lamb Dum Biryani for $15.99. We asked mild as we can't really tolerate spice (I know it's not authentic but we really can't). The rice was nice, as we long the long grain rice. It was mixed with shredded carrots and others spices, too. The rice had some heat, even though it's mild, it was still making me having a runny nose. I also had the lamb which was less spicy. The lamb was very flavorful and tender. There was an egg there too and that one was the least spicy. It was very nice. This whole box was very generous with the portions. I don't know if I would try this place again because of the heat but for those who can handle it, it's good. I just needed some water haha. The spices/seasonings were nice.

    Lunch buffet

Desi Bites is becoming one of my favorite spots for a lunch buffet. For now they only have it on Saturday, but I love that they post their buffet menu on their page so you know what to expect going on. They do a good job including a lot of vegetarian options. Their Shahi paneer was fantastic, and their gobhi Manchurian is by far my favorite. Their naans are usually fresh and their special appetizers especially their samosas are always on point. For a buffet the food as good as ordering separately so it's definitely worth trying a good portion of their menu on one day. And it's very reasonable. They usually post their buffet menu a day or two before the weekend so check it out it's definitely worth it

Chicken curry homestyle, garlic naan, biryani rice and chicken kathi roll. So delicious. Dip that naan in the curry!
    Anthony C.

Freshly made food every day and those spices are kicking and you can taste every spice they put in there with their food and I'm such a curry sucker as I love curry especially chicken curry as in my photo. I love naan too. Just like that I am dipping my garlic bread or bread in general in spaghetti sauce. I have to dip that bread in the curry. The service is very accommodating and the atmosphere is pleasant and I love the design of the restaurant and the owner is very kind and definitely recommend this restaurant. Hopefully, they open up another location in Portland.

    Gobhi Manchurian. Tasty.

I ordered food from Desi Bites today delivered by Grubhub. Everything arrived on time, packaged well and looking freshly prepared. I ordered Gobhi Manchurian, Shahi Paneer and Paneer Dum Biryani. Each item was delicious. The food was very flavorful and authentic. I was very pleased with my order. I have not yet visited the place in person but I know they are attached to an Indian convenience market. The menu is extensive with great options for us vegetarians. The portion sizes were comparable to what is usually given out at Indian restaurants. Desi Bites is located in the strip center across the street from Fred Meyers on Walker and 158. Their street address is Regatta. They are open daily 11-2:30 and 4-9pm. If you are a fan of Indian food, Desi Bites is definitely worth trying!

Garlic Naan, Chicken Curry, Butter Chicken Curry, Chicken Tiki Marsala!

The most wonderful food around! The staff were super friendly. Very clean and many people were dining in and taking out. They do serve a buffet on Saturdays and Sundays from 11-2:30 and we will be going back!

    Naan and butter chicken w/rice.

When my 20 year old was hospitalized last month I had a bevy of friends ( all of them are pretty much social workers and therapists) fussing at me to eat and hydrate. I mean I love them but they were blowing up my phone. One night, one friend even had her husband make me homemade pho and drove it all the way from Lake O. Which was lovely. Of course. My friend R who lives at the coast talked me into going home to eat dinner and shower."You need a break. What sounds good? I will have it delivered to you". Me,exhausted,"Really nothing". "Uh huh" she said. " Okay. Butter chicken, mild and naan." Janet in a bowl. Pasty, creamy, spicy. Charred around the edges. When I got home there was delivery from Desi Bites landing on my doorstep. Fresh flowers, chai, butter chicken, naan, and rice. Crazy nice ,huh? It was just right. Honestly, good naan and fluffy basmati rice and creamy butter chicken. If it was ordered mild I'd say it still leaned toward medium spicy. The portion size was great for one person. It was very comforting, hot, cozy, and nourishing, and did the trick. It looks like they have some other interesting choices there so I will be dragging in the kid soon as we are done with the hospital now. The kid loves butter chicken too. Butter chicken FTW. Thanks R!

Old inedible rice which was the entirety of the Thali meal delivered :(

The location and atmosphere is nothing special, but that isn't why you come here. Both times I've gone it's been busy, but we were able to get seated right away. The paneer makhani curry is delectable. It's rich, sweet, spicy, creamy, and has a great depth of flavor and spices. The shrimp biryani was the standout dish for me that I still keep thinking about. The rice was aromatic and cooked perfectly, while the shrimp was robust, bright, and very spicy. I would recommend ordering a spice level down from what you would normally get.The mini samosas were packed with flavor and I loved all onions in them. The garlic naan was also solid. All around incredible food!

Unfortunately, my second order via DoorDash missed the mark in two significant ways: 1) Spice level not honored: I ordered butter chicken and Mughlai paneer and selected "mild", specifically because my 5-year-old was going to eat with me. What arrived was unbearably hot, even for an adult used to spicy Indian food. I double-checked my receipt and the mild selection was clearly there. Neither dish was edible for my child, and I could barely get through it myself. What's especially frustrating is that my first order at mild spice came out perfectly mild. Dishes like butter chicken and Mughlai korma-style preparations are traditionally on the gentler end of the heat spectrum. It would be great if the restaurant could maintain consistency in honoring spice level selections, as it makes a difference for the person eating it. 2) No rice with the main course: In every Indian restaurant I've visited globally, a main entree comes with a side of rice as standard. I didn't select "extra rice" on DoorDash assuming this was a given, and added only a garlic naan. What arrived was two entrees and a very small portion of naan (two thin slices, really enough for one person), and no rice at all. A heads-up on the menu or at checkout that rice is not included would go a long way. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously, because the food itself is very tasty!

The moment I walked in to Apna Chat Bhavan, the smell transported me back to the days when my…read morehusband and I lived in India. I read somewhere that this little Indian eatery is the most Indian of Indian restaurants in Portland. That made me eager to try it. The space is half restaurant, where you walk up to the counter to order, and half Indian grocery. In between they have a large case with chat (snacks) and sweets (every kind of Indian sweet you can imagine) as well as fancy looking slices of cakes and pastries. This isn't your average Indian restaurant with sitar music, fancy decor and high prices. This is where to go with a family, or a casual meal with great prices and generous portions. Food is served on paper plates on plastic trays and you bus your own table. The first thing we had while waiting for our food was mango lassi. Wow! I've consumed (and made at home) many of those but these were some of the best! Perfect amount of mango and the consistency was great! Loved it! My husband was starving so he chose a bun filled with chicken from the case. It was tasty. I don't know what it's called. I wanted a masala dosa though. They have quite a few kinds on the menu. Working and traveling in India I never came across so many kinds. I opted for a Mysore Masala Dosa. The helpful woman behind the counter explained they have more flavorful spices added to this kind of dosa. My husband ordered the goat korma, which was on a little daily special sign on the counter. My dosa came out fairly quickly. I don't think I've ever had a larger one! See my photo! There was ample potato filling inside as well. Soft and delicious with onion, peas & carrots, like it's supposed to. The Mysore spice was ok but just heavily sprinkled on inside the dosa which made it a little dry. Sambar always comes with dosas-a beautiful tasting soup. I wished they were more generous with that. They only gave me a tiny cupful. Green & red chutneys came with it too. They were fine but not that amazing. My husband's goat curry took a long time to arrive! I was halfway or more through my giant dosa before it was finally ready. I didn't try it and also forgot to take a photo. Sorry. He said it was flavorful and the meat was tender. As in most traditional Indian goat curries, there were small bits of bone and also some significant pieces of fat. But the portion was generous and lots of rice came alongside it too. He took some of both home. We were too full for sweets, but I did a little shopping in the store after. Here's a little tip for you: Don't buy spices (of most kinds) at the supermarket. Buy them at an Indian store-they are always a great deal. I bought whole peppercorns for my pepper mill for a great price (Sorry Penzy's) and some others. But I felt like I struck it rich finding mango Shrikand in the freezer case! Woohoo! We used to eat that at a restaurant when we lived in Pune, India. We took it home with us. I had to knock off a star because our food wasn't ready at the same time. Bummer. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could. I can see where some would mark them down because it isn't fancy, but this little place made me happy and I want to go back for more.
