I can't say enough nice things about Fanny. I came to Fanny for my wedding dress alterations. Fanny saw me 6 or 7 times during a 3-month course before my wedding because my weight fluctuated a lot. My dress is very simple, so a little change in my body shape will show. I lost quite some weight 2 months before the wedding, gained it back, and lost it again. My dress was finalized 6 days before my wedding day and it turned out gorgeously. During this time, Fanny also did my measurements for my custom made Qipao, and gave recommendations for my then fiancé's shirt and suit choices, for free. Bottom line first, go with Fanny! Fanny is so talented and patient. So much goes into altering your wedding dress, and I had no idea before meeting Fanny. I wanted to do a lot to my dress, in addition to the tweaks I wanted, my dress fit me too big. I met with her every other week 2 months before my wedding, then weekly the month of my wedding. My body fluctuated a lot during this time, but she was still spot on with alterations. I wanted a slit added to my dress, and she executed that with precision, exactly what I wanted. Fanny is heaven sent!!!!!! Not only is she a seamstress, but she was also a wedding dress designer. When i first tried on my wedding dress, it wasn't flattering and it didn't feel like the one. Since I did not have the typical tall body type, it just didn't look right. By the time Fanny finished, it was like saying YES to the dress and I actually felt that it was the one even though I had already bought it. =) I had gone to two other seamstresses before Fanny and they told me that the look I wanted was not achievable since it was lace. When my wedding dress arrived it fit perfectly except that it was really tight around the ribcage area. I debated whether to get alterations done and finally decided to do it (along with getting a bustle as well). I found Fanny on Yelp, and worked with her over a series of short appointments. Since my bodice didn't have much wiggle room to expand, she ended up creating a lace-up backing (was originally a zipper), and I like the laced look even better than the original. I came to Fanny for wedding dress alterations. Since I bought my wedding dress new from the designer, I thought I would need minimal alterations. When my wedding dress arrived, I realized that the wedding dress shop measured me incorrectly, and the size was too small. When I went into Fanny's shop on a hot summer day, I felt like I was ready to pass out and would get dizzy each time I took a deep breath. In addition to the known alterations (hem length, add bustle, insert cups), I had to find a way to either decrease the size of my ribcage (hah!) or find a way to add material through my chest. At first, Fanny recommended that we add material to the back - but this would require a pretty significant change in the look of the dress, which I had specifically chosen because of the delicate asymmetrical lace detail with buttons down the center. I wasn't thrilled, but it was better than fainting on my wedding day. After thinking about it and looking at my dress, Fanny thought of an alternate option where we could open up the seams on the side of the dress, expand the few inches of material there, and cover the area with lace. I sourced lace to use, but Fanny had leftover material from the train of a different dress which matched perfectly. The end result was totally unnoticeable and looked great! In the end, the cost of alterations was not cheap, but was pretty competitive with other quotes I received for similar work. What sold me on Fanny was that she clearly has an eye for design and executes well. She offered options and solutions, versus other shops where it seemed like they were bunching the material and testing out the bustle in ways that seemed unnatural. She was patient with me when I struggled with my bustle decision, and she provided valuable alterations insight based on my height and body shape. SO unprofessional. Does fanny even work? Both times I have visited, her shop has been closed even though it was during her stated work hours. She didnt even have the courtesy to call and inform me that she would be canceling my VERY urgent alteration needs, which I specifically communicated to her... I even left early from work for her, drove out of the way to stop by her store, and waited 3 days for the appointment since she wasn't open during the weekend or on Monday. When I arrived, there was an ambiguous note left on her window that said "She was closed due to outside appointments." WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? I asked the laundromat next door and he advised I stick around for a few minutes. For 30 minutes I waited, having shown up a bit early for the appointment... and to make matters worse, she listed a number that rang to no avail. Completely unreliable and VERY disappointed. 2 hours after the missed appointment, I receive a call and a voicemail saying she had tried to reach me around 3pm. Checked my phone call list again to make sure, and nope, no voicemail or missed call. I then frantically scoured Yelp on my cell phone to see if I could hurry over to another alteration shop before closing. I had to haul ass back to downtown San Mateo to an alteration store that charged more than I had anticipated. Extremely unhappy with this experience. I'm very disappointed that the few Yelp reviews for Fanny seemed to overhype her level of professionalism. read more

I brought my wedding dress to Fanny for some basic alterations (shortening the dress and adding a bustle). Since I work in SF during the week she graciously opened her shop on a couple of Saturdays so I could come in to get fitted. Her turnaround time was very quick and her work is good quality. It cost me $136 for both services, which I thought was totally reasonable. Bonus points: When Fanny learned that I have basic sewing skills she suggested that I do some of the remaining work myself and save myself some money. Then she gave me detailed instructions on how to shorten the straps and iron the dress without damaging the satin. I went to Fanny to get my wedding dress altered. She did a wonderful job, with some very complicated lace work that required some major surgery. I would say she's very trustworthy - she won't destroy your precious gown. She also steamed my dress and several of my bridesmaids' dresses. I felt that the alterations were priced well, but the steaming seemed overpriced, considering my dress re-wrinkled when it was placed in the car. If I had to do it all again, I wouldn't get my dressed steamed. It was bound to wrinkle again. She worked very hard to place the dresses in the car very carefully and gave us very specific instructions for taking care of them, though. She was also very kind and helpful, especially with helping me in and out of my massive gown when I came in for fittings. Tip: she isn't very responsive by email, so it's best to call. read more

My dress did not fit properly sadly. I gave her my dress with a month to do alterations which mostly were all finished in the last week anyway. After wearing the dress I know, she should have suggested to get the dress a size down because the way it was altered my dress did not fit. A wedding dress should sit well and like a glove. As well be able to be photographed from any angle I shouldn't have to worry about bunching Fabric. Half of my wedding pictures are awful because you can see the fabric brunched and my dress was made too short. She might of had an easier time altering my dress if she just said from the beginning the dress was the wrong size, which could have been fixed in a day, but she said she could take it in and now I'm stuck with not so flattering wedding dress and pictures. Brought my wedding dress here because my cake maker, Cakes by Maggie, recommended Fanny. I had to have the dress bustled and the whole hem needed some repairs because the dress had been a floor model. I also considered having the dress's neckline made into a sweetheart but Fanny was up front and honest about the high cost of having something like that done and gave her opinion that the dress looked great as is. All work was completed quickly and was well done. Fanny offered her opinion when asked which was really helpful. The price was also very fair. The most important reason I would recommend Fanny is that she went above and beyond in two instances. I had the dress pressed and cleaned before having it tailored (I guess I was supposed to wait and have it done after so that it didn't get wrinkled) and she allowed me to leave the dress with her, hanging high so it didn't get wrinkled. Then because I was picking it up the day before the wedding, she also allowed my cake maker to drop off the groom's cake at her shop so I could pick up both at the same time! I've used Fanny for altering a bridesmaid dress years ago and she did such a good job that I trusted her to do the most important garment of my life...my wedding dress. This dress was an expensive Vera Wang designer dress and very complex to alter. She had me come in numerous times to make small adjustments as your body changes slightly from week to week. I'm fairly short and she cut the length to be short enough not to trip but not so short that I looked like a hobbit. Come the big day, the dress fit me like a glove and I couldn't have been happier.
