Led by our design architect, Jay Touchstone, and project manager, Patrick Aiken, every detail was planned and executed thoughtfully, with incredible professionalism and skill. We purchased a home that needed some TLC outside and they helped us imagine, plan, budget and execute on a phased overhaul of the entire property. Every day that Mario and his team were onsite reconfirmed our provider choice. This team was clean, efficient, hard working, and just really good at what they do. There was a time my husband and I considered doing some of this work ourselves. Watching this crew for just a couple of days confirmed we never could have done this work with a fraction of the skill or quality this team delivered. They are truly pros. There were also many unexpected surprises along the way where smart, thoughtful details in Jay's design came to life - and we wouldn't have even thought to ask for these details. We also changed our minds, cut the budget, and pivoted a few times and they didn't bat an eye. The team listened and counseled us through our needs and priorities so that we would achieve our goals. They are not the least expensive option but we price checked several items and they are very fair. Beyond that, their skill and counsel was so impactful that I would argue you'd be better off paying for their counsel and forgoing or delaying a couple items in your project if budget is top priority. We can be exacting and specific and have absolutely no regrets. Jay even skillfully helped my husband and I navigate conflicting preferences. I can't express enough to all the review readers... DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! You won't go with these guys if you do!!! I hired Designs by Sundown off of a friend's recommendation. I was moving across the country & starting a new job. I needed someone to take care of this $500k project! Lucky I learned quickly & I am only out what I paid for an embarrassing fence, I don't even want to know how much I over paid for this! I have random nails everywhere that aren't even hammered in straight, 2x4s shoved in gaps & I've already pulled a huge splinter out of my dogs jowl that went through & through. Pictures below are what the fence installer & project manager felt were good fixes! Just to start... I got a bid for turf from them for nearly $140k.... I was told the only other option is like what they sell at HomeDepot! After contacting 7 turf installers (all 4.5star rating & above, none of them HomeDepot), DBS was $40k more than the highest bid I got! The fence they installed, the only option I was given by the designer, is a split wood fence. All the fencing on my property & my entire development is the rounded wood fencing. This was never given even as an option. He did show me a small picture & not being from around here I assumed, split wood meant the three poles between posts...not a sliver nightmare. He also knew this area was being turfed for a dog & kid area. Bad on me for being aloof & assuming the designer was doing right by me!!! Even the fence installer said this is not what they'd put up for this type of area! Lucky for me, I'm only down the money of the fence. I got out. Working on pool/ spa bids. They are all coming in $75-80k less than I was quoted for DBS, all from 5 star pool companies. Do your research! Make a few phone calls! I'm giving 1star because there isn't zero. I felt I needed to warn people as this company has really ruined what was going to be a great project for my forever home!!!! read more

I would highly recommend Designs by Sundown if you are looking for a full-service landscape company. They have found a niche within the landscape industry where they maintain the property with the highest quality. My husband and I travel quite a bit and we don't have to worry about our yard. We were traveling during some terrible storms and got an email from our Customer Service Rep Casey that we had some tree limbs down. He took care of them right away and we came home to a property that showed beautifully. We didn't have to call services to take care of the downed branches and meet them for an estimate and to schedule work. It was all done! They do a very nice job with installing new plants - they are always on time and efficient. We are very happy with the work. read more

They installed a $11,000 paver patio for us six years ago. Part of it slowly settled causing a basement water problem. I had to find another paving contractor to raise the sunken pavers, cost $2,400. Very disappointing, I cannot recommend Designs by Sundown. read more

New landscaping done in 2015. Already for the price we paid it wasn't the greatest! Now less than a year later we called to have plants and trees replaced since it's all half dead !! And it's under a year warranty. We called 4 weeks ago and they still haven't come ! Not happy. They are super expensive. No service and no quality. Steer clear! And now 2 years later the low volt landscape lights were practically all out. Called applewood and they said it was all wired wrongly and redid it. Paid so much to have all redone on two years. read more

We hired this company at the suggestion of the former owner of a house we bought in Denver to activate and check out our irrigation system. They billed us $135.00 for "Irrigation activation plus drive time". Their invoice said they did the work on 5-1-19. We do not live in Denver and hired another company to check the amount of water being used for the system. They did their service on 5-25-19. They found 7 bad nozzles with filters and 3 bad micro-jet nozzles. They had to adjust and clean other heads, program the clock and install a freeze bag because Designs by Sundown left wet insulation around the copper piping. Apparently, Designs by Sundown turned on the system and did nothing else. They claimed that they checked out the system, but obviously they did not do so. I asked for refund and they refused. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

This company was a complete ripoff. They required a down payment for half the job up front and then didn't show up for 4 months. The work and quality of materials were subpar. When we complained to them about some of the new plants they chose, they put in others and charged us again. When we complained about the perceived price gouging, they threatened to file a lien on the property. If one could assign a negative star to this group, I would assign five. It's unfortunate that I have to select a single star in order to post this review. read more

Very difficult to work with and wildly overpriced. We hired Designs by Sundown to do a landscape architecture plan. They continually ignored our input and desires and flat out dismissed my wife's requested as if her desires as the customer were unimportant. Further they are WAY over priced. After the plans were completed their bid to complete the specified work was $650k, we received a competitors bid and it was $230k. STAY AWAY! read more

Our yard was obviously a smaller project for this firm, and it showed in the low quality of design and delays in response. We decided to pay them for the uninspired design work and asked for a refund of our balance, which we got. Through it all, no one asked us why we were terminating this relationship or what they might have done to save it. Didn't seem to care. They have a lot of competition out there, and I would advise looking elsewhere for residential landscaping services. read more

To provide a little background, we've been building a new construction home in Wash Park for the last 2 1/2 years which unfortunately turned out to be more of a lengthy and horrific nightmare than an enjoyable experience. However there is always a silver lining in the clouds somewhere, and thankfully, Jeromy Montano provided that for us. I originally contacted Designs by Sundown to do my home's landscaping in Hilltop in the spring of 2008. I was a bit worried that as a big company, i would get little attention to do my project that was "only" $15K...my fears came true. After many delays and poor communication, they finally planted in fall of 2008 with several mistakes. After many phone calls/voice mails, I finally got in touch with someone that said that someone would contact me to fix the issues in the spring. Spring came and had no contact from them. Once again, after many phone calls / voice mails throughout the early summer, I still got no response. I resorted to a nasty email explaining my situation and dis-satiscation. Again, no response. So, I called back a week later and asked to speak to a manager since i was getting no where with their customer service. The manager (Jeremy) finally got on the phone and to my surprise, he was aggressive, defensive and outright combatitive, like he is the victim. Remember, this is well over a year since we began this process. I was in awe. After a few more no-shows, they fixed some of my issues, but somehow they can not find a weeping willow tree to replace the mistaken tree on my front lawn. I am no landscaper, but google found me a weeping willow that i can have delivered overnight. Oh, and i noticed 3 days after they came that my sprinklers were shooting straight up out of my backyard. Again, they never called me back after i left 2 VMs telling them of my new problem. I called a different landscaper to fix the problem. Apparently, they laid the sprinkler just below the grass, instead of the required 6"....unbelievable. I would NEVER use or recommend this company for anything. I have no idea why they "supposedly" have a good reputation as a high end landscaper. To me landscaping is not rocket science and 90% of the benefit is customer service and this is not their strong point. As far as the work they did...good design, but a bit over-crowded causing me to spend more money than i needed to. I remain in awe...i will update this post if anything changes. read more

We had our entire yard landscaped by Designs by Sundown this late May. Corey Breithauer provided the estimate previously, and was the lead on the installation. He and his install team were super polite, timely and knowledgeable, and we have been very satisfied with the completed job. Corey has stopped by twice since then, once to check on things because of the heat, and once to replace two plants that were not doing well. Two days ago, Steve, a horticulturalist for the company, also stopped by to check on how the plants were doing. He, too, was extremely knowledgeable, taking lots of time to talk with me about what each of the types of plants needed, and assured me that, if anything needs to be replaced, or if we have any questions at all, to call and ask for him or Corey. I am surprised by the very negative reviews. We couldn't be more pleased with the work that has been done, the attention to our project since, and the knowledgeable, capable staff. read more

Used to be great but now I can never even get them to return my calls. Tried twice to get summer landscaping cleanup work done, and had to give up when I would leave messages that were just never returned. Same thing seems to be happening with Fall cleanup. I can not give enough praise for Designs by Sundown. I am a recent widow struggling to take care of four acres and two sprinkling systems - Netafim and the standard above-ground system. Within two days of my initial contact the owner, Mike Hommel, had called me back to discuss the issues,and Brad came out and shut down both systems for the winter. Brad was extremely courteous and patient with my plight. I will definitely use them in the future. My husband was a partner at the largest retail nursery in Colorado, so I knew Designs by Sundown had a great reputation, and they were recommended to me by a very successful nursery wholesaler in Englewood. I spent $70,000 and had the same experience as Alan B. Working with designer Chris. The experience was how we could make it easier on the Designs by Sundown team, not focused on what I wanted. The end results were changes I did not authorize or desire. The experience bubbled to the point when the owner had called me and wanted to come by and review a look over the property with me. It's been about 8 months since he called, still no visit or even follow-up which has been typical fo the experience,(sorry April; Michael isn't so professional with everyone). I've had to follow-up on multiple other items, warranty issues. Their subcontractors can be better or worse than the Designs team. There are plenty of options in the Denver Metro area. I will be working with other companies to finish out the landscaping on the remainder of my properties. read more

This part of project at about $65,000. Had to keep reorienting designer to the project and specs. They changed design plans in the middle of project without my authorization. Stayed home from work on two separate days to allow them access to house, didn't show, no call. Consistently poor communication. Had to ask several times for subcontractors to not litter lunch items about the lawn, and leave excess materials on side of house. I called back with some warranty issues, only 2 of 5 items addressed. Discussed with owner, said would get right on these items after his out of country trip and come visit property. That was probably 10 months ago. Poor follow-through & communication apparently at every level. The remainder of our project will go to another contractor. They may be okay for commercial property as outlined in another review, wouldn't use them for residential. Their designers are listed with several accolades, but frankly nothing unique in talent, rather have someone willing to work hard and understand the plan. read more

Contacted them in April on my father's recommendation (they had done his yard about 8 years prior). Waited 2 weeks for one of their landscape designers - Cynthia - to come to my home. Her first comment was "Traffic was awful. They should have told you that we don't work out here" (my dad lives less than 2 miles from my home and I did provide all my information at the time that I scheduled the appointment). She then looked at my yard and told me that it would be about 2 weeks for her to get back to me with an estimate and that it may be only 1 week, but she wanted to overestimate. 3 weeks later I hadn't heard anything so I contacted her and was told that she was working on "seasonal color" for Memorial Day and that she was now telling clients 4 weeks (I reminded her that she had told me 2 weeks) and was told I should hear from her after Memorial Day. 7 weeks later I still hadn't heard anything. I hired another landscaping firm to do my yard. Keep in mind I was just waiting for an ESTIMATE. This didn't even include the amount of time that I would have had to wait to have the yard installed. Extremely poor business model. Don't know if this just speaks to Cynthia's poor customer service or to the business as I whole (although in reading through other reviews this does seem to be a trend). I feel compelled to write a letter of thanks and admiration. Your company, and all those involved, Mitch Tancik, Luis Soto and crew, people's names I have forgotten, deserve a hearty thanks. Mitch's designs were sophisticated and beautiful and easily loved and accepted by this persnickety client. Not only did he completely surprise me with a extraordinary design layout thoughtful to the climate and elevation, but it was above and beyond anything I studied in any current design magazine. Luis and crew were just a dream come true. The sweetest, most diligent, respectful people I have dealt with in a long time. They were there before work, waiting to make progress. The job was completed before the estimated date. I have NEVER had that experience before with any contractors before Sundown. I kept waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop, but it never did. I could not recommend this company enough to anyone. Well worth any money to have a landscape design dream made into reality and then to have it backed up with a warranty was just unbelievable. I continue to be happy about one year later. I wish I could be here a lifetime to watch it grow and prosper. I've tilled, planted and sweated over my own gardens in Washington and California, Colorado and its climate was too chancy for me. Sundown made it happen. As a side note, I continued to be surprised about the wonderful work all involved performed. The crew was there every single day necessary. I also love getting to see Luis from time to time to do the over-winter watering. It was necessary and I don't know that I would have put in the time because normally, winter used to be enough water. Not only did she design a beautiful plan, she took my ideas I to consideration and came up with a design we love. We were working under a deadline for my daughter's wedding and everything was completed on time. She and the team worked diligently to ensure every detail was covered. She even stopped by the house to deadhead before the wedding. The lighting professional was amazing and really takes pride in his lighting design. I had a less than sub-part experience with this company. Corey Brethauer was nice at first but the more questions I asked the less responsive he became. The numbers on the bids kept changing (3 bids which all built on each other). The first bid would list one price and by the second bid the price had gone up, and again on the 3rd. Corey claimed it had to do with their auto bid system which is ridiculous. Who has a bidding system that can't be manually adjusted? After reviewing one of his bids I totaled up what I wanted done and emailed the total to him for confirmation. He never acknowledged my email. When I was finally able to get in touch with him again he gave me attitude about the number I sent him. He made no effort to talk through it with me. He left several days between when I contacted him and when he'd get a bid to me. On one occasion I talked to him on a Wednesday and didn't get a response on the bid until Monday. When I was ready to move forward with the project he just never returned my call. His behavior was very unprofessional and his customer service skills are seriously lacking. It was clear I was being jerked around with prices. I decided to go with a different company for my project. Designs by Sundown lost a good client because of him. read more

We chose Designs by Sundown based on seeing completed (and beautiful ) work in our neighborhood backed up by many word of mouth recommendations. We felt very confident going into the project and were not disappointed. We have had an excellent experience with Designs by Sundown beginning with the design process, and continuing through installation and follow up. Our project was a complicated one due to its difficult space as well as the constraints of both our homeowners' association and applying for variances with the city. Sundown made what seemed like a daunting task actually quite easy and seamless. The project was completed on time and on budget. I never once had any issues getting a hold of anyone and was actually contacted several times following completion of the project to ensure that we were completely satisfied. We have used our outdoor space more in the the last three months than we have in the last eight years we have lived here.
