My friend ordered the egg puffs and was so excited to see that you can add nutella for 55cents extra. It was a dream come true for him. LOL! The egg puff was decent. It could have been a little more crispier. Dipping the egg puff in nutella was yummy. My other friend ordered the black sesame paste + sweet tofu. I did not try it but I think he enjoyed it! My friend and I shared the super mango (mango freeze, aloe jelly, mango topped with mango ice cream). This was overall good, except the "mango" ice cream tasted artificial The mango freeze and aloe jelly underneath the ice cream was delicious. And I also love the fresh mango bits are top! Yum. This place is also famous for the Hong Kong style egg pastry which always smells so good, but unfortunately I've never tried. I'm a die hard fan of their egg pudding and it is my standard order. Although I've parked in the adjacent parking garage in downtown San Mateo + passed by this place a gazillion times over the years, this is the 1st time I actually stopped in for a taste. We were craving something sweet but not too heavy or filling like pastries can tend to be. We considered getting frozen yogurt... but then decided to look up some place new on Yelp! + thus decided on Dessert Republic. As this was a Sunday night, not too many dessert places in northern 650 area tend to be open later in the evenings, but lucky for us, Dessert Republic was. I ordered a frozen and fruity dish called "Pink Lady" while my friend got Mango Black Pearl Barley. For about $5 each, it was definitely worth it. The food came quick enough + was exactly what I was looking for... something healthy + refreshing that wasn't from your typical neighborhood froyo shop. One interesting thing about this place is that they have the little service buttons on each of their tables that reminds me of Korean places down in LA. They do come to you to bring you your food, but other than that, the set of buttons are labelled for every other service: Order, Bill, etc... + they don't come to your table otherwise. Odd since the place is so small + isn't Korean, but it's convenient I suppose since there were only 2 women behind the counter. As you can see from other peoples' photos, the decor on the inside is distinctive for the paintngs on the walls that give the impression of eating outdoors in the streets on Hong Kong. The ceiling is a pale blue while the walls portray traditional building fronts with signs + doorways. This is an unusual place. In the back alleys near the parking garage in downtown, it's old and somewhat rundown. They have these crazy buttons that you use for service requests. I passed by here the last time I was in San Mateo, and there were a lot of people so we just decided to go somewhere else for dessert. And today I finally got a chance to try it since I was there again!! It was in he middle of the afternoon, but hey, it still tastes good. I ordered the super mango and it was delicious!!!! :9 This just made its way to become my 2nd favorite dessert of all time :) My boyfriend ordered their honeydew milk and it also tasted really good too! We would've ordered some egg puffs too but we were already stuffed from lunch, but we'll get it next time!!! My family knows me so well and they know that I love eating Hong Kong style desserts since they're not readily available in LA. It was such a beautiful evening with perfect weather that we decided to sit outdoors. The staff was very helpful in bringing out the tables and chairs to the little alleyway. The only downside to sitting outside is that if you need service, you have to walk inside the actual restaurant yourself because they won't come out to check on you. I ended up getting something off the menu called "Pink Lady" to share with my kid. It was so refreshing! It had fresh strawberries and fresh watermelon inside a watermelon slush, topped with a scoop of ice cream. My mom got her black sesame tofu pudding dessert. It was a little on the bland side so I had to go in to get some sugar or table syrup to help flavor it better. My brother got a red bean icee & my SIL a dessert crepe. I came here with my friend after dinner seeking that infamous ramen cheesecake, which is pretty damn unique. Cheesecake with ramen shaped ingredients, how ingenious! Sadly, no cheesecake. I asked them when they would have it again, and the response was "next week". Somehow, some supply chain issue in meeting demand of their popular ramen cheesecake. So we settled with tiramisu. What surprised me was that we ordered it, but my friend wanted to see if she could take one home, but we were told that there were no take-out on the tiramisu. Then we sat there for about 15 minutes, and then we were wondering how long it was going to take, and then the server told us, "oh, I thought you two didn't want anything". What? We would sit there with zero menus to occupy space? I found it very odd. FOOD: The tiramisu is a cute concept as many types of Chinese/Taiwanese desserts have adapted. Looking like a pot with a small plant and rocks, each part was creatively adapted. Similar to worms and earth (gummy worms and crushed up Oreos), Dessert Republic made tiramisu. The tiramisu was okay, I wish it had more ladyfingers and more of a flavor profile. I found it to be just sweet, but no coffee or any distinguishable flavors saying, "oh yeah, this is really good tiramisu". Sadly, Dessert Republic with its service and pretty bland tiramisu that costed more than I am willing to pay for a dessert disappointed me and my friend. Great variety of food and desserts. I've been here twice. First time, we ordered a crepe to go. The crepe started dripping melted ice cream as I started leaving the store. We had to return and ask for a cup. By the time I got to the car, my cup had a pretty decent amount of melted ice cream. They need to A) wrap it better or B) freeze/contain their ice cream better, so it's more frozen. The crepe itself was not consistent throughout. Parts of it were too soft, then somewhat crispy, then super soggy. They also skimped on the lychee, cutting it into tiny shreds. The quality of the ice cream was also not that great. Second time, we ordered another crepe. Since we dined in, it wasn't as bad. However, crepe was pretty cold in some areas for having been just made. The complimentary tea tasted horrible. It tasted like dish wash. The HK milk tea was good. Cool part is you can press the button on the tables for service. This place def doesn't compare to a lot of the HK dessert places in SF. We came in a big group of 10 on a Friday night, and this place was packed. Luckily we didn't have to wait long for people to leave for us to put a few small tables together. There were a ton of choices, but since I was feeling cold, I decided to go with a hot dessert. I tried the sesame rice dumplings with almond milk tea for $4. It was really yummy, I think I had 4-5 dumplings, and the milk tea was not too sweet. Perfect! There was an old lady working there. She was carrying a tray of 10 waters to our table, but looked to be struggling a bit. I felt bad for her! What was interesting though, was that their system was somewhat automated. Typical Hong Kong dessert joint conveniently located in downtown San Mateo. Their dessert menu is extensive with lots of fresh fruit concoctions. We tried their Tiramisu Pot($10) which literally looks like a plant in an actual pot, Looks much cooler than it tastes. Next up we tried the Aloe Mango fresh fruit bowl which was on the smallish side but solid. Then we moved on to the ginger rice bowls which was surprisingly a nice balance to the previous sweet desserts. My favorite of the night was the strawberry kiwi ice cream crepe which tastes exactly like it reads. I'm a sucker for fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream. There is a box at every table that allows you to push a button to call your waiter, ask for the check, and of course to order. Service was prompt and efficient. I've been looking for a cafe just like this to have Hong Kong style desserts. I'm totally delighted with their offerings, so much so it was hard to pick just one item. But I went with the mango and aloe vera and my bf had the nutella crepe. Both were excellent. I'm looking forward to trying their egg puffs, puddings, and warm desserts. Minus one star, because I think the place should have been much cleaner. We got there a bit after 3pm, which meant they had just opened. Conveniently located next to the parking structured we were parked at, this was the last stop of me and my sister's restaurant hopping adventure. A small little dessert shop, but it was nice cozy for a randomly cold and windy day. We ordered the shark fin soup (sister was craving), black and white sesame (more so because it looked cool) and a ginger lemon coke (I was sick). Shark fin soup: It was okay here... started to lose flavor after a while. Had to ask for some pepper to spice it up a bit. Black and White Sesame: it looks super cool. They arrange it in a shape of yin and yang. I usually like sesame, but I don't think I'm a sesame dessert type of person. I think it would be really good if I was. And it was good hot. Ginger Lemon Coke: I was in awe and disappointed at the same time. Disappointed because it tasted literally like some instant ginger tea crystal packets I have at home mixed with coke and lemon juice, but in awe that they were a genius for thinking of this and charging me over $3 for something I could have made with less than $1. tldr; DO NOT get the egg puffs here! Go down the street to Eggettes if you're feeling a craving as they are much MUCH better. I might be back for another dessert but not this one. Egg puffs (aka eggettes) (1.5/5): They are Hong Kong waffles that are slightly bigger than a traditional Belgium waffle. Their shape is completely different as they are small round puffs connected in a honey comb like pattern. What I got: The outer texture was too hard, crunchy and porous and became crispy and cookie like as it cooled. The inside was too cakey and not airy enough. The taste wasn't sweet enough, tasted heavily of flour and wasn't eggy at all. The color was not as golden yellow/brown as what it normally should be but a white yellow. I found it hard to break off the individual puffs as it started cooling. The real thing: The outer texture is slightly crunchy and smooth while the interior is pillowy, airy and spongey. It should have a sweet eggy smell wafting from the paper bag it's served in. While it is best warm, it can still be delicious cooled. If you've never had an egg puff before then re-calibrate by going elsewhere and you'll find out that you're missing out. read more

Plus, I didn't really taste the black sesame-- both of them tasted the same in all honesty. The BF tried the steamed egg custard, which was okay. The flavor was alright and the texture wasn't bad either. I love this place! I went here for the first time with my friend after eating at Joy Sushi. My friend wanted a crepe so I was like okay let's go. When we got there I was like OMG this was the place I yelped! I was so excited to go in and see the place. If I didn't go with her I don't think I'd ever find this place on my own. You kind of have to go in this alley or little road to get to it. It's kinda hidden. I've been going back a lot with the BF. I'm always craving for their crepes! It's so delicious. I tried the fondue here once and it wasn't so bad...it just didn't taste write dipping the fruits in chocolate. Bananas and strawberries are okay, but honeydew and lychee tastes weird and watery. I haven't tried their food yet but the desserts are yummy! Pretty decent service...its really hard to get their attention when it's busy there but they have these little buttons on the table which calls for service. Last couple times I went their the buttons weren't working. If you go at night it can be a little busy but during the day it's not. I love the design of the place. This place is fabulous! It's a little hole in the wall, located across the street (in the alley by the parking lot) from the Century theatres. I've been there a few times and have been satisfied every time. It reminds me of all the street food and "night market" foods you get in Taiwan, not to mention desserts my mom used to make. It's a great place to hang out with your friends after a movie. They don't rush you out so it's casual and relaxed environment makes it fun. The desserts are yummy and eventually I'd like to try some of their snack/dinner foods. The buttons on the table signaling when you want water, the bill, service, etc. Novel idea! A place that has a special place in my heart because I've been here since a child. The food has definately improved in the years, and although services has dimmed down, I prefer to have less people asking me how my meal is constantly anyways. As a child, I was definately more into the more traditional kid friendly Hong Kong style foods like cur dry fish balls, and crepes or egg puffs. But as I grow older, I love to eat a nice meal here since it's affordable (not saying I don't indulge on sweets anymore, because I still do! But now on steamed sesame paste) Now, I'm very in love with their oyster garlic noodles(very heavy on the garlic) so if you hate garlic, don't even try. But if you absolutely love garlic, go for it! Also their japanese style curry pork chops over rice is delicious, the Katsu is exactly how I'd like my ideal fried pork chop. But I still go for the garlic noodles more often. Their new tiramisu pots, and cheesecake Ramen bowl are very creative and cute. I actually really enjoy the Ramen bowl, but unless you're crazy about jello and cheesecake, don't try to finish the whole thing by yourself.
