It's like eating ice cream at Disneyland. They did a really good job of bringing the "FUN" into the environment and the history of this place. The moosehead is a nice touch, especially that is one of my biggest memories of the original Dewar's. Simply stated....local business done good. This place is the perfect mixture of hometown goodness and kitschy glam. Tonight we brought our two kids and our nephews. My one year old baby girl lit up and shook her booty when she saw (and heard) the singing moose mounted in the wall. Our nephew enjoyed the fountains and statues. The ice cream was amazing! This local company is the same ice cream served at the Disney diner in Hollywood (right next to the El Capitan). It is famous, and easy to see why. It's amazing. My wife loves the strawberry special milkshake. It's amazing. Not too sweet and a perfect blend of savery. The kids each had a small (yet huge serving) of ice cream. I really don't have a single complaint. The service was great. The atmosphere is perfect and the food is divine! Dewars is a Bakersfield staple. If you grew up here your childhood was filled with memories of going to Dewars! At least my childhood is filled with those memories...thanks Grandma for buying us those chews every Christmas! So where do we start, this is the best ice cream, malt, shake & candy spot around. The atmosphere feels like a mix of classic 50's dinner & modern amenities. The staff are friendly and seem to really enjoy their job. We were seated by "Amanda" and she was friendly and very knowledgable of the menu. I had the vanilla malt, it comes in a large glass & the metal cup they mixed it in. So it's basically like getting a free refill. I really enjoy the malt and it comes in any flavor you want. The ice milk is very intriguing, try the mint it's amazing. First let me say that I have been eating Dewars since I was a kid. Every Birthday or special occasion Dewars was a staple. Black and Whites with walnuts are my favorite and have always been, and they have always been spot on. Well last night I decided to order curbside on my way home. The phone was answered by a very unfriendly person (who I believe to be the store manager) who took my order and rudely said my wait would be at least 10 minutes. I wasn't in a hurry so it wasn't a big deal but why the rude attitude? Then only a few minutes later a very kind man named Kyle brought out my order and was very friendly so I of course tipped him. (Thank you Kyle for being the only bright part of that visit). Well when my husband and I go to enjoy our ice cream my first bite of marshmallow and walnut I bite down and heard a loud crack! Yes that was a walnut shell and yes my tooth almost broke! Next thing I know my husband pulls an even bigger walnut shell out of his mouth. You have to be kidding me right? Well ok everyone makes mistakes so I asked my husband to call and let the manager know. When he called, Valerie the manager answered and my husband explained to her what happened. She didn't apologize or even ask him his name! She said she would let her general manager know. So today my husband took the walnut shells in to show the manager and was faced with Valerie once again not apologizing. My husband asked her if they grind their own walnuts and she said she couldn't answer that and gave him the general managers card telling him the GM doesn't work on the weekends. Ok so now I'm miffed because a simple "I'm so sorry that happened to you, we will talk to the prep staff about being extra careful so people don't get hurt," would have been so nice to hear. She wouldn't even acknowledge or address our issue. Why is there a manager if she doesn't handle those type of issues? And why is she the manager if she is unfriendly? I sure do love black and whites but I'm sorry I won't be back. This sure doesn't seem like the Dewars that I grew up loving. Disappointed. ***EDIT*** Today the general manager called my husband and apologized for our experience. I really appreciated the way she handled the situation with us. I am hoping that maybe the store manager was just having a few bad days and realizes that without customers you don't have a business. I really am hoping that Kyle gets some kind of recognition for his courteous service and outgoing personality. He is the type of guy that deserves to be a manager. Anyways I bumped my rating up because I feel the GM and Kyle made up for what happened and Dewars Ice Cream is a Bakersfield tradition. read more

Beside the fact, most of these people working here are still in high school (Including Managers) it isn't half bad. I enjoyed my sundae. I added caramel and pecans. Coffee and Chocolate ice cream. Tonight I visited the Calloway location. After 15 minutes I was convinced, this is, without a doubt, the worst local business I have ever visited. The ice cream is decent, the service was terrible, and the prices were completely unjustified. I have been to Dewar's a few times and always leave disappointed. Tonight was the last straw. After being seated for 10 minutes without being acknowledged we were finally presented with a menu. When I informed the waitress that I knew what I wanted she simply walked away and talked to her friends who were visiting her (who arrived after me). The employees are high-schoolers who gossip about their customers and give them dirty stares. Great ice cream. Review is about customer service: pulled up to curbside pickup and called to order a half gallon of vanilla. I had my 2 year old asleep in the car so didn't want to take her out and informed them of this. I was told I had to pay with plastic even though I was outside. I had to take my sleeping daughter inside because their policy was to not take cash to avoid having to come back out for change. Customer service classes may be in order. read more

Dewars is THE BEST ice cream shop in Bakersfield, hands down. My dad has been taking me here since I was a baby and it's still our go-to place! There's so many awesome choices, they definitely have something for everyone. I would definitely recommend either the Black & White or the traditional Banana Split. Milkshake wise, the George's Special is delicious and they also have the best Strawberry Milkshake in town! (Those are just my personal favorites, everything else is also super delicious!) Prices aren't half bad either. The service is also always amazing, everyone always has a smile on their face and you are never waiting long to get your treats! 10/10 would recommend! read more

The Ice cream here was great. Coming from out of town, I wanted to go to a local restaurant, and I saw this store when I was driving down the road. It is a very busy area, but it wasn't that busy inside, which was nice. I only gave it a 3 star because of the employees. Thank you Kyle. If it weren't for you we would have left. Several groups entered after us and not one was greeted. It was a let down. I understand work gets busy, but at least say welcome, hello, something... each worker here today should take some personal responsibility for this review and do better. There are currently 6 people behind the cashier counter and only 1 is helping the 2 guests there. We generally get better service and feel okay with expecting that as paying guests. This is a family favorite for us to cool down and get some family time over some excellent ice cream. This is Bakersfield's finest ice cream and candy stop. It's a contemporary retro setup with a great environment with friendly service. The service does vary depending on who the server is. I also have casual staff and business meetings here as well. It's pretty quiet in the early mid afternoon time. Their ice milk is excellent and their non dairy ice strawberry is superb. The chocolate ice milk tastes exactly like the fudge bar Popsicle. My default is their lemon flake with marshmallow cream and almonds. I also recommend the Black and white and their floats. The dewars chews are the best. They do give samples of you ask for one or two. So any flavors to choose from. Sample their ice cream and enjoy. read more

The chews are 14.99/lb which is insanely expensive but they tasted pretty good. The atmosphere instantly makes you happy with all the bright colors, but the workers behind the counter weren't as uplifting. They acted like they didn't want to be there and weren't very helpful or considerate of someone who had never ordered chews before or stepped into the store. They weren't open to questions on how the process works because they assume everyone knows. Would've been 5 stars if the service was better. read more

i'm kind of torn in my review of this place.. first, we were so lucky there was no wait when we went altho we did end up choosing to sit at the bar. the waitress was super nice and bubbly. i sampled like 5 different flavors, and she never made me feel bad. i ended up getting the cotton candy and lemon flake. after a few bites though, i didn't really like them anymore. my bf got the english toffee (AMAZING. i definitely recommend this one) and i think the peppermint. the two flavors actually went well together. out of all 4 flavors, i really liked only the english toffee. i shall have to sample 5 more flavors next time i go... they did a great job with the interior. i know some ppl were not happy with it, but i think it's a really great, modernized, and refreshing look to the classic dewar's. i like it. seems like a super cute place to hold a kids' birthday party especially with the bright pink and large tables. they also have a cute candy store with over-priced gifts, as expected. their taffy is still delicious: peppermint and caramel are my favorite. i tried some of their freaking MANY new flavors but...they're not really good. stick to the original flavors! read more

I love, love, love ICE CREAM! Especially Dewar's! This location has a modern, yet old fashioned style that I adore. Every time we came here, we did have to wait for a booth. It's always so packed but worth the wait. The staff are always energetic and friendly and service is always quick. Their portions are pretty generous and the sundaes are worth sharing. First time here! Amazing! We (2 adults 2 under 5) shared a Black and Tan. I added marshmallow topping and walnuts. It was under $7 and fed us all! The vanilla ice cream is to die for. Kids got some sour sugar in a tube and the husband got some sugar free taffy. The peanut butter taffy is delicious! I could literally eat the entire bag! Carmel taffy is awesome also!
