Dewey's is always on the list when I'm in the area. I've only ever had the cake squares and I'm more than satisfied with the selection and quality every time. They are not as cute as $6 cupcakes but they are definitely a delicious value. My favorite flavors are pink lemonade (may be a little too sweet for some), vanilla, and chocolate on chocolate. I believe I've had some tasty red velvet squares there, too, but don't recall seeing them when I was there last. They also have very cute "Carolina" gifts and decor for purchase. Classic white cake and vanilla frosting (extra flowers here for ya girl) and you are all set. My sister called in a speciality cake for a gender reveal. I was excited to pick it up and it was busy like all good bakeries are. Fairly new to the area and we didn't know how they did their process for online pick ups that were already paid for. My husband and I got called to the next open register and we said we were there to pick up a cake. Lady in a gray tshirt comes from the back looking irritated she had to be there in the first place. She tells us in a nasty tone that we had go to the back of the line and go through the long line again to talk to someone else. The older man who was helping us explained that we already went through the line and she started getting rude with him too. Interesting way to treat a coworker in front of customers. Finally, we get our cake and the cashier apologized on the rude lady's behalf. Walked out in tears shocked by the interaction. It ruined the rest of my day and ruined my excitement to cut into the cake. First time expecting mom and I feel like this exciting experience was taken from me. Here's a tip to the "manager" or whoever the lady in the gray tshirt is: Places get busy, don't work in food service and take out your bad mood on someone just because you're mad at the world for doing your job. I sent my daughter and her husband six cupcakes from Dewey's Bakery today, getting them delivered to their home through DoorDash as the bakery recommended. Dewey's will deliver cakes but requires DoorDash for delivery of their pastries and cupcakes. I have never used Dewey's before, so I asked my daughter to let me know how they taste. She was thrilled to get them, said how beautiful and tasty they are, and told me that she had enjoyed some of their baked goods before at her work. Thank you, Dewey's Bakery, for making this so easy and for providing such a great product. If you are looking for sweet treats AND customer service, do not go to the bakery at 262 S Stratford. I was overcharged $10.00, but I didn't see the receipt until later when I checked my email. I responded to the Square email receipt and explained that I was overcharged, but I never heard back. I tried calling the shop, but I sat on hold for six minutes before I was transferred to voicemail. I left a message, but I never heard back. I finally had to go out of my way to return to the shop a few days later. I asked to see the manager, but I was told she was busy. Another employee tried to help me, but she didn't know how to do the transaction, so she got the manager. When the manager approached me as I was waiting at the counter, she never made eye contact, never looked in my direction, and didn't say one word to me. I asked her if the employee had told her about my experience. She hadn't, so I explained that no one ever responded to my messages. The manager then asked me if I wanted something because I was inconvenienced, meaning something from the bakery. I asked for an apology instead. Her response was, "Well, this is the first time I'm hearing about this, so I'm sorry???" I was charged $17.35 for something that was supposed to cost $7.35. I shouldn't have had to explain anything to get a simple apology. That should have been the first thing out of her mouth. This was the first time I had ever been to Dewey's, and it will be my last time at this location. read more

The area where they sell the sweet stuff is in the back and off to the left hand side in the back. They are popular for the pink lemonade squares. Which is REALY GOOD! Ahhh Dewey's a staple in my life for years and years and probably the reason I weigh the number that I do. They offer traditional Moravian baked goods, cake squares, eclairs, tarts, and so much more. My personal favorites are their ice cream and ice cream cakes. I am hard pressed to find a quality ice cream cake these days and Dewey's has nailed it. Not to mention the ice cream itself. They have multiple options that have their fresh baked cake squares folded into the ice cream (specifically red velvet, pink lemonade, chocolate cake, and birthday cake). Drove 40 miles to order a $300 cake and when we got there, there was a van and camera crew that was filming and they said that the store was closed today. The website and Google said it was confirmed open by the business! They didn't care that we drove all the way to order in person. Got no help. Called the store and asked them why they didn't announce online they were closed. She said they were filming for QVC channel. I really love Dewey's. It's located in the Thruway Shopping Center, where traffic can be a nightmare sometimes. So getting in a out can sometimes be a bit of a mess. The employees are always nice. They've always been patient if I take a moment to figure out what I want/need and helpful if I have any questions. They've also got a ton of packaged goodies, breads, cookies, cheese straws, desserts etc. Perfect for holidays or shipping to friends or family a bit of WS-NC love. It seems like they have expanded on their gift section as well. Lots of ceramic mugs, travel mugs, and those cute insulated water bottles. They've also got cards in case you happen to be picking up a birthday cake and need a card to go with it. Even though there is a lot of stuff, the store is easy to navigate. I like that the gifts and other knick knacks are situated in that you walk past them in order to get to the bakery cases. A good chance to take a look at things that catch your eye before ordering your goodies. Also a good marketing strategy. The cake squares are delish and they're buy 5 get 1 free, good if you need a full dozen! Many of their other pastries are also buy 5 get 1 free. The cream horns are popular, I've only had them a few times and they are good but not something I would always get. I love their pecan tarts though! Dewey's has always given me such nostalgia, since I used to always go with my Yia-Yia when I went to spend the weekends with her. She lived near the one on Reynolda though. So as I was browsing I saw the love feast buns that she always used to send home with me so I nearly teared up in the middle of the isle. I really want to give this place a higher score, but the baked goods I got was that of a two star place. This place is located in a strip mall with a trader joes as a anchor store. When you first walk in, the place looks kinda weird, because on the right there are like arts and crafts that you can buy and I had to double check to make sure I was at the right place. After noticing the baked goods case was towards the back, I make my way there. Everything is beautifully presented and I really wanted to try everything. I ask the counter later whats popular and she said the cream horns and the eclair. So I decide to get some brownies to bring back home, in addition to an eclair and one more item that was next to the brownies. Some yelpers said to try the Pink lemonade cake square so I get that one and eat it there and was I in for a surprise. The frosting on the cake square was sickeningly sweet, and everything tasted artificial and fake. i would have liked it if it was more natural tasting but some people do like their cakes tasting artificial, i do not. I then tried the brownies when I got home to WNY and three was no chocolate flavor at all. I was like what happened to the flavor, it was completely lacking. I did like their eclair thought so that was one good thing i liked from there. Over all, it missed the mark for me in terms of over all flavor. Dewey's is a Winston-Salem staple. I went last night with a few friends and we sampled many of their goods. Here is a quick run down: Pink Lemonade Cake - my favorite; only available during the spring and summer. a great pairing of sweet and tart. Red Velet Cake - meh; lacked some of the red velvet flavor; the icing was really "cream cheesy" enough for our group Chocolate Cake/Chocolate Icing - very good; rich without being heavy White cake/white icing - the most surprising of the bunch; a very good vanilla flavor coming right from the cake itself; the icing provided a nice compliment Oatmeal Creme Pie - OCP for short; homemade outmeal cookies and homemade creme in between them; perfection They were a bit backed up when we got there. Apparently they are starting to serve frozen drinks which slows down the service a lot. Nonetheless, the lady who helped us out was really friendly. She even reminded us that we got one more free cake square because we had bought 5. Do yourself a favor and go to Dewey's. Pick up a variety of treats and enjoy them with friends. My friend brought me to Dewey's for the first time for a sweet afternoon pick-me-up. I loved the amazingly sweet smell upon walking into the shop. Mmmmmm. My friend was in the mood for one of their giant cookies but they were out of chocolate chip so we got 6 cake squares to sample instead. I picked: white cake with white icing, chocolate cake with chocolate icing and red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. I opted to not try their "famous" pink lemonade cake because it was too artificial looking: hot pink cake with neon yellow icing. Eh. My favorite was the white cake with white icing. It definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. I wasn't overly impressed with the red velvet but the chocolate was rich and delectable. I intended to bring a square home for my husband but I think it "fell off the truck" on the way home after hitting up the grocery store. :-) My major qualm with this place was how BUSY it was. There was literally no where to move and there were tons of kids in there who had no awareness of their surroundings and were all over the place and in the way. But, I guess, a crowd is a sign of a good business but it made me kind of anxious. Dewey's has seating inside and out for you to enjoy your treat or you can take it to go. Prices did seem a touch high but the cake squares did seem the most reasonable at like $1-something each compared to a cupcake of basically the same size for like $2-3. A lady at Trader Joe's recommended the sugar cake. We were not impressed it was very dry. I mentioned to the gal that was helping me that I was not from the area and was looking for suggestions. She wasn't very helpful and offered no input on any of the cake flavors. When checking out with a credit card there was a prompt as to if you wanted to leave a tip. It's totally worth it just for the Eggnog Shortbread Cookies and the Hot Cocoa Shortbread Cookies. Addicting and delicious. The bakery itself is precious...open area to watch things being made and decorated, organized shelves of treats and goodies from cheese straws to maple syrup. I grew up in the Winston-Salem area, and if there was one mainstay for baked and sweet goods, it's Dewey's. I remember it was always a great treat when we stopped by (I remember the Thruway location best in my youth) and get something as it was near to my mother's workplace (and so was Krispy Kreme, but I digress...). This one is at a new location on Country Club Rd in Winston-Salem, near the intersection with Peace Haven Rd. It has a very updated feel to it, more of a cafe style place than the classic bakery type shop I grew up with when entering a Dewey's. It was very clean and well kept, as it is pretty new I understand. It was a great place to enjoy a bit of dessert and coffee after lunch with my parents last weekend. It's a very inviting and warm atmosphere to enjoy some goodies. All the old standbys that I remember are there. The sugar cake, coffee cakes, array of cookies, cakes, and other sweets are just as I remember. I had to get the brownies, and they are just as amazing I remembered them. Moist, chocolaty, and just melt-in-your-mouth good! I confess, I had more than one, and it was worth it. Adorable! Part ice cream store, part trinket shop and part bakery, this place was a nice little stop after my family and I enjoyed lunch in the same shopping plaza. While they offer a wide variety of baked goods, one of the best deals in the place are there cake squares! $1 for a generous square of sheet cake. The sheet cake flavor/frosting options are pretty standard for the most part- vanilla or chocolate cake with vanilla or chocolate frosting. They do offer a couple "specialty" flavors as well including red velvet and a lemonade cake square. I had the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Very moist and fresh and definitely hit the spot. The best thing was that because we happened to visit on a Monday, our cake squares were actually free! We didn't know it when we arrived and fully intended on paying our dollar, but on Mondays everyone receives a complimentary cake square! That was a sweet surprise! read more

The products are fine, but god help you if you need customer service. They do not answer their phones----try this number 877.339.3974....it is supposed to be a customer service number. However when it answers, your are always number 2 on the line, then you become number 1 and after waiting for about 4 minutes, a voice comes on and says they cant take your call. Same recording and routine each time- it is shameful, I have never seen an example of customer abuse like that. HInt- Deweys- just don't answer the phone, its far more polite that your insulting recording. read more

This establishment came highly recommended by many people I know, and I must say I was not disappointed. They have a wide variety of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, you name it. They also have ice cream available, which I haven't tried yet but plan to. I got their banana pudding cake and a cinnamon roll. Both of which were excellent! Another great aspect of this place is that they are also a gift shop, and have cards for all occasions, as well as some candy and some bottled soda. The layout is not bakery shopper friendly. You need to know exactly what you want from the bakery because you are asked to order before the items are in view. You cannot wait to view everything because you are pushed towards the cash register. This probably isn't an issue during slow times. Today we wanted to see everything available but were not able to. We just moved to the Winston-Salem area. We saw them on Door Dash and ordered. This is the best bakery I have EVER eaten. They make everything in house and have been for years (so I read) and it shows. Everything is fresh and we order later in the afternoon and it was all good! We will order them more. Dewey used to be the go to for Moravian goodies but the recipes have drastically change. The thin ginger cookies look like sugar cookies and a faint tint of ginger. I grew up eating my grandmothers ginger cookies from a large tin. They are difficult to roll so thin making them good. Please go back to original ginger cookies from Old Salem. I was given these cookies as a gift and have not bought cookies there in years. Mrs Hanes cookies are the original recipe and very delicious! My work travels brought me to Winston Salem last week. As usual, I do research of a local bakery to make the dessert for my party. I was hosting the Yelp Triad Elite Squad at Hickory Tavern and Dewey's came highly recommended. I had a coworker call with specific instructions and details of exactly what I'm looking for. I had 4 dozen cupcakes ordered and of course through the insistence of many people, I ordered two pink lemonade cupcakes to go. All tasted simply divine! They were reasonably priced and their little shop was adorable! With a lot of unique boutique gifts. The Pink Lemonade was my favorite but the chocolate and vanilla were good too! I did feel like they could have done a little better with the Yelp logo (see picture). It came out looking dark and not as bright red as other cakes I've had done in the past. The color shading wasn't a good choice. Not sure why they came out that way as I sent pictures of past cupcakes from other events.
