I learned ten years ago when Dr. Kapoor was my PCP that people were saying nasty things about her on Yelp. I must admit that has left me with the conviction that Yelp is a tool for people to be libelous and hence I have not left a review but ten years have past that is water under the bridge. Dr. Kapoor took excellent care of me when living in Santa Clara for 7+ years between 2017-2016. She is affiliated with O'Connor hospital and her office is close by. She has her own practice, so does not have the overhead of a medical group and takes the usual insurances. One thing I noticed is that she is very good at referring to specialists that are both very competent and price competitive, i.e. colonoscopy, eye and ear doctor. I am very well taken care of here in Massachusetts but my colonoscopy was 2-3 times the cost. She took over the practise from my previous doctor 1996-2006 and kept in touch with that doctor when she was very sick of kidney disease more than ten years later. She bombarded us with unsolicited advice, and when we asked her to replace a form, she charged us $350. She told my mom that she was going to take her off of a medication for no clear reason. My mom reminded her that she needs that medication to digest her food every single day. It was prescribed. Here is my experience this week. My mom was supposed to and was taking the medication three times a day according to her nurse practitioner. Somehow the medication was only prescribed for two pills a day and the medication was out before she could refill it. I don't live right near my mom, but she wasn't doing well so she stayed with me for a week. I had to figure out her meds, something I don't usually manage. In an effort to get this medication filled, I went onto Walgreen's pharmacy website. It gave a notice saying it needed doctor approval. I called the doctor and she said they had prescribed it and that it must be an insurance issue. I called the insurance and they said her refill wasn't for over a month from now. It took me a minute to realize the discrepancy in dosage, which made it clear to me why she ran out early. I assume it was miscommunication between caregivers. I was told by insurance to call the doctor and ask them to re-prescribe it for three pills a day instead of two. This is now the second call I had made to the doctor in just a few days. I realize doctors are busy and they have their hands full, especially when dealing with elderly patients who struggle with memory loss and confusion. I don't know what my mom's relationship with this doctor has been, but it obviously has been tense. It is professional and the law to refer patient to a new doctor if they are difficult, not be rude to their children who are trying to help the. After a few days, I checked on the website for the prescription and it wasn't there. I assumed that meant it hadn't been handled yet. I don't typically manage my mom's medication so that was the way I thought I should handle it. I called the doctor for the third time and just asked for the status of the new prescription. The doctor got on the phone, yelled at me and told me not to call anymore. She said I kept calling and that I need to call Walgreens first. Then she hung up on me. my assumption from this reaction was that maybe my mom had been calling her frequently, but I can't know because I wasn't given any opportunity to understand the situation. I was shocked and deeply upset, especially after the week I've had trying to help my mom get through some very difficult times. I am a firm believer in sharing my feelings about how people treat me, so later I called the office back calmly and asked to speak to the doctor again. They wouldn't let me speak to her, so I asked for them to send a message and said that I was unhappy with how the doctor yelled at me and said to stop calling and then hung up on me...the receptionist proceeded to lecture me, telling me to stop calling and saying that they didn't even know who I was, and not to call again. Then she hung up on me. Again, I am in shock. In my defense Danhu, I thought by going on the Walgreen's website before calling the you again was me being diligent. I don't typically manage her medications, so I was doing the best I knew how. For future I will call the pharmacy rather than rely on the website to be up to date. It is unfortunate I had to learn this lesson in such a harsh way. To the receptionist, it is your job to confirm my identity when I call...every time. You did not ask me who I was. You did not try to confirm that you could talk to me. That is a violation of HIPAA. If you had asked you would have seen that it was okay to talk to me. If it wasn't, then I could have had my mom give consent. That is on you. I am a TK teacher and value kindness and listening to others without jumping to conclusions. I have taught my 8 year old daughter that doctors are an integral part of our society and that they help us stay healthy. Sadly, my eight year-old daughter was in the backseat while I was on speakerphone during this call. She was very upset and confused at the interaction. I explained to her that some people are unhappy and choose to take things out on others and we can try to be compassionate and understand where they are coming from, but to be honest, this treatment was extremely upsetting to me in a way that I haven't experienced. My hope for this group is that they will learn from this review to give people the benefit of the doubt and trust that they're doing the best they can with the information they have at the time. That stopping and listening is a virtue not to be ignored. And that if you don't want to deal with elderly people who are struggling mentally, then maybe stick to younger patients. Doctor and receptionist are unprofessional, I'll mannered, I made an appt and was seen after waiting 1.5hours!!! When I asked, why the long wait, she said she was waiting for us to complete the paperwork!!!!! The paperwork is 2 pages and toon me 3 minutes. WHAT? I called to ask about costs and the procedure. My family underwent a medical examination for green cards, although it was expensive, but we did it and everything was fine. Later, our documents got lost in the mail and I needed copies of medical records to resend to immigration office (documents are valid for 1 year). Dr. Kapoor said it would cost me $600. (It's copy, all she had to do is print them again. Not much work on her part.) I agreed as we had no other option. And 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment, as we were already driving there, Dr. Kapoor changed the price to $1,400, without explaining the reasons. I was in shock!!!! Of course, I refused, because for me this is an unreal and incomprehensible situation. When I recovered from shock, I started looking for another clinic and it turned out that the price was much lower to undergo the whole process again than for Dr. Kapoor to print out copies, and they also offered us a discount, understanding the situation. Also my immigration lawyer said that every clinic should have no problems printing out copies for free. I strongly recommend you avoid this clinic because if you get in a similar situation Dr. Kapoor will try to cash in on your misfortunes. read more

Oh, the amount of problems. Dr. Kapoor is rude, mannerless, and does not care about the well-being of her patients. She is a poor excuse for a doctor. She does not properly answer your questions and responds to them very impolitely. I scheduled my appointment for a physical and to check my varicose veins. She did not perform a real physical on me, however. She told me she only performs pap-smear (touching you to check for any issues), which is a part of the physical, on returning patients. If you only perform it on returning patients, why take new patients in the first place? When I was talking to her about an itchiness I had, she negatively commented on the medication that I was using. She sarcastically asked me what kind of doctor prescribed this kind of medication. I found it very unprofessional for a doctor to be criticizing the choices of another doctor. I told her that my legs were now hurting from standing up a lot, due to my varicose veins. When I asked her what solutions there were, she sarcastically told me to quit my job and offered no real solutions. What kind of answer is that? I left the office feeling very dissatisfied. When I called later on, the receptionist told me I was calling during a "busy time" and that I was disturbing them. She told me I was taking up too much of their time. Then she hung up on me. I didn't want to believe the reviews - so I went to establish a PCP relationship. My first visit was a well women's visit which requires $0 co-pay. However, I was requested time and again by the front desk for a co-pay. Luckily I'd checked with my insurance prior. Sadly you need to know your insurance inside and out when visiting. Also both of my bill's have been extraordinarily high for being a well women's visit and a follow-up appointment. They really do throw every code possible at the insurance company and you have to then discuss with your insurance company. Unfortunately you'll need to believe the reviews on this one and take your healthcare elsewhere. Also very little follow through from the doctor's recommendation to a follow-up visit. There is no communication between the doctor and the front desk so you're often wondering if you need to do anything. All in all super odd business practice. read more

**BEWARE**. I would give 0 if that was an option. I went to her for green card-related immunization. Blood test showed latent TB(as with many Asians), but the chest x-ray was clear. In spite of that, she wrote something in the health form due to which the immigration office at first said she needs to look into it more. I thankfully had the presence of mind and told her that it is latent TB and that the chest x-rays are clear and I handed a copy of the xraay results to her. The immigration officer mumbled as to why the doctor did not write that clearly. I got the green card, but anyone reading this please please please do yourself a favor and find a better doctor. Many issues.. She asked to take follow up appointment to treat latent TB, for which I told that I need to consult with my family (many doctors in the family but outside country). To which she came out of her cabin and THREATENED that she will report to the county and the county will put me behind bars!!!! Very unprofessional, when I called the office for a small clarification, they wanted me to take an appointment and pay for it to get the question clarified. Came here on a Thursday afternoon. I was greeted by the receptionist and handed her my insurance information. She processed it and was told everything looked good and to follow her into the room. Long story short, I had about 10 heavy display blocks fall on me; as I was trying to move away, the corner of one hit my middle fingernail really hard and the fake nail split in half but didn't fall off. No bleeding either but I could feel the swelling. Didn't know if my finger was possibly fractured or not. I told Dr Kapoor about the situation and she told me she was going to remove the bandages before moving forward. She asked me if I wanted to sit on the edge of the bed or in a chair. I shrugged and said it didn't matter and since I was already sitting on the bed, I would stay there. She went to get scissors and a tweezer and right before cutting the bandage, she stopped and told me to move to a chair. I listened and just assumed that it was more comfortable for her so I moved to a chair. She then explained to me she wanted me to sit there in case I passed out. I guess she saw the puzzled look on my face because she reiterated and told me that people do. Again, I nodded and assumed she was just being cautious. She took off the bandage and looked at my fingernail and then kind of backed up and told me that this was very serious and she would need to immediately take off the whole nail. She was so tense and serious, I got scared and I agreed with her and asked her what the issue was. She just kept repeating that I needed to take off the nail and needed to do it ASAP. She told her receptionist/assistant to get the paperwork and billing information. The receptionist came back and explained that I would out of pocket need to pay $800 for the procedure. Wtf what was she going to do to my fingernail that apparently AFTER INSURANCE, I still needed to pay $800?! I asked her what the procedure was and she told me she was going to numb my finger with numbing cream and take out my nail. She added if I waited too long, I could possibly lose feeling in my middle finger and (using hand gestures: scissor cutting her middle finger) yeah she definitely put a whole lot of scare into me. I told her that I would have to reschedule plus didn't have just $800 on the spot to spare and needed to bring my card next time. She told me that she could just charge it on my credit card if I gave her information. I told her I'd rather reschedule and inform my parents about the situation as well before moving forward. It took some time but she finally told me she was going to schedule me for an early appt the next day. I left the office and went to work. I told my coworker about what had just happened and my manager decided to call them. She called and spoke with the receptionist, Evelyn. She asked about the procedure and what made it come out to $800. After a while, the receptionist put us on hold and then came back and told us that it was $800 because they were located outside my insurance plan. SERIOUSLY?! I asked her MULTIPLE times back at the office if my insurance covered the procedure and if the bill was after my insurance and she looked at me and answered YES AND THIS IS AFTER PROCESSING WHAT IS COVERED UNDER YOUR INSURANCE. Not once did she tell me that they were located outside the region of my plan. I went to a different doctor the next day which was covered under my insurance. Doctor was sweet and explained to me that I should take a few days and try to remove the fake nail myself by soaking it in water since it was putting pressure on my nail and if possible she wanted to avoid removing the real nail. In the case I had to remove the real nail, I would need not one but two anesthetic shots deep in between my fingers and it would be pretty painful just getting the shots. I told her that the other doctor wanted to use numbing cream and if that was the case, I could opt to do that. She gave me a startled look and told me if she removed my nail using numbing cream, I would most likely faint due to the immense pain I would be feeling and that I possibly heard wrong (which I didn't, 100% Dr Kapoor told me she would be using numbing cream) In the end, everything worked out and I didn't have to take out my nail. Also to add, I am merely stating my experience and the events that took place during the visit and that I am so thankful I avoided having to pay a ridiculous amount of money for possibly an unnecessary and excruciatingly painful procedure. read more

Dr Dhanu Kapoor has been my primary physician for over 10 years. I found her to be honest, straight-forward, professional, and conscientious. It's difficult to reconcile the negative reviews with the doctor I know. She's extremely knowledgeable and has seen me through various illnesses, sprains, falls, hay fever, and recommended great specialists for more serious issues. Never had a problem with her receptionists. Her phone messaging service is available 24/7. I highly recommend Dr. Kapoor, but you have to find the doctor or medical network that is right for you. read more

The office manager, Cynthia, is very disorganized, unprofessional, and rude. I'm having billing issues due to medical services charged to an incorrect carrier. This was due to Dr. Kapoor's office staff not properly updating my insurance information. I spoke with Cynthia, back in January, regarding an unpaid bill. We discovered that my old carrier was being charged. I explained that I gave the office my new insurance info back in November. She mentioned that she would speak with their accountant to get this fixed and would call me if they needed more info. For 3 months I have not received any calls or emails so assumed it was resolved. I was completely wrong. I am now receiving collection calls for a $450 doctor's visit that my current insurance could have covered. I spoke with their accountant and she never received my updated info from the office. What was the office manager's response to all of this? "This is your responsibility...you need to take care of it, not us." It was their mistake!! A clerical error like this could have easily been fixed. During this whole process, I felt mistreated, disrespected, and helpless. Dr. Kapoor is a great doctor. I've always felt comfortable with her medical care and trusted her advice. She's attentive, friendly, and always understood any issues I had. However, I'm no longer her patient due to the negative customer service and incompetent office staff. The trust isn't there anymore. How can I trust a practice that deals with my personal information this way? I would have liked to reach out to Dr. Kapoor personally about this, but they wouldn't give me any options to talk to her or even email her. I went to this "doctor" and she told me I had diabetes and I was a drug user (i am most certainly not but she expressed she knew she was lying and I'd need to take drug tests before she would continue as well as blood tests for the diabetes). I went to her for a physical examination required for immigration services. She was critical of my general physician and the supplements he had recommended me. I came here for immigration documents and "Doctor" Dhanu Kapoor should not have ever been given this title. The most unprofessional human being I have ever interacted with. It's hard to review a doctor without revealing personal info but I agree with the other one star reviews. I came for a simple thing and she insisted I have a non-related major medical issue that even as a non-medical person I didn't think was possible given my lack of symptoms and healthy history. I got a second opinion from a real doctor that laughed at this 'doctor's' faulty diagnosis and got to the actual root of the problem. My experience was very similar to what Michael K described, but for a different issue. I've also had to ask four times for a copy of a medical record that she kept evasively saying she would provide but only did so after I showed up in person a third time. She did have a very unpleasant personality and there are many better doctors in the Bay Area so there's thankfully no reason to settle for it here. It's much worse to go to a one-star doctor than a one-star restaurant, so definitely AVOID! read more

Here is an email exchange I got from them. Dear Janice, This is Evelin from Dr. Kapoors Office, I was trying to have a conversation with you but you did not let me talk or complete my conversation and hung up on me. The conversation was about the review you posted on yelp which came to our attention a few days ago. We have been trying to reach you since. The review is totally and completely not true and that is what Dr. Kapoor was going to let you know. She did everything right medically and legally in taking care of you and ordering for the appropriate test. I would appreciate if you can take the review down and we will give you 24 hours. If you failed to do so, you will be receiving a defamation letter from our attorneys office with all the facts. AND MY REPLY TO THEM: Thanks Evelin: Just to make it clear, I do not hang up on people and I didn't hang up on you, I just stated I have no interest in talking with the doctor. Your attempt to be intimidating is both childish and rude. Stop contacting me or this email exchange will be on yelp too. An attorney did forward them a letter for me and they attached it to an email and sent it to me. The attorney stated he did not like the word that is the sound a duck makes so please ignore that word in my review. The attorney also did not like it that my review said wrong diagnosis was given by the doctor, I tried to find a second doctor to agree with Dr. Kapoor's but I have not found that doctor yet, still looking. read more

DR. Dhanu Kapoor is a strong and experienced physician who cares deeply about her patients and about them getting the best possible medical treatment. I have been a patient of Dr. Kapoors for about ten years. She has treated me for high blood pressure, cholesterol, depression and type 2 diabetes. These are challenging lifestyle conditions which require me to take medications as prescribed and make the necessary changes to my lifestyle. Each visit includes a mandatory weight and high blood pressure measurement. Diabetes and depression are challenging conditions, as the pharmaceuticals prescribed can change over time. I am very impressed at how Dr. Kapoor treats every patient as an individual, how she is able to remember their family members, and how she works hard to see that they get the best treatment possible out of the health care system. Once when I acquired a tropical parasite from a visit to Mexico, Dr. Kapoor was able to quickly diagnose it. She also referred me to a eye-nose-ear specialist for a nasal condition. with disease we are sometimes our own worst enemies, I know that I myself ask Dr. Kapoor for help only not to do what to say. Needless to say I have learned over time that that is wrong. Dr. Kapoor accepts both patients with medicare and patients that do not have insurance on reasonable terms. One of the things that I like about her office is that there are great cartoons. Besides her office work, Dr. Kapoor has admission privileges with nearby El Camino hospital. Her office staff including Evelyn are competent and patient with billing and insurance issues. read more

I had an unfortunate set of experiences with this doctor. I made an appt on a Wednesday for the following Friday. On Thursday, I received a voicemail while I was at work confirming my appt, which stated, "if we do not hear back from you, we will see you Friday at 9 am." I arrived at my appt on time, but the office was closed; I called the receptionist, and she said, "I called you yesterday, and you didn't confirm." I reminded her what her message said, she apologized, and Dr. Kapoor came on the line and agreed to see me the following Monday. I showed up on time for my appointment, but the office was closed again. I called the office number, and Dr. Kapoor answered and told me she would be right there, she was across the street at her other Hospital job. I waited despite this making me late for work. She arrived, opened the office, and gave me the paperwork to fill out, where I stated I was having new wrist pain and wanted an ortho referral as I had an HMO. she walked in the room and said, "so what is it, anxiety, insomnia?" (Note: this line of questioning is mentioned in other reviews here as well.) I found this a bit rude but explained the pain I had been experiencing and how it was affecting my ability to work out. She told me to stop lifting weights and wanted some basic blood work. I agreed to get that done and come back for another appt. The blood work was normal, but she was not willing to give me an Ortho referral, nor any other diagnostic workups like an MRI or nerve conduction study; she wanted me to take a multivitamin and not use weights. On my third visit, where I needed a physical for Grad school, I asked again about the referral, and she gave me the number of an ortho surgeon in the area to call. I called her office later that day because I forgot to have the paperwork for the school signed. The receptionist told me it would cost $400. I reminded her I was in the office this morning, and she stated the cost again. I asked her if she felt comfortable charging me $400 for this. She placed me on hold and came back and said Dr. Kapoor said $100 was fine. As this was time sensitive, I agreed. I went to the Ortho Dr she referred me to, with the understanding that she knew I needed a referral as I had made 3 appts with her to get said referral. I saw this other doctor 2 times, after which I changed my health plan with my work in order to access Sutter Health, as many colleagues had far better experiences than I was having with my Valley Health Plan Insurance. A month later, I received 2 bills from the Ortho doctor for over $500. After a few hours on the phone with my health insurance, trying to understand why I was being charged when I had insurance, I found out that Dr. Kapoor had never turned in the referral. The insurance rep called Dr. Kapoor, and she yelled at him, "of course I know that patient needed a referral to see that doctor, of course, I made the referral, don't call me with this B.S." and hung up. After months of appealing this with my insurance company, they covered one bill as they understood I was well aware that I needed a referral and was under the impression I had received one, but I am still responsible for over $200. I waited to post this review until it was resolved. I am in the medical field as an RN and have seen and experienced an array of personalities and bedside manners among medical professionals, but was astonished by the way this woman treated me and others. I advise anyone seeking a new MD to read these reviews and avoid this woman at all costs. read more

If i could give this woman NEGATIVE STARS, I would. She doesn't even deserve to be called a doctor!! I showed up to my 2:30pm appointment early (1:50pm)since I was a first time patient. I am in extreme pain due to my tonsil and she could NOT wait to get me out! Not only did she basically kick me out, she gave me a lot of attitude and was extremely rude considering I did absolutely NOTHING to her. She looked at my mouth from ACROSS the room with a FLASHLIGHT and prescribed me lord knows what!! SHE DIDNT EVEN TELL ME WHAT IT WAS. ON TOP OF THE INEXCUSABLE BEHAVIOR AND LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM SHE PROFILED ME!!! A short, sick, Filipino girl who is seeking MEDICAL HELP!!! She asked me if I did drugs, which is normal per protocol, BUT... after I said "no" the first THREES times, she continued to ask me if I did drugs and started naming out substances!! DO. NOT. COME. HERE!!!!!!!!!! GET OFF YOUR HUGH HORSE KAPOOR AND START TREATING YOUR PATIENTS LIKE PATIENTS!!!! If you hate your job THAT much do us all a favor and quit!!! Dr. Kapoor has been my parents primary care physician for 2 years. Within that time she has neglected to call the pharmacy to fill their medication several times even when reminded, she has not allowed their home caregiver to enter the room during appointments and my father is in a wheelchair, she has criticized my mother's medication bag, and has told her if she is unhappy with the care to find another doctor. This is what we finally had to do but please dont subject yourself or your elderly parents to her rude and unkind bedside manner. read more

Dr. Kapoor is a very good doctor and she treated me in 2015. Initially I was apprehensive about the thing she said to me but after few visits there was a remarkable change in me and I responded to the treatment. I am back in NJ after spending 2 years in CA. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place as your primary care. Even if you are a healthy individual I'm not so sure. I should preface that I was never an actual patient here but had a family member (i.e. aunt) that was. Below are some of the dislikes regarding Dr. Kapoor's practice: 1) Front desk although nice is extremely slow. They take about a week to give you any test results. Even EKG. 2) Dr. Kapoor also is not the friendliest doctor I've encountered and doesn't seem like she cares much or any bit about her patients. 3) There was an incident with my aunt and I stated that ever since she had put her on a new medication regimen things have gotten gradually worse ultimately leading to the "incident" or episode. Dr. Kapoor's response was keep taking the medications that were clearly causing issues and that it may have been a seizure. I was highly skeptical regarding the response which involved continuing to take medications that were causing issues and also that it might be a seizure. Long story short we went to one medical, which was IMO a night and day experience. Test results come super fast. Slowest was 1-2 days. Fastest was in a matter of minutes (e.g EKG). Their front desk is extremely friendly and contrary to most front desk people they actually know things. The doctor at one medical was basically laughing at the idea that I told him a previous doctor thought it was a seizure and recommended we reduce the previous medications (that was causing numerous problems) from 8 medications (recommended by Dr. Kapoor) down to 4 medications (recommend one medical dose). We also had confirmations from 2 other doctors that stated generally that the combination of drugs that Dr. Kapoor recommend can be dangerous to mix together and that the dosages seem high. Since going to one medical things have gotten much better and things are looking much more hopeful. read more

It has now been over a year since I put myself in the care of Dr. Kapoor, and I cherish her as my primary physician now more than ever. She is always receptive to listening to me rant and rave about my newest concern. She is thorough with follow-up on long-term treatments, and is quick to get me referral information that I need. If I come to see her about a specific concern, she makes sure to follow up on anything else that is relevant to my whole well-being. She is a very kind woman who is also an invaluable resource. read more
