I'm on my sixth or seventh class. The lady (uncannily remembers your name) in the front warmly greets you to this peaceful oasis. It's a good place to find a quiet moment and to challenge your body to stretch in ways you're not even sure it exists. The teachers are down to earth and offer beginner to master level poses even in their advanced classes. I have yet to do a handstand! It's located in the same building as masons freebuilding (with glass windows/doors), look for the flags. What you will love is that they even have Yoga mat rentals (around $2). I like how it has some tea and water. The latest class starts at 6pm on weekdays, weekend classes are much earlier. There are classes for all levels and skill sets. Truly a teacher for all. I've never been to the studio but have taken various Zoom classes from them. I mostly liked them but they are definitely different from classes elsewhere. I couldn't find info on Yelp which would have helped me before taking a class, so here are some descriptions, in case helpful to you: - I took an all levels 60 minute "charging practice" which I would say was up to intermediate, although I think it included pincha early on right after a couple of sun salutations which caught me off guard. Other poses were generally what I expected from an open level class, good for any level. - I also took a level IV advanced class and I will say unless you have a regular, advanced practice and some exposure to advanced poses (kapo, feet behind head, dropbacks), or *most importantly*, KNOW what you need to do to not injure yourself attempting more advanced poses, I would not recommend online because so much of it really requires hands-on, in-person teaching, and often in a workshop or 1-1 format in my opinion. If you're not ready, there are NOT enough instructions to keep you from injuring yourself. - The IV class was more focused on advanced backbends (lost track of how many backbends we did - definitely felt like I made some progress there) but there were also advanced psoa stretches, hip openers, inversions, etc. Overall covered a lot of different poses. - I didn't feel warmed up enough for many of the poses in the IV class. Like I can do hanuman most days but need to warm up hamstrings instead of just launching into it.. I think this class is best if you either 1) can do these poses cold. Or 2) do a separate yoga practice earlier in the day so your body is already warm before class. That way you'll get more out of it. - overall the vibe was more like a guided practice (teacher calls out the asanas and minimally tells you what the variations are) as opposed to being taught (focus on proper alignment, what to look for / watch out for as you progress, etc.) read more

Hatha-Raja yoga at its best. Clean and spacious, this beautiful studio reminded me of a temple. I discovered this studio years ago when one of my kundalini teachers referred us here, and Sri Dharma Mittra is truly an amazing, funny and compassionate teacher with a beautiful vibe. I have taken his Yoga Nidra, Psychic Development, Master Classes, and Maha Shakti classes. I really enjoyed all the classes, however being an intuitive myself, I realized the psychic development class was not right for me because it was more of a weirdly structured workshop to help students access their gift rather than fine tune them with deeper and longer meditations. Each class except for Psychic Development has mats already laid down, but it is recommended to bring your own mat and place it on top of those mats for extra cushioning and for improved grip. I don't recommend mat rentals here because they are not always wiped down after each use. And for $2 per rental, I would expect them to be clean at all time. read more

Spent some time in NYC recently and am so grateful for the teachings of Dharma Mittra. I think he is a good example for us all. I was lucky enough to take some classes from him and I loved every single moment. His classes pushed me to the edge of what I thought I was capable of and gave me new insights about myself. I think Dharma brings out the best in a lot of his students. I loved the master classes. They were difficult but they also gave me inspiration on what is possible. I met so many wonderful people in the classes I attended there. I don't want to say they were enlightened but they were certainly further along in the process than many. I think this is because they take many classes from Dharma and are infused with such great knowledge from him. I love the feeling of the studio. It's a large space with beautiful adornments on the walls. It gives you a sense of openness and peace. It is a safe haven from the busy NY streets. If you can't take a class from Dharma because it doesn't fit into your schedule, not to worry. The other teachers are just as lovely, loving, kind, and spiritual as Dharma. Every class will leave you wanting more. Every teacher has some very special gift and will teach you things that you didn't know. Of course I don't think that Dharma Yoga is for everyone because we all have such different personalities, but I hope that everyone will take a class and "Be Receptive," to a different experience. read more

Taking any class with Sri Dharma Mittra is an honor, as can be seen from his jam packed Saturday 10am classes, but to truly experience the wisdom and compassion of a living master with almost 6 decades of experience, there's nothing that compares to Dharma's Life of a Yogi teacher training programs. I've had the privilege to participate in the Dharma LOAY 200hr program first in February 2018 and it was an exceptionally transformative experience for my yogic development. Dharma and his senior teachers and staff are all so warm, welcoming, and eager to share their vast knowledge of all things yoga with you. The studio is pristine, spacious, and always cozy, with plenty of room to sit and relax or meditate between sessions. The 200hr training is incredibly in depth, focusing on all 8 limbs of yoga on and off the mat. Dharma also leads morning pranayama and meditation, which were some of my favorite sessions. This past summer I had the opportunity to audit the 200hr LOAY program both in person and remote and I can only say that each time gets more rewarding. Dharma has a wealth of knowledge on yoga that goes far beyond just advanced asanas, and he is always willing to share what he knows with his students. What really sets the Dharma Yoga Center apart is the community that comes along with taking classes or participating in one of the training sessions. The senior teachers and training staff make themselves available for any questions or concerns you may have and are always happy to share the way with you. I'm a complete n00b at yoga and only have experience from here so I have nothing to compare this facility and instructors to. When this place was on 23rd st., I thought it was nice and clean. They'd make you take your shoes off in the hallway where they had a wall shoe rack. You'd check in at the desk. They had 2 makeshift changing rooms, which did it's job and was private enough. They had 2 smaller rooms and 1 big room for their classes. The big room is on the street side so sometimes you'll be able to hear the traffic. They could have done a better job at telling people they moved locations. They are now located on 24th st. Right when you enter into the building go to the left side doorways. Same thing of taking your shoes off, except this time they have an iPad for you to check in to. The rooms are smaller, it's divided by a wall partition so if you're in the beginner class, you'll be able to hear the 6pm advanced beginner class so it can ruin your focus. All the instructors were, besides 1 which was a substitute, good calm and hands on that helped me figure and clean up my poses. The one substitute I just didnt feel good after the class, but every other time my mind and body felt really relaxed. read more

I recently finished three teacher trainings with Sri Dharma Mittra, the 500, 800 and 1000 hour trainings. I found out about Dharma, through a local yoga master I trained with near my home, who first began practicing yoga by following Dharma's yoga poster of 1000 poses. He spoke of Dharma often with great respect as a living yoga master who is still practicing, despite his age, and in excellent health. He explained that Dharma is a yoga master because he achieved an advanced level in all the major poses, and that it is rare that someone can do all the poses. Sometimes someone can do some of the advanced poses, say in flexibility for example, but have yet to master the poses that require strength or balance. When I decided to become a yoga teacher, I knew I wanted to learn from a master. I am so grateful to have had this experience. Surprisingly, the most powerful and transformative part of the training for me was the 3 month homework assignments. At first I didn't understand the value of, say, chanting OM for 10 minutes. Even after the 1st month it wasn't clear for me. After dedicating myself in surrender to his assignments, with a willing spirit, the clarity and understanding has come. Now, after doing this and all of his homework, I have learned so much from him. Another aspect of the teacher training that I appreciated was that Dharma attracts high level students from around the world, and having the opportunity to form friendships with these yogis has been life changing for me. I feel rich in these friendship, having shared this learning experience with others who also have a deep love of yoga and commitment to their daily practice. And of course, being able to receive training and discourses directly from Dharma, in this lifetime has been the greatest treasure. I was surprised that he taught so much, from pranayama, psychic development, spiritual discourse, rigorous asana (sometimes twice a day!) and yoga Nidra. As someone who previously subscribed to the church of hot yoga as my first and only yoga experience this studio is refreshing but no less the sweat dropper. open level class is challenging but you're not pushed to the point of injury. I have attended two weeks in a row and noticed a considerable difference. The instructor did a fantastic job at keeping our 3rd on the prize. I would also highly recommend the meditation class. I have been practicing at Dharma Yoga Center for the past year and a half and love EVERYTHING about it. There were some periods of time when I didn't come in for awhile, but each time I returned, I realized how much better this studio is than any other studio I've been to. The entire place is spotless, including the restrooms. It is conveniently located less than a block from the F/M lines. Being able to register for your classes online makes life easier. The staff and instructors are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Joanne is a pleasure to speak to every time I walk in. The environment is not pretentious at all. The instructors are very supportive and challenging. The classes are not jam packed to the point of discomfort, but they have gotten progressively more crowded in the past year. Advanced beginner has variations for more and less advanced students, and intermediate is VERY challenging (specifically Jerome's 12pm class on Mondays/Fridays that is 1.5 hours long). I took one of Sri Dharma Mittra's weekend classes, and it was incredible. What an inspiring man! read more

My 800 hour TT experience was the highest level of yoga training. I use this sacred knowledge day in and out, everyday, all day with my own students. Our group was so lucky to witness Dharma going to a whole new level... taking us with him was priceless. I thought I could take it easy through the relaxation portion, but that proved hardest for me. I trained for everything else months ahead of time to the best of my ability to prepare for this training. Our group was lucky to have Yoshio as our advisor and mentor, and watching him go as far into the mental and physical exercises as Dharma does. Eating, sleeping and living yoga for myself and not teaching more than 2% of the day was a very welcome pleasure and intro into a life I will not have for a while... family major supporter. Teaching at home 90% of the day is draining. Immediately after the 800 hour training finished I wanted/needed more. I looked on Dharma's web to see if he was going to be traveling anywhere... tropical hopefully... just to give me more and something else to train for. Settling into my Thursday routine was the reality of living in CT. I could not do much more than this. Dharma's training programs are set up like moving right into the guru's ashram. Volunteer, karma yoga, new family, security of like- minded individuals and zero time or energy for anything else but the basics. Barely sleep and rest and adequate minutes to prepare your little food but lots of love and being pugged into the infinite source of yoga bliss. Home in the temple, home with our group, home with your Self is what these long days teach us to bring back home to our students. I just works for a certain serious minded sadhaka. I have been practicing and going through Life of a Yogi Teacher training at Dharma Yoga Center. I am very impressed with this place and all people working over there. It has been such a life changing experience all the way from the beginning. Dharma Yoga Center is the home of Dharma Yoga. This is the place where Sri Dharma Mittra (the father of Dharma Yoga) is teaching. This is one place you definitely want to visit at least once in a lifetime if you are serious about yoga or would like to experience what the true yoga is. The studio is on the 6th floor. So you need to take an elevator (for the most active yogis, you will not be able to take stairs going up, only walking downstairs is possibly). That elevator is pretty famous for selfie pictures in the reflection of the ceiling mirror. So when you come there, make sure you snap one picture for yourself Once you walk through the doors, the very first impression you get is that you come into someone's home and you feel like their family. Shoes must be put on the shelf near the entrance and you walk barefoot all around. But as much as I don't like walking barefoot in the public places, I did not mind doing that in Dharma Yoga Center. The entire place is so clean, it is truly spotless, including the restrooms. The studio itself looks and feels like a traditional yoga center, I would say even more of an Ashram. Colors of the studio design are very warm. The space is inviting, caring and fun. It is a true reflection of Sri Dharma Mittra's character and style. Front desk staff is nice and welcoming. Most of the time you meet with Joann. She is definitely a pleasure to deal with. And any time you have a question about Dharma yoga or their center, she surly has an answer. Classes here tend to be more advanced than in any other studios. And even taking a beginner's level can be very challenging, not mentioning the Master Class. You need to have at least some yoga practice in your background to attend any of their classes. It is definitely not must, but this way your experience will be a lot more enjoyable. Dharma Yoga Master classes, Yoga Nidra, Psychic Development, Maha Shakti and Dharma Yoga Wheel are just a few that true yogis must try. I personally love the master classes. These classes are very challenging, but they give you inside of yourself and on what is possible. Keep in mind, you will not get any fast-paced vinyasa classes here. Only classic, traditional yoga for different levels of students. Dharma Yoga Center in New York is the training center for all true yoga teachers. If you take a class over there, you might end up practicing right next to your yoga instructor. So if you are ever in Manhattan and serious about your yoga practice, you have to check this place out. You won't regret it! And just in case if you've already been there and have not had an amazing experience yet, give it a try ones again. This place is a unique experience that one cannot fully grasp with just one visit. Dharma Yoga Center needs some time for the processing and realization of the full meaning of it. I highly recommend taking the time to visit the center and going to one of Sri Dharma Mittra's classes. And if you have more time, try other instructors and classes according to the level of your yoga practice. Oh, yes. I almost forgot. Get ready! This review is for the 800hr level Life Of A Yogi teacher training program. When I heard that this program was being offered I immediately signed up, no questions asked. I knew that it would be life changing and that I NEEDED to do it. After completing the two previous LOAY (Life Of A Yogi) trainings I definitely knew how to teach a yoga class but I still wanted more, to continue to be a student. This training takes you deeper into the more refined practices of yoga, beyond just the poses and the breathing. This programs take you to a whole new spiritual and mental depth and development. Yoga is a science of the self, of self-purification and self unity. This 800hr LOAY program does just that. There is direct contact with Sri Dharma Mittra, he is present every day and he is imparting the knowledge that he received from his teacher, Yogi Gupta. This is definitely a great program for the advanced practitioner and a yogi who is looking to "go deeper" into their practice beyond the asana. There is a lot of advanced pranayama practices, yes there is the Dharma IV sequence (which isn't easy but it so fun) and a lot of meditation and mental development which is meant to fine-tune the higher consciousness. To be accepted in the program you must complete the LOAY 500hr level training so that you are steeped in the tradition. There is something very comforting and special know that this program exists and that Sri Dharma is carrying on the traditions that were given to him by his teacher. This is a direct connection to something that is beyond comprehension and almost other-worldly. This is an eye opening (both the physical eyes and the non-physical third eye) experience and I know it was a once in a lifetime chance. I cannot recommend these LOAY training programs for the yogi who is looking for yoga that goes WAY beyond the mat. This will change your life for the better if you let it. I was fortunate enough to take the 200hr Life Of A Yogi teacher training program in 2008 then the 500hr Life Of A Yogis teacher training program in 2012. My first exposure to Sri Dharma was not at this New York City Center but at the winter weekend retreat held at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. This was during a period of my life where my interest in a deeper yoga study was intensifying. Friends of mine recommended this retreat as a way to learn from a True Master of the practice. In just three days that February in Massachusetts my yoga life changed a lot, in a good way. Dharma opened the weekend with a "spiritual discourse" weaving sacred teachings of yoga with modern themes, and with a technical understanding of the wonders of life reminiscent of a Stephen Hawking book. He has the wonderful gift of relating the teachings with simplicity and with a genuine sense of humor! Dharma was the first yoga teacher who helped me see yoga as a scientific method of self-purification, not just a sequencing of "flowing" yoga poses. As for the yoga asana practice, you'd have a hard time finding someone with greater knowledge of the poses and how to instruct them, as evidenced by his famous poster (and later book), "Asanas - 608 Yoga Poses". Following that weekend I spent as much time as I could balancing my professional and personal life. I frequently joined Dharma's classes as well as those of the many other qualified teachers at the Center. Eventually, my desire to learn more from Dharma led me to enroll in the 200-hour then 500-hour teacher training programs. Yoga and Dharma Mittra changed my life a lot. *I am renewed* Just spent my Saturday night at Dharma's beautiful new West-side location. It goes without saying that being in the presence of Dharma Mittra at any time and any place is a life-changing experience. Really. Studying from a master is something that can't be explained. There were a couple differences that I noticed straight away from the East-side location: The West-Side center is much more business-like than the cozy East-side temple. The front staff doesn't exude the same warmth as before, but maybe that comes with time :) With all of that said, the space is brand new and quite impressive. I'm sure that 75+ people can fit in there easily. It is fully equipped with a waiting area, changing room, multi-stall bathroom, and plenty of space to spread out. The Dharma Yoga NY Center is a delightful oasis of yoga in a city full of hustle & bustle (& other cliches). If you are a new yogi, or you've been on the path for a while; it is inevitable that Sri Dharma Mittra will seep into your yoga consciousness. He created a poster (way before digital cameras) cataloging many yoga postures, and it is now a near ubiquitous fixture in yoga studios far and wide. I came upon Dharma by studying with a Dharma-certified teacher in Washington, DC starting in 2007. Then I took Dharma's class at a yoga conference in Boston in 2008. He and his team were so sincere and knowledgeable, I knew I would practice with him if ever I ended in NY. Fast forward to 2012. I have had the pleasure of studying at the original East Side studio, and now at the new West Side NYC Center. Dharma teaches a Master Practice at noon that will challenge all yogis, expert & novice alike. If you come to that class, know it is an "advanced" practice, so It is up to the student to respect their body and know their limitations. They offer 4 levels of courses throughout the week, in addition to the Master class, Deep Relaxation, & other special workshops. The classes are varied, and there are vinyasa-based sun salutations, as well as standing postures, back bends, floor poses, breathing exercises. I always leave class with a new tip or trick, and maybe even a new variation of a pose that I've yet to encounter in my nearly nine years of yoga. In my experience, all of the teachers aside from Dharma are also highly knowledgeable, and authentic to the classical yoga practice he upholds. If you are someone who's used to the mic-wearing, pop-music rocking, rockstar/model teacher style of gym yoga; then the Dharma center might be a calming (yet differently invigorating) change of pace for you. I came in on somewhat of a whim because I'm a long time yoga student and was in the area. Having read the phenomenal reviews, I expected a life changing experience. What I ended up with was the opposite. The front desk receptionist if you can call her that was curt and either awkward or plain rude- Completely unwelcoming and acted like I was in the wrong for asking her to show me around and inquire about their different classes i.e. Do her job. The overall culture of the studio seemed weirdly arrogant and overly pretentious about their particular school of yoga - I had to ask myself whether I were really in a yoga studio or an intolerant religious cult. In trying to be anti-corporate and "traditionalist," they seemed holier than thou. I am a woman in the early 20s and maybe I'm not the age group they're targeting, but I felt almost excluded. NOTE: the free classes aren't actually free and the one I attended was taught in a tiny room by someone who didn't seem to have much experience and didn't give much individual attention (despite there only being two other people in an hour long class). I had read all the reviews about Dharma Mittra before I went to my class, and have to say I was really excited/looking forward to an amazing yoga experience. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it at all. I took the Maha Shakti All Levels class, and am someone who has practiced for many years at a variety of studios across Brooklyn/NYC. Besides the fact the woman at the front desk wasn't that friendly (she knew it was my first time at the studio but didn't show me around) I just didn't enjoy Dharma Mittra's teaching style. I respect the fact that he's done yoga for 50 years, and maybe I was misinformed on what the class actually was. There were about 15 people in class (and the room was huge so we definitely had a lot of space) but he would talk very low and I had a hard time understanding him at points. He started off the class by saying "ok let's do some warm ups!" Then we did a bunch of seated twists, and other vigorous poses. The thing that ruined the whole class for me is the fact he rarely ever called out a posture/pose. The majority of his class was him saying "Now this is what we're gonna do. Watch me." "Look at me, move your foot here." There was rarely ever a direct cue about how to do the pose correctly, it was just "look at me, here" And I hate to say this, but the class seemed to have no flow. We did various modifications of head stands, then we'd do a wheel, and then back to head/shoulder stands. Oh, and I'm pretty sure while we were doing shoulder stand he walked out of the room for a good 20-30 breaths.... read more

I love this location, it is absolutely beautiful. Given that the East Studio was a bit small, this studio is a great change. The main difference aside from the size is that they have carpets, hardwood, and a padded floor to practice on. No matter what angle you practice you are able to see Sri Dharma. This studio is used primarily for Dharma's classes. This means all of this classes formally held on the East location are now here. In addition, Dharma has begun teaching more classes. There are a few maha Shakti classes in the evening and also a master practice class. If you need to relax he offers a deep relaxation class. Dharma is a living legend. I have been meaning to take class at his studio forever. I had a Groupon that was about to expire so last Sunday there was no time like the present. While I have not been to every yoga studio on the Island of Manhattan ( a task more easily undertaken 15 years ago) I have been to quite a few. MANY of them try to be an oasis of calm; this studio actually is. I got off the elevator and was immediately surrounded by the sound of...silence. Not dead silence but mindful silence-I temporarily forgot I was even in the city. The only snag we hit was the changeover from the class before happened and class was already in progress by a few minutes. I am familiar with the style of Dharma yoga but have not really done it before. I spent a lot of the class battling an interior monologue "Really you are going to have us do this right now?" "Am I ready for this pose?" "No one is using a blanket?" These comments are really no more than an illustration that I need more yoga. Gosh, I am a big fan of the Dharma Mittra teachers of which I have taken classes in NYC, Brooklyn, and California. However, as for DM, himself, I really wish I had 'clicked' more with him as a teacher. He led class, not sure he taught as much. While I am a experienced yogini, I still think teaching and individual verbal assists are necessary... Locale: I took a few classes at the 23rd@3rd east a long time ago.Then found 23rd West again via Brooklyn teachers. The place is very nice, and clean-ish (I am not a fan of the rugs or some of those cushions, but it is nice to be on offer for us). The front reception is fine enough. I've been to DM's Maha Sadhana here a few months ago. It was ok and well attended (on a Saturday). It just wasn't for me. I'd give it another chance if it weren't so dear in cost ($40). I went to a "master" class taught by Varuna recently and that was nice. He offered many verbal assists to various students, and when I informed of a tricky shoulder he graciously backed off. I went to the class at noon because I was in the area all morning. This class was $12. which I suppose is like a 'community' class. They offer a new student special, but I lost that oppty when I took the Maha Sadhana w/DM, which was a huge bummer for me. That would be a great way to see if this place 'fits' with you. This place is "the bomb" when it comes to all aspects of practicing and learning how to teach yoga! The spiritual leader of the center, and master teacher, is Sri Dharma Mittra. He is the most quintessential Guru and Yogi I have ever encountered. He truly exemplifies excellence in practice and selflessness in thought, word and deed. He is an inspiration and taking classes with him or listening to him speak is both an honor and a pleasure. The studio is ideally situated in the Chelsea District and the vibe and interior are beautiful and welcoming. The staff are so nice and knowledgeable. Many students of Sri Dharma and master teachers themselves, teach there as well. I was very fortunate to be able to attend many classes at the DYC in Manhattan and to also participate in their 200 hour Teacher Training Program entitled Life of a Yogi (LOAY). I believe, based on what I have seen, heard, and experienced, that DYC offers, by far, the best, most comprehensive, most deep, most spiritually and physically rewarding teacher training program in the world. If you are ever in Manhattan and love yoga, check this place out. You won't regret it! read more

This is my first time practising at the new studio and I must say it is very different from the previous one on the east side. It is harmonious and beautifully done, but the energy is definitely more commercial. There are many more items for sale as well. The way in which the staff members interact with students has changed to be business-like as well. The best thing is that Dharma himself has not changed. He is the same loving and peaceful person (legend) he always has been. I attended the Master Sadhana class which was extremely satisfying, difficult and wonderful. Dharma has a great sense of humor which he injects when instructing difficult poses, and his giggles are priceless. I look forward to returning again. read more

I have practiced for nearly 8 years at all different studios and styles. I have learned much, but not until now have I found a living Guru that teaches the true Yoga, with out ego, selflessly and with compassion. There are simply no words to describe Sri Dharma Mittra, first time I saw him in person I knew I had found my teacher. I seek no more as I have found the spiritual preceptor. The Center is an oasis of calm in the city, a true sanctuary of yoga. The fellow students are kind and inviting, and the classes always leave you feeling inspired. I especially love the lectures after the Asana practice at 8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They are an essential part of my week, I love to bring friends and family that have never done yoga. Some who might be reluctant to the Asana practice always benefit greatly from the lectures and soon feel comfortable to come to the asana practice too. I was recommended to come here by a student of Dharma Mittra, I was very excited to attend. I did not feel the Master Sadhana class was particularly great. The asana's were all over the place (seated to standing to inversion to seated for example). Additionally, much of the class was do whatever you want. Now I understand everyone doing their own thing in a Mysore class but this wasn't that vibe. I know that is the way DM runs his class - it isn't for me. The two stars is mostly for all the women i encountered who worked there were extremely rude to me and I got scolded at twice for waiting to return my blanket and walking into the wrong room. This is not the type of environment I should be subjected to in a yoga studio. read more
