Perhaps unfairly, but as an outsider, I tend to view this part of Contra Costa County as, how do I…read moreput it diplomatically...snooty. There are tract homes that are really mansions in gated communities here. You get a pretty good indication when you take the Livorna Road exit off 680 and head toward the hills. There's a convenient parking lot at the staging area, and the walk begins along a tree-laden path that leads into the Shell Ridge Trail. This is where the open rolling hills provide some challenges to the calves. You eventually make it to the most picturesque portion of the hike on the Mokelumne Coast-to-Crest Trail. This is where the residential areas disappear and you're at one with nature...except for the occasional mountain biker. Small mouth was warranted during such disturbances, but they didn't prevent me from a scenic view of Mt. Diablo (photo: https://bit.ly/3hZ96M1). Now I could've gone deeper into Mt. Diablo State Park, but hey, I'm not a rugged mountaineer. Instead I made a turn and precariously made my way downward to the Alamo Trail. I didn't realize I exited the park until I saw distracted people on the path yelling into their mobile phones as they let their dogs do their business. Hey, where's your scooper, sister? I think with more thoughtful planning, you can probably avoid the ritzy people with their ritzy homes. Maybe not. RELATED - Exploring this part of Contra Costa County? This review is for the trail starting at the livorna road staging area…read more I really liked this trail. It's a lot of up and down. The map on all trails leaves out a few mountain top options, so I went off trail a few times and followed an alternative route. This is definitely a trail that you will need your map in order to stay on. I hiked on a cloudy September day, temperature around 75 to 80°. On a hot day with direct sunlight this would be potentially unbearable.

This organization fails to improve and correct their mistakes. It's no wonder they lose at least…read more20% of participants to Pleasant Hill Baseball Association (PHBA) every single year. If it were not for being in a big city that encourages sports for children, this organization would have failed long ago. Here's why: 1. TOO SMALL: Each league has only 4-5 teams, whereas other leagues have 10+ teams (like most little league teams). Lower ages have so few teams that WCLL MAKES YOU TRAVEL TO PITTSBURG, RICHMOND, CLAYTON, ETC. Who wants to drive around to play teams from other cities far away? Especially certain cities where you worry about your car getting broken into. At other leagues, there are 10+ teams and your child gets to play with the same kids year after year (meaning they make friends and establish a community). Not at WCLL. It's horrible. 2. FIELDS SUCK: WCLL makes you play at local elementary schools where the fields are not kept nicely. There is no grounds crew to prep the fields, weeds, giant holes, etc. Other leagues have clean and well groomed fields that are separated for baseball and softball. 3. HORRIBLE COACHING: The coaching is parent volunteers, which is fine, but there is no background check, training, or anything else. They merely let any parent who signs up be a coach. Most often, the parent has no experience with coaching or even playing, and therefore cannot help your child grow. 4. NO DEVELOPMENT: The league does not work on developing your child as a player, teammate or competitor. It's merely a play date each week at all levels. 5. BOARD OF DIRECTORS: The board are a bunch of power hungry moms and dads that love to assert power with little reasoning. Honestly, I doubt any of them played any sports growing up. They do not do anything to change the league so it's a wonder why they sign up for the position anyway. 6. LACK OF COMPETITION. The league frowns on competition or showing any competitive spirit. If you try to establish competition in children, your team, etc, which is useful for adulthood, they will outcast you. Many coaches and families have left for being persecuted for this, went to another league, and thrived. WCLL literally shoots themselves in the foot by getting rid of the best coaches and families who challenge their teams and children to do better and strive to win. 7. GIRLS SOFTBALL: Some divisions have 3-4 teams, and some age levels do not even have softball (meaning they have to play with boys). Contrast that with PHBA where there are 10+ teams of only girls for softball starting at the age of 4. No joke, that's how bad WCLL is for girls. 8. BOYS BASEBALL: All the good players go to other leagues as these travel teams get stomped by every other league. If you want your kid to develop, you'll need to go to another league. If you do not believe me, go and ask around and check out other leagues on your own. I have no affiliation with anyone else, just giving my opinion so you can research leagues before you commit to this horrendously ran, unprofessional, and rag tag league.

My girlfriend and I went on a walk with her frenchie- Tinkerbell yesterday…read more I was so glad she invited me to join them. I hadn't been over to walk in Newhall since Covid. There was a nice wide trail for us to follow and Tinkerbell could sniff around without worrying about foxtails We walked by the dog park where we visited with dogs in the park thru the fence During Covid we would grab takeaway from Popeyes and have a picnic in the park- then walk it off with a stroll/ so it was I nice memory of dating my hubby during Covid/ getting back to nature

Newhall Park is a large, neighborhood park not far from where I live. It has many things to…read morerecommend it, and yet it has been ages since I've been there - maybe I'm guilty of the "grass is always greener" syndrome. But finally, my wife and I returned on the recent Sunday and were reacquainted with all it has to offer. It's a good park for walking: there's a flat, dirt path that circles the park; I didn't measure it, but it's a decent length, especially if you make multiple rounds. Along the way you see the park has a large bocce ball court, a popular dog park, and a good sized hill for cardio purposes with the Concord Vietnam Memorial on the top. A weekend adult soccer game was going on in the middle of the field. On the other side of the park is a pond (we saw an egret, ducks and geese), and a marsh-like area with tons of cattails. Galindo Creek, heavily shaded with trees, borders the edge of the park. A number of benches let you take a break when you need it from your walk. Newhall Park is a little rough around the edges visually. There's none of the graceful elegance of a Walnut Creek Larkey Park, with its paved path, lush green grass and stately trees. Newhall's grassy areas are functional, but look beat up with numerous dead spots (maybe blame the soccer). The walking path is hard dirt, but can be messy after a rain. The parking lot also is unpaved, and is in poor condition with bumps and holes. We noticed a number of cars parked along Turtle Creek Road prior to the park entrance. But these are minor concerns. In the uber-populated East Bay, any park is a welcome break from wall-to-wall homes, stores and concrete. Newhall Park is an easy way to get out and breathe the fresh air, and deserves the popularity it enjoys. That Walnut Creek park may have greener grass, but sometimes that park down the street is all we need.
