Enjoyed the selection of art work on display. At the time there was only one person on staff which was ok for a slow Thursday mid morning. Stopped in after an errand not too far and needed my morning coffee. Realized I've actually passed the spot many times and it was nice to finally pop in. First visit here and decided to get an iced spiced honey cardi-bee latte and a blueberry smoothie. The gal helping me at the counter was new and she did a nice job. I know she's still learning, but one thing I want to highlight is her customer service skills were good and she knows how to have a conversation. I didn't go much further than the counter, but looks there's some seating around the counter and I noticed a room across the hall. There were a few people there when I stopped in. The menu offered food and bakery options incase that interest you. Note, while paying I noticed a punch card and asked about that program and received my punches for that days purchase. Overall, it was pretty good experience. If I'm in the area again, I'd likely stop again. read more

Doing a thing where we eat and drink our way down Central! Stopped here on a Sunday morning after placing a takeout order on the phone. Ordered a hot chai, iced chai, deluxe breakfast burrito, and everything bagel with cream cheese. Very cool and interesting atmosphere, plenty to look at. Small indoor seating with more seating across the hall in a separate room. Outdoor tables as well. They loaded up the bagel with A LOT of cream cheese, which is how it should be done! The burrito was put in a panini press to melt the cheese and came with sour cream and salsa! They kept it simple, no fancy seasonings just pure ingredients! The chai teas were okay, not overly sweet, if you like black coffee (like I do) you'll like their chai! Not the best we've discovered in Northeast so far! Independent, creative spot (the building is fun to walk thru), retro-vintage flavor to add to your cuppa Joe and breakfast. I opted for the simple one-cup-of-coffee (Costa Rican) while my caffeine-loving buddy picked the bottomless coffee cup. I regretted my choice after a couple of sips...(note to self: order the bottomless coffee). Lots of choices here from food to drinks and seating spots. Loved the moist, delicious gluten-free sweet potato muffin. I'm not gluten intolerant, but it looked soooo good. Is there some gluten-allergic person out there missing their muffin? Sorry, not sorry. Maybe if all the gluten-free items tasted this good, there would be more available! Not a notable aesthetic, and things seemed a bit outdated. They had free Wifi. Atmosphere was 3/5. I tried the grilled cheese. It was okay, although I could make a better one at home, I'd rate it a 2/5. I didn't get a coffee, so I cannot comment on that. Service was somewhat friendly, nothing notable- 3/5. Overall, there are better cafes in the twin cities to spend an afternoon, but it wasn't a bad experience. I likely wouldn't come out of my way to visit again. Happy I got to visit this super hip little cafe for the first time! I've driven by it hundreds of times but never stopped by until today! 10/10 for aesthetics. There were so many DETAILS. Art on the wall of course, but also the lights! Ceiling lights, lights on the walls, and mismatch cool lamps on the tables! I loved how it is a little maze. So much bigger inside than I imagined! Service was meh. Speedy but not particularly friendly. note they have lavender syrup for your coffee, so I was able to get my FAV lavender soy latte. I also paired with a lemon poppy seed. Both delicious and satisfying. Fairly priced, and I will definitely be back to really soak in what's going on in there. I love the vibe of Diamonds. The space is unique in that it consists of several attached seating areas, it's adorned with local art, quirky decor, a retro theme, but also a biker theme?... Overall there's tons of character which is refreshing after being to way too many white-countered edison-lightbulbed cafes (though I kinda love those too). Order food and/or drink at the counter on the left. They prepare food from breakfast to lunch items like soup and sandwiches, plus they have a cold case of treats and local pastries. They'll put your drinks by the complimentary water when it's up without calling it out, so pay attention! I believe the owner has served me a few times, and I dig her straight-forward attitude (sometimes "MN nice" is smothering) and style. They have solid caffeinated drinks (yay iced chai latte), and their food is fresh but sometimes hit or miss. I tired their white chili, but I wasn't a fan because it was overall watery and lacked flavor, plus had random cranberries in it. But their breakfast sandwiches do the trick - esp the sausage, swiss, tomato, and egg on an English Muffin. Make it a "deluxe" to add tons of extra veggies. I'll frequent this spot for sure because I love working in their booths surrounded by cat paintings and retro lighting, plus I can walk over to Tattersall once I'm done! read more

I have driven by this place many times and I just never was drawn to stop in. I was very ecletic inside. Initially it felt very small, but it keeps going on into different rooms. The décor was one of a kind with a seat belted chair, an etch-a-sketch, couches from an old frat house (guessing) and random art on the walls. I kinda liked it! I sat inside what was rumored to be an old vault, so the walls were painted bright white, but it still got to be a bit depressing after a few hours on the computer without any natural light for me. The building is part of some other art spaces, so check them since you are already there. I did not get any coffee drink, so I cannot comment there, but the food was good. I would say a bit pricey at $8.50 for the BLT wrap, but they put a pepperjack spin on it. I did appreciate that they brought it out to me at the table. They made it right away, so no pre-frozen type meals! Also, the special of the day was a pickle bagel. While I am not a fan of pickles, I found if very creative and told some friends to go check it out. read more

This place is just meh. When you walk in, you have to navigate a front door with a three-step opening process, only to enter a space that's too warm and smells like greasy meat. That main space is the only one with natural light. You can sit in other rooms to do work, but they are dark and grimy. There's a very "punk" vibe here. Everything is kind of old and mismatched, with a slight layer of dust. I think it's part of the schtick but i wasn't a fan. The barista was a little cold and the coffee was overpriced. This is one of the earlier coffee shops in Mpls and the last time I was here was even before Yelp was a doodle on napkin in a San Fran. espresso bar next to a flip phone. There is limited parking next to the building and on the street. The front has steps to the front door which is equipt with a three step procedure on how to open and then make sure it's closed..k..ma, yeah I'll look for a jobby job t'morrow. The building is a little rough around the edges as it's probably over a century in age and hasn't been cutesy renovated. Sort of adds to the charm I thought, but I see not all agree. There is a lounge with thrift store furnishings to the right and you can pick up your brew on the left in a compact room made for barrista efficiency. Typical large wall menu, food items, all the caffeinated drinks we love to order, well I just go for the brewed dark roast and was very pleased with this two hour sipper. On exit watch the front steps on the way down and make sure the door slams shut! read more

Look, I know most everyone loves this little local spot. Other reviewers site "Cute decor!" (It's worn and dirty) "Fun vibe!" (It wasn't fun when I was there) "Local art!" (I'm here for the coffee) That's all fine. However, a coffee shop should be able to serve a good espresso beverage, right? It's a *coffee* shop. Diamonds failed at this. If you want a genuinely *good* espresso beverage, look elsewhere. Really -- even most local Dunn Bros do better, or a Caribou or a Starbucks even. Woof. I couldn't even purchase just a basic-ass coffee bc of the card minimum. Read on if you want the long story (or if you're the business owner). I stopped by on a whim while at work one afternoon bc I didn't want to stand in line at Spyhouse, and I had been wanting to try Diamonds for a while. Cool, let' I waited for quite some time for the two staffers to finish a combined effort to get some girl's iced chai right 3x (I can let a wait slide, tho acknowledgement by the staff of a customer's long wait always helps mitigate the frustration of it. None offered). ***Strike one*** I was going to get just a cup of black coffee (quick; standard baseline by which to judge a coffee shop), but their card minimum prevented me from doing that. I HATE this policy. I *get it* -- the credit card company charges you a fee blah blah blah. Either eat the fee yourselves bc it's the cost of doing business in the modern world, or pass it along to the customer $0.50 at a time. The only ppl who have cash on them anymore are people who make cash tips at their jobs. I don't want to have to spend up to reach your card minimum. So, I ordered a breve. This is an incredibly common drink. The staffer who rang me up knew what it was. The staffer on the bar did not. Cool. Everyone's new at their jobs once, and there's a learning curve. The staffer at the bar asked the staffer at the register for help figuring out what to do. "It's like a latte, except with half and half." Cool, that's correct. However, the staffer at the bar still didn't get it. The staffer at the register proceeded to treat the staffer at the bar like they were an idiot, frustratedly berating them in front of all the customers who by now had piled into the (very cramped) space by the register. It was pretty uncomfortable. ***Strike two*** THEN the staffer who had been at the register, who was now helping with my drink, *prevented* the other staffer from using the half & half out of the fridge in favor of using the half & half FROM THE CARAFE ON THE COUNTER to make my drink. They said something to the other staffer about how it was a new "waste reduction" policy. Honestly I should have stopped him and instructed them that I wanted the cold half & half, but I didn't bc I felt like I would've gotten pushback and I wasn't there for that. Waste reduction is awesome! A lot of half & half gets wasted at coffee shops when it sits out too long in a carafe. Solution: put less out in the first place, or keep it in the fridge & give the carton to customers who ask. NOT a solution: use that not-as-cold half & half in a hot breve. ***Strike three*** Once I finally received my drink, my disappointment was complete. It was bubbly, frothy, too-hot garbage. The whole experience could've at least been salvaged to the level of a second-chance return visit but the bad drink sealed the deal. Look, I was a professional barista in several different coffee shops including a Caribou (bleh), a Dunn Bros (not bad), and then a couple of respected local high-end 3rd wave shops. I *know* great coffee. I *will* tolerate coffee that's just "good" bc I don't need 3rd wave quality all the time. This wasn't even good, and then there are all of the secondary issues which need attention as well. I won't return. read more

3.5 stars, rounded up because I prefer to round up than down, and because they do their best to showcase other businesses in the building. Diamonds Coffee Shoppe has a small counter/service area and a sprawling seating area. I almost want to believe that the building management allows them to make use of the back rooms rather than leave them as part of the empty maze of corridors. If I change one thing about the coffee shop it would be the counter area. There is simply no need to have such a cramped space when there are at least three other seating areas. I realize that the staff is small, and that there is only one person to take orders and one person to make drinks, but most of the service issues mentioned in these reviews could be lessened by simply having a more pleasant waiting area. I made the mistake of walking into the shop and placing a large order. One person cooking an order of four breakfast burritos on one small hot plate = a long wait. One person taking orders and making multiple drinks as the line grows longer = grumpy customers. No seating available within sight of the food and drinks that those customers are anticipating = harsh reviews. Now that I think of it, I can also round up because my boy (fondly) remembered the breakfast burrito that he'd had the previous year. And because I remembered the wait from our first visit (we are only in Minneapolis for one weekend per year) but I still looked forward to the cup of well spiced chai that was my reward. I do wish I'd thought to order ahead and then give them a pick up time, so I'm including that suggestion here as much for me as for anyone else who reads this review. TL/DR- order ahead for pick up. This coffee shop has some of the worst customer service I've ever seen. The cashier was brusque and unkind both times I went to order something. I doubt anyone would appreciate having their receipt thrusted towards them, and having their debit card slammed down on the counter instead of being handed to them. I ordered a chai which was subpar at best, and later ordered a grilled cheese which was fine. It's a shame to see the lack in customer service training and that this sort of treatment is acceptable. I would recommend dropping by Dogwood coffee instead -- it's pricier, but you're treated like you're wanted there. read more

The atmosphere is cool, kind of reclaimed-industrial funky, with tables in several different rooms. The dark roast coffee I had was very good. But I was looking for a breakfast place (their sign outside) says "GOOD FOOD," and here is where they were disappointing. The deluxe breakfast burrito took a very long time to arrive (almost 25 minutes) and was pretty small for the price, though I will say it was tasty. Our experience here was very underwhelming and quite sad to see. We ordered two coffees and two breakfast items. The baristas forgot to make one of our coffees and then the food took over 40 minutes to make. Thankfully once our food was made they gave it to someone who had just come in and ordered the same thing. The quality of the food was very poor. I would not recommend getting any food from there. Start to finish it took them an hour to get our food and drinks. We just do not understand why their restaurant was operated so poorly. We will never be returning. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to come to Diamonds on a Saturday around noon and find an open table with a handy outlet nearby. Although other patrons' lunch looks pretty good, I only came for coffee. The mocha is chocolatey and decently priced. Service was good. It's a nice place to quietly work at a table. There's plenty of parking and I'm glad they redid that awful parking lot. Usually I stop by spyhouse down the street but I may skip it now to avoid the crowd and to have a table to sit at. read more

Diamonds is bigger than I first thought. Much. It's like a fun house, where you behind every door is another door and more rooms of people on their laptops. I've been here once for a meeting last summer where we sat outside on the loud sidewalk and another time last month when I was in the neighborhood and stopped in to get some work done for an hour or two. After the second visit, I realized that Diamonds just isn't my cup of joe. My two main reasons for coffee shop-hopping are 1. the actual coffee and 2. escaping my home office. Diamonds didn't particularly impress me in either sense. The service and coffee was good (not great). The atmosphere is not particularly homey or charming, in my opinion. On the bright side, from the looks of their bulletin boards, it seems like they are involved in the neighborhood and support community activities, which I think is awesome. Diamonds was a'ight (maybe somewhere between two and three stars?), but I probably won't go out of my way to hang out here again. read more

After an afternoon exploring the Art-a-Whirl in NE, my friend and I were feeling rather famished. We stumbled into Diamond with high hopes after reading a few Yelp reviews. Boy were we disappointed. Firstly the woman behind the counter was at best unpleasant, talking down to me as I asked if the boca burgers were vegan (some have eggs). The rest of my transaction seemed only to annoy her further. Once I received my food I was even more let down. The wrap (boca burger cut up with veggies and avocado) was poorly made and even poorly priced, it also had the faint taste of nail polish remover which my friend corroborated was also in his sandwich. Both meals were overpriced for being "a big bucket of fine", as my friend said. We were not the only customers dissatisfied with our orders. The woman sitting behind us ordered a smoothie (which at this place amounts to ice and 'smoothie mix'). Upon receiving it she exclaimed "this tastes like paper mache", and went to get a lemonade which she then stated tasted like "taco bell mild sauce and lemons" both of which statements were agreed upon by others sitting at her table. Short of all other eateries simultaneously closing down, I will never eat here again. I have never been so let down. read more

I went here on Sunday, grabbing some food with Kristi prior to hitting some places within Art-A-Whirl. We like to support the small places, the hard working places, the small businesses that are taking on the large entities... so we didn't think twice about going into Diamonds. But we definitely should have. While I have not been here prior, I do have to think they don't get all that busy. Small place, four tables, and there isn't a whole lot around to provide a daily "lunch crowd" for them during the work week. So needless to say I was happy to see people in there, supporting them -- traffic from Art-A-Whirl. Kristi saw their daily soups were vegetable beef, and chili, which looked to be her only options for food there, being gluten free. She asked if any gluten was in the vegetable beef. The guy at the counter didn't know, so he defaulted to the manager, or owner, or both. She responded, "well it is barley". Okay thanks, but lose the attitude, you don't mention "barley" at all within the "vegetable beef" mention on your 'daily specials' board. Skip the vegetable beef. We asked what was in the chili, and was told it was "canned, to be honest". Okay lady, you know we just asked about gluten contents, so can you elaborate some more? Is there any gluten in the chili? Can you bring a can out now that the entire place knows the chili is canned? Didn't look like we were going to get anything more that that, so Kristi ordered the chili anyway. If you're in the service industry, a little "service" wouldn't hurt. Also, be a little thankful that at this time, in a shaky economy, you're busy at all. Be thankful Art-A-Whirl is providing an increase in your traffic. Be happy you are making money. We decided to stop in there and spend money, please act like you appreciate it, if only just a little. It's like an adventure game. So much seating. So many rooms. I ordered a turtle mocha. So sweet and yummy. I love the service and I love the personalities of the people that work here. The guy who took my order and made my coffee called me "dude" and would look at me and nod his head once. This is exactly how I want to be treated all the time. Some people who reviewed this place expected more from the service. I do not. This place has a very specific theme and a personality that **they created. I deal with it. I roll with it. And, the service people reflected this uniqueness perfectly. They fit. Some people who reviewed this place love order and structure and for all the seats to be the same and for everything to have its place. This place is obviously not for you. Please change your rating. Pros: there's almost always space and if you don't want to be stuck next to the guy who's talking to himself in the corner you have options. Cons: $5 minimum on credit card purchases, and the staff isn't always receptive when you walk up to the counter. They do eventually get to you sooner or later, but Starbucks this is not. Sometimes the music feels a bit much. I love that there's so much parking in the back, the wide selection of food, and the general quiet that comes with this much space. Diamonds is located in a building housing many artist studios, from the outside you'd think it'd be a machine shop but when you walk around the building it seems to never end. On summer weekends you'll often see cool vintage motorcycles parked out front which is a welcome site when you're miserably trying to recoup from last night. The coffee is good but the wait staff will always give you lip. I've almost made a game out guessing which tiny question will get sass in return. I once ordered a turtle mocha and requested a hint of mint and was returned with "Why would you want that, its going to taste horrible" "Because I want some mint, dont judge me" "It's going to be awful you cant return it" *sip* "Mmmmmmmmm" "Ughhhh *rolleyes*" Life is impossibly hard for her and you have no clue what real pain is. edit: On a recent trip the girl was very kind and helpful which is great too. read more

They also have lots of vegetarian food options, which is always a plus. Clientele is mostly locals/regulars making it a great place to have a quick chat about community news & gossip! Dropped my bicycle off at Recovery Bike Shop* and have at least a few hours before it will be finished so I walk a few blocks south and I attempt to have another good outing at Diamonds. I had only made one previous trip to Diamonds and it was short lived. During Art a Whirl I walked in to get coffee, and then sat outside waiting for my friends. I would have loved to see their share of the building back when it's original tenants were still in it. The room I'm sitting in has cat paintings on every wall. Every room is brick and there is a creepy door behind me that looks like a water tight door form the Titanic! Four... maybe 6 different locking pins? Am I sitting in what used to be a gas chamber?! The service: I see a lot of people talking about poor and just weird service here. It is called individuality. If you want to be served coffee by a robot, go to Starbucks! If I was rich I would buy more of the food on the menu. They were just a little high. So I got the chips and salsa. I asked the girl taking my order where they got their salsa, and was pleased to hear they make it in house. I was not as pleased when I tasted it. It is not the worst I have had, but it tastes like all the ingredients (of which there are many) just mix to make it all taste like a funny tasting green pepper. So in my opinion they could work on the salsa or maybe it's just a bad day for salsa? Also, I don't think an air freshener would hurt your business. *See my review on Brent's bike shop. Coffee, atmosphere and service would have been 4 stars. Food brought it down to a 3, sorry. Lattes were pretty solid, free wireless is always nice, cool decorations. Nice and quiet for studying when I was there but they seem to have all sorts of fun activities like pancakes breakfasts which I would def go to if I was ever not studying! The not-so-good: I had the greek salad and it tasted like it was right out of a bag. Should have listened to other posters about the food! Another aside - they have this "art" all over. One of them is a bunch of wires sticking out from underneath a chair, essentially "art" making it look like a bomb. Maybe I'm just too sensitive but I thought it was in really poor taste. We met a friend here for coffee and chat time, and we sat in the little room across the hall from the counter. It was good to see our friend, and the coffee was, well, coffee. I think the things that left me feeling a little less that happy with the overall experience from the business perspective were fixable issues: the room, seats, wall fixtures, and lighting were all dusty and on the dirty side of comfortable. While it was chilly outside, it was so cold where we were sitting that we had our coats on the entire time.
