I was…read moreflabbergasted at the $25 ticket price; I've never attended a choral performance where tickets were that expensive, particularly when one can attend free performances by the New England Conservatory at Jordan Hall. Additionally, up to the day of the performance, the "buy tickets" link on the Brookline Chorus site was surreptitiously hidden, giving the impression the concert was free (until we arrived and saw ticket prices tacked to a sign outside the church). Anyway, rip-off pricing aside, the concert was a collection of traditional madrigals with some contemporary pieces thrown in. It was a rather dull selection, with little variation or energy, and there was an irritating amount of unnecessary narration between songs. Nonetheless, there were some amazing voices amongst the group, and the members are undoubtedly very talented. I only wish they'd had a better repertoire for this concert.

"You can dance, you can jive Having the time of your life…read moreOoh, see that girl, watch that scene Diggin' the dancing queen" (Abba) Having raised two boys, we were never exposed to the world of girls' dance recitals until one of our boys grew to have a family of his own. That allowed us to enter the dance recital universe to see our granddaughter on stage and witness her excitement over being a part of Momentum's world. It's quite an impressive world encompassing little 4-year-old munchkins that toddle around the stage on up to Senior Girls who dance and jump around like the Rockettes. At yesterday's 4th Annual Dance Recital at Natick High School, we saw (predominantly, but not entirely) girls in that age range take the stage to perform jazz, ballet, hip-hop, tumbling, interpretive, lyrical, Acro, and tap routines. The groups ran the gamut from open classes through competitive performance based elite teams. Momentum's organization of this massive event involving hundreds of performers, hours of logistics, scripting out power-point slides and music for each routine, moving in gym mats and props, and enough routines and staff to take up a 73-page program was very impressive. I really enjoyed watching the teeny-tiny little girls doing their routines. Talk about sweet cuteness overload! Some of them danced, some swayed from side to side, and some just stood there stock still. There was an instructor in the wings of the stage doing the routines for them to look at, sort of like a human teleprompter showing motions instead of words. The looks of utter joy and pride on their faces were lovely to behold. We thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Momentum gave me back my love for dance and grew my passion. I hesitated to switch studios about…read moretwo years ago because I wasn't sure if I wanted to change things, but I'm so glad I did. The coaching is excellent, and you can see that all the teachers genuinely want to be there and are passionate about dance and teaching. They are also very good at allowing dancers to express themselves and their feelings. The studio brings in a variety of choreographers and tries different styles to keep us well-rounded as dancers and open-minded about dance. I appreciate how we have open conversations as a team to address any issues and maintain a family vibe. I also feel like they really listen to us, and if something isn't working, we try something else. Overall, I highly recommend the studio; it has truly changed my life for the better.

So as a former professional breakdancer (yes I'm serious) from another time, waaay before the…read morerevival of b-boy breakin or modernized x-treme breakin, I thought I'd closed the book on that part of my life a long time ago....... .... then, flash forward, I had kids.... So 2 of these kids decided they wanted to learn how to dance hip-hop and jazz, and I heard about City Lights through the family consigliere (i.e. 'wifeypoo'). At first, I was really skeptical about learning hip-hop dance in a studio (I got my background from the streets and underground clubs), and when I first walked into the place and saw an older gentleman that I figured to be somebody's grampa or a live-in security guard, I figured I'd give it maybe 5 minutes before turning around and heading home. Boy.... talk about completely missing the mark and wrongly judging a book by its cover. The guy I saw as I walked in was Duggin Hill, a long-time professional dancer/actor/instructor that had the moves of an 18 year old pro. City Lights is his non-profit dance studio for inner-city kids and teens, and I gotta tell ya...... this goes far into the realm of rhythm, stretching, warm-up, team work, and........ Discipline. Duggin was like a drill sergeant for BOTH kids and parents. That's right, the price of free instruction is parents have to participate in everything. Stretches, jumping jacks, poses, plies, spins, steps.....EVERYTHING. We weren't even past the halfway mark when my body started shaking in the weirdest places, and I thought a kidney was going to dislodge and pop out of my ass. It was the best experience I've had in a long time, and a helluva great time for the kids. Duggin was awesome, focused, dedicated, and never missed a beat. Oh, and parents, park your 'parent' attitude at the door. Duggin runs the whole thing and requires everyone to listen to HIM. Loved it, and am really looking forward to my Saturday mornings..... for the rest of my life.... :)

I hired 4 lyrical dancers from Urbanity Dance to perform freestyle solos as part of a surprise…read moreflash mob proposal for my partner, and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. The dancers were super professional, dressed elegantly, and really breathed life into the song that the orchestra (hired from a separate company) played. I paid a flat rate per dancer, which included the performance and 50 minutes of rehearsal time before the proposal to give the dancers a chance to rehearse with the orchestra since they had not worked together before; Urbanity Dance was worth every penny and then some! The final performance was exactly what I had envisioned, and I especially appreciated that the dancer who performed last (Joy) finished her solo with a "lyrical invitation" for my partner and I to follow her to the predetermined proposal spot - this aligned perfectly with the music as it was fading out, and allowed for perfect photography/videography coverage - plus the two of us were in such a daze as everything was happening that we definitely needed the clear guidance Joy provided.
