Came in today for hockey (dek and ice equipmnet) for my 10 y/o son. we were lucky to work with Austin who took hia time educating us as well as showing all the options and answering our many questions. He even suggested sneakers for better ankle support which wasn't something on my radar. He was friendly and included my son in whole process. This place is a joke. I was directed by one of the 4 people who did not greet me when I walked. I was told just go upstairs there are right there. I saw some employs walking around and one man directed me to a section and then walked away. The coat section has mens and women's mixed together. This place sucks!!!!!!!!!!! Don't bother coming here. Here's my story: I decided to come and get a paddleboard and a kayak here for their big sail. Meanwhile I reserved it on a Monday and picked it up on a Saturday. NO JOKE. I spent my whole day off here roaming for employees to help me put a kayak and a paddleboard on my cars roof. When they finally did help me they put it in the middle of my minivan and now I can't see to my right. If I couldn't get out of the parking lot I wouldn't be able to get home. So I go back. I came here looking for a gift for my father and aimlessly wandered the building because no one bothered to ask me if I needed help. Eventually I interrupted two employees' conversation to find what I needed. At time of checkout, the line was pretty lengthy, and they only had two registers open. For such a large store with a good amount of traffic, I'm surprised their staff isn't larger or at least better managed. I find Dick's to be just a step above Sports Authority...although your still dealing with very generic sporting equipment. Apparel selection is better, and with two floors to work with they seem to have large specialty departments, camping, golf, etc. We were in the store looking for soccer cleats for my young daughter, sitting in one are for no less than 30 minutes, trying on different cleats. Not one sale person came over to ask if we needed any help. Granted, we didn't the help. But just an idea of the type of service you may get if you stop into this particular store. And it was not a particularly busy day. We found what we were looking for (moderately price soccer cleats) and picked up a couple pairs of flip-flops that were on sale (impulse buy). I would definitely recommend this store over the Sports Authority, just because they have more variety of product to choose from. read more

I really like this store. Some people complain that they are overpriced, but they price match. So go shopping, find what you like, and then do a quick Google search on your phone. If you find a better price, they'll give it to you. A lot of stores advertise price matching but when it comes down to it they make it a big hassle or create some reason why the item you want is an exclusion. I've never had that problem here. The staff is always friendly, the store is well stocked, and if you sign up for their rewards program, you get a $10 certificate for every $300 you spend. They also send you coupons in the mail and emails regarding their flash sales. I've gotten a lot of great deals at Dick's both in the brick and mortar and online. They stock the brands we love and they are one of the few stores where when we shop we actually have fun! You can also find what you want online and then check its availability before driving to the store. This is a big time saver. We bought a fishing rod here over the Summer and we were able to apply for and acquire fishing permits the same day. I didn't realize you needed a fishing permit to go fishing off the beach. But, their staff knew and hooked us up:) We are big fans of North Face and Patagonia. Dick's is one of the few stores I know of that carries both brands and doesn't exclude them from their promos/coupons. What can I say? I love Dick's. Yes. Went on a Sunday evening and didn't realize they closed early... I barely got up to the door to try and read the hours sign when a worker unlocked it to let other workers out and said, "See you tomorrow." It was so shockingly rude that my boyfriend didn't catch it, and began asking if they were closed. "See you tomorrow" repeated the worker, rudely. We couldn't even tell if he was being rude right to us, or completely ignoring us and saying it to the other workers. I mean really, have some dignity and a better work ethic. It wouldn't hurt you to say, "Sorry, we're closed, but we open tomorrow from 10-10 (or whatever)" We went to Sports Authority and got what we needed for a good price, and with the help of a friendly staff. As a soccer mom, the struggle to find the right cleats several times a year for my ever growing teenager (turf or grass or futsal, depending on the season) is much harder than I ever imagined! Especially with no "soccer stores " in Suffolk county. But much to my surprise, the shoe department at Dick's at the Smith Haven Mall is staffed by a knowledgeable young man, who was both helpful and understanding of my sons desire to have the "latest model" of cleats (who knew the kids paid attention to that sort of thing). He was able to accurately measure my sons foot, then he had a handheld device that tells him immediately if they have his size in stock. Went their to buy shoes, as I was looking at the displays and touching them to see which one I liked, one of the workers came up to me and ripped the shoe out of my hand and told me that I wasn't allowed to touch or wear the shoes on display. She was very nasty. But this was weird because another worker had brought me a pair of shoes from the back room for me to try on, but he said the only other pair they had was the one on display. So he told me to wear the right shoe in the box and the left shoe from the one on display. Don't bother getting skates sharpened here. I am new to skating and had new skates in the car as I passed Dicks, figured I'd get them sharpened. Big mistake. The guy had no idea what he was doing and couldn't figure the machine out. Another fellow came over and said figure skates are done by hand. Off to the back they went and "sharpened" them. I went out on the ice and almost hurt myself as my skates slipped out sideways underneath me. Took them to the store at the rink and was told they were flat. Twice I have made the mistake of trying to buy something from these idiots, well... never again. This time I was made to wait fifteen minutes in the gun section only to ask for a caliber of ammo that I was told, in an abrupt, terse manner, they didn't have, and while offering no additional information. Maybe something like "we'll be getting more in next week" or "let me check if we have some in another store" or some other courteous response you might normally use in dealing with a customer if you ever want them to return to your store again, would have been appreciated. Instead I get "no - we don't have any" and then a blank stare. And it's too bad for these jerks because while I was waiting I thought to myself that if they didn't have the caliber I needed in stock I would buy a new, different caliber ($1000) rifle along with ammo/accessories, which I had been thinking about anyway. Nice big organized sporting goods store. My problem, prices! There are no sales or promotions at Dick's. Customer service is great but prices here just don't appeal to me. The apparel, exercise equipment, etc is just out of my price range. The one area I do like to check out is their baseball equipment. First off, this is with the Dicks company and not so much an individual store. I Bought a fitbit online, because I am physically handicapped, and unable to stand long time in line. They had a promotion of $25 dicks cash to be sent by email on Dec.28th, to be used between Dec.25th to Jan.7th( I know how can you use it before the 28th when they send it??) Anyway the 29th comes and I don't get code, so I write customer service. I never get an answer back, but do get an email from dicks with the $25 code a day late, but ok. I then goto store to use it, and guess what,its no good expired!!! How can that be? I just got it in email 6 hours before going to store. I waited on a line which is not easy for me to do, and winded up paying for item, being that the code they sent is no good. This is the 3rd time in 2 months that dicks has screwed me, with points, never getting coupons, flat out lying to me, and yet people still deal with them. I buy most of my clothing here. Under armour is my brand of choice, nice selection and recently took advantage of summer clearance racks there. Lots of nice shorts for the gym, mets, knicks, islanders and giants merchandise at tremendous discounts. I was even lucky enough (before the controversy) to see a kaepernick jersey, originally $100, marked down to $20, couldn't pass it up though not a,49er fan. Also islanders jerseys at same price.
