They had a jumbo for basically $30 to me the breading was a little too thick and too salty, but what would make me not go there again? NO!!!! I grew up in Mt. Greenwood and have loved DiCola's as did my dad. Their fried shrimp is delicious!!!! I don't understand the odd bad reviews. Don't let them deter you as it almost did me. Low quality over breaded fish and seafood. Possibly previously frozen. When weighing the food prior to cooking the food is always overweighted in the stores favor. Whatever your order is they will increase the weight in favor of the store. They will always ask is that ok? But it will never be below the weight you requested. I went to DeCola's for fried shrimp, but the shrimp was so heavily salted it was inedible. I returned the next day and spoke with the owner, who acknowledged there had been an issue with a vendor supplying the battered shrimp. He mentioned it had been a while since any complaints, but agreed to replace my order this time. However, he also stated that if I received another overly salted order, it wouldn't be replaced. I told him I wouldn't return again if that happened. Unfortunately, the replacement shrimp I was given was either undercooked or still not properly handled, and I had to throw it away. A new owner. He was terrible to me in the experience that I had with him! He totally embarrassed me in front of all the other customers by saying out loud that I can't afford his king crab legs. I could definitely afford them but being frugal in his store was something that he took offense to. I had gone to DiCola's since the 80's! But never had I'd been so embarrassed in any store for that matter before! I live in the far West suburbs and traveled a great distance particularly for the king crab legs to make my gumbo and jambalaya for my pops! One good thing in the bad experience that I had was that one of the workers behind the serving counter had seen and heard the owner embarrassing me. This is utterly disrespectful and racist especially when you have no idea who you're speaking with. Things have definitely changed since they first opened. The seafood is still good but the service I received was totally unacceptable for my taste. After I placed my order to have it cooked there, I walked over to pay. The man that was on the cash register was talking to the customer in front of me. The cashier never stopped his personal story as I waited to pay. He never acknowledged me waiting. When he was finished talking, he rang me up. Before the transaction was finished, he walked away while saying my receipt was printing. That meant I had to tear it out of the machine myself. He never said thank you - nor did he ever make eye contact with me. What kind of service is this?!?!?! I live in the neighborhood but will NEVER walk thru those doors again! On Dec 24 Christmas Eve , I bought 2.5 lbs of raw 12-24 count shrimp, hearty price ,but it was for Christmas Eve dinner . I came home made my Shrimp dish , and each of the 6 guests complained about the iodine taste. I can't tell you how disappointing this was . DiCola's Seafood is a very good restaurant to purchase freshly cooked seafood. I visit this business on a regular basis, and they have consistently made my food well. I typically order 2 pounds of Jumbo Shrimp and 2 fries whenever I visit. The batter on the shrimp is not overly breaded, and it is very good. The restaurant is very small, retro, and outdated. There are no tables, and this is not a dine in restaurant. They have a few chairs by the door so that patrons can wait for their fish to be freshly dropped and cooked. The store is rarely crowed, so the wait time is good. There is a large parking lot and not much traffic in the area. The customer service is average. The young, Black man working behind the counter is always pleasant and friendly. DiCola's Seafood sells a variety of food such as fish, Shrimp, frog legs, and sides like fries, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, rice, potatoes salads, and Pasta dishes. The food is dropped and freshly cooked right in front of you. The food is sold by the pound, and they servings are plentiful. I can honestly say that I would avoid purchasing the side dishes. They do not look fresh in my opinion. One time I ate some fried rice, and I became extremely sick right after. The price of this restaurant is average to high average depending on what you order. Two orders of 1-pound shrimp, fries, and sauce will cost around 45 dollars. You do have to purchase Shrimp and Tartar Sauce on the side. Today, I went to Dicolas and purchased some catfish nuggets, calamari and shrimp. I noticed the nuggets had a fishy strong taste. I took it back and and explained the taste. The manager told me that's just how catfish nuggets are and next time he won't give me a refund (of which I didn't ask for) I just thought they would've maybe chose another nugget and just fried it again to make it right. I buy them all the time so I know how they taste. He proceeded to tell me next time get filets because that's not the fish for me. I told him nuggets are my favorite. He says again you can't buy those and no more refunds, as if I had done this before. As much money as I've spent there over the years it was very sad to hear a manager take this behavior over 2 small nuggets. I gone here for the last 30 years and have never experienced the nuggets this way. His tone and behavior was very nasty and rude. DiCola's has been at this spot in Beverly on the south side of Chicago for decades and you can quickly see why. If you are a fish lover, you'll want to try this place out. It is much like Lawrence's at Canal and Cermak near downtown Chicago, and Calumet Fisheries on the East side of Chicago at 95th Street on the river. DiCola's is the Beverly version of these neat places. The deal here is fresh fish and seafood. You walk in and there is a line of coolers with a selection of fresh and lightly breaded fish and seafood. You pick out what you want and how much you want, and they either wrap it up for you to take home and cook or they take it over and French fry it right there - your choice. We had our selections fried right there and then we went out in the parking lot and had a feast ... why wait? They fry your selections to a certain time, but you can ask to have it fried lightly if you don't like it too well done. We had a pound of shrimp, a filet of catfish, and some lake perch. The shrimp was 5 star stuff and the hit of the night (crisp on the outside and fresh tasting on the inside and perfectly cleaned throughout). The catfish filet was only 3 star ok (probably perfectly reasonable but much too fishy tasting). The perch was more five star stuff (could not have been fresher). And for all, the breading was nice and light - this is not beer batter stuff with a thick coating, just a thin breading. We also had some French fries and onion rings that are also done to your order ... good stuff. Inside the store they also have a ready-to-go cooler of foods that are already prepared - like salads and the like. We stayed away from this stuff. While we don't usually have a problem with already prepared, we couldn't be sure how long the food had sat in the cooler. But we could see without a doubt how fresh the fish and seafood was, so we'd recommend you stick with that. They also have a lot of sauces and the like that they sell by the bottle. Good stuff, and feel free to try that stuff. But our five stars are for the freshly fried fish and seafood - unbeatable. Service was very nice. Idk why I haven't reviewed DiCola's up until but nonetheless...this is one of two establishments which are the only ones I'd vouch for as far as fried shrimp in Chicago are concerned. Very subtle seasoning included in the breading however what's set this place & literally 1 other apart is the fact that the accompanying cocktail sauce is downright divine. Let's be honest, most fried shrimp is a dime a dozen however where most places fail me is their cocktail sauce. You order at a deli like counter & you have the option to have shrimp amongst many other options fried for you. Like most people I have no idea why they charge you for said cocktail sauce but it's literally $1 for a huge amount or like 50 cents for the small. Having always been a loyal patron of Lawrence's Fisheries, I was referred to Dicola's by friends. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, shockingly I had never heard of this place. I almost always call in my orders. Got a tad concerned when advised my order wouldn't be dropped till I arrived. Nothing to worry about. Service was still fast. I enjoyed jumbo shrimp. I have been a customer of Dicolas for decades. I purchased some scallops that were really sandy and had a hard tiny pebbles in them. I called the next day to let the manager know and he told me to "stay away from the scallops next time" In addition, he said " did you buy 3 or 4 ?" I said no j bought 20, I spent almost $40 on scallops. My point is that the lack of customer service is horrible. I didn't want a refund just attempt to fix the issue or even apologize. My sister and I used to go Dicola's in the mid 70's. This use to be the best sea food restaurant, on the south side of Chicago. Whenever, we were near Dicolas we had to stop and grab a bite. Needless to say it was Excellent each time. Omg!!! What happened!!!! 40 plus years you go from a 5 star restaurant to a 1 star restaurant. We ordered jumbo shrimp and they were horrible. They were too salty to eat. I called Dicola's immediately to complain. I spoke to the Manager, Rocky, and his response was they don't salt on their food. And maybe he could compensate us, bring the orders back, or the next time we stopped by they could give us a slice of cheesecake. REALLY!!!! My response....NO THANK YOU. I called this business, ahead of time to ask if they had fresh scallops, the manager said "Sure, that's what we are famous for." I get there and there is a small platter of scallops that definitely were not fresh. I traveled a long distance so I purchased them anyway, the cashier who I believe was the manger was very rude. He did not greet me or say thank you, or anything in between. He just took my money and turned his back without saying thank you, as if he did me a favor. On top of all of that, the scallops were 23 dollars a pound, previously frozen, (I don't know how many times) and full of sand. I will never patronize this place again. Don't waste your money, go to Mariano's, it's fresher and cheaper, and they are friendlier, and they know how to acknowledge a person, and say "THANK YOU" to a customer. Let's start with the service, there's 4 different areas of service. The raw food section the person had a pleasant spirit. The cooked food section the person had a nice spirit. The cashier he was shaddy, I ordered some hot food and some shrimp uncooked and he tried to put everything in the same bag . The person who's doing the frying she had a bad spirit. I enjoy DiCola's food each and every time I visit, however it's pricey and the breading on the fish always comes off. Place's like this are few and far between ( fresh seafood cooked to order), so along with DiColas, I visit place's at 71 and state ( fresh seafood, no cooking) and in roseland 103 Michigan.
