I have very fond memories of this hotel, but it's currently been closed since March 2020 and that is not reflected on booking websites- so I am writing this review as a PSA! Do not book through their website or another like hotels.com without first calling the hotel's phone number at (830) 997-3330 and confirming with someone they are back open and accepting reservations! What an awful experience it would be to arrive and find you have no place to stay! As I said, we have lovely memories of coming here. My husband and I first visited in the summer of 2002 and last visited in the winter of 2010. We stayed there a few times and our families stayed there once while we were planning our wedding in the area. It's an extremely reasonable price, just on the outskirts of town so you can avoid a lot of tourist traffic and still get around, clean, quaint and best of all, they are pet friendly! It's the best way to keep cost of a visit to the area down, while still staying in a safe and clean area. However, I have to dock a star (would've been 2 but I decided on 1 in case it was out of managements control due to health issues) because of the poor communication that is affecting others. We were in Fredericksburg for our anniversary at the end of August 2020. We were driving around, nostalgically stopping at places we used to visit and pulled in here. The place reflects they've been closed for months, especially with the covered pool and the gazebo that needs a power washing. It was sad to see, but not as sad as going to google to find out if it was a permanent or temporary closure and finding that there were several reviews of people booking rooms and showing up to a closed location! Unacceptable! Your website should reflect the closure on the first page and hopefully an ETA for reopening, but at least a message about the closure- those poor would be guests! I genuinely hope they reopen again in the future and if they do, they are worth a visit because Fredericksburg has continued to increase prices at all other accommodations, including RV parks, restaurants and shops and this is really the best way to reduce the cost of your trip. read more

Our usual hotel Fredericksburg inn and suites was booked and we were stuck staying here. Very nice front desk guy but place was pretty poor quality. Think very old cheap motel but priced over $100 a night. . Shower seemed dark and old. Room worn and tired. Bed was too soft but at least not lumpy. But did have the typical nylon bedspread that makes you feel it's never been washed. Goathead weeds everywhere outside. Did think it was kind of funny front desk wanted a credit card on file for amenities. What amenities?! I would wish they could do a major room renovation and fix up grounds and it would be worth it. I am giving this place 1 star for resolving a dispute with my Credit Card company after I chose for safety reasons not to stay after I saw the property and the room. Also, the key did not lock the door, so when you left, you had to lock the door from the inside since it was an actual key. I want to advise others to manage expectations. I arrived in the dark, and I just did not feel safe. There is no front desk person overnight. In a hospitality-centered town like Fredericksburg, that is unacceptable. There is an option to call the sister property, and, in some cases, you may need to go there to check in and pick up your keys if you are delayed in your arrival after a certain time. My advice is if you are looking for a chill hotel with a well-lit pool and will be here during the day, this may be your place. If you just need a comfortable place to sleep where you feel safe there are other options at similar price points in the area. I hope that the hotel makes some investments in changing light bulbs and ensuring that rooms are locked when not in use and thank you for refunding my money. read more

Clean, roomy, unique, and accommodating! My parents recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Fbg and with several out of town guests we recommended the Dietzel. I was so pleased with the accommodations and our group, which took up about 1/2 of the 20 rooms at the little motel, all enjoyed their stay. The rooms were spotless with plenty of space to move around and some pretty cool drawers that were embedded in the wall. All of the basics were there including hairdryer. Our room had a small table and two chairs with vanity, nice size bathroom, and convenient luggage racks provided. Some rooms also had a small couch. Not to be confused with the Ritz this place has been here a while and utilizes window units. And not to be confused with the Ritz the owner was onsite, hands on, and friendly! She was very accommodating to our group, not only permitting us to have a get together on the spacious lawn, but going out of her way to move a picnic table and chairs over and turn on the gazebo lights in the evening. The location is perfect. Just on the edge of Main Street it is walking distance to town, and has plenty of onsite parking in front of each room. For a motel it is a bit pricy at around $90 on the weekend we were there. However taking into consideration the price of accommodations in Fredericksburg this is what I believe to be the best deal in town and I would highly recommend it to any traveler. read more

This was a very quaint, clean and roomy cottage. If you only had 1 in your party perfect. 2 depends on the people just be aware that it only has a double bed. This room also has a refrigerator and microwave ,only a shower no bathtub. Great WiFi ,I'd definitely come back. In case I forgot to mention they also have a pool outside. When trying to understand my booking, property Manager, Lynn was rude, unprofessional and argumentative on the telephone. I asked to file a complaint. She told me the corporate office would contact me. The Hotel then dishonored my booking. Instead of holding their rude, impatient employee accountable for her terrible customer service, they instead dishonored my booking and refused my business. Very unprofessional hotel to deal with. Okay...it's not a 5 star stay, BUT they're clean, well priced & totally comfortable! We rolled thru & got a room on short notice on August 18th & had a great stay. I have been travelling to Fredricksburg for many years and have seen this motel and thought how nicely the grounds were maintained. We decided this year to take a last minute trip during bluebonnet season and our usual places were not available. We found a room at the Dietzel and I was impressed. Extremely clean and retro chic. The owners live on site and stayed open for our 10:30 arrival. Such a nice hometown feel to the place. It is a refreshing change from the overpriced motel/hotel chains. read more

We had the opportunity to stay here over a long weekend. We had a large group (11) so we were spread out in several rooms across the property. The rooms are quaint and very clean, and the lady at the front desk was awesome. Extra blankets and pillows were no problem, and the beds were great. We were invited into the lobby to play cards one evening when the weather was too cold to enjoy outside. It's within walking distance of a wonderful German restaurant. Overall it was a great time. This is probably one of the most affordable options in Fredericksburg, if you're on a budget and want to visit. You get what you pay for. Nothing luxurious about the place. But simple & CLEAN. We have stayed here every trip to Fredericksburg, but this is the last time. My grandfather in law's bed frame was broke and held up by a gallon paint can. There were food crumbs on the floor, and dead bugs on the window seals. The room conditions were poor. No one cleaned our room or brought new towels. However the management and office staff were helpful during our stay. I do not forsee staying here again in the future. read more

The motel is old but the room was ok just very outdated. We were fine even thou the TV volume would not work! Since it was just for one night we could just let it go! Then came checkout at 10:56 the phone rang in the room it was the office telling us we had to leave it was 11 AM! There was only 2 cars in the whole parking lot all night! So we went turned the key in and asked for a receipt and was told they could not give us one! So we just asked for a total that was charged to our card you got it could not tell us that either! It's not like they had the whole 20 rooms rented out and was in need for the room we were in but they sure kicked us out 4 minutes early! Think twice before staying here! read more

We've been coming to Fredericksburg for years and still stay here! We love the fact that it's a mom and pop motel, it still is small and stays true to the German roots of the town! I booked my room online and specifically chose a room that had a microwave and mini fridge (this is ALWAYS very important to me when I travel). I arrived to a room with neither of the above items, in a fully booked hotel and they could do nothing about it. I was hesitant to stay here in the first place b/c it seemed too cheap to be any good but took the advice of my mother (this was probably my first mistake) and stayed anyway. I went into this knowing it was dated and not upgraded but very clean with nice people running it. After arrival I told the guy at the front desk and he was nice about it but said it was because I booked online. However, if you go to their website and "check availability" you can book a room based on what it offers, microwave, etc. I fully expect if you have the option to book online, that your business has the capacity to see what the customer selected at the time of booking. If you can't see that information then don't let the guest select that when booking. Simple. I was really upset about this, like having-a-hard-time-not-crying upset. I am getting over it, dealing with it, when the next morning a woman approached me outside and said that it was my fault, that I booked it wrong online that I didn't request a specific room and asked for an adjoining room. ????? Also, that if I stayed there again I should call my reservation in and confirm. You really think I'm going to stay there again when you walk up to the customer and tell them they're wrong?!? What a joke. So let's move on to the details of the room: very old, straight outta the 70s, window units, just old fashioned. But clean, I will give them that, I didn't feel it was dirty at all. The bed was pretty uncomfortable and pillows were even worse. The TV in our room was tiny, like 17" and watching it from the bed hurt my eyes. The bathroom has no ventilation (except for a window that opens up onto the main sidewalk) so if you don't want a steamed up bathroom while you shower you must leave the door open or have everyone walking by or outside hear your private business. Which reminds me, not sure if it is because we were in adjoining rooms or just thin walls but you could hear everything in the room next to us. Conversations about shoes, the hair dryer, the plans the people were making for the day. It didn't really bother me because I was already awake but just realize if you can hear them, they can hear you. We hung out at the pool one night, drinking a few beers with our feet in the water. There was another group of people in the sitting area laughing and talking, I enjoyed the atmosphere out there, it was nice. My parents stayed at the same hotel this trip and their room was big, King size pillow top bed, standard hotel-size TV, nicer tile flooring in the bathroom, microwave, fridge, couch. Funny thing is, my mom requested a different room too. Their mistake just happened to be a good one. Would not stay here again just because of the way I was treated and talked to by the lady employee. Customer Service 101: Never tell the customer they're wrong, even if they are. read more

Under new ownership. I have stayed at the Dietzel for years despite many newer, nicer options in the area. Prices used to be reasonable but they were on par with better hotels in area. It was locally owned and they always accommodated my requests for rooms 101 and 102. The rooms were always clean and had very comfy mattresses. I called months ago for reservations on thanksgiving night. Was told my usual rooms were unavailable. Mattresses in our assigned rooms were caved in and springs could be felt!! Worst night of sleep ever. Coffee pot still had old coffee in it. To top it off just found out that the rooms I requested weren't even used after all!! Won't ever stay here again. read more

I stayed here in summer 2014 during a cross-country move. I was arriving late, and the owner went out of his way to make sure I could get into a room even though their front desk would be closed. (This is a small, independent motel, so they do not have a 24/7 desk staff.) They made a point to turn on the room's air conditioning ahead of my arrival. The room was clean and pleasant and the rate was excellent. Truly a good value and a nice experience. read more

We had no idea where we would stay as we happened into Fredricksburg. For us, this location was wonderful--quiet AND close enough to the action. My biggest regret was that we were staying only one night. The staff was delightful and there were wonderful seating areas throughout the grounds. Bed was excellent. Stayed on our way to Co. Then made a reservation for our return trip. Price is good. Room was clean with micro wave & fridg. My wife left her night gown on way up. Called the next night and asked then to see if they could find it. On return trip the office man delivered it to our room! If you have a dog there is a HUGE place to walk it.
