My wife and I spent a recent weekend at the Hanger Hotel for our 50th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed the personable and professional staff that was very attentive to our needs. The observation deck, upstairs, provided a great view of the busy air traffic. The Airport Diner, right next door, was great. We had lunch on Saturday and had to return for breakfast on Sunday. The experience was so relaxing and enjoyable, it left us with little time to venture into downtown Fredericksburg. We hope to return to the Hanger Hotel again soon! read more

Honestly, we didn't have any complaints about this hotel. A family member from San Antonio that was meeting us in Fredericksburg found this little gem. Honestly I didn't know what to expect, but it was a really cool looking hotel. It is right off the flight line of this small airport and all the decor inside was that of aircraft, and all things vintage. That was pretty cool. The staff are friendly as heck and are always eager to answer any questions you may have. The room was fine, we have no complaints whatsoever about that room. This place has a decent bar and that Saturday night, they had a pianist playing music all night. The bar area (The Officer's Club) was packed with people. I am not sure if there was a convention going on, but there was a lot of elderly people there in the bar area and it was like they all knew each other. That kind of threw me off, LOL!! Anyways, this place is not far from Main Street and it has an awesome Diner right next door to grab you some breakfast before you head out. That is a separate review coming. Very unique experience. The hotel is decorated in the style of the 1940s. Felt relevant to our Fredericksburg visit, which included learning a lot about the Pacific theater of WW2 (don't miss the museum in town). The hotel was built to resemble an airplane hangar and is situated alongside an active runway of the Gillespie County Airport. There are some chairs behind the hotel, facing the runway. It's a nice spot to sit and watch the sunset. The hotel is charming and there is a lounge with a bar and live music. Definitely don't skip that -- it's part of the experience. The ambiance is quite nice and they have board games available. There is also a diner in a separate building although it was already closed by the time we arrived. However, they were having some sort of dance party there (per the staff) but we didn't attend. They have free coffee and tea available all day in the lobby. Also, complimentary pastries in the morning. They were pretty tasty. The room was mostly fine although I didn't find the bed to be particularly comfortable. Tossed and turned all night. However, my biggest complaint was the tub -- it didn't drain properly so I was basically standing in dirty water during my entire shower. Overall, a really interesting and memorable stay. If you like history and/or unique hotels, I definitely recommend the Hangar. read more

Update after many visits to the Hangar over the years. It's still a charming special hotel, though starting to get a little more worn, and not far from really needing a refresh. Wouldn't miss cocktails at the officer's club or breakfast at the diner. I've the same two major complaints that I've had every visit. They use a water softener, and they have it cranked up to 11. Take one shower, and for the rest of the trip, I'm just using water and a scrubber to try and get some more of the soap from the first shower off me. Never feel clean at the Hangar from your first shower until you're back home and can finally really rinse off. The two big upholstered chairs can be comfortable, but you sink almost to the floor getting in to one. There's no place in the room to sit up, work on a laptop, etc. During our last visit we had problems with the night front desk clerk. Grouchy, argumentative, clearly did not want to be there and was not interested in doing anything. The next morning we had a chance to describe the problems in detail to the general manager, and to his credit he really seemed to understand and care about providing consistent customer service. So I can only hope that staff issue will have been resolved before you visit the Hangar. read more

This hotel is very Kool. we came here for a family wedding and stayed at the Hanger Hotel and the wedding party was here as well. The Hanger Hotel is in Fredericksburg Texas. The town of Fredericksburg is awesome. Its filled with shops and restaurants and there are tons of wineries in the vacinity. It was a nice surprise and I never knew it was such a cool destination. My only regret is we didn't plan enough time to explore. The Hanger Hotel is just that. It is an airplane hanger with plenty of action with small aircraft flying in and out. The party was in the hanger wich was so fun. Great space. The hotel was clean and filled with airplane memorabilia. Our room was very clean and the bedding was cozy. I have one complaint about hotel....and its kinda a big one for me..... They would have gotten a solid 5 stars if not for this. After the party ended at about 1030 pm, the bar in the hotel closed at 11pm. 11pm on a Saturday night with a full bar of people wanting to carry on with the night and drop some cash. Nope. I'd really like the proprietors of the Hangar Hotel to pay attention for this review. You have one of the most unique offerings in Texas and possibly the world in owning this property. Basically a hotel on the tarmac of a Hill Country destination. We LOVE staying here. Wife and I don't own a plane; yet find your establishment quite high on the short list of our regular visits. Planes and copters are great along with the regular doings of the airport. I get up early being a rancher's kid. You'll find me smoking a cigarette at 6am watching for touch downs while the wife sleeps till 9. Invite the pilots in for coffee and a game of pool in a bar that doesn't open for another 13 hours. Still roughly 2 hours till the diner opens. Here is my point; there is one person that makes your experience stand out. You have the best bartender in the world and that would be MARY B. Every visit is perfect and I'm not alone. I enjoy asking fellow patrons about her and most have a story about how she helped make their visit exemplary. This is where you should stay. The staff are friendly, the officer's lounge is comfortable and the guests are also in a mood for friendship. The front desk staff was amazingly friendly, the officer's lounge had quality drinks, a comfortable atmosphere, and a large variety of liquors. What were the draw backs? The shower. Honestly, the water pressure either needs work, or the hard water build up in the shower head of the shower in our room needs to be addressed. Replace the shower head. All in all. This is a great establishment. You're ten minutes outside of town. It has a full bar. The building has tons of history lining the walls, so you'll be entertained. The owners of this place are great and we love coming here. However, the night desk clerk/mask nazi NEVER misses an opportunity to chide and berate customers. I get it, if you're within 6' of other people you need to wear a mask, CDC guidance, etc. But if I'm with my family and 30' away, trying to take a drink from a water bottle, and you're going to literally harass my friends and family!!! What about the coffee bar downstairs? If I get coffee tomorrow and take down my mask to take a sip will I get chided again like a child or yelled at? When there is no one within dozens of feet of me? Better service is expected and desired or I can find a different hotel. Rude and condescending is NOT a "Customer focused Business Practice." read more

I had heard about The Hangar Hotel from a friend a few years ago and was intrigued because it's a 1940s/WWII themed hotel with aviation and South Pacific decor. I love that era of history, so I had wanted to visit for awhile. We ended up staying there for three nights while visiting Fredericksburg to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. I was so excited! When we drove up, there were no cars in the parking lot, and it wasn't clear where to enter or where or how to park. It didn't help that it was dark and there was no directional signage that we could see. Once we found the front door, I walked into a completely silent and empty lobby. A man walked in to help me but was unfriendly and almost abrupt. There was no warmth, no welcome, no mention of our anniversary, no details about the property. At least check-in was fast! My husband did interact with another front desk person later in our stay who was much more helpful and kind though. Our room was on the ground floor and roughly in the middle of the hallway. The room was cute but worn down. One of the leather chairs had a gaping hole in it. The tub had mildew, loose grout and was slow to drain. The side tables had lots of scratches with multiple water rings. The carpet seemed newer and nice though, as did the curtains. But our biggest issues were noise related. Doors constantly slammed up and down the hallway and woke us up many times, even over our loud white noise machine. This property also claims to be 18+ only, but that is truly unenforceable, as a child (maybe 6-7 years old) stayed across the hall from us for at least two nights. The first night, he and his family stood in the hallway and he cried while the family discussed how stupid the hotel's age limit rule was but how it didn't matter because they were just going to stay anyway to appease the upset child. We heard all this through our closed door! This family was one of the main noise culprits during our stay, as they constantly slammed their door and we heard the child making noise multiple times. This would be expected at a Holiday Inn, but not at an 18+ property. It seems this rule should just be removed from The Hangar's website, as it is apparently disregarded by immature parents who sneak their children in the back door while creating frustrations and disruptions for those who are following the rules and hoping to have a child-free stay. From the customer service to the noise issues to the rooms themselves, The Hangar would greatly benefit from an overall refresh to ensure a more positive guest experience. Three stars is probably generous given our stay, but we do love the concept and appreciate The Hangar's attempt to keep an incredible era alive. The execution just needs some help. Whether or not you stay at the hotel, be sure to visit the Airport Diner next door. The food, service and atmosphere were great, and you can watch the airplanes fly in and out while you eat. read more

Worst hotel in Fredericksburg. Horrible service, tv didn't work, tub didn't drain and their bar and restaurant is only open on the weekend. Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, they charged us for a gift card instead of applying it, so we just saw a $600 charge on our credit card. We planned our family reunion here and I was severely disappointed. First off, they do not allow outside alcohol in the Officers Club (OC). The management used the law as an excuse. They should figure out how to accommodate guests and allow outside alcohol in the OC. Also the bar in the OC is only open Friday-Sun. This means we had to keep the alcohol at the front desk or at the Tiki hut out doors. We chose the Tiki hut and had to continually go outside to partake of our alcohol. The first night we were kicked out of the officers club at 11PM. There was no notice posted anywhere that it closed at 11PM. When we got to our $150/ night rooms, there was no coffeepot, refrigerator, or microwave. They should have had these for a room at that cost. We were planning on breakfast at the diner, however found out it is only open Thursday through Sunday. Another disappointment! The second night we again went to the OC to play some pool for a while and again put our alcohol outside at the Tiki bar. To our surprise the exterior door to the Tiki hut locked behind us as we went out. We asked the front desk to unlock it and was told "management locked it so I can't unlock it." We had to ensure someone stayed in the OC to let the others in. When one of us tried to set a wakeup using the phone, he was told the phone does not work. The clock in my room also did not work. Also some of the ceiling boards in the first floor hallway are coming loose. I question if the maintenance is being properly done. The third and fourth nights were a repeat of the first night with one glaring exception, a wedding reception with extremely loud music late into the night on Thursday. The only good things about the hotel are the the employees who were very polite and helpful, the theme (WWII) and watching the aircraft land and take off. read more

We stayed here for Oktoberfest because the shuttle stop is only a few hundred away. It's very convenient for attending the festival. The hotel is aviation themed and if you enjoy aircraft then you will enjoy this place. It caters to pilots since it is located next to the airport tarmac. They have several dozen rocking chairs to sit in while you watch the planes take off and land. It really is fun on the weekends to watch the aircraft. You never know what type of plane will come in next. The prices are on the high end because they cater to pilots. There is a nice lounge with piano music on weekends, and a small bar outside as well. They had complimentary scones and coffee and juice in the mornings which was nice, and cookies in the late afternoon. They have themed dances in their adjacent conference center, so that's worth checking out. read more

We are Yankees from Rhode Island. For over 20 years, each Christmas, my dad has been treating his family to a Christmas Dinner. We frequented, for many of these dinners, a wonderful, old, large, cozy home-turned-restaurant in Taunton, Ma, called Benjamin's, with a library, festively decorated for the season, and a comfortable lounge where we could begin the night with drinks and laughter. Since we have moved to Texas, and my parents have been traveling to us for the holiday season, we have had a tough time replicating this wonderful yearly tradition. My husband and I had yet to locate a similar restaurant that had a lounge area where we could relax with my sister and her husband, and my mom and dad before dinner. This year, we had reservations at a place in Fredericksburg that we thought would be nice, however, at the last minute, we were bumped from the lovely little spaced we had reserved to a table outside. It was December 14th, and the weather was less-than-Texas-like. Sorry. So, we searched elsewhere. We had researched the Officer's Club at the Hangar Hotel early on, so, the day before our dinner, I called and found that it might just work for our before-dinner drinks; especially since dinner was across the street at the Cabernet Grill. The ride from Austin for my sister and brother-in-law was well worth it. Upon entering the Officer's Club, smiles never left our faces. We settled into the six overstuffed red leather chairs in front of the fireplace, ordered some drinks, and munched on the complimentary crackers and cheese spread. Our bartender/waitress was awesome; the drinks were delicious; and the price was just right. We didn't stay long enough for the piano player; but we will be back. Sis gave us a gift certificate for Christmas, and they will be heading back to book a night at the hotel and meet us for drinks in the Officer's Club. They had some storm damage so restaurant in hotel closed but you can bring your own drinks and snacks and sit at tiki bar outside. Diner next door open weekends in morning. We ate mostly in town. This hotel is absolutely perfect for the weekend getaway. The price is great, the hotel is clean and updated and watching the planes and helicopters takeoff and land is a definite treat. It's a two story hotel with about 50 rooms. It's quiet and the rooms are absolutely lovely. They have a great balcony to watch from. It gets windy back there so just FYI. HOWEVER, I have to say the staff...ugh, I hate to go into detail, but these are the things that make hotels. The MP made reservations for us and our friends almost 3 weeks ago (you can't book online, so you have to call them). When we got there, they didn't have our reservation, but they had my friends. Odd seeing as my man made the reservs for BOTH couples. So when she asked me for a confirmation # I had to call the MP for it (sidenote: The men came down later in the day). She started getting an attitude with me saying it was no problem, they had plenty of rooms. Yes I get that, but the point is, is that we made a reservation. What happened? All she said was that "someone made a mistake with the booking." Fine. So she got our rooms situated and all is good and forgotten. The next day I get a call in the room "Allison, will you be checking out today?". Um, "no...im booked all weekend." Then this lady gets snotty with me saying "well we noticed you didn't check in yesterday and we had to get you a room." I said "Yes, well that was because you guys lost our reservation". Then I proceeded to explain what had happened the day before. She said she had a reservation under my name, and when I told her that I gave the front desk lady my name and my boyfriend name she just goes "Uh-huh". Ugh. Why are you arguing with me? So put off. Other than that little mishap, the hotel is really great. I would recommend this to everyone (just make sure to keep your confirmation #!). The diner next door is cute. The waitresses are so sweet and the food is good. The biscuits are absolutely the best ever!!! I could have eaten 100 of them. I never got a chance to use the Pacific Showroom, which was such a drag, cause according to the website, it looked absolutely amazeballs. The Officers club looked great, with live music, snacks and the best martini's in town. Yay! It's about 3-4 miles to the Main Street area downtown and such a pretty drive. We were in Texas for my daughter's wedding which was in San Antonio and added on a few days for vacation. I found this hotel through http://Hotels.com. We like to stay at places that are a little different and off the beaten path. This one sounded very interesting. It was an airplance hangar made into a hotel which has 50 rooms on 2 floors. It is the only hotel in the world built on a tarmack. We were there in the middle of the week so there wasn't much going on. We were on the second floor. The only drawn back is that none of the rooms face the landing strip. However there was a large veranda/porch with chairs on the second floor where you could go and relax. We did see one lear jet take off right before a storm rolled in. The decor is 1940s even to the music playing in the lobby. The staff was super. Provided an internet cord for use in the room. As well as sodas and water. Since we were there in the middle of the week the Officer's Club was not open. Loved Fredericksburg. Great little quaint town with great shops. There are also several wineries in the area. It's in the middle of nowhere so you will need a car. About an 1 1/2 hr. drive from Austin. Also went to the Wild Seed Farms, which is the largest wild flower seed farm. There was also a small butterfly atrium. Lots and lots of all kinds of stuff nature related, i.e. outdoor, plants, seeds, birdhouses, windchimes, indoor, clothes, jewelry, etc. Would love to go back on for a long weekend. Hotel was fine. Cool location near local airport makes for some fun viewing of the planes coming in and out. Had high hopes for this place but there were lots of problems. No food options...coffee was always out, no breakfast, and coke machine was even empty. The diner next door (which looked cool) was only open for 3 days of the week, and the bar inside the hotel was closed for renovations. Maybe if everything was humming right along I would give it another star, but being pretty far from downtown (4 miles driving) I would not recommend over better options. read more

We decided to stay her for Octoberfest. The shuttle is walking distance and very convenient. When we checked in the front desk people was super nice. Easy check in. This hotel does not allow pets or children. Only people 18 and over are allowed. This is ok with us because we don't have little kids anymore. They offer free coffee, juice and scones in the morning. And hot chocolate chip cookies st night. Great touch. The rooms were ok. Nothing great. But it was quiet. The bar is really cool. They offer a full bar and nice selection of craft beers in bottles. There was a guy playing the piano which was a nice touch. Don't know if we would stay here again but we had a great stay for our Octoberfest visit to Fredericksburg. read more

Cynthia was our salesperson, and she was great! She explained everything we needed to know, answered all of our questions which in turn, gave us what we needed to make the best choice for us. What I appreciated most was the overall pleasant atmosphere, like you were stopping by to see a neighbor or friend's house to hear about their new hot tub. Absolutely none of that expected commission-driven high pressure irritating "car salesman" crap! We've loved this place since the first time we visited and when the wedding planning began, it was the FIRST place that popped into my head! Luckily the dates we wanted were available & we fell in love with the conference center right away: and the rest is history! Working with them on the wedding was so easy. Gonna start off by saying this place needs to upgrade its reservation system and this hotel does not allow guests under 18. With that said onto why I like this hotel. Its very unique first of all. An old hanger turned into a hotel . The room we had was large and worked out great. Love the fact you can watch planes take off and land. The Diner next door provided excellent food and great service! It also has a large convention room inside the hanger next door. What a show they put on for the wedding we attended. Great setup inside and everything went perfect. Weekly room rates are around $119, weekends around $169. When our reservations at another hotel fell through, we ended up at the Hangar Hotel, and SO GLAD WE DID! it's not in walking distance of downtown, but it's got lots of character, very friendly people, and such a cool location! The CUTEST boutique hotel! I wanted to take my husband to Fredericksburg for his birthday and this place was recommended by my coworker. I am so glad I went with her recommendation! He LOVED this little hotel and is already talking about coming back with friends! This hotel is located about 2.5 miles from Main St in Gillepsie Airport. The hotel has a 40s theme and is very clean and well kept. They have an observation deck where you can watch planes take off and land.. a truly fascinating experience. The rooms are a good size -- well decorated and had lots of charm. Clean and quiet. The hotel also has a diner that is open until 2 AM!!!! The staff was very friendly -- rooms were affordable. A great - and a little expensive - place to stay. This is a very unique experience compared to a regular room at a chain hotel. You truly feel like you are back in another era while here.
