It wasn't dramatic, but they've gone the full "fast casual" route: pick a grain, pick a protein, and pick two sides. Upon my visit, I did just that: chicken, farro, mac and cheese, and curried kale and delicata squash. The portions are really big now, though, admittedly, it does make for good leftovers! There was no way I'd finish all of my bowl at the time of purchase, even if I was famished. My chicken was flavorful, but salty. My kale was flavorful but salty. My mac and cheese was flavorful but salty (and dry!). Can we sense a theme here? I had some of my beau's bowl; he got brown rice, steak, cauliflower, and mac and cheese. There was visible flake salt on top of his steak! Now...I'm a girl that LOVES her salt. Sometimes, I get myself in a little trouble with it. (Haaaa.) That being said, I had a very hard time finishing my portion both when I was eating at Dig Inn AND when I was eating my leftovers at lunch the next day. I was parched! Plus, the prices shot up! A great place for a healthy, delicious lunch. There always seems to not be enough seats or workers to handle the crowds that rush in from nearby Columbia campus. However, despite always being packed and crazy, the staff has a great attitude and the food is consistently good. It's a little on the pricy sids, but you know what you are eating is fresh and healthy. I really like all the veggie sides, especially the Brussels. I found my steak to be a bit chewy the one time I got meat, and I found the Mac n cheese to be a bit grainy. Because of this, I've stuck to veggies and been consistently impressed. Maybe I'm just generally grumpy, but when eating at a restaurant requires instructions on how to order (i.e., you can only order certain foods from the counter, others have to be ordered from an employee holding menus and a little clipboard), and when the employee who's supposed to provide instruction is snippy about providing the information, the food is going to have to be incredible for me to ever come back. Well, it wasn't. As much as my daughters like this place, it was mediocre at best. I have ordered on Dig's app a couple of times recently and both times the order was not ready even though I was a few minutes late to pick it up. So that's annoying. Today the manager kindly made my order while I waited. I was so distracted by wanting to get home on time for a zoom meeting that it took me a little while to notice that none of the workers who were serving the food were wearing masks. None. One of the workers explained that they are all vaccinated, and it's company policy that vaccinated servers are not required to wear masks. In June that would probably have seemed reasonable but with the Delta variant and the reported erosion in vaccine protection that doesn't seem like enough. My first time here definitely wasn't the best experience, but I decided to give it another try. This time around I got the chicken and was definitely happy with it. It wasn't dry and was cooked perfectly. The brown rice is a bit bland for my liking, so I got hot sauce with it which completely changed the flavor for me. Dig inn... A popular hang out amongst Columbia students and upper west side residents. My boyfriend took me here after hearing raving reviews and to be honest, the dig inn isn't bad at all. The way it works is that you pick a meat and grains and two sides- rounding to about ~$15 per platter if you choose a large. Which honestly was almost too much food to consume for me. Since it is a seasonal market and it was near Thanksgiving I decided to get into the fall spirit and get some turkey and stuffing with Brussels sprouts and sweet potato. Honestly, everything was great but I felt it was a bit pricy. But not gonna lie- the sweet tea is to die for and free refills, that's my thing. Can't go wrong with homemade tea. The dining area is set up nicely, lots of tables but a bit cramped in my opinion. That's quite alright as many people take their food to go anyway. I meant to write this review weeks ago!! This location is absolutely amazing. Everyone who works here is a hero in my eyes. They never get my order wrong, they're always the sweetest people, and even in the middle of a pandemic they know how to put a smile on guests faces. Yah, there is a slight Chipotle vibe--but only because of the light airy pseudo farm decor and the amazing price point. Don't hate me because I beautiful. But for anyone from the West (even Midwest) this screams of the stuff we enjoy and eat: - Brussels sprouts, updated so you like them. - Beets, cooked and fancied. - Red Peppers, flame grilled. - Kale (ok, that's a tough sell for me but so what). And those are just the sides. Proteins offer delicious wild salmon, turkey, spicy meatballs, and braised beef. Mmmmmm... Where can you get all this (or salads or sandwiches) at a fast food joint for under $15? Maybe at the lunch menu of Communal but we are unfortunately not in Provo or at Sundance. This will have to do. And it does--quite nicely, thank you. Manhattan may be the center of the world and it does reflect this in culinary options. The place is usually packed with Columbia University types and it seems a bit cramped (the only detractor, hence the four stars), but turnover is quick. The food is good. This is my on-and-off lunch place. The large vegetable plate is by far the best value in terms of quantity and quality, as I find that the meat options I've tried -- while tasty for the most part -- each tend to have some nagging issue. The steak tends to be very chewy and sinewy, which makes the otherwise-welcomed medium-rare seem a bit alarming. The chicken comes in pre-sliced bits, and some bits are very dry while others are perfectly cooked. Definitely would recommend the sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, the kale side dish (forgot what's in it exactly, but it has made a kale fan out of me), and the broccoli-garlic side (haven't seen this in a while, and hope it comes back). The cost of iced tea here has gone up from about $1.75-ish to well over 2 bucks. That's pretty disappointing, as I'm shelling out more money for an unchanged product that in all likelihood costs Dig Inn the same few cents to make as it did a few months ago when the price was much lower. Also, on my last visit, I saw the employees draining the contents of a tea dispenser into a tub of murky-looking liquid, which made me lose my appetite quite a bit as I was filling my cup right next to the grimy fluid. This kind of clean-up should be saved for closing time, and should not be done in front of customers. That brings me to the reason I can't give 5 stars as much as I would like to: there are moments of blatant unprofessionalism that have yet to be addressed in my 1+ years of going here. Things like the tea clean-up mentioned above, as well as employee-to-employee communication during peak hours (some employees are terse and even just plain rude to their co-workers if they aren't moving fast enough). I've worked in the service industry for a long time, and there are ways to get across those kinds of messages in a professional way that respects one's co-workers and the customers as well. Also, when some employees are on their lunch break, they tend to get inappropriately vocal in the dining area (very loud laughing and talking, to the point of it being borderline-obnoxious) and I recall on a recent visit one of the employees was playing music on her phone while eating. I get it, you work there and it's kind of like "home"....but it's not your living room. This was off-putting to me and several other customers, and should be addressed by upper-level management in this location. I can't imagine what makes certain employees think this is acceptable behavior just because they aren't on the clock -- and in Dig Inn uniform, no less. Secondly, some employees are unfamiliar with certain aspects of the menu (especially splitting a side into two half-sides). There is also variation in the quantity of food among different employees, which often tends to lean toward the skimpy side. The quality of the food itself, however, overshadows the staff issues just enough to make me continue considering Dig Inn as a viable lunch spot. read more

I'm doing this weird Paleo Whole 30 eating thing, which has basically made eating out nearly impossible. No alcohol, no grains, no legumes, no dairy, no sugar. Did you know that those things are nearly in everything? EVERYTHING. Apparently, I am a masochist. I did a little Google search for Paleo-friendly restaurants in NYC and this little nugget popped up. The pros: (1) It's cheap. I got two meats (lamb & beef), and two sides (sweet potatoes & asparagus) and unsweetened iced tea for $13.75. (2) Food was relatively tasty, not delicious, but tasty. (3) It's healthy take out. Very refreshing when you live in Harlem and the healthiest eating option near you is a Popeye's. The cons: This place is new. Did I go during a soft opening? Things were a little rough. Was ignored for the first 5 minutes of standing there. Girl behind the counter was screaming about how there was no more bread. A delivery dude came in with two loaves of bread and accidentally dropped them in the food. Yikes. The food is held in these cast iron pots on electric burners, but when I received my food it was barely lukewarm. I asked the super sweet guy at the register if they had an ingredients list for the food and he said no, which was surprising and disappointing. I asked him if any of the foods had sugar in them, and he said no, but he neglected to point out that some items have agave and maple syrup in them, which are-- surprise-- forms of sugar. If I wasn't torturing myself Paleo-style, I wouldn't return. But I might try it again soon. If I eat another hard-boiled egg I'm going to barf. read more

I brought a couple of co workers with me and they were both impressed! As you walk in and up to the counter you are greeted by friendly servers, they happily explained the system to me, one meat over grains and two sides. They even gave a sample of the bulgar wheat grain. There is a selection of proteins served over a bed of grains; today was bulgar wheat and brown rice. They have two sizes small and large, the serving plates are the same but it goes by weight. They have a selection of sauteed vegetables and starches including roasted sweet potatoes and a mac and cheese. you can also pick a cold side. They also have sandwiches and salads. Everything was really fresh, they were constantly replacing the foods. The motto here is locally sourced farm to table in a fast food setting. I didn't see that the food was organic, but it did taste very good. I had steak over bulgar wheat with spinach and brussel sprouts along with a passion fruit tea. Steak was a medium - medium rare, nice char on the the outside very tender. The bulgar wheat was delicious, almost like a fried rice. The spinach was very fresh but not cooked all the way down, it still had a nice crisp and sauteed with onions and garlic, brussel spouts were also cooked well, not mushy at all! Although this food is a better choice, I did note the veggies were nicely salted and cooked in an olive oil. The iced tea had a clean taste, not too sweet. The prices were reasonable $13 for everything! The place is small and cramped (like most spaces in the city) they are applying for a permit to have outside seating. Fresh daisies at all the tables is a nice touch. Lots of reclaimed wood and exposed brick make this place visually appealing. I'm glad I was able to come, and will definitely visit again. read more

Just as the chain prides itself, the food is incredibly fresh and very well done. It's supposed to be an on-the-go type of place but the food is of high quality and definitely not boring. Many of the side options are healthy veggies but on the creative and tasty side. I just wish there would be a vegetarian/vegan protein option for the plate (rather than just tofu salad). Their juices have some veggies blended in, while I like them I could see that it's not something everyone readily enjoys. I couldn't help getting the plate with two sides for the past few times but I will definitely be back to try the sandwiches. This location is new so their staff are still learning and adjusting but everyone seems very friendly and attentive, even during the busy rush hours. The design of the joint is industrial yet rustic and homey. I like that they use compostable and recycled containers and utensils. Whoever planned the location layout got a bit too ambitious about maximizing the space, I always feel overwhelmed by the sitting arrangement--how close you would be to other people, how crowded it can get, traffic doesn't flow down the counter aisle smoothly, etc. I wouldn't count on being able to bring company and sit down to enjoy the meal here.
