Came here for breakfast one morning while visiting NYC, it was a convenient option because it was walking distance from where we were staying, and they were open on a holiday. They had a combined breakfast and lunch menu as well as a separate brunch menu. We ordered the Nova Benny from the breakfast and steak sandwich from the brunch menu to share. Both items were good, but the steak sandwich was pretty messy and hard to share. Someone in the group got the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, which were my favorite thing I tried there. The restaurant is pretty big, so even in the busy Times Sq. area we managed to get a table within 15 minutes. The fried chicken sandwich was mostly batter and was so overly deep fried that it was hard to eat and dry. The french toast lacked flavor and was mushy. Several reviewers had high praise for their French Toast with different condiments. With that being said I was excited to try one of my favorite staples ( it is for me) and see how it compared to my all time favorite at Zabars. First the good, a very generous portion of very thick sliced crusted challah and nice fruit condiments was delivered with real maple syrup; not the cheap corn syrup. Now the con, unlike Zabars that marinate their French Toast for hours it seems Friedman's gives it the one quick dip and the batter never saturates the thick challah bread enough to give you the taste of anything but bread. There is a need for lots of maple syrup to get some flavor when eating. I assume they added vanilla and other ingredients to the batter but you would never know from this experience. I think other customers ordered toppings on their French toast and that seemed to satisfy them or I just got an order that was rushed through the kitchen. We aren't the biggest fan of beets and they'd probably go to a waste, untouched in the salad so I inquired if they could be replaced with eggs. A general note, but sometimes people want a more robust salad base instead of kale/arugula so I requested a substitute of romaine. From my two minimal requests, I got the vibe that this easily threw our server's flow off-maybe saying we were allergic would've led to more empathy? Even with this odd patch in our order process, the food was really fresh and light (in a good way where you feel well nourished and not hungry for more). We actually ordered salmon in two different forms and the salad had more umami whereas the burger faired a bit too dry-the norm for burgers and needed something in the patty to make it more moist besides the sauce as a side lifeline. I'd come back but probably during a less busy time, continue ordering from their savory menu as I get the sense that this is more of their specialty, and would definitely recommend calling ahead if you want to be efficient. read more

For the Farm Egg Omelette, the market vegetables in the omelette were just broccoli and mushrooms. I personally would've liked the broccoli chunks to have been cooked more so that they weren't so crunchy. The potato hash on the side was seasoned well, but it also could've been cooked through more. It was a good, filling portion though, with the 2 slices of toast (choice of rye, whole wheat, white, or sourdough), avocado, 3-egg omelette, and small side of potato hash. The herb fries weren't that good. They were on the raw side and were pretty tasteless. Overall, the meal wasn't bad. Ambiance is cozy, and service is great. Early Sunday morning brunch before a performance, we stopped at Friedman's with a party of four to fill up with yummies. And fill we did! We got the mushroom toast and the blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes off the special menu and they really hit the spot. Probably the best contrast of savory umami mushroom toast with two poached eggs atop cooked mushrooms and a mushroom purer over thick toast, and a sweet stack of fluffy pancakes topped with fresh blueberry compote and a huge dollop of whipped cream. Sweet enough, but there's syrup if you want. Wash it down with black coffee, listen to the sounds of fellow New Yorkers and you got a great brunch. This restaurant has a lot of gluten-free options which made it very easy for my family to eat here. They were able to get the chicken and waffles gluten free and a gluten-free grilled cheese. I have always loved catching a bite here. The food and coziness is always good but the experience was ruined for me last night. My server asked if I wanted still or sparkling water and I chose sparkling. I had a delicious branzino ciabatta and coffee. When the check arrived, I was stunned. With tax and tip , my 24.99 choice + coffee came to $49.00. Nowhere on the menu did it state that water was $8.00, nor did the server mention this. As someone who has had many hospitality clients, this was just wrong. I asked to speak to the manager, and she did refund the vost of the water, but this experience left me with a bad feeling. Since being gluten-free, I haven't had good fried chicken in so long until yesterday. The fried chicken was so flavorful and delicious. The breading did fall apart a bit, but I think that's expected for gluten-free fried food. We also tried the fried fish and I will say it wasn't my favorite and a bit too greasy for me. The brussels sprouts were perfectly cooked with a nice sauce. They were also pretty large serving sizes as I ended up with leftovers to go. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to see us pretty quickly, which was nice. I would say the restaurant is medium size, has a bar with seating and is a pretty casual spot. I've dined at Friedman's many times and had everything from 5 star experiences to 1 star experiences The food is consistently good. Among my favorites are the Babka French Toast, the Tuna melt, the BLAT sandwich and the spinach and artichoke dip. These days I have been sticking to delivery to avoid some of the aspects I detail below. They do have many many many gluten free choices so it is a good place to bring friends with celiacs. Service at Friedman's is inconsistent at best. Sometimes it's okay, but most of the time it leaves a lot to be desired. I have had many a meal here without water refills , long waits for food without anyone checking on you, and just weird ambiance. The electronic payment system prompts you to tip generously, with the severe holding the device for you, so I almost always end up tipping 20% for terrible service. UGH Of note, they do offer a rewards program through Toast and if you share your d.o.b, you can expect to receive a $10 off coupon for your birthday. Also I corresponded with Sarah J. From Friedman's after one particularly bad experience, and she did a great job making me a customer again, we were warmly welcomed back and offered a meal to replace the bad experience we had had. So I will say they seem receptive to feedback. read more

This is my second time visiting Friedman's on 72nd. The food was great the first time, the second time I came with my boyfriend who has Celiac Disease (Gluten Intolerance). And since this establishment is coined as "Gluten-Free Pioneers", I expected more from the Grilled Cheese he ordered. As you can see, it looks like a kids meal rather than a full-sized meal that was $19. It also doesn't look anything like it does on the Website. Last time I ate here I got the Tuna Melt, and it was without a doubt twice the size than his meal. Regardless if the size of the sandwich is determined by the type of bread, I think they should have better gluten-free bread options before considering themselves pioneers. Nonetheless, the spicy tuna was well proportioned and tasty, my only critique is it would be better if spicier. My sesame salmon salad was delicious, although I wish there were more salmon pieces for the size of the vegetables. The service was good, the servers were attentive and kind. We also sat outside which was nice, it was a warm day out and I thought the seating was well spread out. My favorite grilled cheese spot (I literally would come alone just to have it for lunch during my break)! The bread is perfectly buttered, and the smoked Gouda with aged cheddar is a delicious combination. Comes with fries and pickles ($19). Tomato in the grilled cheese is optional and free. I don't know what the big deal is about this place. The original location is in a fun, unexpected location at least. The burger is pretty good, but nothing amazing. The friend chicken is fair at best--most folks would do better on their second or third try making chicken at home ...and yet it's $30. The waffle it came with was very good at least. The decor and music are all surprisingly uninspired--completely bland. I'm mystified everywhere I see bookshelves populated by just a few books each, but here they go a step further and shelve half the books pages out (spines in)--so you can't even identify the books. So weird and careless, unless they're purposely hiding the titles. I probably should've know better than ordering a martini but I wanted one--and received one that again was like something you'd regret serving at home. And most (worst) of all the place oozes a kind of self-serious smugness like they're the height of hipness. I tried to order from them on DoorDash. Don't order from Friedman's on DoorDash. My experience was terrible. My food was delivered to the wrong address. I had a picture of my DoorDash order receipt showing the correct address. Initially Friedman's told me they couldn't give me a refund while DoorDash said they couldn't refund me more than delivery. Ultimately DoorDash did the right thing, refunded my delivery charge and gave me a credit for the rest of the order. Friedman's behavior made me sad and disappointed as I have loved going to the restaurant in person. See the picture of the address on the order (I deleted my CC) and the conversation with the delivery person from Friedman's below. The delivery person says "the restaurant gave me the wrong address.". All this said I love eating at Friedman's. I have eaten at four of their locations and the food, service and atmosphere at each of them is great. read more

We actually had lunch at 2 Friedman's locations with 2 different sets of friends, within 2 weeks! One was a better meal than the other, but both were good. An important note, for some people, is that the menu offers loads of gluten free choices. On an intermittently rainy, very hot & muggy Thursday, we met friends who were coming in from NJ at the 31St location, near Penn Station. I'd give that experience 5 stars. Service was excellent and the food was excellent. My friend and I both ordered the avocado toast; I know, trite, but it was really very good for the genre. This friend eats only gluten free breads, so this menu thrilled her with the options. I forget what her husband had, but he was pleased. My husband had the farmers omelet. You have to know that he wasn't happy about going to Friedman's in the first place, because we'd gone to one of the first ones pre-pandemic and not had a good meal, at what he considered an overpriced diner. This reluctant visit, he was more than pleasantly surprised! The omelet had plenty of vegetables in it, the coffee was good, what more could he ask?! We ordered a dessert when we ordered the meal and asked for it after we finished our lunch. The lemon ricotta gf pancakes were amazingly light, fluffy, delicious. The waiter waited asked if we were ready for dessert, before he went to get it, freshly made, from the kitchen. Our 2nd visit was to the West 72nd St location. Unfortunately it was a Sunday, but that's when these friends were available, and this location was roughly halfway for both couples. I called ahead of time to get on the waitlist and the person on the phone was very accommodating. Our friends were about 10 minutes late, , but I was assured that we'd get the next available booth once all 4 of us were there. It's understandable that it was packed on this Sunday at 1 pm, so even after we were all present we had a 10-15 minute wait, but the people up front were keeping us posted. The meal, however, and maybe because it was Sunday brunch time and they were slammed, wasn't as good as the one from before. My husband thought his omelet wasn't as good; my unsweetened iced tea took a long time to come, after the others had their beverages and before the meal. So I recommend Friedman's for a weekday meal! Always love Friedmans! Had a great meal here with a friend before a show at Beacon. We got potstickers and broccoli falafel to start. Both were great. The falafel could have used more of a dipping sauce but overall good. Then we shared a Greek chopped salad and fish and chips. Everything was amazing. Classic New York, Friedman's serves "elevated" breakfast foods, sandwiches/burgers, and salads. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Personally, while the interior isn't exactly small, and they do have outdoor seating, I wouldn't recommend this place for parties larger than 8. They seem to take reservations, but regardless, this place can get crowded on the weekends. Since it's so close to Central Park, it's popular to order takeout and have picnics nearby. I think it's slightly overpriced, but quality-wise, you get what you pay for. Most menu items are either gluten free or can be gluten free. The portions are rather small, so it's not exactly value pricing for the amount of food you get. The poach egg and salmon (nova) benny was average, but we really loved the French toast and pancakes here. read more
