We love Digger's. The kitschy decor has not been updated since the early to mid-1970s -- literally. But excellent cocktails prepared by true bartenders. The food is very good. The chef is Hawaiian, and the seafood special is always good. I am also partial to the batter-fried shrimp -- huge and excellent. I also like their ribs. While it is not haute cuisine, it very good and far less expensive than comparable venues in large cities. Our Beverly Hills reviewer did not comment on the very reasonable prices as compared to Mortons, etc. Plus the staff is friendly and bend-over-backward accommodating! We are regulars. read more

Really cool and pretty supper club style place. It's kind of expensive, but the Moscow Mule is a really weird and delicious drink and the alfredo sauce is amazing. Would have given 4 stars but... A co-worker and I got there at 8:30 (they close at 9pm). Servers "did not" look happy to see us. The food was really really good. I ordered the Blue Marlin fish. The food is good, the chocolate martinis are fabulous and the appetizers are excellent also. The restaurant absolutely needs to be remodeled and cleaned really well as I was a little disappointed the last time I was there it was starting to look really grungy and dirty even though it is a good supper club restaurant ... you want to go there feeling good and looking good and having good food and so the colonial chairs and the worn out decor' and grungy walls and bathrooms have reached the point of no return. If the food is really great most times I don't care I'll look away from that but it's crossed over into need to do something about this or sell the place. I have always love the ambience there and the atmosphere, Frank Sinatra on the walls and the feeling of another time while eating great food and La Crosse is worthy of them paying attention to the place because lacrosse is trying to become a really cool place (in a way:) But, the fact that nothing is open past 10 o'clock at night is not good for the millennial crowd or the business or traveling crowd. Internet in The downtown area is...spotty very spotty. They had that next step right at their doorstep by a company in California offering to put in 15 cell towers to increase and improve the Internet in the downtown area and outside that area and it was a very unfortunate situation that A you W logistics supervisor stopped the whole project too bad for all of the small businesses downtown there Nonetheless diggers remains on my top 10 list for downtown La Crosse or food ambience and prices are for star but that's OK I just don't want to see it slip anymore than it has The food is really good! It's been a long time since I dined at Digger ' s Sting. Shame on me. I'd forgotten was a great restaurant it is. I ordered the Prime Rib and Nairagi fish combo. Both rare and so flavorful! Our whole party ordered prime rib with different fish and we were all very happy. Garlic toast was crunchy on the outside and fresh, my spinach salad was super fresh, and the steamed veggies weren't overcooked. The service was incredible! Yes, our meal wasn't cheap. We didn't WANT a cheap meal in a noisy chain served by someone who didn't know what they were doing. We took our time, savored our meals, and had a great time. I was in town for work. Walked in and was pleasantly surprised. The staff was great. Started with a glass of red and the escargot. Really enjoyed it. Moved onto the soup then the filet migon. Everything is very well done. Nothing stands out, but nothing disappoints either. I really had a good time and would totally recommend Digger's Sting. Ate dinner there last night - a Friday. Food was good but the wait staff and the manager was very rude. Restaurant is in need of upgrade. Paneling from the 60s. We arrived at 915 and we were asked to order by 945. We complied but evidently other wait staff was upset. We spent $250 and others were still in bar but they were telling us they wanted to leave. My husband and I went to Digger's Sting for a much-needed night out, and were very happy with the results. We're used to Chicago-quality dining establishments, and were pleased that Digger's was on par, if not better, than a Chicago steakhouse. I chose the special of the night, a teriyaki petite steak, and my husband had the ribs. The steak was tender and perfectly prepared at medium, and the sides complemented the dish. The ribs were reported as spicy and not dry, with a nice sauce as complement. Service was fast and polite, and the table we had by the window was very comfortable. Interesting place. Funky outside decor followed by some cool old school decor inside. The wait staff was fantastic. I had the sirloin and shrimp which were both good. The sides were ok. I got the garlic mashed potatoes and they were missing something. The garlic bread is probably the best I have had - the garlic bread is extremely garlic buttery. After being at the restaurant for a bit the funky decor goes from being cool to feeling outdated. read more

We had a group of 10 with 5 checks. Our waitress Brittany was excellent. I had the Ahi Tuna, grilled that was on special with the red-smashed potatoes. It also came with steamed vegetables and soup or salad. My DH had grilled walleye. That was so good too. The other orders ranged from tenderloins, shrimp, and prime rib. The garlic toast is so buttery it about melts in your mouth. This is somewhat pricey for us $80.00 for dinner and 3 drinks so we don't frequent as often as we'd like. read more

I have no idea where or what these other reviewers are eating. I say that not to be mean, but to be really honest. I always complain that Madison, Wisconsin is a place where time stopped around 1985. Well, in LaCrosse, time has stood still since the early 70's. This is so weird because if you travel to the east side, Onalaska, it is just chain stores, Target, Starbucks, etc. Anyway, so I ventured into Digger's Sting. I should have been smart enough to go to Outback in Onalaska. Steakhouses in this vein, have been replaced in most cities with the chains of Ruth's Chris or Morton's. Which can be good or bad depending on where you are. A really good steakhouse is a tough find. Smith & Wollensky, Ruth's Chris, Morton's, most major cities have at least one probably two of the above. The Capital Grille and the Daily Grill are also popping up in cities across the US. I am talking about a really good local steak house, a la Peter Luger. Digger's Sting is not anything close to what I am talking about. The garlic bread that Sheryl C "squee" about is nothing but a greasy loaf of bread. The filet was just okay, nothing really great. It tasted okay, but it wasn't truly grilled on fire. It was probably cooked in a a so-so broiler, not even a Salamander. The garlic mashed potatoes were inedible. The salad was just an ordinary salad. I guess for LaCrosse it is something special. For the real world, it is less than acceptable. read more

Simply the best fine dining in La Crosse. The decor reminds me of a 1950's supper club and the servers are phenomenal and very knowledgeable about the specials and the menu. They are mostly known for their delicious prime rib. I usually order one of the fish specials, last time I was there I had the swordfish that was served with a ginger teriyaki sauce. Soooo good! Ate there twice in the last three months, both times the same experience. In terms of ambiance and service the place is stellar. The cocktails were excellent. The food ... not as impressed as i used to be. My primary beef (pun intended) was with the prime rib. Problem no. 1: Ordered the 14 oz cut, which looked like a 10 oz. Problem no. 2: Ordered medium rare, received rare all the way through. Problem no. 3: This is the big one. i can forgive the other two, but I can't forgive the fact the prime rib was way too dry and lean. What happened to the fat? You can't do a good prime rib without the fat. Very disappointed. If i were grading simply on food, the place would get 2 stars (and i thought i would never ever say that about Digger's). The filet mignon is excellent (mushrooms are too salty). The Canadian Walleye is amazing, and melts in your mouth. Entrees are around $20-$30. I wouldn't advise visiting within 30 minutes of closing time, or you might feel rushed. read more

The seafood specials were not very tasty. I ordered the grilled ono (catch of the day) and it was overcooked and rubbery. My husband's blackened ono smelled very fishy (not fresh). However, others in my party of 6 ordered prime rib, walleye, and batter fried cod, which were all quite amazing. Clam chowder was ok and the cracked pepper salad dressing was really delicious. One thing I really didn't understand was the garlic butter bread. It didn't have much garlic flavor and tasted like over-baked, over-buttered bread. (Maybe that's a Wisconsin thing). Drinks were good. Great decor--reminded me of an old bar in NYC. Service was ok--staff were mostly young people--who were chatting/hanging out at the second bar in the back of the restaurant. Confused. There is no mentioned of having to call in for a reservation. A small group of us arrived at 4pm and were told they were booked. No one was in the restaurant. Their first reservation was at 5pm. They said by the time they would be able to accommodate us would be 5pm and they had no room. So, why open at 4pm if you can't accommodate anyone. My wife and I have been to Digger's Sting 5 times, most recently in January, 2011. She has had beef of various sorts each time and reports it to be good. I've had one of the fish specials each time and all have been excellent. The sea food isn't as good as at Joe's, Steak, Crab and Sea Food, but it's as good as or better than at Catch 35 (both expensive Chicago restaurants). Side items are good also. We prefer Digger's over Piggy's, and the Freight House in La Crosse and the Tradition's in Onalaska. read more
