I came in specifically looking for Ethiopian ghee which is known as niter kibe as I am going to try to make some misir wot myself. I absolutely love Ethiopian food and it's probably my favorite cuisine besides Spanish style tapas. Lady that owned the shop is super nice and sweet and helped me find everything I needed. There was also a deep maroon colored looking paste in the fridge with no label on it and I asked her what is it. She let me know it is called awaze and great as marinade. She told me it would last forever and the longer it sits, the better it tastes. I've had awaze style fish before, and it'd delicious, so I bought a container of it. I also got the niter kibe and this will also last a long time. Ethiopia also has great coffee and initially I was going to by some of the coffee advertised at the front but then learned it needed to be roasted, so I opted for already roasted ground coffee from Ethiopia. I also got some red lentils so I am all set to make misir wot at home! Owner was super nice and explained all the different kinds of fresh bread they carry and also sent me away with a trial of their injera, so that's awesome! She also explained about another bread known ambasha which can be eaten as a snack with coffee, available every day also! Such a neat find and I look forward to coming back! Baklava bar that is insanely good, and their butcher bar is amazing including Hilal meats (research Hilal meat better than how our American meat is processed). Hilal is like Kosher in that it is a religious way they render their meats. Back to the review they added an olive bar and I'm a green Olive fanatic. Try the grilled green olives if you go and you'll get your life. Produce is fresh and reasonably priced. While I have also noticed concerns with the freshness of some produce items, the most troubling part of my visit was the service at the cafeteria counter. Unfortunately, several staff members came across as unfriendly and unapproachable. Rather than feeling welcomed, I felt as though asking for assistance was an inconvenience. One of the most important aspects of customer service is making customers feel acknowledged. A simple greeting or letting customers know they'll be helped shortly can make a big difference. Instead, there were long periods of being ignored without any communication, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere. My experience left me with the impression that there may be a lack of consistency in customer service standards throughout the store. El Rancho Market has the potential to be a great neighborhood market, but improvements in customer service and employee engagement would go a long way toward creating a more positive experience for customers. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and considers additional training and oversight. I would love to see improvements because the community deserves a welcoming and customer-focused shopping experience.
