I love Penzey's Spices. I used to frequent the location they had in Tempe Marketplace, but they no longer have that storefront. So when I run low on my favorite spices I have to trek to this location. They have such an incredible selection of spices. I like their spice blends, many of which are salt-free so that you can control your sodium intake. And if you need salt, they probably have ten different varieties of that (pepper too!). I'm particularly enamored with their Krakow Nights (Polish spice blends) and their 33rd & Galena Chicken and Pork Rub. I like their spice blends fact that you can buy their spices in small jars or larger jars, and I recently discovered their little sampler packs, if you just want to experiment with new tastes. Of note is also their Arizona Dreaming salt free spice blends fact that is perfect for seasoning chicken fajita strips. I have quite an extensive array of Penzey's in my spice cabinet, to the point that it appears to be an obsession. But I can't tell you how many people I have introduced to Penzey's Spices. The Arizona Dreaming blend is my favorite one to give as hostess gifts or stocking stuffers. Now my friends all understand my addiction... and maybe even share it! read more

My sister had purchased me a small container of this chile powder and we loved it so much. It's the right heat level to bring a tear to my eye and husband is happy with it lol. I blew thru the small jar in about a week because we use ALOT of chili powder so here we are. They are conveniently located right near the intersection of Tatum and Shea. A few doors down from the PetSmart. Staff were very friendly and we found what we needed very quickly. If you like it spicy, give it a shot! read more

Love, love, love, love times a million Penzey. I am not a cooker nor a baker but I sure do love to eat. I don't really need to replenish all the boxed gifts or teacher gifts I have received over the years but I want to support their mission. Their spices and mission statement are amazing. All of the Spices are delish and many are unique. I have never been inside this location even though it is the original one in AZ. Last time I was here it was during the Covid times when they left my purchase at the curb. Before then I was at their Tempe location which does not exist anymore. So after realizing the shipping online was more than the few items I wanted I decided to go on an adventure on the other side of town, Ha! The store is, Uber Cute," especially the vintage set up kitchen scene for their varied cinnamon and cocoa sets. So darling!!!!!!!!! Can they please come and redo my kitchen please? Haha. The staff is beyond wonderful and the place just smells heavenly. So the good news is, or maybe it is the bad news I bought a pepper grinder so the bill was a tad more than I was planning on spending. I needed one anyway. I realized I had a whole jar of whole peppercorns just sitting in the cabinet waiting tor be ground and sprinkled around. I purchased Rosemary and Thyme (Okay, everyone break out in a Simon and Garfunkle song), Sandwich Sprinkle, and a few other of those small taste packets. Great idea for those of us who don't cook as often. I have many other spices from them I have received over the years. I've always been a huge fan of this Penzey's & was thrilled when I saw one here in PHX/Scottsdale. So many fabulous herbs & spices. All reasonably priced & all exceptional quality. I was sad to see it was closed for in-door shopping (thanks COVID) but thrilled I could place an order for pick up. Penzey's used to be our go-to spice shop but unfortunately we have found that some of our most recent purchases seemed to have been on the shelves for a while. They didn't have the flavor of newly packed spice. It would be nice if they printed a "packed on" date on each bottle. I say this because Pensey's isn't inexpensive. Been a fan of Penzey's for a long time. My 2 favorites that are on repeat purchasing are Arizona Dreaming and Vanilla Sugar. That Vanilla Sugar is great when you just give a little sprinkle to some berries! Arizona Dreaming is great on well everything! Had to start purchasing the bigger bottle or go more often. You could get lost in that place just looking at everything they have. So many varieties to choose from! *Covid procedures: They are not open to customers at the time. You order online, pay, and then wait for a phone call to set a time for you to pick up your items. Right before that set time they place your purchase in a chest outside the store. You just reach in and take. Not sure how they know you were the one to order and not just someone taking a peak and taking, but it has worked for us. read more

Worth the trip If you like to cook spices are very important, I've recently learned that old spices can lead to digestion upset. It prompted our visit. Because of Covid your unable to smell actual product but their info cards are very well written. FYI they are tucked into a corner so keep driving it's by the hallmark. Don't miss their taco seasoning mix. We love both original and the bold. Their pico & salsa herbs are superb The different kinds of paprika are a flavour education all by themselves so is the cinnamon collection. I bought small jars of Arizona Dreaming and mural of flavour we've liked them both. I'm planning on buying small packets of a couple of blends that are interesting & nice not making an investment in a blend you might not like. read more

Unfortunately, my opinion of this establishment had plummeted. I used to love to browse and sample the products, and they actually are great products. But now this business is extremely politically motivated. The emails are extremely hate filed tyrants to sell their products based on political views. This is not very professional. I usually order online rather than taking a 30 minute drive across the Valley. I was so excited when we pulled up to the store. Walking into the store took it up ten notches!!! The smells came from every direction. I sniffed just about all the spices. I love that they have samples available for each option. There was an amazing sale I couldn't pass up. Kind boxes with 3 seasonings and a Kind pin were 2/$20.20 ($23.70 savings). Another promotion was spend $5 and get 2 free 1/4 Oz seasonings (up to $12 savings). All that's pictured here was $37.21! Not pictured is a 3rd Kind pin that given to all customers. If you don't sign up for their emails, consider it. Even if you don't order, they're pretty good to read. From time to time I need spices the grocery store doesn't carry. In fact, I recently bought some basics from Penzeys. I do enjoy their spices but they are not my favorite place a close second. I find they tend to be a little more expensive than their competition, which for some spices is ok and others you know it's just not worth it. They do have some unique offerings and certain ones are better than the competition. I find Penzey's does really well on the exotic single spices, but I'm not their biggest fan on the blends. For example, their air-dried shallots are one of my favorites along with their tarragon. If you sign up for their newsletter, they often run deals or freebies for special occasions, so that's always a plus. I find getting to the Penzey's store puts my out of my way, so sometimes I end up missing some of the better deals unfortunately. read more

Penzey's has closed all their other locations and left this one open because of its location in an area with lots of money. While their spices are very good, I will no longer support them because of this. If I cannot try the spices I will not buy them. They claim you can buy them online, but unless you have a large order, you pay for shipping, which is often a lot more than the tax, which, is still required because they have a store in the state. Bill Penzey has become involved in politics now and seems to be more interested in it than keeping his customers. I am now looking for another spice purveyor much closer to the general Phoenix area. read more

I try to support my local businesses, especially during COVID. I've been a Penzey's customer for many years, so while out on errands I stopped to refresh my supplies. I learned no customers are allowed in the store (even though I can go to restaurants, grocery stores, get my hair cut, etc.) - you have to pick up your order outside. So I called from my car in the parking lot to see if they could fill my order (which was very simple and would take literally 2 minutes). They told me I had to go home and order online. You would think that a company that is so focused on love and kindness they would have nicer employees. I've been getting my spices at Penzeys for over 5 years because of the quality but I'm going to go ahead and look elsewhere. The people at the Tempe marketplace location were so much friendlier, but they closed that location. It's not like I'm in here all the time. But every time I have to do business with this location I walk away feeling disheartened by the quality of service. Is it that stressful selling spice that you have to be that rude to people, and for no reason? Since spices are important to cooking, and I love cooking for my family, I don't want to look into my spice drawer everyday and be reminded how obviously miserable the employees are that sell the stuff. Penzey's has been my go-to Shop for spices for 15 years. Based in Milwaukee, Penzey's has nearly every spice (plus 27 more) you could think of. I always feel comfortable shopping at Penzey's. They play comforting music, the cashiers are knowledgeable and are qualified to offer suggestions. The prices at Penzey's are more than a grocery store but the freshness is way better. They allow the customers to open a jar and really smell the ingredients, since they keep sample jars of each spice. Stop by Penzey's and give them your business. read more

They have their own special mixes that you can't get anywhere else & my family is a huge fan of their Mural of Flavor especially. I've been buying spices here for several years because the flavor really can't be beat. However, two trips to this store this week (which is 37 miles away from my home) and the older gentleman working as cashier has one the most negative demeanors I've seen in retail. He is completely unhelpful. Not interested in making this experience exciting whatsoever. Felt like he was just keeping guard rather than connecting with customers. Today he had the audacity to tell me I've "never" bought a particular spice in a bag when in fact I have the bag at home. He could have kindly explained the change in packaging instead.
